Senator Ed Markey has delivered a major warning to Big Tech and the rapidly expanding data center industry after securing the Democratic nomination for a third full Senate term. In his September 1, 2026 victory speech, the Massachusetts senator directly targeted data centers, big tech, and corporate pollution, calling for stronger action to protect communities from the environmental and economic costs of massive AI infrastructure expansion. Markey accused corporate interests of putting profits ahead of people and linked data center growth to rising concerns over pollution, energy costs, grid reliability, noise, and water consumption. His remarks signal a renewed push for his broader AI Accountability Agenda and could intensify the political fight over the future of America’s AI infrastructure.

00:00We need to tax the rich, block the bombs, and stop data centers from polluting our communities.
00:11We must fight for the laws to put people ahead of profit.
00:16Why should we be hopeful in this moment when there is so much fear and hate?
00:21Why am I so optimistic?
00:24Because there are more of us than there are of them.
00:26Because when we stand together with better ideas and stronger ideals, they do not stand a chance because the many
00:38will always beat the money.
00:41And we know, we know, we know that our work is more than a campaign, more than even just this
00:51moment in which we are all being called to act.
00:53Our progressive movement knows how to fight.
00:57We cannot surrender.
00:58Tomorrow and for the next eight weeks in every corner of the Commonwealth and across the country, we have to
01:04hit the streets.
01:05Good evening, everyone. Thank you for being here tonight.
01:11Because tonight is a testament to the power of the progressive movement of our nation.
01:23It is a progressive movement fueled by young people demanding more from their leaders.
01:30And it's your voices that are the ones we need to hear right now.
01:35Your leadership will show us the way.
01:38Young people are leading us to a better future.
01:42And I have been honored to have the endorsements of Senator Bernie Sanders and Senator Elizabeth Warren and Congresswoman Ayanna
01:53Pressley and Attorney General Andrea Campbell and Mayor Michelle Wu.
01:59And I thank them. I thank them for their support.
02:04Thank you to Tyler Hack and the Christopher Street Project.
02:12I am so proud of your historic work.
02:15And to my good friend, State Senator Lydia Edwards.
02:21What a great leader. What a great, great leader.
02:24I spoke with Congressman Moulton just a few months ago.
02:28And I offered him my appreciation for a hard fought campaign and for his dedication to our great Commonwealth.
02:36And I told him that I look forward to talking with him about how to build the better future for
02:43everyone that we are both committed to.
02:46And to my beautiful and brilliant wife, my best friend, Susan Blumenthal.
03:04I could not have done this without you.
03:08Thank you for a lifetime of love and inspiration every day with you.
03:15And to my family who is here, you have been with me since my first race.
03:25And your support has made all of this possible.
03:30A few people deserve a special shout out tonight because we would not be here without them.
03:36To our campaign's fearless leader, Dorchester's finest, Cam Chabonier.
04:00From the first day I met him, he had an unshakable vision for this campaign.
04:07He studied the numbers, he crafted the message, he invested in the grassroots.
04:12Cam has been our beating heart, pumping energy and excitement and faith into every corner of our effort every single
04:20day.
04:20Thank you for everything, Cam.
04:24But we're not done yet.
04:32And to political power host Stacey Monaghan.
04:53As an advisor, as an organizer, she has been irreplaceable.
04:57As a conscience and a confidant, she has been our North Star.
05:03And I cannot thank her enough for everything that she does every single day.
05:10To my chief of staff, Giselle Barry.
05:20You steer, you steer this ship every single day.
05:24I thank you for your words, for your counsel, for your friendship, for your leadership, for your vision.
05:32And to the man who has led my state office for nearly a decade.
05:50He has been everywhere.
05:53He has been everywhere.
05:55He knows everyone.
05:56He responds to everything.
05:59With the compassion and the urgency and the care that every family in Massachusetts deserves.
06:05The great Jim Cantwell.
06:06Thank you Jim.
06:13And I know this is a room that will join me in remembering the great John Walsh.
06:19He is tonight, he is here tonight with us in spirit and has been every day of this campaign.
06:25He set an amazing foundation for us in 2020.
06:30His legacy lives on in all of us who believe that organizing can change the world.
06:37We thank you John for sharing yourself with us.
06:41And we will never forget you.
06:46And to a campaign team without equal.
06:50Michael, Sky, Farouk, TJ, Grace, Jonathan, all of the staff, the fellows, the volunteers, the supporters.
07:02It's your creativity, your passion that will inspire activists and campaigns all across this country this year.
07:10To create the progressive change this country is demanding.
07:17Farouk.
07:20My deepest thanks to everyone.
07:23And don't stay out too late tonight.
