Spain and Norway are the other teams in this group.
Transcript
00:00And here are the teams, and as usual, Yugoslavia draw their players from all over Europe.
00:06The top divisions in Italy and Spain, Holland and Portugal.
00:09Number 11, the Hailevich of Lazio, renowned for his cunning free kicks.
00:13Number 8, who you've mentioned, Jatovic, who scored the winning goal in the European Cup final two years ago,
00:18now plays for Fiorentina.
00:20And Kovacevic, number 18, Sheffield Wednesday fans will remember him, had a short spell there.
00:27The Slovenian captain, number 4, Darko Milenic, used to play for the old Yugoslavia.
00:31So did number 7, Novak.
00:33Number 8, Alice Cech, the first Slovenian to reach 50 caps.
00:37But number 10, Zlatko Zajovic, is the fulcum of the side.
00:41Nine goals in the qualifiers, we're looking forward to seeing him.
00:45In fact, their three defenders, Milinovic, Milenic and Galic, will be flanked by two wing-backs.
00:53Number 7, Novak, and number 19, Karic.
00:57And there you're looking at Petr Agma Miacevic, his son Luka is eight years old today,
01:03and Miacevic has said he will dedicate any goal he scores to his little boy.
01:07And he is a prolific goal scorer, 22 goals in what up to now has been 49 caps.
01:13This is his 50th, so it's a landmark.
01:15And straight from the kick-off, it's Rudonia for Slovenia on the left-hand side,
01:20up against Dudic, the young right-back of Yugoslavia.
01:23And there's Katinets.
01:25They've been very strict on that so far in the competition.
01:28Zajovic is standing somewhat to the side here.
01:36And left, as I thought, for Milinovic, and not too far away.
01:41Zeljko Milinovic, who just recently, in a friendly, put Slovenia in front in Paris against the French.
01:48They thought they were 2-0 up and lost 3-2.
01:51Well, he struck this well.
01:52Well, it's a clever take and free kick, wasn't it?
01:55It's a nice little backfield by Zajovic, which obviously took the wall completely out of play.
01:59And for a moment, Kroa was scrambling across the goal.
02:09Trying to slide that ball through to Kovacevic, but good defending by Slovenia.
02:14They've got some more to do here, and Kovacevic goes through here this time, and he's onside.
02:18Good save by Zajovic from the former Sheffield Wednesday man, for whom Juventus played all of 14 million pounds.
02:26Darko Kovacevic, Mark.
02:28Yeah, a super run as well by Kovacevic, wasn't it?
02:31Alongside the side of the central defender.
02:34Zajovic really happened to make the save.
02:37And Zajovic's coming in for the cross, and there was no need, really, for Karic to touch that, but he
02:43did.
02:43And Yugoslavia have a corner.
02:47It's a lack of communication, wasn't it, between Karic and the goalkeeper.
02:52Those are the type of balls, John, that you'll find that...
02:56Juan doesn't like playing in that position, it's said.
02:58He prefers midfield, where he's played before, but...
03:01He started off with him in the left-back spot tonight.
03:03This is Pavline.
03:08And he gets a free kick.
03:09In fact, the match very much a case of stop-start with free kicks and corners early on.
03:13This is Karic with the long ball.
03:16Oh, and there's a good goal!
03:18And it's Zajovic!
03:19Slovenia have scored their first goal in a major international finals.
03:23And their most famous player has put it in the net.
03:29A good header by Zlatko Zajovic.
03:34Hugely celebrated here, both in the crowd and on the bench.
03:37And, of course, on the field.
03:39The ball swung in from the left-hand side, and Zajovic, Mark, gets ahead of his defender.
03:45Yeah, that's a super header, wasn't it?
03:47I mean, they took the free kick very, very quickly, Slovenia.
03:50And Yugoslavia just knocked off for a second.
03:52But the quality of the cross, again, from the left-hand side,
03:55that's three or four times now that the ball's been played in from there.
