WE FOUND TROY. WE NEVER FOUND THE WAR.

This is the story of the most famous city that may never have existed — and the patient, stubborn ground that can neither prove it nor let it go.

◈ Nine cities stacked inside a single hill, one of them burned to the ground
◈ A real Bronze Age city, written in an empire's clay, ruled by a king whose name was almost Alexander
◈ A wooden horse the earth can never find — and can never disprove

The deeper they dug, the less certain the legend became. And somehow, the more real.

This is not a retelling of the Trojan War. It is a slow descent through the layers of a real hill on the Anatolian coast, the mound of Hisarlik above the Aegean, into the place where history and legend quietly refuse to become the same thing.

History told with space to breathe.

00:00:00A gold came up out of the dark in a man's fist, and for a long moment, he forgot to
00:00:06breathe.
00:00:07It had not touched light in longer than he could let himself imagine.
00:00:11Fine, pale earth still clung to it, the dust of a floor that had been swept by living hands when
00:00:18the world was impossibly young.
00:00:20His knuckles were raw, his lamp unsteady in the other hand.
00:00:24He had been tearing into this hill for years
00:00:27Moving a small mountain of soil
00:00:30With the certainty of a man
00:00:32Who already knew what waited at the bottom of it
00:00:34And now, in his open palm
00:00:37Lay the proof
00:00:38The trench around him
00:00:41Dropped through the body of the hill
00:00:42Like an old wound reopened
00:00:44Above his head
00:00:46Band after band of packed earth
00:00:49And broken stone
00:00:50Climbed back toward the dry Anatolian light
00:00:53Each layer a slightly different colour
00:00:56Each colour a different age of the world
00:00:59He had cut straight down through all of them
00:01:02Fast
00:01:02The way an impatient man opens a letter
00:01:05He has waited his whole life to read
00:01:08Because there was a poem in his head
00:01:10The oldest story his world had ever told
00:01:13And he had spent everything he had to prove
00:01:16It was more than a story
00:01:18He believed he was holding the treasure of a king
00:01:22Soon he would carry it up into the lamplight
00:01:25Or give it a name
00:01:26The name of a ruler from that ancient song
00:01:29A king whose city was said to have burned
00:01:32At the end of a long and terrible war
00:01:35He would call this
00:01:36The gold of that fallen king
00:01:38And the claim would race across the world
00:01:41And make him famous
00:01:42He was certain of it
00:01:44He was also wrong
00:01:46In a way the earth pressed close around him
00:01:49Could have told him
00:01:50If earth had any reason to speak
00:01:53The hands that had hammered this gold into shape
00:01:56Were dust more than a thousand years
00:01:58Before the war he was chasing
00:02:00Was ever sung by anyone
00:02:02The city that made it
00:02:04Had already risen
00:02:05And fallen
00:02:06And been forgotten
00:02:07And been built over by strangers
00:02:10Long before the king
00:02:11He wanted to name it for
00:02:13Was even dreamed into a poem
00:02:16The people who once wore it
00:02:17Had never heard that king's name
00:02:19They had never heard the poet's name either
00:02:23Their own names had been gone so long
00:02:25That the earth had stopped keeping them
00:02:28This was the quiet trap the hill had laid
00:02:31Without ever meaning to
00:02:33The man had dug downward
00:02:35In search of the city from the story
00:02:37And that city lay somewhere in the middle of the mound
00:02:40In a layer he had already passed through
00:02:43Without slowing down
00:02:45To reach this older gold
00:02:47He had gone too far
00:02:49He had driven his trench
00:02:51Straight through the very city he came to find
00:02:53And kept going
00:02:54Down into a deeper
00:02:56And far more ancient silence beneath it
