‘Edjop’ film sparks campus conversation in Cebu

The story of slain student activist Edgar “Edjop” Jopson reached Cebu’s youth as the filmmakers and cast of “Edjop” held a campus conversation with students and faculty of Southwestern University PHINMA Cebu.

Director and co-writer Katski Flores, Elijah Canlas, who portrays Jopson, and Frankie “Kakie” Pangilinan, who plays his wife Joy, joined the forum, which tackled Jopson’s life, beliefs and struggles.

Flores said the team chose campus conversations to engage young Filipinos directly and give them a space to ask questions.

Canlas said he was initially offered the role of young Jopson but volunteered for the lead role. Already familiar with Jopson’s story, he said portraying the activist challenged him to prove he was worthy of the role. Pangilinan said the film carries a personal connection, as her father, former Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, gave her a book about Jopson when she was 16. “Edjop” is set for nationwide theatrical release on Sept. 16.

00:00that we can be aligned with all of our films,
00:04especially in the marketing and promotions of the film.
00:09Let's just say, the brand of it.
00:12Every movie is still a product,
00:14and we're trying to sell the idea of this movie,
00:18which is not a conventional film,
00:20but we're doing a national rollout, right?
00:23We're independent, but we're doing a national rollout,
00:25and we want to have as many people as possible watching.
00:30But we couldn't rely on conventional marketing
00:35because we're working with a very limited budget.
00:42In fact, I'm also the one who ideated the campaign,
00:45the marketing campaign.
00:46I'm being helped by my partners in executing it.
00:49So it's really DIY, which is very edge-of-coded.
00:52So nung naisip namin, okay, ano ba ang best way
00:56na maipromote natin ito within our means,
01:01within our resources, but it's also just as creative
01:03and just as impactful.
01:07And ako kasi importante sa akin,
01:10kung kaya, as much as possible.
01:11Yung medyo original, something that has not been done.
01:15And we didn't have to look far.
01:17I didn't have to look far for inspiration.
01:36Because it would give us an opportunity
01:39to talk about the film in the way that we want.
01:42beyond the showbiz, beyond the entertainment factor of it.
01:47Really talk directly, have real talks,
01:49with our most important audiences,
01:52which is the students.
01:53Na, kanina, sabi nga, I was telling si Sir Ron,
01:56na, we couldn't have asked for,
01:58I couldn't have asked for a better kick-off
02:01than the one that we just had.
02:02I don't know kung meron sa inyong naka-catch
02:05nung naging 2, 2,5-hour session namin sa taas
02:08with the students of Southway.
02:11Kasi, napaka-energized ng conversation,
02:16napaka-engaged ng mga studyante,
02:19and that's the best outcome.
02:21Kasi, napaka-energized ng dung nga.
02:25Kasi, napaka-energized ng mga studiante,
02:26kasi, napaka-energized ng dung nga.