03:59And it's a superb finish.
04:01Well, it was a superb finish.
04:03And the man that provided it scored nine goals in the qualifiers.
04:07Now he gets the first one for Slovenia in the finals themselves,
04:10with 23 minutes gone now.
04:17Well, that's a huge boost for the underdogs.
04:19But here come Yugoslavia straight away.
04:25Understand that you didn't get a terribly good view of the goal from the coverage here.
04:34And then gets the better of three of them.
04:35Good play by the number 11.
04:37And here's Udovic, picked it up from Karic.
04:39Oh, and Zajovic is in again!
04:43This time stopped by Kral.
04:46But, goodness, that was nearly 2-0 Slovenia.
04:49Wow, what a fantastic opportunity.
04:51Definitely onside when the ball was played.
04:54And I thought it'd score.
04:55I thought it'd score with Izajovic.
04:57And I tell you, that could be the turning point of the game.
05:00Kral made the save.
05:02Doesn't matter which part of the body you make it with, just make it.
05:04Exactly what he did.
05:11Well, a good first half for the underdog Slovenia.
05:15The newcomers to the championship are in the lead.
05:18And it's down to this man, Zlatko Zajovic,
05:20with the crispest and cleverest of headers,
05:26which put his side in front halfway through the first half.
05:29And Yugoslavia, the senior nation here, have so far been a massive disappointment.
05:34The halftime score in Charleroi, Slovenia 1, Yugoslavia 0.
05:40Well, if they stop the music over the loudspeaker, we can get the football going again.
05:44That was Graham Pohl, by the way, in his role as fourth official tonight, the reserve referee.
05:48He has got an appointment of his own, of course, as the championship goes on.
05:52And hopefully he might have more than one, the English refereeing representative here.
05:57And already there was an injury in the first minute to Galic.
06:03It took a blow in the face there.
06:05I think it was Kovacevic, actually, Mark, who was involved in that.
06:09Yeah, it was a ball that was laid back from the kick-off that was just played towards Kovacevic.
06:15And the next thing is, Galic is on the floor.
06:18And the referee never saw it, certainly.
06:19And there didn't seem to be any great reaction from the rest of the Slovenian players.
06:24So we'd have to believe that it'd maybe just be accidental.
06:32So Kovacevic, once in Sheffield Wednesday, goes off.
06:35And Milosevic, once in Aston Villa, comes on.
06:38Well, light for light, John, but very straight.
06:41Milosevic is ready at half-time.
06:42Why put him on seven minutes into the second half?
06:44Oh, there's a header and a goal!
06:48It's Pavlin!
06:49And Slovenia have gone 2-0 up.
06:53Zajovic took the free-kick this time, and Pavlin scores with a header.
06:57To add to the one that Zajovic got earlier.
07:00And Slovenia are in some sort of dream world.
07:03They're 2-0 up against Yugoslavia in the European Championship Finals.
07:09Zajovic curls in a perfectly placed free-kick, and Pavlin gets the header ahead of the defender.
07:16Again, all the pace on the cross.
07:18As long as you get in front of the defender.
07:19Defender this time, which was Djukic.
07:22I mean, this is a wonderful header by Pavlin.
07:24All it really does is help the pace on the ball, which was provided by Zajovic.
07:31And straight away from the kick-off, they're on the attack again.
07:342-0 to Slovenia.
07:36Certainly the biggest upset so far of these Euro 2000 Finals.
07:41And Yugoslavia completely rattled.
07:46Well, I just wonder, John, with the substitution, whether they just literally took their eye off the ball, Yugoslavia, with
07:52the confrontation aspect.
07:55Well, I think it was more of the reaction, to be honest.
07:57But anyway, here's Zajovic leaving the free-kick to Miljanić.
08:04In it goes from Novak.
08:06Oh, and Rodonia coming in unmarked.
08:08Could have been free.
08:10Wow.
08:12When will Yugoslavia learn yet another left-footed cross, whipped across them.
