00:00Will AUKU finally be abolished?
00:03The Prime Minister recently announced that the Universities and University Colleges Act, better known as AUKU, will be abolished.
00:12This is not, however, the first such announcement as there have been previous attempts to repeal AUKU.
00:19AUKU was enacted in 1971 when student activism was at its height in Malaysian universities.
00:27When it was first enacted, it was supposed to govern how public universities and colleges were set up and run.
00:34But it became known for limiting students' political activities, speech and activism, while giving university authorities the power to punish
00:43or ban student groups.
00:44Students and civil society groups have long called for its abolition.
00:49Pakatan Harapan campaigned on a promise to abolish AUKU when it won the 2018 general election.
00:56Then, Education Minister, Dr Mazli Malik, even formed a committee to repeal AUKU and develop a new law to replace
01:03it, the Higher Education Act.
01:06But the Pakatan Government fell after the Sheraton move and subsequent administrations put abolition of AUKU on the back burner.
01:15On Saturday, Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Zamri Abdul Kadeh said,
01:21Seven sections under AUKU relating to students, including aspects concerning their freedom, would be given parity in the process of
01:29repealing the Act.
01:30But he also said, AUKU needs to be viewed comprehensively as it is the parent act that forms the basis
01:37for the establishment of universities.
01:40All public universities except University of Melayah depend on AUKU.
01:45So, will this finally be the end of AUKU?
01:48What will be the new law replacing it?
01:51We will have to wait and see.
