00:24Yemen's Saudi-backed government struck the runway at Sana'a airport
00:27to stop an Iranian aircraft from landing.
00:29The Houthis blamed Saudi Arabia, called it aggression, and ended the truce.
00:33Within hours, they fired ballistic missiles and drones at Abha airport in the south of the kingdom.
00:37The Saudi-led coalition said its air defenses dealt with the ballistic missile threat,
00:41and no major casualties were reported.
00:43The fighting spread from the air to the sea.
00:45Between July 19 and 23, the Houthis announced a blockade on shipping tied to Saudi Arabia
00:50and warned companies away from its ports.
00:52They then said they had struck two Saudi oil tankers, the Insilia and the Layla,
00:55with missiles and drones.
00:56Saudi state media confirmed that the Insilia was hit and caught fire at the bow,

01:03The sharpest exchange came on July 24 and 25.
01:06The Houthis claimed coordinated missile and drone strikes on oil sites in Jazan and Yambu,
01:11and posted video of fires near the Jazan refinery, the first attack of its kind there in about four years.
01:16Saudi civil defense told people in Jazan and Yambu to shelter,
01:19then later said the danger had passed.
01:21Reports said Saudi air defenses, including a Greek-operated Patriot battery at Yambu,
01:26intercepted at least two ballistic missiles aimed at the refineries.
01:29The Saudi-led coalition answered with strikes on Houthis sites in Hodada.
01:33The July missiles were fired by the Houthis in Yemen,
01:36a movement armed and guided with Iranian help, using weapons built on Iranian designs.
01:40Iran did not launch them directly.
01:42But earlier in the same year, Iran had, in numbers the border had never seen.
01:46After the United States and Israel struck Iran in late February,
01:49Iran launched barrages of missiles and drones at the Gulf states,
01:52and Saudi Arabia was a main target.
01:54Over the weeks that followed, the Saudi Ministry of Defense reported that it was stopping those threats by the hundreds.

02:04you have to look at the wall it spent decades and more than $80 billion to build.

02:12Saudi Arabia did not build its shield overnight, and it did not build it for a single war.

02:23The job belongs to its own military branch, the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces,
02:27run from an underground command center in Riyadh and tied together by a national network called Peace Shield.
02:32The reason for all of it sits a short flight to the north and across the border to the south.
02:36Iran had spent years building one of the largest missile arsenals in the region, closer to home,
02:40the Houthi movement in Yemen, the same force that reopened fire in July,
02:43had been firing missiles and drones across the southern border since the middle of the last decade.
02:48Saudi Arabia had been living under the threat of incoming fire long before Iran ever launched directly.
02:53Those years of Houthi attacks became a kind of training under fire.
02:56Saudi crews had spent a decade tracking and shooting at real targets,
03:00learning which alarms mattered and how fast they had to move.

04:48Saudi Arabia runs 17 long-range search radars that sweep hundreds of miles of sky,
04:53backed by early warning aircraft and by powerful ground radars tied to its newest systems.
04:57The same eyes that watch the north for Iran watch the south for the Houthi launches out of Yemen.

05:04where the incoming tracks are gathered onto one screen and matched to the battery's best place to fire.

05:12What a missile crew sees is not a guess.
05:14It is a track, a path, and a countdown.
05:16The whole chain from the flash over the launch site to the moment a battery is told to fire can
05:20run in minutes.
05:21For the final seconds of an intercept, it runs faster than a person can think,
05:25which is why the system is set to work on its own, with an operator confirming the shot.
05:29Then the shooting begins, and it begins high.
05:31The top layer of the Saudi shield is a system called THAAD,
05:34which stands for Terminal High Altitude Area Defense.
05:37Saudi Arabia agreed to buy it in 2017 in a deal worth around $15 billion,
05:42seven batteries with hundreds of interceptors and their own radars.
05:45The first battery came online around July of 2025, just months before the war.
05:49THAAD reaches up to the edge of space, striking ballistic missiles at heights of roughly 40 to 150 kilometers,
05:56and it kills them by slamming into them, rather than exploding nearby.
06:00Below THAAD sits the workhorse, the Patriot.
06:02Saudi Arabia fields more than 100 Patriot launchers spread across the country,
06:06a mix of older models built to knock down aircraft and cruise missiles,
06:10and newer Pac-3 rounds that hit ballistic missiles head-on in the last seconds of their fall.
06:14Standard practice is to fire two interceptors at a single missile to raise the odds of a kill.
06:18That doctrine works and it is costly, and it burns through rounds fast.
06:22In February of 2026, as the war opened, the United States approved a fresh Patriot package
06:27for the kingdom worth around $9 billion, with hundreds more interceptors to refill the stocks.
06:33Under the Patriots are shorter-range guns,
06:35and newer weapons bought from South Korea and elsewhere to fill the gaps and to handle drones.
06:39Layer by layer, the design is meant to give every threat more than one enemy on the way down.
06:43On paper, it is one of the deepest air defense networks on Earth.
06:46The War of 2026 was about to test whether it worked when hundreds of real missiles arrived at once.

