00:00When we think of deserts, we often imagine endless sand and vast silent landscapes, but
00:06some deserts are not just places that are difficult to live in.
00:12Others are like traps, natural places where extreme heat can destroy the body in just
00:17a few hours, while the cold can kill in just a few minutes.
00:22No water, no shelter, and almost no room for mistakes.
00:26Throughout history, many explorers, travelers, and even entire populations have underestimated
00:33the dangers of these territories, and many of them never returned.
00:36In this video, we will discuss the 10 most dangerous deserts in the world.
00:42These are places where nature surpasses any human preparation, where survival depends not
00:48only on experience, but also on the ability to make fewer mistakes than the desert itself.
00:53But before we continue, if you're new to our channel, make sure to subscribe so you'll
01:00always be updated with videos like this.
01:05Number 10.
01:07Antarctic Desert.
01:08In the southernmost part of the world, you can find the Antarctic Desert, the largest desert
01:13in the world, and one of the most dangerous environments known to man.
01:18Antarctic Desert.
01:19Although it is covered in ice, it has all the characteristics of a desert.
01:23There is almost no rainfall, and the air is extremely dry, and there is an almost complete
01:29lack of natural resources that humans can use.
01:33The temperature here can make even a simple mistake deadly.
01:38Inside the continent, temperatures usually drop below negative 60 degrees Celsius, and this
01:44is also where the lowest temperature ever recorded in the world was measured.
01:49In addition, there are strong katabatic winds that can exceed 300 kilometers per hour.
01:58These make the cold feel even worse, and can cause frostbite in just a few minutes.
02:05Here, self-rescue isn't something you can take lightly.
02:09You can't rely on improvisation.
02:11Only scientific expeditions that are carefully planned can operate in this kind of environment,
02:17where hypothermia, disorientation, and extreme isolation make the Antarctic Desert a place
02:25where nature reigns supreme.
02:28Number 9.
02:28Great Victoria Desert.
02:30The Great Victoria Desert covers a vast area of southern Australia, and it is one of the
02:35most isolated places in the entire country.
02:40It is not known for its magnificent sands or remarkable scenery, but for something much
02:45more dangerous, its vast emptiness.
02:49In many parts of it, there are no roads, no settlements, and no sources of water for hundreds
02:55of miles.
02:58Temperatures easily exceed 45 degrees Celsius, and the intense heat is accompanied by sparse
03:04vegetation that offers almost no shade.
03:08Dehydration quickly worsens, and it becomes difficult to find your way in a monotonous environment,
03:14where almost everything looks the same as far as the eye can see.
03:18On top of that, there are some of the most dangerous animals in Australia, venomous snakes, spiders, and scorpions.
03:26In this desert, a vehicle breakdown, bite, or a wrong decision could mean waiting for days without any help coming.
03:36Here, danger doesn't come suddenly.
03:39It gradually builds up until it reaches the point where there's nothing you can do to get back.
03:45The Kalahari Desert stretches across Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa.
03:51Unlike other deserts, it is not completely dry, but its seemingly milder conditions are what make it such a
03:59deceptively dangerous environment.
04:02Rainfall here is irregular and depends on the season, and for much of the year, surface water completely disappears.
04:12Temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius, and the combination of intense heat and low humidity
04:18quickly accelerates dehydration before the body even notices it.
04:24Plants are few and far between, so shade is limited, and finding direction becomes difficult in the vast flat and
04:31sandy areas.
04:34Historically, survival here has depended on the knowledge of the locals.
04:38For people without enough knowledge of the area, the Kalahari can be deadly.
04:44Animals here include predators, such as lions, as well as venomous reptiles.
04:51In this desert, getting lost or mismanaging your water supply is enough to keep you from getting out safely.
04:58Here, nature gives no warning!
05:01Number 7. Karakum Desert
05:04The Karakum Desert covers a large part of Turkmenistan, and is one of the harshest deserts in Central Asia.