00:02:59So the gold was real
00:03:01The hill was real
00:03:03And somewhere in this same earth
00:03:06A fire
00:03:07And a fall
00:03:08Like the ones the poem described
00:03:10Were real too
00:03:11Only the story he was already wrapping around
00:03:14The treasure in his hands
00:03:15Belonged to a different city
00:03:17A thousand years
00:03:19And many floors away
00:03:20And above the place where he knelt
00:03:23Still sealed in the dark
00:03:25Still untouched by any spade
00:03:27Lay the city he had actually come looking for
00:03:30Holding its silence
00:03:32Waiting for someone
00:03:34Who had not yet learned
00:03:35How to listen to the ground
00:03:38From a distance
00:03:39It was almost nothing
00:03:41A low brown rise
00:03:43At the edge of a wide flat plain
00:03:45Lifted just high enough
00:03:47To catch the wind
00:03:48That came in off the water
00:03:50Grass grew over it
00:03:51In the wet months
00:03:52And burned gold
00:03:54In the dry ones
00:03:55Goats crossed it
00:03:57And a worn track
00:03:58Ran over one shoulder
00:03:59And down the other
00:04:00The way tracks do
00:04:02Taking the easiest line across
00:04:05For anyone walking the plain below
00:04:07It was simply the hill
00:04:09That had always been there
00:04:10Too ordinary to be worth a second look
00:04:13And for thousands of years
00:04:15That is more or less
00:04:17What people did with it
00:04:19They grazed their animals
00:04:20Across its slopes
00:04:21And built low houses on its top
00:04:24And pulled them down again
00:04:25They were born on it
00:04:27And buried near it
00:04:28And died never once
00:04:30Suspecting what they were standing on
00:04:32Whole lifetimes passed
00:04:34On the surface of that hill
00:04:35And not one of them
00:04:37Knew that the ground beneath their feet
00:04:39Was not ground at all
00:04:42To understand the hill
00:04:43You have to look past it
00:04:45To the water
00:04:47Just beyond the plain
00:04:48Lay the mouth of a narrow strait
00:04:50A long blue corridor of sea
00:04:53That was the only gate
00:04:54Between the Aegean
00:04:55And the waters
00:04:56That ran north
00:04:57Toward the Black Sea
00:05:00Every ship that wanted to pass
00:05:02From one world into the other
00:05:03Had to thread that needle
00:05:05And the strait
00:05:06Did not let them through easily
00:05:08Because the current
00:05:09Runs hard out of it
00:05:11And for much of the year
00:05:12The wind runs hard
00:05:14Against anything
00:05:15Trying to push up into it
00:05:17So the ships waited
00:05:19They gathered on the shore
00:05:21Below the hill
00:05:21Sometimes for days
00:05:23Sometimes for weeks
00:05:24Until the weather turned
00:05:26And let them north
00:05:28Whoever held the hill
00:05:29Held that waiting
00:05:31They held the shelter
00:05:33Where the ships sat out the wind
00:05:34The trade that moved through them
00:05:37The toll that could be asked
00:05:39Of anyone who wanted to pass
00:05:41A town in that spot
00:05:43Did not have to be large
00:05:44To be rich
00:05:45And it did not have to do much
00:05:47But sit there
00:05:48And watch the sea
00:05:49That is why
00:05:51Every time the place was destroyed
00:05:53Someone came back
00:05:55And built it again
00:05:56The position was worth too much
00:05:58To leave empty for long
00:06:01The people of the nearest village
00:06:03Had a name for the rise
00:06:05They called it
00:06:06He-sa-look
00:06:07Which meant more or less
00:06:09The place of the fortress
00:06:11Though by their time
00:06:13There was no fortress to see
00:06:15Only the bare hill
00:06:17The name was closer to the truth
00:06:19Than they knew
00:06:20Because a mound like this one
00:06:22Is not made by nature
00:06:23Nature does not stack earth
00:06:26In such even, patient, horizontal bands
00:06:30This kind of hill
00:06:31Is made by people
00:06:33And it is made mostly of their houses
00:06:36The walls here were mudbrick
