00:00but we should start by thanking the great people over at monumental sports
00:04who had us out to the freedom 250 i'm going to hear all about it i went much later in
00:10the day
00:10cakes and eb went early yeah i think i arrived around 4 30 to be honest with you it was
00:16wrapping
00:17up it was pretty much over wasn't it uh saturday and they were doing qualifying okay believe me
00:22i heard a lot of loud cars and i saw them zipping by sure that's all you needed to see
00:28and i had
00:28shrimp cocktail i mean we had a great vantage point we were just set up directly across from the u
00:33.s
00:33capital like at the start slash finish line it was a like the the views and the vantage point was
00:41amazing it's pretty surreal you know you get there and you just you don't expect to see you know like
00:47indy cars racing down whatever road that was constitution avenue whatever the heck that was
00:51independence avenue i don't even know what road that was i should know that but i didn't know it
00:55it's just wild uh it would have the capital right there in the background i mean primo uh
01:00sweets there that monumental had and they were nice enough to invite us out yeah and everybody that was
01:06there you can't help it i don't care you have to take a picture in front of that because it's
01:11just an
01:12iconic scene yeah i sent a text to you guys though it was planes trains and automobiles at least for
01:17me
01:17yeah um i asked because you guys were going in the morning we had a soccer game out ashburn came
01:23back
01:23home for a bit and then went back out and i was wondering what was going on like what was
01:28the
01:28best route and eb said it's a disaster took an uber i didn't know that you guys took an uber
01:33together because cakes never responded well so my buddy lucas was here and valdez and i and lucas we
01:39played out at hidden creek on friday that was a blast i should mention that we can maybe talk about
01:43it
01:43later but that was that was a lot of fun um but then so lucas i had to fly in
01:48because he's a big
01:49f1 guy and i said i know you're into racing i mean he literally gets up every morning and what
01:54you know on the weekends watches it um he's not an indy car guy but he's a race guy says
01:59yeah sure
01:59i'll come up and so uh we came up here and i wanted to give him a tour of the
02:04radio station he'd been to
02:05dc a few times but i hadn't given him a tour yet so i'm giving a tour and then cakes
02:08is here with
02:09the sun giving brendan a tour because brendan hadn't been up here in a while if any times he'd been
02:13in the lobby for whatever reason never came up and saw the studio so i was like oh perfect it
02:18was
02:18like 10 o'clock something like that 10 30 something ish and he was gonna walk or or train i
02:25said
02:25considering it but there was a 30 minute walk oh yeah i was like you know what that's just too
02:29much
02:29i think the walk was i looked it up was like 1.8 miles right which is a healthy walk
02:35hey good for
02:35your walk definitely good for your dick you know we didn't know about the rain it was still dicey
02:40ended up holding out being perfect like it worked out for us i think i'm sure it did for you
02:43two in
02:44the afternoon um we took an uber and we had dina i had dina and lucas up late last the
02:50night before
02:50look at plotting on maps where we want to be what's closest to our thing and we still had an
02:57uber take
02:57us to where we thought would be close and we still struggled navigating it wasn't that close he dropped
03:03us off somewhere right then maybe he didn't drop us off where we asked i don't know it was not
03:07close
03:08we started walking the wrong direction then we figured out we had to double back yeah head towards
03:13the spot eventually we were set up it wasn't i'll say this it was a very cool event there were
03:18a lot
03:18of people that it wasn't signed well if that makes any sense like there wasn't like you know i understand
03:23it's a it's there for three days but they should have temporary signs somewhere they had a lot of
03:27volunteers you helped me out because you said just ask the volunteers but that said when i was driving
03:32here i punched up an article on nbc4 news and it was all about where to park or where to
03:39be and it
03:40said that if you're going through gate five to take the metro to la font plaza and i was like
03:48all right
03:48i'll just park here well we told our driver take the metro take us to the metro stop by that
03:53metro stop
03:54he told the uber guy because i don't want to get i didn't want to deal with the metro just
03:57drive to
03:58that metro stop i'm not sure he did no i don't think he did i don't think yeah because if
04:01you're right
04:02at that la font plaza basically you could smell the rubber right when you got off the metro we