05:12Its name literally means black sand, and that's no coincidence.
05:16In the summer, the ground reaches extremely high temperatures, and the intense heat continues even at night,
05:22making it very difficult to rest for long periods.
05:26Outside of a few settlements, there are almost no sources of water.
05:29Sand storms can easily cause almost zero visibility and disorientation,
05:35especially in the flat and repetitive landscape of the desert.
05:39But the Karakum has another danger that is a result of human activity.
05:42This is the Darwaza gas crater, a fire that has been burning continuously for decades,
05:48releasing poisonous gases and making an already dangerous environment even more hazardous.
05:52Here, it's not just the climate that's a threat.
05:56The combination of extreme heat, utter isolation, and dangers brought by industrial activity
06:01makes the Karakum Desert a place where human error and the forces of nature come together.
06:07Number 6. Sonoran Desert
06:10The Sonoran Desert stretches from northern Mexico to the southwestern part of the United States.
06:16Unlike other deserts, many roads run through it, and some areas are close to communities,
06:23so it can give a false sense of security.
06:27However, it is one of the most dangerous deserts in North America.
06:32During the summer months, temperatures can easily exceed 45 degrees Celsius,
06:37and the heat that accumulates on the ground can cause heat stroke even without intense physical activity.
06:44Dehydration also worsens quickly as many parts of the desert have little to no shade or accessible water sources.
06:51On top of that, there are dangerous animals.
06:53These include rattlesnakes, scorpions, and venomous spiders that can cause severe reactions in the body.
07:01Every year, there are hikers and immigrants who lose their lives
07:05because they underestimate the dangers of this environment.
07:08The Sonoran Desert doesn't simply punish mere mistakes.
07:12What it truly punishes is overconfidence.
07:16Number 5. Rubal Kali Desert
07:20The Rubal Kali Desert, also known as the Empty Quarter,
07:24is one of the largest continuous sand deserts in the world.
07:28It stretches across Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
07:34In most parts of this region, there are no permanent settlements.
07:39This is a desert where emptiness itself dominates the entire landscape.
07:44Temperatures can easily exceed 50 degrees Celsius.
07:48While some sand dunes reach over 250 meters high, making it very difficult to determine the right direction,
07:56there is almost no water, and the sands are constantly shifting.
08:01Because of this, even modern navigation systems may have difficulty functioning without clear landmarks.
08:08In the 20th century, several expeditions failed in their attempts to cross this desert.
08:14There are also very few animals here.
08:18And there are almost no useful plants.
08:21The Rubal Kali doesn't need strong storms or visible dangers to be deadly.
08:27It's enough to run out of water in a place where there's nothing around for hundreds of kilometers.
08:34Number 4. Atacama Desert
08:36The Atacama Desert in northern Chile is one of the driest places in the world.
08:40In its most extreme hyperarid parts, there are places where almost no rainfall has been recorded.
08:46And there are some areas where decades have passed without any significant rainfall.
08:51The annual average rainfall in some areas is less than a few millimeters.
08:55This extreme dryness is caused by its location between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Coast.
09:02These block the moisture, and create what is called a rain shadow, which keeps the region almost completely dry.
09:10The conditions here are so extreme that the Atacama is used as an Earth analog to study the possibility of
09:17life on Mars.
09:19Intense UV radiation, extremely salty soil, and temperatures that can change drastically from day to night are some of the
09:27challenges here.
09:28Although, unlike other deserts where extreme heat or strong storms are the main dangers,
09:34the complete dryness and lack of drinkable water in the Atacama are enough to make even the smallest lapse in
09:41preparation extremely dangerous.
09:44For anyone coming here without enough water and equipment, a simple mistake can be deadly.
09:52Number 3. Gobi Desert
09:54The Gobi Desert, which stretches across southern Mongolia and northern China, is a cold desert with a vast expanse.
10:02It covers more than 1.3 million square kilometers and is one of the harshest environments in the world.