00:06:38Set on footings of stone
00:06:40And mudbrick does not last
00:06:43When a house failed
00:06:45Or a whole quarter burned
00:06:47The brick slumped back
00:06:49Into the earth it came from
00:06:50The rubble was beaten flat
00:06:52And the next builders
00:06:54Simply raised their floors
00:06:55On top of it
00:06:56Every turn of ruin and return
00:06:59Lifted the ground a little higher
00:07:01Do that for century after century
00:07:04And the dead town
00:07:06Becomes the foundation
00:07:07Of the living one
00:07:08The new wall
00:07:10Traces the buried line
00:07:11Of the old wall
00:07:12The new hearth
00:07:14Settles into the cold ash
00:07:16Of an older fire
00:07:17And between each city
00:07:19And the next
00:07:20The earth keeps a thin
00:07:22Dark line
00:07:23A seam where one age
00:07:25Of the place ended
00:07:25And another began
00:07:27Sealed under the weight
00:07:29Of everything that came after
00:07:31The hill kept them
00:07:32All the same way
00:07:34With the same patience
00:07:35The famous and the forgotten
00:07:37Pressed together
00:07:38Without distinction
00:07:40It did not know
00:07:41Which of its cities
00:07:43Had mattered
00:07:44It did not know
00:07:45That any of them
00:07:46Had mattered
00:07:47It only held them
00:07:48Floor beneath floor
00:07:50In the dark
00:07:51The way the ground holds
00:07:53Whatever is laid into it
00:07:55And asked to keep
00:07:57And there was far more of it
00:07:59Than anyone first imagined
00:08:01When men finally cut into the mound
00:08:04And read it from the top down
00:08:05They did not find one buried town
00:08:08Or two
00:08:09They found nine
00:08:11Stacked one on top of the other
00:08:13Going down through more than
00:08:14Two thousand years of building and burning
00:08:17And building again
00:08:18The deepest of them
00:08:20The first city at the bottom of everything
00:08:23Had laid its first stones
00:08:25Before the great pyramid
00:08:27Was ever raised in Egypt
00:08:29Nine separate worlds
00:08:31Nine rings of wall
00:08:33Nine peoples who had each believed
00:08:35In their own time
00:08:37That theirs was the city
00:08:39That would stand forever
00:08:41Every one of them was wrong
00:08:43And above all nine
00:08:45Out in the world of the living
00:08:47Almost nothing of them was left
00:08:50No one remembered the names of the people
00:08:53Who had raised these walls
00:08:54Or which king had ruled which layer
00:08:57Or which fire had ended which age
00:09:00The hill had swallowed all of it
00:09:02What survived up in the daylight
00:09:04Was not a memory at all
00:09:07It was a song
00:09:08A single story carried for almost
00:09:11Three thousand years
00:09:12About one city
00:09:14One war
00:09:15And one terrible summer
00:09:17When the whole world
00:09:18Seemed to arrive at its walls
00:09:20One city
00:09:22Out of the nine
00:09:23The hill was quietly holding
00:09:25And no one yet alive
00:09:28Could say for certain
00:09:29Whether that city
00:09:31Had ever really been there at all
00:09:34It always began with a woman
00:09:36And a ship
00:09:37And a crossing
00:09:38That should never have been made
00:09:39A queen named Helen
00:09:42Carried away over the sea
00:09:43From a husband
00:09:44Who would not let her go
00:09:46A thousand vessels
00:09:48Launched to bring her back
00:09:49A city on a far shore
00:09:51Shut behind its walls
00:09:53Waiting out a war
00:09:55It could not win
00:09:56That was the shape of it
00:09:58And for three thousand years
00:10:00It was told and retold
00:10:02In almost exactly that shape
00:10:04In firelight
00:10:05In the dark
00:10:06By voices that had learnt it
00:10:09From older voices
00:10:10Long since gone
00:10:12No one knew anymore
00:10:13Who had told it first
00:10:15It had passed from mouth to mouth
00:10:18For centuries
00:10:19Before anyone thought
00:10:20To write it down
