00:11These historic gardens and landscapes
00:14provide the setting to these wonderful
00:16historic buildings
00:17and they must be protected and preserved
00:20but they've also got to be
00:22adaptable and they've also got to
00:24change over the next few years otherwise
00:25we're going to lose them. It's difficult right
00:28now I get the feeling we're in uncharted
00:30territory
00:31I've never felt so uncertain
00:34about the future in
00:35historic gardens and landscapes as I have now
00:41Honestly the trees that seem
00:44to be having the most
00:46difficult time during the extreme heat
00:48and drought are the trees that we
00:50really associate with an English
00:52garden or an English landscape
00:53more trees will have their lives
00:56shortened and
00:59over time
01:00more trees will die which sounds like
01:01a terribly depressing thing to say
01:03but I think there's only so
01:06much stress they can withstand
01:10We interviewed
01:11quite a few gardeners and owners
01:14of sites and we also did an online
01:16survey and one of the things that revealed
01:18was that everybody was
01:20conclusive that climate change is having an impact
01:22on the sites that they manage
01:24that the impacts of climate change are being
01:26seen whether it's drought as we've got
01:28now in the UK or whether it's
01:29heavy storms and rain
01:32milder winters
01:33all the gardeners reported that they're seeing these
01:36impacts in their gardens
01:38but they're really struggling to then
01:39cope with the changes that are happening
01:41because the change is happening actually quite quickly now
01:44so
01:48you