10:08The climate here is known for its extreme temperature changes.
10:14Temperatures can reach up to 45 degrees Celsius during the summer, while in winter, they can drop below negative 40
10:21degrees Celsius.
10:24Because of this, the human body is constantly tested every hour of the day.
10:29Unlike other deserts, a large part of the Gobi is not made up of fine sand.
10:34Most of it is rocky terrain, vast steppes, and gravel, with some isolated areas of sand dunes.
10:41Because of this, finding your way becomes even harder, especially when the wind is strong.
10:48Dust storms and sand storms are common, and they can last for several days.
10:53This reduces visibility, irritates the respiratory passages, and makes crossing even harder without the proper equipment.
11:02Despite these harsh conditions, the desert is still home to animals that are highly adapted to this environment.
11:09These include the Bactrian camel and endangered species like the rare Gobi bear, which survive even though their populations are
11:17very small.
11:19The lack of water, extreme temperatures, and harsh terrain make the Gobi a place where simply surviving is already a
11:27great achievement.
11:29And here, a single mistake can be fatal.
11:34Number 2. Danakil Desert
11:37The Danakil Desert in the Afar region of northeastern Ethiopia is considered one of the harshest and most dangerous places
11:45in the world.
11:46This vast territory is located in some areas more than 100 meters below sea level.
11:52It also records extremely high average temperatures that often exceed 50 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest places
12:00on the planet.
12:01But it's not just the heat that makes Danakil unique.
12:04It also has intense geological activity, including active volcanoes.
12:11Hot springs, extremely acidic lakes, and hypersaline environments that seem otherworldly.
12:17Around Dalal, you'll find water that's highly corrosive and poisonous gases in the air.
12:24Breathing these in without proper protection can be dangerous even for a very short period of time.
12:30Aside from the extreme weather conditions, the Danakil is located in a remote and isolated area, far from modern infrastructure.
12:39Because of this, any problem that occurs becomes much harder to solve.
12:45The traditional salt caravans and the few communities continue to live in an environment where extreme heat combines,
12:52toxicity, and a lack of basic resources.
12:57Here, going without proper preparation is almost impossible to do safely.
13:02Number 1. Sahara Desert
13:04The Sahara Desert covers a large part of North Africa, and it is the largest hot desert in the world.
13:12It spans over 9 million square kilometers covering many countries such as Algeria, Libya, Niger, Sudan, Chad, and others.
13:22The climate here is unforgiving.
13:25In the summer, many areas experience temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius every day,
13:31and in some remote parts in the middle of the desert, it can even go beyond 50 degrees Celsius.
13:39There's almost no rain here. Some areas receive less than 35 millimeters of rain each year.
13:46But it's not just the heat that's dangerous. The Sahara is known for its powerful sandstorms,
13:53caused by winds like the Simum. In just a few minutes, these winds can lift huge amounts of sand and
14:01dust,
14:02almost completely wiping out visibility and making it very difficult to continue any journey.
14:09In addition, the night brings a dramatic change.
14:15Because there are few or almost no clouds and humidity to retain heat, the temperature can drop below 0 degrees
14:23Celsius.
14:25Because of this, the body is put at risk and you can get hypothermia even when you least expect it.
14:31The combination of extreme dryness, scorching heat, and sudden sandstorms, and extremely cold nights,
14:39is the reason why the Sahara is considered one of the most dangerous deserts on the planet for anyone who
14:45ventures into it without proper preparation.
14:49There isn't just one type of dangerous deserts. Some deserts harm the body because of extreme heat,
14:55others because of cold, excessive dryness or complete isolation. In each case, the dangers are different,
15:02but often the result is the same when the environment is underestimated. These landscapes are not just simple places for
15:10adventure.
15:13These are extreme environments where everything is at the limit, there is no room for mistakes,
15:19improvisation won't work, and you definitely can't let a mistake last for long.