00:10:21Each singer holding
00:10:23The same bones of the story
00:10:24And adding his own breath to them
00:10:27Then somewhere near the edge of memory
00:10:30A poet gathered it up
00:10:32And fixed it in lines
00:10:33That did not change
00:10:34We call him Homer
00:10:36Though we know almost nothing about him
00:10:39Not where he lived
00:10:40Not whether he was one man or many
00:10:43Not even whether he could see
00:10:46What he left behind
00:10:47Outlived everything around it
00:10:50And it did not stay a story
00:10:52Told by firelight
00:10:53It became the first great poem
00:10:56Of the western world
00:10:57The thing the young learned
00:10:59Before they learned
00:11:00Almost anything else
00:11:02Kings traced their bloodlines
00:11:04Back to its heroes
00:11:06Empires claimed descent
00:11:08From the survivors
00:11:09Of that burning city
00:11:10As if to come from it
00:11:12Were a kind of nobility
00:11:14For most of three thousand years
00:11:16The people who carried the story
00:11:19Did not doubt it
00:11:20The war had happened
00:11:22The city had stood
00:11:23The walls had come down
00:11:25And all of it sat in their minds
00:11:27As solid as anything
00:11:29They could put a hand to
00:11:30But there was a problem
00:11:32Underneath the certainty
00:11:34And it never went away
00:11:35There was no proof
00:11:37Not a stone
00:11:39Not a wall
00:11:40Not a single object
00:11:42Anyone could point to and say
00:11:43This stood inside those gates
00:11:46Everything rested on the poem
00:11:48And the poem was the only thing
00:11:50That said any of it
00:11:51Had been real
00:11:53A story can carry
00:11:55An enormous amount of weight
00:11:56For a very long time
00:11:58On nothing but its own beauty
00:12:01But weight is not the same thing
00:12:03As ground
00:12:04And so slowly
00:12:06The learned world
00:12:07Began to let go of it
00:12:09As the centuries turned
00:12:11And people grew more careful
00:12:13About the difference
00:12:14Between what they wished were true
00:12:16And what they could actually show
00:12:18The war on the far shore
00:12:20Drifted out of history
00:12:21And into legend
00:12:23Scholars decided the city
00:12:25Had never existed
00:12:26The poem was a masterpiece
00:12:28They said
00:12:29But a masterpiece about nothing
00:12:31A magnificent invention
00:12:34With no place on any map
00:12:36By the time our own story reaches it
00:12:39The educated opinion was settled
00:12:41There had been no queen
00:12:43No thousand ships
00:12:45No burning towers
00:12:46There had only ever been a poet
00:12:49And a song
00:12:50But a song is a strange kind of nothing
00:12:54Because woven through all its grief
00:12:57And its gods
00:12:57And its impossible heroes
00:12:59Were other things
00:13:00Smaller things
00:13:01That did not feel invented
00:13:03A landscape described as if someone
00:13:06Had once stood in it
00:13:08A plain between two rivers
00:13:10A bay where ships could be hauled up
00:13:12Onto the sand
00:13:13A windy ridge above the water
00:13:16With a city set on its crown
00:13:19The poem gave directions
00:13:21And there were a handful of stubborn people
00:13:24Scattered thinly across the centuries
00:13:26Who could not shake the feeling
00:13:28That those directions
00:13:30Led somewhere a person
00:13:32Could actually walk
00:13:33It was a heretical thought
00:13:36And an old one
00:13:37And almost everyone who held it
00:13:39Was dismissed as a dreamer
00:13:41What if the poem was not only a poem
00:13:44What if
00:13:45Folded inside the most famous fiction in the world
00:13:49There were real instructions
00:13:51Pointing at a real place
00:13:53That still stood somewhere on a real coast
00:13:55Waiting under the grass
00:13:57Most people who entertained that question
00:14:00Did nothing with it
00:14:01It was the kind of idea
00:14:03You turned over once
00:14:05And set carefully back down