07:25Our work has only just begun.
07:29I got an important education growing up in Malden at my family's kitchen table.
07:35First from the calculus my mother tried to teach me at the table with little success.
07:41And then, after we were done, I watched her figure out how she could pay all the bills at that
07:48same table.
07:49It's the same education that countless kids and families are getting every day at their kitchen table.
07:55All across the commonwealth and all across our country.
07:59An early education in arithmetic and economics.
08:03My parents worked hard and sacrificed for me and for my brothers so that we could maximize our God-given
08:10abilities.
08:11And I see the sacrifices that families are making today to keep the lights on, to put food on the
08:16table,
08:16to get the doctor and afford it when the Tylenol just isn't enough.
08:23Just visit the home of a paraprofessional educator.
08:26She knows affordable daycare is nearly impossible to secure because childcare in Massachusetts has surpassed $26,000 a year.
08:36And a paraprofessional only makes $36,000 a year.
08:40The arithmetic and the economics just don't work for her and for hundreds of thousands of others in the commonwealth.
08:49And as I travel around the state, you tell me you want something so basic, so fundamental for your families,
08:57you shouldn't even have to say it.
08:59You want a life you can afford today and a future you can believe in tomorrow.
09:05This election, that better future is on the ballot.
09:15A future with universal childcare and pre-K.
09:20A future with affordable housing and fair free transit.
09:25A future with free public college and gun-free schools.
09:31A future where Roe vs. Wade is the law of the land.
09:41A future with organized labor and a middle class built by that organized labor.
09:52A future with clean air and clean water, a livable future for everyone.
09:58A future with no co-pays, no surprise bills, no premiums, no deductibles.
10:04A future with Medicare for all.
10:14It is a future that we can realize through a bold, transformational, progressive agenda that inspires hope, lowers costs, wrests
10:25the control from the oligarchy.
10:27We need to take back this future because it is a future that belongs to all of us.
10:33It is a future that every child on every porch, whether in Malden or Mashpee, should have a shot at.
10:41Not just the mega wealthy, not just the connected few, not just the bomb makers, the insurance companies, the corporate
10:48polluters or the billionaire bosses.
10:50My father was a truck driver.
10:53As a boy, I grew up dreaming my dreams on a porch in Malden where I was born and raised
11:01and still live.
11:02And now I am a United States Senator.
11:10I was able to realize my American dream.
11:15And right now, Donald Trump is attacking the futures, the dreams of every boy and every girl on every porch
11:25all across this country.
11:27Cutting education, cutting health care, cutting protections against discrimination.
11:33And that is what ticks me off.
11:35Because I was one of those boys.
11:38Donald Trump brings out the Malden in me every single day.
11:49Because I see him slashing the programs that are going to help those boys and girls on their porches, dreaming
11:55their dreams of a better future.
11:57That's what this race is all about.
12:00It's their American dream, their future, which we are fighting for.
12:05I believe in that future.
12:06And I know you do too.
12:08That's why we're all here tonight.
12:11To fight for that future.
12:14For every boy and girl.
12:16All across our country.
12:18And that fight is in our hands.
12:20Here in Massachusetts.
12:21In Maine.
12:22In Michigan.
12:23And all across the United States.
12:30The fight for Medicare for All.
12:32The fight for a Green New Deal.
12:34For taxing billionaires.
12:38And fighting for a living wage.
12:41These are our floor, not our ceiling.
12:48Generational change isn't about compromising.
12:52To do the small things better.
12:54It's about fighting to do the big things best.
12:58This is the United States of America.
12:59And we are Massachusetts.
13:01That is who we are.
13:05We strive for the best.
13:09Massachusetts values the public good.
13:12And investing in people.
13:13Leading the nation in healthcare coverage.
13:15And public education.
13:17We fought for it.
13:18And we won.
13:19We value protecting the environment.
13:21Which is why we have some of the most beautiful beaches and forests and waterways in the world.
13:26We fought for it.
13:26And we won.
13:27We value science and innovation.
13:29Serving as a beacon for engineering and advanced manufacturing.
13:33And technological breakthroughs.
13:35We fought for that mantle of leadership.
13:37And we won.
13:38And above all else.
13:40Massachusetts values the promise of democracy.
13:43Born here 250 years ago.
13:46We have led the fight to combat Trump and MAGA extremism.
13:50And we are not backing down in Massachusetts.
13:53Not now.
13:54Not ever.
14:07So to Donald Trump and his enablers.
14:11If you are listening.
14:12Massachusetts has something to say tonight.
14:17We will not sit by while you try to destroy this democracy.
14:22We will not sit by as you terrorize.
14:25And detain.
