00:00Last season it was the seventh best away record in the Premier League, seven wins.

00:05I just wonder what that kind of record, what confidence that gives you going into your first away game of
00:10the season as well.
00:11Well, we hope that we can follow up and do as well as we did last year away from home.
00:17The biggest pleasing part was we always travelled with great away support, big away support,
00:22and they got some really good days last year.
00:24So I hope we can continue.
00:26I mentioned last week in the press conference about can we improve our form at the Hill Dickinson
00:32and try and do better at home, which hopefully gets a few more points as well.
00:36But obviously our away form last year was very good.
00:39If you can improve on that away form even further from last year.
00:43Yeah, well, look, it's a big ask in this league to win games away from home in this league.
00:47It's really difficult.
00:49But we start and hopefully we can continue as well as we did last year.
00:52What do you expect from Bournemouth then under new management, obviously?
00:58Well, I know Marcus slightly because I went to watch Red Bull Salzburg when he was the manager there for
01:03a little while.
01:04So I had a trip over and met him before.
01:08I think he's had a really good career.
01:10He's got a lot of the Red Bull sort of DNA in his work.
01:16And I think that Bournemouth overall have been a side in recent seasons who have done amazing with what they've
01:22done,
01:22whether it be their recruitment, whether it be the way the team's played, the managers they've chosen.
01:27They've done good.
01:28So I think Marcus will give them a good go.
01:32They performed well last week against Manchester City.
01:35They were unlucky not to take something from the game.
01:37So, yeah, another new manager in the Premier League.
01:41But Marcus has got quite a bit of experience.
01:44With regard to your own recruitment, what hopes do you have now of Jack Grealish coming back?
01:49He obviously got the winner down there last season as well.
01:51But given it appears that this would be his preferred move as well?
01:55Well, we've not made any final decisions on that.
01:58But we are in the recruitment business at the moment and we are looking to see if we can bring
02:03some players in if possible.
02:07But there's no guarantee and to name just one person would be wrong.
02:11Jack, though, potentially coming back is being linked with Illiman and Die possibly going the other way.
02:16I just wonder from your perspective, is there any kind of accuracy to that?
02:20Or is it something that you'd even entertain, particularly at this late stage of the win?
02:23Well, again, I wouldn't talk about players, individual players at other clubs.
02:26Jack's not at our club.
02:28He was brilliant for us, great boy.
02:30But it's wrong for me to talk about him, he's at another club.
02:34And we're certainly not in a hurry to sell our best players, that's for sure.
02:38With regard to Illiman, can you kind of put into context just how important it is and almost how important
02:42it is to keep hold of him?
02:45Well, I've just said, I don't think we need to do anything.
02:48We've got nothing to be concerned about.
02:49As far as I know, we've had no contact from any club.
02:53Somebody told me we had contact from, I think it was Al-Halal, during the summer.
02:56We had nothing from them.
02:59So a lot of stuff that floats around is not always true.
03:02Maybe this is true, but certainly the stuff previous wasn't.
03:05How hopeful are you of getting at least some of your targets in before that deadline?
03:11Not sure yet, but we'll do our very best to try and get something here if we can.
03:16David, obviously Everton's not the only club that has not been able to get their targets in when they would
03:21like earlier in the window, for instance.
03:23What have you found has been the problem during this window, from your experience?
03:28Probably not much different from any other window.
03:30I think it's much the same.
03:31I think the World Cup probably has played a part in things maybe even a bit later.
03:35I think the prices being so large at the start, probably has got a certain group of clubs unable to
03:42compete at that level.
03:44And I think that's probably changed the market.
03:47You know, everybody's interested.
03:51Sky talked a lot about the big signings, but there's still quite a few smaller ones behind it at some
03:57clubs as well.
03:58But from the players that you've got, how positive are the signs that you're seeing on the pitch?
04:02Or very early days?
04:04Look, it's very early days and we're really pleased with the opening two games.
04:09So we need to try and continue to build that momentum and get us in a position where we think
04:15that we're strong and we can do that.
04:17As I said before the other night, we still need to get stronger than what we are at the moment.
04:22What do you see as the most positive aspect of how things have come together?
04:26I think we've played well in the games.
04:28I think, and also, you know, we've been trying to create more chances.
04:31I think that's probably certainly evident in the games against both Crystal Palace and against Preston.
04:40So that's a positive for us that we're getting them.
04:42We've took some of the chances the other night.
04:45We had some bigger ones against Crystal Palace we could have taken.
04:48So I think that's positive that we're getting a few more attacking opportunities to score.