00:14:07Because chasing it
00:14:09Was a good way to ruin a life
00:14:11But not everyone set it down
00:14:14Somewhere
00:14:15While the scholars were busy proving
00:14:17That the city had never been real
00:14:19A few people had quietly begun
00:14:21To read the poem
00:14:22The other way round
00:14:24Not as a story
00:14:25That happened to mention a coastline
00:14:27But as a coastline
00:14:29That happened to arrive
00:14:30Wrapped in a story
00:14:32They were going to take the oldest legend
00:14:34In the western world
00:14:36And treat it as a map
00:14:37And one of them
00:14:39In the end
00:14:40Was going to choose a hill
00:14:43The man who first understood the hill
00:14:45Was not a famous man
00:14:47And he never became one
00:14:49He lived nearby
00:14:51On that same coast
00:14:52The son of a family
00:14:54That had settled there
00:14:55Among the consulates
00:14:56And the trading houses
00:14:57Of the strait
00:14:59He was quiet
00:15:00Careful
00:15:00And a little obsessive
00:15:02The kind of man
00:15:04Who reads the old texts closely
00:15:05And then goes outside
00:15:07To see whether the ground
00:15:08Agrees with them
00:15:09His name was Frank Calvert
00:15:11And for a long time
00:15:13He was the only person
00:15:15Of any standing
00:15:15Who looked at that ordinary mound
00:15:17And saw a city in it
00:15:19He had done the unglamorous work
00:15:22He owned a piece of the hill outright
00:15:25Bought with his own money
00:15:27And he had put his own small trenches into it
00:15:30Season after season
00:15:31With no fanfare
00:15:33And almost no funds
00:15:34He had handled the broken pottery
00:15:37That came up
00:15:38And read the layers
00:15:39And set them against the lines of the poem
00:15:42And the few other ancient accounts
00:15:44That still survived
00:15:45And he had arrived
00:15:46Patiently and almost alone
00:15:49At the conclusion
00:15:50The learned world
00:15:51Had thrown out a century before
00:15:54This was the place
00:15:56The city in the song
00:15:58Had been real
00:15:59And it was here
00:16:00Under his feet
00:16:01Under the grass
00:16:02But knowing a thing
00:16:05And proving it to the world
00:16:06Are two different powers
00:16:07And he had only the first
00:16:09To convince anyone
00:16:11You had to tear the whole hill open
00:16:14And that took money
00:16:16He did not have
00:16:17And a name loud enough
00:16:18To make people listen
00:16:20Calvert had neither
00:16:22He was a careful provincial scholar
00:16:24In a forgotten corner of the map
00:16:26And careful provincial scholars
00:16:29Do not move the world
00:16:30However right they happen to be
00:16:33And then one day
00:16:35A visitor came
00:16:36A wealthy foreigner
00:16:38Restless
00:16:39Self-made
00:16:40Hungry for something larger
00:16:42Than the fortune
00:16:43He had already built
00:16:44A man who had loved
00:16:46The old poem
00:16:47Since boyhood
00:16:48And had decided
00:16:49Late in life
00:16:51To go and find
00:16:52The city inside it
00:16:53He had been searching
00:16:55The wrong ground
00:16:56Digging at another hill
00:16:57Some distance away
00:16:59Certain the city lay there
00:17:01He was tireless
00:17:03And confident
00:17:04And almost completely mistaken
00:17:06About where to look
00:17:07It was Calvert
00:17:09Who set him right
00:17:11The quiet man
00:17:12Opened his notes
00:17:13To the loud one
00:17:14Showed him the mound
00:17:15Told him plainly
00:17:17That this was the hill
00:17:18That the other site
00:17:20Was a dead end
00:17:21That everything he was chasing
00:17:23Had been waiting here
00:17:25All along
00:17:26He handed over years
00:17:28Of his own patient work
00:17:29Freely
00:17:30Because he wanted the city
00:17:32Found more than he wanted
00:17:34The credit for finding it
00:17:35He had the truth
00:17:37The visitor had the money
00:17:39And between the two of them