04:06can hear i can hear everything and then where there was a volunteer right outside no idea jason
04:13you know he was like is this good and we're like yeah sure whatever i think he dropped us off
04:17near
04:17like the department of agriculture so you had no idea really where you were i don't even know where we
04:22were and then you know i've said this a million times you know when you get your ways out to
04:26for
04:26walking and it's the same thing i always deal with this in airports because you're like all right how do
04:31i get
04:32out of this airport i got to go to watch that field or whatever you put it in and it
04:36takes a
04:36second to get its bearings you know how it's going a million different directions yeah so that happened
04:40when we were walking we're walking right go this way go this way it was a cluster for us trying
04:46to
04:46find it be honest you just try and listen to the cars zooming by so and we needed to be
04:55near gate
04:56which is closest to where we wanted to be it's an interesting viewing experience yeah i don't know
05:02anything about racing and i brought my daughter and she brought one of her teammates yeah after i'll be
05:08honest after 10 minutes of watching everybody was bored and it was already closing in on six o'clock
05:14because we got there right when some race finished yeah so we so we're there the race finishes and then
05:21they're clearing the track and they're they're setting up for the next race which was like an
05:26hour later funniest thing but all the people that are just sitting in a spot yeah it's kind of
05:31fascinating to me now they're race fans so they love it but i i don't really because you don't know
05:36what's going on really i found what my buddy does could no less who watches f1 he was not only
05:42just
05:42watching this he was watching the tvs they had out there yeah so you could see the whole thing
05:46develop so you don't just watch the zoom zoom zoom you got to watch were the drivers for the races
05:51the the pre-qualifying races the iROC races were they the same drivers that were in the freedom 250
05:57because they were different those were the like stud names that you knew like jeff gordon rusty wallace
06:02was was racing oh really one of the ray halls i'm not sure which one it was almost like a
06:07legend
06:07like helio castroneve something was in one of the cars so they were different they were in the
06:13earlier cars the cars that didn't go as fast by the way where we were and and my but lucas
06:19was
06:19telling me is because we were coming off a turn our straightaway was like a short straightaway
06:24they weren't hitting top speed in front of us even though it was a straightaway because it was
06:27coming off the turn and those iROC cars i tell cakes they look like lawnmowers compared to the
06:32indy cars yeah they look stuck in the mud stuck in the mud i saw the indy cars i think
06:37we did i saw
06:38a qualifying indy cars were flying but still it wasn't still top top top speed i saw them get to
06:45like 140 or what they're saying they were well because there was a tv inside the suite that's
06:50what it said i didn't even know you could see the inside of a car and it was yeah they
06:53were getting
06:53up to they were getting up to yesterday when i was watching them get up about 165 so when we
06:58check
06:59in on the straightaway we gave them our name at the desk when we check in and the woman after
07:04i give
07:05her my name and my son's name she's like do you want the radio so you can listen in like
07:09to the
07:10to the pit or the team and i was like cool i was like thank you for the offer but
07:14no because i i mean
07:16i would just look like the world's biggest poser turned it down to just be like i don't even know
07:20what i'm listening to but it probably would have made our experience better it may it may have
07:24probably would have i turned it down i did not turn down the earplugs i did you guys put in
07:29the
07:29earplugs i put in the orange earplugs i'm all man oh man i'm good for you yeah you're really
07:35i already have uh damaged hearing so what was that really it was so is that gonna make it even
07:40worse
07:41i'm sure i'm sure it was and it's it's and it was a high pitch at least for the races
07:46that i was
07:48yeah yeah but it was it was fun to experience it was fun to watch it was good food yeah
07:52because
07:52you've never seen that before i'll be honest with you three quarters the reason why i went is as i
07:55probably gonna be pretty good for you so it was always what was on the menu cakes you can
08:00describe it there was shrimp cocktail i didn't see shrimp cocktail when we were there that might
08:05have been a later in the day were they uh colossal shrimp they weren't nubs tiny shrimp pretty big
08:10shrimp there were there was like a there was salmon like bean salad salmon grilled chicken and there