08:18Great late run as well by Rodonia.
08:24They look so one-paced, Yugoslavia, compared to what we've come to expect of them in the past.
08:29And I'd call it no place at the moment, John.
08:31They just haven't started at all in this game whatsoever.
08:34And, you know, they gave you...
08:35Oh, he's given it away.
08:36Mihailovic has given it to Zajovic.
08:38And it's free.
08:40This now is approaching unbelievable.
08:47For a European Championship match, newcomers Slovenia go 3-0 up against Yugoslavia.
08:54And one of the best players in Europe, Mihailovic, makes the most crass of errors.
09:00And Zajovic gets his second goal of the match.
09:03What on earth was Mihailovic doing?
09:05So casual.
09:06Already two down.
09:08Took the ball from the goalkeeper.
09:13And gave it straight to Zlatko Zajovic.
09:16He wouldn't have had a better pass than that from his own team, Mark.
09:19Well, it's turned into a rout.
09:21It would make it even worse, John.
09:22He's tried the outside of the left foot one.
09:24I'm a good player pass, which Zajovic's read all the way.
09:28And great composure.
09:30Just waited for Kroll to commit himself and just slotted it past him.
09:3357 minutes gone in Charlois.
09:36It's the score that perhaps the football world wouldn't have expected.
09:41Slovenia 3, Yugoslavia 0.
09:47And two goals for the multi-talented Zlatko Zajovic.
09:52And he certainly didn't hang around when he got presented with that opportunity.
09:56Having had one saved in the first half, of course.
09:59In a one-to-one with the goalkeeper.
10:03Indeed, had Rodonja put the one in at the far post earlier,
10:06it could have been even worse for Yugoslavia.
10:08There's me telling them just to take the time and close the game down.
10:12Well, they've now got the thing that England didn't have, haven't they?
10:15The third goal.
10:16Looking away from Slovenia.
10:18There's a goal again for Zajovic.
10:20It's been an outstanding performance and fully merited as well.
10:25But they have to look at the Yugoslavs, John.
10:27And they really do have to question themselves and their attitude.
10:30You can feel also...
10:32Oh, Mihailovic.
10:33Mihailovic has already been booked.
10:34He's off, surely.
10:35Second yellow card.
10:37Red to follow.
10:38Mihailovic walks.
10:40Having given away the third goal,
10:43he now brings his team down to ten men.
10:48Well, absolutely pathetic.
10:51For a player who plays his football at such a highest level
10:54and in a league, really,
10:57that we know all about frustrations and tempers and Serie A,
11:00it's just absolutely stupid.
11:03It's Boscov.
11:04What on earth?
11:06Must he be thinking about Mihailovic?
11:09And they're through again here.
11:11It's Novak.
11:12Goalkeeper saves.
11:14Zajovic almost got to the follow-up.
11:16He was a player unmarked on the far side as well.
11:19Rudonja, was it?
11:20And Kral's injured, I think.
11:22Kral actually made a very, very brave challenge on Zajovic.
11:26The ball played inside the full-back.
11:27Lovely early cross as well by Novak.
11:30It's a brave challenge by Kral.
11:32He knows he's one of those,
11:33you're going to get injured as a goalkeeper,
11:34but you've got to go for it.
11:48This is coming deep towards Mihailovic.
11:55Oh, it's a good effort by Drulovic.
12:01This is the best we've seen from Yugoslavia.
12:05The ball headed out on the chest,
12:07and then the volley.
12:08Oh, that was going in.
12:09Good save.
12:11Corner.
12:23Oh, a chance.
12:25Fear from the loss of it to tap one in.
12:27It was knocked back by Djukic,
12:29and Yugoslavia have got a goal back.
12:32Boscov thinks that perhaps he's still hope.
12:36Well, it was virtually on the line,
12:37I think,
12:37when Milosevic tapped it in.
12:40But Slovenia seemed to think the ball was going out here.