00:17:41The city was finally going to come up
00:17:44Out of the ground
00:17:45I never know where you are
00:17:47When these stories reach you
00:17:50Whether it is late
00:17:51Where you're listening
00:17:52The house gone quiet around you
00:17:54Or whether it is the middle
00:17:56Of an ordinary day
00:17:57And this is just a voice in your ear
00:18:00While everything else carries on
00:18:02Wherever you are
00:18:03And whatever the hour is there
00:18:05Let me ask you one small thing
00:18:07Because it matters far more than it sounds
00:18:10If you can

00:18:17On Apple Podcasts
00:18:19Or on whatever player
00:18:20Happens to be carrying my voice
00:18:22To you right now
00:18:23It costs you nothing at all
00:18:25And it helps this quiet work
00:18:28More than I can easily put into words
00:18:31A single follow
00:18:32Is the one thing
00:18:33That keeps these stories
00:18:35Finding the people
00:18:36Who are looking for them
00:18:37And now we go back to the hill
00:18:39Where the quiet man
00:18:40Has just handed
00:18:41A stranger discovery
00:18:43Of a lifetime
00:18:44The digging that followed
00:18:46Was enormous
00:18:47And it made the visitor
00:18:49Famous across the entire world
00:18:52His name went into
00:18:53Every newspaper
00:18:54And every history book
00:18:56He became the man
00:18:57The man who found the city
00:18:58In the poem
00:18:59The one who had proven
00:19:01The doubters wrong
00:19:02And the story he told
00:19:04About himself
00:19:04Left almost no room in it
00:19:06For anyone else
00:19:08Carvert's part shrank
00:19:10Year by year
00:19:11In the telling
00:19:13The owner of the hill
00:19:14The man who had pointed the way
00:19:16Became a footnote
00:19:17And then something less than a footnote
00:19:21And so the hill
00:19:22Gave up its secret to history
00:19:24Under the wrong name
00:19:25The discovery
00:19:27Kept the man who was loudest
00:19:29At the moment of finding
00:19:30And not the one
00:19:31Who had been right the longest
00:19:33The truth about that mound
00:19:35Had belonged first
00:19:37To a careful and unglamorous man
00:19:39Who would die without the world
00:19:41Ever quite understanding
00:19:42What he had done
00:19:43And the man who took the glory
00:19:46Was about to do something
00:19:47To the hill
00:19:48That no one
00:19:49Least of all Calvert
00:19:51Could have stopped
00:19:52He was in a terrible hurry
00:19:55And the hill
00:19:56Had waited 5,000 years
00:19:57For exactly the wrong kind of man
00:20:02He came at the hill
00:20:03The way a man comes
00:20:04At a locked door
00:20:05He has waited his whole life
00:20:07To open
00:20:08With force
00:20:09And with almost no patience
00:20:11Left in him
00:20:12His name was
00:20:13Cess H. L. E. Munn
00:20:15And he had not come
00:20:16To study the mound
00:20:17Or to read it slowly
00:20:19Or to coax it open
00:20:21Over careful seasons
00:20:22The way the quiet man
00:20:23Before him had
00:20:25He wanted the city
00:20:26Of the poem
00:20:27He wanted it whole
00:20:28And he wanted it now
00:20:30The hill was simply
00:20:32In the way
00:20:33So he opened the mound
00:20:34Like a surgeon in a hurry
00:20:36With a hundred men and more
00:20:38He drove an enormous trench
00:20:40Straight into the flank
00:20:42Of the hill
00:20:42And down through the heart of it
00:20:44A gash wide enough
00:20:46To swallow houses
00:20:47Cutting clean through
00:20:49Everything in its path
00:20:50He was not looking
00:20:52For the layers
00:20:53To him
00:20:54The layers were only dirt
00:20:55Standing
00:20:56Between him and the bottom
00:20:58Where he was certain
00:20:59The oldest and the greatest city
00:21:01The city of kings
00:21:03Would be waiting
00:21:04So down he went
00:21:06Fast
00:21:07Throwing centuries
00:21:08Over his shoulder
00:21:09And this is the part
00:21:12That still aches
00:21:13More than a century later
00:21:16The city he was looking for