08:17was also some sort of roast beef with like a chimichurri sauce oh so you were there lunchtime it was
08:21definitely different yeah for me it was the shrimp and like a mar charcuterie boards yeah uh fruit
08:28yeah and nice that you would have been sized nice cookies cookies brownies a lot of little dessert so
08:35how long were you there total you think a couple hours uh i probably stayed until two one thirty
08:42two maybe i left shortly after cakes i'd say we were there probably two-ish hours two and a half
08:46hours
08:47and getting getting home was okay we walked we were like screw all this we walked back we ended up
08:53walking the station it was fine okay but uh because we did the uber was a disappointment yeah we didn't
08:59know where to go we're like let's walk somewhere and get an uber like you know what's only we're
09:03looking at our thing it's only another half a mile yeah let's just keep walking yeah yeah um
09:07i took my first metro ride i think in like a decade yeah somebody told me couldn't have been easier
09:12it was your son that told me that you don't even need metro card anymore you could just use your
09:16correct your credit card credit card just right there your apple pay or whatever well i looked
09:21i don't know if it was on tv on saturday i don't think it was with the qualifying stuff i
09:26don't think
09:26the qualifying was on tv but it was always definitely was oh yeah i was watching it was on like
09:30a speed
09:30channel or something i mean danica patrick was out there and i didn't see her um she was on the
09:36she was on the like the pre-race set uh-huh with the capital in the back no no it
09:41was a spectacular
09:42setting yeah and even though i don't really understand racing i'm thankful that i went
09:47because it is one of those experiences that i'll have lodged in my memory i'll always remember
09:51yeah it was just very cool very surreal experience thank you to monumental jim ben so it was great
09:56i'm sure he's always a great host he was like couldn't let me know if you want to come back
09:59tomorrow
10:00i mean he said the same thing to me i was like such a nice guy it's like i think
10:04i have soccer
10:06well it was cool to watch because uh you know of course it's never been here before so and all
10:11the
10:11flyovers were awesome and the actual race was pretty cool i mean i don't know there was probably
10:16when i was watching five or six accidents but one guy was in second with about 20 laps to go
10:21and he
10:22tried to pass the guy the leader and he was going too fast hit the wall and pummeled the tire
10:26he was
10:27done he was out of the race we sleep on kyle kirkwood who won the event kirkwood sleep on him
10:32he's definitely sleep he's from jupiter florida i'm not sure i know that are any of the indy drivers
10:37like sort of famous like to the general public not really i'd have to see a list of their names
10:42to
10:42figure it out so that i don't know i'm gonna guess i haven't heard of any of them i'm gonna
10:46guess
10:46you know some of the f1 names probably not many of the indy car names right but mario andretti is
10:54mario andretti is the team owner yeah i know that name and he came in i believe andretti
11:00racers were three of the top four nice including the winner so he killed it yeah that was very cool
11:07there were a lot of people out there a lot of people just in the lawn area just watching the
11:11big tvs all the sponsors and the weather ended up being good the weather ended up being just fine
11:17we got lucky no problem so thank you to monumental sports for having us out and like a just a
11:21random
11:22tire didn't hop over the fence and kill us which is great let me tell you something that thought
11:27never left my mind the back of my mind the entire time i was there you were going over those
11:31little
11:31bridges no right over the race sitting there sitting out front right by the finish line i was
11:37like watch out for flying tires destination movie where that happens i haven't seen that where
11:43that's the opening scene so what do they because there were so many you know tire marks on the
11:48streets yeah yeah do they clean the streets what do they do they repave them i don't have any idea
11:53i don't know you know what they did call me your bowser ask her chill bell mayor bowser said
11:58racers to your cars did you see that that's all she said she didn't do the start your engines no
12:03no she said to your cars and then that's what she was somebody else said start your engine someone
12:07else said start your okay yeah she got a note card i'm sure she got a note card i mean
12:11she was
12:12supposed to say that but i had never heard someone announce to your cars never heard that either i figured
12:18they were already at their cars i mean the race was like it's a good bit three minutes away
12:22jason says that to himself at 954 every day yeah yeah yeah jason to your car get your ass to