06:56The clearest picture of the system at its best came on two dates in the spring.
07:00The first was March 19, 2026, over the Red Sea coast.
07:03Iran sent two ballistic missiles toward the SAMREF oil refinery at Yanbu,
07:07a plant that turns out fuel for export and feeds the kingdom's income.
07:11The crew that answered was Greek.
07:13A Greek-operated Patriot battery had been stationed in the kingdom since 2021 under a quiet bilateral
07:18mission to help guard the oil coast, and it had sat there for years without firing a shot.
07:23Yanbu changed that.
07:24The Greek gunners fired, and both Iranian missiles were destroyed before they reached the refinery.
07:29It was confirmed by Reuters and by the Greek defense ministry,
07:32and it was the first combat engagement Greek forces had fought in the war.
07:35Two missiles came, and two missiles were stopped.
07:37The second date was April 5, over Riyadh.
07:40This time Iran launched a coordinated wave, seven ballistic missiles and ten drones aimed
07:44at the capital.
07:45Time to arrive while diplomats were meeting over the conflict.
07:48It did not come in one push.
07:49The attack rolled in over more than one wave, which forced the batteries around the city
07:53to reload and fire again, while the sky was still full.
07:56When it was over, the Ministry of Defense reported that all seven ballistic missiles
07:59and all ten drones had been brought down.
08:01The only injuries came from falling debris.
08:04When the wreckage of one intercept hurt two people on the ground in Alkarj,
08:07a town southeast of the capital.
08:08Seven missiles fired, seven missiles stopped.
08:11Nights like that work because a ballistic missile does not get one enemy on the way down.
08:15It gets several.
08:16THAAD can reach out and strike it high, near the edge of space, guided by the long-range
08:20ANTPY-2 radar that tracks an Iranian missile from hundreds of miles away.
08:24If THAAD misses, a Patriot waits lower to take the last shot in the final seconds of the fall.
08:29That is also why the interceptor counts often ran ahead of the threat counts.
08:33Doctrine sent two or more interceptors at a single missile.
08:36So stopping one threat could mean firing several rounds.
08:39The layers gave the kingdom more than one chance to be right.
08:42The same story repeated months later.
08:44When the Houthis reopened fire in July and sent ballistic missiles toward the refineries
08:48at Yanbu, a Greek-operated Patriot on that coast again intercepted at least two of them.
08:52Same place, same crew, same result, in a different season and against a different enemy.
08:57Those nights were not alone.
08:58Across late February, March, and April, the Saudi Ministry of Defense announced full or near-full
09:03interceptions of missiles aimed at Riyadh, at the Eastern Province oil fields, and at Prince
09:07Sultan Air Base, the base south of the capital that hosts American forces.
09:11Across the wider Gulf, the number of missiles and drones fired in the first weeks ran past
09:141,000, and Saudi Arabia was catching its share of them night after night.
09:18There is a reason the ballistic missiles fared so badly against the shield.
09:21A ballistic missile flies a high, curved path that a good radar can read early and predict,
09:26which gives the interceptors time and a clear place to aim.
09:29It was a far cry from 2019, when the radars faced the wrong way.
09:33Now the command center watched a full circle and passed each track to the right battery
09:36in seconds.
09:37Trackers at the Institute for the Study of War noted that the number of Iranian launches
09:41at Saudi Arabia actually fell off through the first three weeks of March, as the barrages
09:45met a wall that kept holding.
09:46The official count kept climbing, with the word intercepted next to almost every entry.
09:50If the story ended there, the title would be simple and true.
09:53But the full record carries another column, and it is the one that decides whether every single
09:58missile was really stopped.
10:01What gots through?
10:04Other column is the one the attackers got through.
10:06For all the nights that ended in clean intercepts, the honest number for the war was not 100%.
10:11Independent analysts who tracked the fighting put the Saudi success rate against ballistic
