00:01This forecast from the Australian energy market operator is saying that in 10 years time these
00:08data centres and there are just dozens and dozens of them popping up around the country
00:13will consume 13% of the energy supplied into the grid, the national electricity market,
00:20up from 3%, so a massive jump. So the Australian energy market has looked at about 225 known
00:28projects of data centres. They're all at sort of various stages but ones that do want to connect
00:34to the national electricity market or the NEM and says that even with a sort of high cancellation rate
00:40of various projects they're still going to consume a massive amount of energy from the grid.
00:47Particularly interesting because the forecast from AEMO just a year ago was that they wouldn't consume
00:53that sort of percentage of power until sometime after 2050 and we're now of course talking in 10
01:00years time so in the mid 2030s. So a very interesting forecast from the Australian energy market operator.
01:08Yeah, one of which might flow into conversations at government levels. We know that the Prime Minister
01:13will detail more of his proposed data centre standards at a business council dinner tonight.
01:19What is he expected to say on that? Yeah, so these are these national standards that we've been
01:23talking about for some weeks now. He's going to take them to national cabinet on Wednesday. Of course
01:29there's already been some pushback from the Northern Territory and Queensland but he's going to speak about
01:34these standards at this dinner that you mentioned in front of business leaders tonight and he's giving
01:39some more detail about locations, sort of talking about some inappropriate locations where data centres
01:46won't allow, won't be allowed to be built. He mentions schools, he mentions near homes,
01:53prime agricultural land and also land that could be used for housing development. So some further details
02:01there from these standards that the Prime Minister wants to legislate. Of course it's also to do with
02:08energy and water consumption. He wants these data centres to be generating more power through new
02:14renewable supply than they're actually taking because he doesn't want sort of demand to grow
02:20and then it to push up prices. But that pushback I was talking about from Queensland for instance is
02:26while the Prime Minister wants this to be renewable energy powering these data centres, Queensland is saying
02:33well it could be renewable, it could be fossil fuels, it shouldn't really matter. So it's going to be
02:38a bit of a spicy national cabinet that we're expecting tomorrow, Kath.
