00:02Daryl Tampon, who was the General Manager of ALZAB Stud, was awarded the TBA Stud Employee of the Year Award
00:07in July.
00:09Daryl has certainly made his own way in the industry having had no ties in his formative years.
00:13A chance stint in America set him on a course that now sees him as integral to the success of
00:19ALZAB Stud.
00:20His passion shines through in this TDN interview.
00:24In school, I was in the Air Training Corps and I worked my way up to staff, but obviously it's
00:33very expensive to train something like that.
00:34So I've said, this is a six week induction thing.
00:38I passed that and they said, oh, our next training session is in six months.
00:43So I was like, what am I going to do for six months?
00:45My sister was working on the stud farm in Florida.
00:48She said, come over here.
00:50I remember three weeks in, I was like, this is, I love this.
00:54You know, my first foaling and, you know, working with the mayors.
00:58I was like, yeah, this is what I want to do.
01:00So I emailed the RAF and said, this is what I, you know, I'm not going to come.
01:04Yeah. Then I come back and done the MBQ course and then got placement for Miss Stanley at what was
01:10then Stanley House was Woodlands.
01:12Um, and, um, yeah, that's when I, that's how I started off.
01:15I remember two years in, I said to him, I want to go to America.
01:18And he said, um, I'll give you another year and I'll get you a job out there and I'll pay
01:22for you visa and flights.
01:24He got me a job at Lane's End.
01:26Um, and you know, that sort of set me on the sort of management front because I got there and
01:31they're like, here's your barn.
01:33Uh, here's your 30 male foal barn.
01:36I just remember first seven foals that come in, uh, three Danzigs, um, and, um, all form caps.
01:44And I was like, okay, this is the big leagues now.
01:48I'm general manager here at A to B.
01:50And, um, I ended up just going on careers and racing.
01:53So I'll be looking for a second person here.
01:55So I was like, oh, never heard of the place actually.
01:57So I thought, uh, apply for that.
02:00And I've been here quite a short time and they ended up getting rid of the manager at the time
02:05and, and put me in the role.
02:06And then I had a meeting with Fauzi and he told me what his plans were and what he wants
02:10to do with the place.
02:11You know, and then the package was quite good.
02:13And actually I met my fiance who was the vet here, um, at the time.
02:18So it's sort of like, oh, why am I going to stay?
02:21Um, obviously I was done manager at the start.
02:23And then they, um, Fauzi put me up to general manager two years ago.
02:26So it's sort of the, you know, obviously we're having to stay.
02:29We're having to stay up from Oliver as well, but, you know, sort of overseeing more, overseeing the whole operation
02:33rather than just a section of it.

02:40They said, I think they said it was like 50 odd people got entered for it.
02:43And then they got down to the last six.
02:44I was like, when I got into the last six, I was like, I'm really chuffed with that.
02:47You know?
02:48Yeah. Then I was lucky to win.
02:49And I was sort of the list of the other people and I was like, oh, this is, you know,
02:53it's very humbling.
02:54It's a great award and it's great to be recognized by your peers.
02:58It's great.
02:58I had my, um, my sister, um, Fionne, who, um, she's the staff manager at, um, at Drummond.
03:04So it was nice.
03:05So my dad come down from Wales, uh, and my partner, Rebecca was there.
03:08So it was, it was special.
03:09Yeah. It was really nice.