12:43It's their own player who heads it upwards,
12:45and then Djukic on the far side,
12:48number five,
12:49pulls it back from the line,
12:51and Milosevic just tucks it in here.
12:55Goalkeeper was out of his ground.
12:56It's 3-1, Mark.
12:57Well, they just fell asleep,
12:58Slovenia, didn't they?
12:59And certainly very, very guilty of not clearing the ball.
13:02Paid the penalty.
13:03Here they come again.
13:05Drukic.
13:10Well, what an eventful evening we've had here.
13:13It's 3-1 now to Slovenia.
13:15Yugoslavia, the ten men have got a goal back.
13:20And we're 20 minutes into the second half.
13:25That's a free kick again to Yugoslavia.
13:27Could they stage a most unlikely recovery?
13:35Stojkovic putting the ball down.
13:40Now then,
13:42test here of the Slovenian nerve.
13:50No, it's swinging away.
13:53Wow.
13:55It's a waste, isn't it?
13:56One of the reasons it's a waste.
13:58It's not the fact that it went out of play.
13:59It was a definite arm
14:01whipped out,
14:02and I'll tell you who it was in just a second.
14:06In the meantime,
14:07this is Miatovic.
14:07It was Savo Milosevic who was involved.
14:10And here's Krulovic!
14:12And it's 3-2!
14:17Yugoslavia are back in the match.
14:22They're down to ten men.
14:24Milosevic
14:25has already got himself into trouble.
14:27The referee is now talking to Nodz.
14:29There's a reaction after the goal.
14:31There was something said.
14:32And as I said earlier,
14:34Milosevic may have to answer a charge
14:36for an elbow that the referee didn't see.
14:38But this is the important thing at the moment.
14:40And Drulovic drills that goal past Dubanovic to make it Slovenia 3,
14:47Yugoslavia 2.
14:48Yeah,
14:49Drulovic is the right idea to it, but he had acres and acres of space.
14:53He just trundled into the penalty area and was able to pick his spot.
14:56We've talked before about the first goal Slovenia conceded in the fall in the Sleeton.
15:00They really have knocked off at the moment.
15:04The Slovenian player concern didn't go down.
15:07So I think that incident I referred to may well go unnoticed.
15:11But certainly the goal didn't.
15:12Because Yugoslavia, with nearly 20 minutes still left,
15:17are only one behind.
15:18And Slovenia, as we thought perhaps,
15:21when their nerve was tested for the first time,
15:23appear to be perhaps clumbling themselves.
15:32Milosevic.
15:36That's a free kick.
15:38A free kick to Yugoslavia.
15:40Given against Galic.
15:43I thought he played the ball.
15:45So did I.
15:45No doubt about it.
15:49And Stojkovic has got it back.
15:51And Dudic is out right.
15:53And Milosevic goes for the shorter one.
15:59I think Galic is maybe not going to come back, you know.
16:03I think they might be preparing a substitute.
16:06Oh, and Yugoslavia around the back again.
16:08And it's a third one.
16:11And it's Sado Milosevic again.
16:15It's 3-3.
16:16This is extraordinary.
16:18It's developing into one of the most unlikely matches in the history of the European Championship.
16:24Sado Milosevic has come on and got two goals.
16:27And Yugoslavia have come from 3-0 down to level at 3-3.
16:35Well, it was such an easy move.
16:37Look at the eighth acres of space again.
16:39But Yugoslavia, I think it's Drulovic this time.
16:41Against Passamarka far too easy.
16:43And he just picks a spot for Milosevic.
16:48And Slovenia are going to make that substitution.
16:51Pavlovich, number 21, is going to come on in place of Pavlin.
16:58So...
17:07And Galic is all right again.
17:13So they're back to 11 players, Slovenia.
17:16Yugoslavia still only have ten.
17:18And it's 3-3 all here in Charleroi.
17:21Hope you're enjoying this at home.
17:23It's quite unexpected entertainment, isn't it?
17:26This is Pavlovich who's just come on.
