Kylie Jenner’s journey from reality-TV fame to beauty mogul has always come with one major debate: can she really be called “self-made”?
Jenner has consistently defended the idea, pointing to the fact that she built Kylie Cosmetics into a major business after launching her Lip Kits in 2015. According to Forbes, she used around $250,000 from her modeling earnings to launch the brand, eventually selling 51% of the company to Coty for $600 million in 2020.
However, the “self-made” label has remained controversial because Kylie was already famous and had access to the enormous Kardashian-Jenner platform. Critics argue that her family name, television exposure and social-media following gave her advantages that most entrepreneurs simply do not have.
The billionaire debate became even more complicated in 2020, when Forbes revised its estimate of Jenner’s fortune and said she no longer qualified as a billionaire. The publication reported that Coty’s filings showed Kylie Cosmetics was considerably smaller than previously represented.
Still, the argument over the label doesn't erase what Jenner accomplished commercially. She turned her personal brand and enormous audience into a consumer business, created products that became highly recognizable and successfully expanded beyond cosmetics.
Today, Forbes lists Jenner as a self-made entrepreneur, with her 2025 profile estimating her fortune at $670 million.
Ultimately, the debate comes down to what “self-made” really means. Kylie did not start from an ordinary financial or social position—but she did turn celebrity influence into a business empire of her own. And for Jenner, that distinction is clearly important.