10:14missiles at around 85-90%, high enough to protect most of what mattered, but short of perfect.
10:20Against drones, the rate sat near 85% as well, and often a little lower, because drones are
10:24the hardest thing in the sky to stop.
10:26A Shad drone flies low and slow and is small on radar, and Iran sent them in swarms meant
10:31to swamp the defense and soak up its interceptors.
10:33Some got through.
10:34Early in the war, drones started a fire at the Ra's Tenura oil facilities on the Gulf Coast.
10:38Others struck the United States Embassy compound in Riyadh, setting off a fire and damaging the
10:43grounds.
10:43Falling debris from intercepts, the same debris that hurt two people in Alkarj, came down on
10:48towns more than once.
10:49And in July, when the Houthis reopened fire, the Ancelia tanker was hit at sea and set ablaze
10:54even as the batteries on land held.
10:56The blockade that came with it pushed oil prices past $100 a barrel and sent some ships
11:00turning back from Saudi ports.
11:02The heaviest blow landed on March 27, 2026.
11:05A strike reached Prince Sultan Air Base, the same base the defenses had guarded on so many
11:10other nights.
11:10This time projectiles got through.
11:12American aircraft on the ground were destroyed or damaged, including at least one E-3 Sentry,
11:16a flying radar plane worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
11:2029 American personnel were wounded.
11:22On that night, the shield did not hold.
11:23Iran leaned into every weakness it could find.
11:26It fired solid fuel missiles like the Ka-Bar Shekin, which launch fast from mobile trucks
11:30and carry warheads that can steer in the final seconds to throw off a radar's aim.
11:34It mixed those with cruise missiles and drones, so the defense had to solve three problems
11:38at once.
11:39It sent decoys to pull interceptors away from the real threats.
11:42And it aimed some of its fire at the sensors themselves.
11:45At the radars that make the whole system work, which caused short spells of degraded coverage
11:49in the early fighting.
11:50None of it broke the shield, but all of it wore at it.
11:53There was also a price that never showed up in the interception counts.
11:56Each Pac-3 interceptor costs around $4 million, a THAAD round costs far more, and Doctrine
12:02fires two at a time.
12:03The Iranian drones they were shooting down cost a few tens of thousands each.
12:06Iran was trading cheap machines for expensive ones on purpose, and it worked on the balance
12:11sheet.
12:11By one early assessment, Saudi Arabia had burned through most of its best interceptor stock
12:15in the opening weeks, drawn down by around 86% before fresh supplies could arrive.
12:20The system also leaned on American satellites, radars and support to close the kill chain,
12:24and it had to cover a vast country, with oil fields, air bases, cities and holy sites all
12:29spread far apart.
12:30A defense can win almost every night and still be stretched thin and running low.
12:33There is one more honest note.
12:35Some analysts looked at the debris on the ground after the clean sweep nights and questioned whether
12:39every claimed intercept was really a hit.
12:42The official counts came from the Saudi Ministry of Defense, and the truth of a single night
12:46is hard to prove from the wreckage.
12:48The record is strong, and parts of it are still argued over.
12:50So did Saudi air defenses stop every single Iranian missile?
12:54On some nights, yes.
12:55Over Riyadh on April 5, seven ballistic missiles came and seven were stopped.
12:58Over Yanbu, two came and two were stopped.
13:00In March and again when the Houthis returned in July.
13:03Those salvos really were 100%, and that is where the headline comes from.
13:06Across the whole campaign though, Saudi Arabia stopped the large majority of what Iran and
13:10its allies fired, protected most of its cities, bases and oil, and did far better than it
13:14had in 2019.
13:15But some missiles and many more drones got through.
13:17People were hurt, aircraft were lost, and the interceptor stocks ran low.
13:20The 100% was real for single waves.
13:23Across the whole war, the record was lower.
13:25The truth of the Saudi shield sits between the headline and the debris.
13:28It was one of the most successful air defenses ever tested at that scale, and it was still not
