00:00She meant, she meant love. She really did. She loved everyone.
00:10That was Jane Fonda getting emotional while remembering her late friend and 9 to 5 co-star Dolly Parton after
00:16her sudden death at 80.
00:17Fonda also gushed over Dolly Parton's relationship with her fans, telling Democracy Now, quote,
00:22She never played down. She was always pulled together. She was always who she was out of respect for her
00:28fans.
00:28She knew from the get-go who she was.
00:31Fonda posted a tribute to Dolly after her death on Instagram sharing a sweet throwback snap of the two filming
00:369 to 5.
00:37Fonda wrote in the caption that she was devastated by Dolly's death, adding,
00:41Dolly will always be with us because she was so present, so powerful, so generous, and playful
00:46that she is woven into all of our lives and hearts forever.
00:50We have our memories of her, her songs, Dollywood, 9 to 5, the millions of books she got into the
00:56hands of children,
00:56all the iconic images that bring her to us. And they are all blessings. Let's be grateful for all that
01:03she has left us.
01:04Fonda told Democracy Now what it was like hearing Dolly Parton perform 9 to 5 for the first time on
01:09the set of the film.
01:10She called me and Lily over during the lunch break.
01:14She said, come here. You know, she had nails like this.
01:18She'd come in a corner and she said, I think I've written a song.
01:22And she starts singing 9 to 5 using her nails as percussion instruments.
01:29And I just, Lily and I looked at each other. We both had the biggest goosebumps we'd ever had.
01:359 to 5 ended up topping the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1981.
01:40It was Dolly Parton's only solo single that ever went to number one on the pop charts.
01:44The three women actually reunited back in 2006 to perform the song together to mark 9 to 5's 25th anniversary.
01:52Jane, Fonda, and Lily Tomlin later went on to co-star in the Netflix comedy Grace and Frankie.
01:57Dolly Parton actually made a cameo in the final episode of the series as an angel in heaven.
02:01Fonda referenced this in her Instagram tribute, telling Parton's vans to, quote,
02:06dress up and celebrate her spirit.
02:08But first, watch the final episode of Grace and Frankie, where she's an angel,
02:12the head honcho working class angel in heaven.
02:15Rest in peace, beautiful woman.
02:17We love you.
02:18We love you.
