Wow, the world has really become a convenient place. We can turn on lights, listen to music... That's true. And our comfortable lives today are all thanks to various inventions through out history. Exactly! So today,I want to talk about some great episodes of the man they call the "King of Inventions, "Edison! Oh,Thomas Edison! That sounds wonderful. Famous for saying,"1% inspirationand 99% perspiration." That's right! When you think of Edison, his greatest achievement has to be the phonograph! He made it possibleto record and play backsound for the very first time in the world. Indeed, the origin of the music industry. And do you know what the very first words Edison recorded on that phonograph were? Hmm, what was it? Something like,"A historic step"? "Ah, ah,testing, testing, one, two, three..." It was a mic test?! Normally you'd leave some cool famous quote! They say it was"Mary Had a Little Lamb"! Oh, right. (laughs) And another thing,Edison is also famous for making the incandescent light bulbpractical. Yes, yes. He tried thousands of materials to find the perfect filament, didn't he? Yes! He tried bamboo, metal, and all sortsof things. And finally, he discovered the ultimate filament that burned the longest! Wow,bamboo from Kyoto, Japan, right?! No, it was"the power cord from the kotatsu atmy parents' house." Don't chop up your parents' kotatsu! You'll start a fire! It was bamboo from Yawata, Kyoto! Oh, right. (laughs) But you know,Edison was always a bit peculiar, even as a kid. Like trying to hatch chicks by sitting one ggs himself. That's a famous story. He was just overly curious, wasn't he? Yeah. And when he grew up,he said "Sleep is a waste of time" andreportedly only slept 3 hours a day. Wow, what a superman. No wonder he made so many inventions. And do you know what he did with the remaining 21 hours he was awake? Well, experiments and research, of course? Apparently, he was debating whether to go back to sleep. So he was trying to sleep anyway! The 3-hour sleep was pointless! Well, but you see,his fearlessness of failure is amazing. When he failed thousands of times in his lightbulb experiments,a reporter asked him,"Don't you get sick of failing so much?" That's what they asked. Oh, Edison's reply to that is an incredibly famous quote, isn't it?! Yes! Edison answered like this: "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work!" So cool! The absolute peak of positive thinking! So, that's why when I got a 0 on my test the other day,I told my mom: "I haven't failed. I've just found 50 wrong ways to fill in an answer sheet!" You just didn't study enough! Of course you'd get scolded! She got super mad. Well, yeah! But hey, there's no doubt that our modern lives exist thanks to Edison. That's very true. I'm planning to learn from Edison and come up with a new invention myself. Oh, that sounds good! What kind of invention? An "absolutely never be late alarm clock"! Wow, sounds promising. How does it work? When it reaches the time
