00:00For nearly 30 years, the drive-by killing of Tupac Shakur remained one of America's most notorious cold cases.
00:06Now, a jury has convicted a former gang leader of organizing the killing of the hip-hop legend.
00:11Here's how we got here.
00:12The defendant, Dwayne Davis, also known as Keefy D, said he was out for revenge after his nephew was beat
00:18up by Tupac and members of his entourage as part of a gang rivalry with two Los Angeles-based gangs.
00:24Afterwards, Mr. Davis organized a group of guys, got a gun, and handed the gun to the guy in the
00:30back of the car that he was riding in, and they go around looking for Tupac in Las Vegas, and
00:34they find him, and someone in the back opens fire and kills him.
00:37Under Nevada law, he doesn't need to be the trigger man to be charged with murder, as long as he
00:42played a substantial enough role in the killing.
00:44So the reason he was arrested almost 30 years after the killing was because he started making public statements in
00:50media interviews and in a 2019 book that he published describing his role in Tupac's murder.
00:56And the key evidence was Mr. Davis' own words.
00:59Prosecutors played hours of recordings of his media interviews and these secretly taped meetings with investigators, part of a task
01:07force that was looking into other crimes.
01:08And so it seems that jurors believed Mr. Davis in the end when he said that he was involved in
01:15the killing of Tupac.
01:16At his sentencing on October 13th, he's going to be facing a possible maximum sentence of life without parole because
01:23he was convicted of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon.
01:26And I would like to appeal this matter.
01:27Of course.
01:28After the verdict was read in court, Mr. Davis addressed the judge directly and said he plans to appeal this
01:33matter.
01:34It's not clear what exactly the basis of his appeal would be, but generally speaking in cases like this,
01:41you would need to argue that the judge made some sort of error or errors in the run-up to
01:45the trial that deprived him of his right to a fair trial.