17:36Well, Mark, did you expect this?
17:37No, John.
17:38The other thing as well is with Slovenia,
17:40they stopped passing it.
17:42And consequently, they've all tried to have an extra touch.
17:44The movement stopped.
17:46The man on the board doesn't really have any more options anymore.
17:49And, I mean, talk about static in defence.
17:52I make it three goals, Mark, in six minutes for Yugoslavia.
17:59Two of them from the Losevic.
18:05Just imagine if he'd come on at half-time.
18:08And they might even go and win it from here
18:10because Slovenia seemed to have completely crumbled.
18:18Everybody was talking about the England-Germany match
18:20being the highlight in Charleroi.
18:22Stojkovic, will it be, Mark?
18:24Yeah, most certainly, John.
18:26I think they'll find that they'll be looking for the runners
18:28to make the run early,
18:30take where he wants to play the ball.
18:40Stojkovic for Yugoslavia.
18:41Oh, the flick off just over the bar from Lukanovic.
18:47Well, I'm not sure whether Milenic, the Slovenian captain,
18:53I just thought he had maybe the last touch on that.
18:57We're going to have a bonus here.
18:59Three minutes of stoppage time
19:00to see if Boscov's team can complete the impossible.
19:04Here comes Slovenia again, though.
19:06Pavlovich.
19:07Oh, and Zajovic, is he offside?
19:09Yes, they're flagging.
19:11It's an offside here.
19:13It wouldn't have mattered if Zajovic had put that one away.
19:18Yes, in fairness to the referee's assistant,
19:20his flag went up very, very early.
19:22Just, just mind you, but just as enough.
19:26It was a correct decision, as you say.
19:32Here's Stojkovic for Yugoslavia.
19:34Milosevic goes the other way, can't find him.
19:41Well, they've certainly had their money's worth in Charleroi tonight.
19:46First match they've staged here in Euro 2000.
19:52And there may be more to come yet.
19:54Osterz is brought down just outside the Yugoslav penalty area by Nodz.
19:58It's a free kick
20:01to Slovenia.
20:03And Milenic and Milinovic are both coming forward on the far side.
20:09So is Galic.
20:14It's Zajovic to take it.
20:19Well, he will eventually.
20:21Oh, the Yugoslavs are changing the position of the ball.
20:24It's Zajovic who's come over to contest the
20:28placing of the kick with the referee.
20:30And a lot of pushing and shoving going on in the penalty area there.
20:34An awful lot.
20:36You can see some of that.
20:37There'll be trouble.
20:37Yes, he's seen it.
20:39The Anker's just getting them all to calm down today.
20:42Come on, fellas.
20:44Sort it out.
20:44We've seen that one or two times he's already given in this competition
20:47for a slight tug of the shirt.
20:48Now then, is it going to be a storybook finish for Slovenia?
20:51Goalkeeper's missed it.
20:52It still could be.
20:54Oh, and it's been hooked away.
20:57Milinovic nearly won it for Slovenia.
21:02Where on earth was Paul going?
21:04Dudic, I think, got it away.
21:07Goalkeeper was completely lost.
21:09Corner.
21:09And this time he comes to punch.
21:13What a finish.
21:14Check.
21:16Offside, Zajovic.
21:22Contained the excitement in the crowd there, I think.
21:24And here's a foul by Czech.
21:27And Yugoslavia go up the other end and get a free kick.
21:29Deep into stoppage time now.
21:31I think the three minutes are up.
21:33Indeed they are.
21:35And an appropriate number on which to finish
21:37because here we have a 3-3 draw
21:40that will go down in European Championship total or almost, I think.
21:44Slovenia, the underdogs, the newcomers.
21:47The Independent Nation, 3-0 up
21:50and against 10 men.
21:53And indeed, in the last seconds here,
21:54they could almost have won the game 4-3.
21:57Having conceded three goals in six minutes,
22:00Dudic cleared off the line.
22:03Some night...