04:57Just leading up from that, you talked about Tienan Barry the other night and the positives of him picking up
05:02the goals.
05:03But obviously there are chances there that you'd like him to maybe see scoring more.
05:07It's often said by managers that strikers tend to thrive on confidence.
05:11Is that an area that you're looking at specifically with him or some way of trying to nurture that?
05:15I think he's looked at himself.
05:17So to give the boy a lot of credit, you know, I think he's tried to improve himself.
05:22And those things are things that you need to sort of sometimes do yourself.
05:25Of course we'll give him confidence.
05:26We're doing every game.
05:28But ultimately you have to sort of get it yourself.
05:32You know, what it does by, you know, for a striker certainly scoring goals and getting in the right position
05:37and playing well if you can.
05:39And I think all players are the same.
05:41They want to make sure they have a good pass, good first touch, you know, good challenge.
05:46So centre forwards, I think, judge a lot of their confidence maybe by the goals they score.
05:53And mentioning the support that you've had away from home obviously Bournemouth is a long, long way to go from
05:58here for anybody.
05:59Does that make you appreciate it all the more when you see regular faces down there at a stadium like
06:04that,
06:04knowing that the fans have travelled so far and put so much effort into getting there?
06:08Well, I've been in the game long enough.
06:09I'm a football supporter myself.
06:12And I think that people who follow their club for years and all over the country,
06:16it takes a lot to do, a lot of effort.
06:19Costly as well nowadays with train fares, et cetera, all changing.
06:24So it's difficult for supporters.
06:27So we don't take it for granted.
06:29And I think that our away support over certainly last season since I've been back was fantastic.

06:40When you say you're not sure if the targets will come in, do you feel supported right now at the
06:45club with those transfer targets?
06:47And how is it working?
06:48Well, I think all managers are always looking for more.
06:52I'm trying to give over Tony's the best they possibly can and push for everything.
06:56So that's my job to try and get them the best team, best players I can.
07:02How does it operate then?
07:04Are you, I think the CEO had said there was other people looking for targets because you can't be across
07:09all the clubs around the world.
07:10Do you get the final say?
07:12Are they presented to you?
07:14Yeah, mostly, mostly I do.
07:18We have lots of scouts who are out working, which are doing it.
07:22So they're the people who bring maybe people in which we wouldn't know so well, maybe from South America, et
07:27cetera.
07:27So I've certainly got an idea of a lot of the players, whether it's throughout Europe and in the UK.
07:33So getting the right ones, bringing them to the table at the right price, players who we're interested in, it
07:41sort of gets through the recruitment team who break it down and bring it in.
07:46There's two or three players here we'll look at and we make decisions on them.
07:51I know you don't want to speak about individual players.
07:53There are reports about Jake O'Brien, Michael Keane at the moment.
07:57It sounds like then that you don't want any outgoings if you can't get those in-goings.
08:03Is that the case?
08:04And can you keep hold of people if they're wanting starting places and you can't offer that right now?
08:09Well, we could only answer that if somebody made an offer.
08:12So any stories you hear, we're not going to be talking about offers for any of those players.
08:16We've not had no offers for any of those players.
08:19I just wanted to ask about Merlin Roll as well.
08:21Obviously, you're playing right back.
08:23If you can't get a right back, would he be happy to play there?
08:26And how do you manage that with players when they're playing out of position?
08:29Do they want to play in their usual position?
08:32Merlin does.
08:33Merlin's thrilled that he's getting the opportunity to start playing the games.
08:37He's desperate to play.
08:38He's desperate to show what he can do.
08:40And by the way, I think he's shown up really well in what he's done.
08:43I think that it's made a few people maybe question us talking about bringing in another right back.
08:49I think they've seen Merlin Roll play really well.
08:52So he's done well.
08:55And he's not a player who's questioning being out of position.
08:59So we're really happy for him.
09:01Do you like that from your players?
09:03If they're willing to go, I'll step up and I'll have a go at that?
09:07Well, I think when you've got a small squad like we have, we need players who are going to be
09:10flexible and play different positions and accept that they may have to do different jobs at different times.
09:15A great example was how Jimmy Gardner played when he went right back.
09:18And actually, I think maybe the first game of last season he might have to play left back because we
09:22didn't have Mikko.
09:24So we want players who are going to be not going to question it, want to do the job.
09:32And we've had to do that a couple of times.
09:34Paris and Armstrong had to play a bit wider last year in a couple of games for us at different
09:37times.
09:39So with the small squad that we've got, we have to try and make the players flexible.
09:43And thankfully, we've got a few who are certainly doing that.
09:46Can I just check on injuries?
09:48Have you got a time frame for Christine Norgard?
09:51Did Hayden Hackney have a slight knock?
09:53Hayden Hackney had a rolled his ankle in midweek.
09:57Last week, so that's why he didn't play in midweek.
10:01We'll see.
10:02It'll be touch and go for Hayden, I think.
10:06What's the other one?
10:08Christian is still not making great progress at the moment.
10:14So it's not something which we're probably going to get back quickly.
10:20So we'll just need to see how that develops.
10:22And James Garner fine as well after the other day?
10:25Well, he's not fine because he's not played any games in pre-season.
10:28So we probably, if we hadn't had the injury to Hayden, we wouldn't have started him in the game, certainly
10:35against Preston.
10:36But he's made a remarkably quick recovery from his hernia, which is great as a player.
10:42You don't see it very often when the player's pushing to get back quicker and in time.
10:46Jimmy done that.
10:48I think he done great in the game.
10:50I still think he's off his levels at the moment.
10:52But it's the minutes he needs in the games and these bits of the games, which hopefully he'll soon pick