14:27And deport our immigrant neighbors.
14:29We need ICE out of our communities.
14:31And we need to abolish ICE now.
14:42We will not sit by as you reward the mega wealthy.
14:46While SNAP and Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act get slashed.
14:51We will not sit by as you demonize our LGBT plus and trans communities.
14:56We must pass my trans bill of rights.
15:06Trans rights are human rights.
15:14We will not sit by as you build more bombs.
15:17Drill for more oil.
15:18Sell off our public lands.
15:20We need to end the war in Iran.
15:22And stop the bombing in Gaza.
15:33We need to slash the Pentagon budget.
15:37And we need to impeach Donald Trump now.
15:46And we will not sit by while you take away voting rights from black and brown Americans.
15:51Suppress the vote.
15:53And try to steal an election.
15:56Hear me clearly when I say we will band together here in Massachusetts.
16:02And across the country by the millions.
16:05We will meet you in the courts.
16:08We will meet you in the streets.
16:10And in November we will meet you at the ballot box Donald Trump.
16:15And now.
16:16And MAGA Republicans.
16:22As Dr. King once asked and answered about the fight for rights and dignity.
16:29How long?
16:30Not long.
16:31Because no lie can live forever.
16:34How long?
16:36Not long.
16:37Not long.
16:38Because you shall reap what you sow.
16:41America has caught on Donald Trump.
16:44And we're not going to take it anymore.
16:55No more will we be intimidated by your mass thugs or hateful threats.
17:00No more will we tolerate your all-you-can-eat corruption buffet.
17:04No more will we choose between a fair wage and a fair tax code.
17:10We will have both.
17:12No more.
17:13No more will we allow corporate greed and poverty to live side by side and allow the criminal enterprises
17:20of big oil and big tech and big ag and big banks to mortgage our family's future, make children sick,
17:27and devalue life.
17:29We need to tax the rich, block the bombs, and stop data centers from polluting our communities.
17:42We must fight for the laws that put people ahead of profit.
17:46Why should we be hopeful in this moment when there is so much fear and hate?
17:52Why am I so optimistic?
17:54Because there are more of us than there are of them.
17:58Because when we stand together with better ideas and stronger ideals, they do not stand a chance.
18:06Because the many will always beat the money.
18:11And we know, we know, we know that our work is more than a campaign.
18:19More than even just this moment in which we are all being called to act.
18:24Our progressive movement knows how to fight.
18:27We cannot surrender.
18:29Tomorrow and for the next eight weeks in every corner of the Commonwealth and across the country, we have to
18:34hit the streets.
18:35We need to send Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll back to the State House.
18:41And keep Attorney General Andrea Campbell suing the Trump administration.
18:46We need to take back the House of Representatives and the Senate and end this era of MAGA corruption in
18:53Congress.
18:59Ladies and gentlemen, there is a big blue wave coming to drown out all those red MAGA hats.
19:07And I'm going to get to work for Peggy Flanagan in Minnesota, Troy Jackson in Maine, Roy Cooper in North
19:14Carolina,
19:15Sherrod Brown in Ohio, Mary Peltola in Alaska, James Tallarico in Texas, Josh Turek in Iowa, and Abdul El-Sayed
19:29in Michigan.
19:37And we're going to get them elected and we're going to get them casting votes on the floor of the
19:43United States Senate.
19:47Marky! Marky! Marky! Marky! Marky! Marky! Marky! Marky! Marky! Marky! Marky! Marky! Marky! Marky!
19:54And if Trump tries to steal the election this year, and he will, we're going to need to turn civic
20:01action into civil disobedience.
20:06Marshall your friends and neighbors. Take to the streets. Sit in. Protest. Withhold your labor.
20:13Do not agonize. Organize!
20:16We need to build more than just a Democratic majority in Congress. We need to cement a progressive Democratic majority,
20:25one that will use its political capital to take on the bosses, the billionaires, and the wannabe kings.
20:32And after we win, we will remove Donald Trump from the White House and restore and rebuild and expand our
20:40vision for a democracy and an economy that works for every single person.
20:46Massachusetts needs a senator who stands up and fights back. A senator who never forgets who they are fighting for.
20:55That has been the mission of my life, and it always will be.
21:00So I pledge to you, I pledge tonight, to work with you and for you, to never give up. To
21:07be your voice in Washington.
21:08To defend the values of justice and equality and freedom that we hold here.
21:13The values that make Massachusetts the greatest state in this country that we call home.
21:18And together, we will create a healthier, a fairer, a more prosperous and peaceful and hope-filled future for everyone.
21:27Thank you, Massachusetts. And God bless the United States of America.
21:33Thank you all so much. Thank you.