00:21:18Was not at the bottom
00:21:20The city from the poem
00:21:22If it stood anywhere
00:21:24In that hill
00:21:24Lay in the upper middle of it
00:21:26A few floors down
00:21:28From the daylight
00:21:29Exactly where a great walled town
00:21:31From the age of the song
00:21:33Would sit
00:21:33But he did not slow down
00:21:35When he reached it
00:21:37He tore straight through it
00:21:39On his way to the depths
00:21:40Mistaking it for rubble
00:21:42Hauling it out
00:21:43And dumping it aside
00:21:45Hunting for something
00:21:46Grander underneath
00:21:48What he found far down
00:21:50Was real
00:21:51And it was magnificent
00:21:52And it was wrong
00:21:55It was a city
00:21:56With great walls
00:21:57And a gate
00:21:58And the gleam of gold
00:21:59In its ruined rooms
00:22:01And when he drew that gold
00:22:03Up out of the earth
00:22:04He was certain
00:22:04Absolutely certain
00:22:06That he was holding
00:22:07The hoard of the king
00:22:08From the poem
00:22:10He gave it the king's name
00:22:12He called it
00:22:13The treasure of Priam
00:22:14And he lifted it up
00:22:16Before the world
00:22:17As proof that the song
00:22:18Had been history all along
00:22:21But the city he had reached
00:22:23Was more than a thousand years
00:22:25Too old
00:22:25To have ever known a king
00:22:27Called Priam
00:22:28Or a war fought
00:22:30Over a stolen queen
00:22:32He had dug past the right city
00:22:34And crowned the wrong one
00:22:36There is something fitting
00:22:38And a little unsettling
00:22:40In the man himself
00:22:41The one who set out
00:22:43To prove that the legend
00:22:45Was true
00:22:45Had a great gift
00:22:47For legend of his own
00:22:48He told grand stories
00:22:50About his life
00:22:51And his discoveries
00:22:52Stories that later
00:22:54Turned out to be
00:22:55Shaped and polished
00:22:56And sometimes invented outright
00:22:58The find made more dramatic
00:23:01Than it had been
00:23:01His own part in it
00:23:03Quietly enlarged
00:23:04He had come to pull the truth
00:23:07Out of the most famous story
00:23:09In the world
00:23:09And he could not stop
00:23:11Wrapping his own truth
00:23:13In story as he did it
00:23:15The line between what happened
00:23:17And what makes a better telling
00:23:19Blurred even in the hands
00:23:21Of the man holding the spade
00:23:22The cost of his hurry
00:23:24Did not show itself
00:23:26All at once
00:23:27It came later
00:23:29When more patient people
00:23:30Reached the hill
00:23:31And found that some of what
00:23:33They most needed to read
00:23:34Was simply gone
00:23:35Carried off in his spoil heaps
00:23:37Mixed and scattered
00:23:39And impossible to set back in place
00:23:42A trench like his
00:23:43Cannot be undug
00:23:45Every layer it cut through
00:23:47Gave up its order for good
00:23:49Its walls and floors
00:23:50And the quiet evidence
00:23:52Of who had lived and died there
00:23:54Torn out of sequence and lost
00:23:57He had been so desperate to prove
00:23:59That the past was real
00:24:01That he destroyed a great deal
00:24:03Of the only past
00:24:04That could have answered him
00:24:06That was the strange shape
00:24:08Of what he did
00:24:09He had been right
00:24:10That the city was there
00:24:12Far righter than all the scholars
00:24:14Who had laughed at the very idea
00:24:16The hill did hold a real Troy
00:24:19Or at least something
00:24:20The world would agree to call
00:24:22By that name
00:24:22But in his rush to find it
00:24:25He had driven his great trench
00:24:27Straight through it
00:24:28And out the far side
00:24:29And gone digging deeper still
00:24:32The city he came for
00:24:34Had been in his hands
00:24:35And he had thrown most of it away
00:24:37Without ever once knowing
00:24:39He was holding it
00:24:40And it would take a long time
00:24:43And far more careful eyes
00:24:45Before anyone could count
00:24:46The layers properly
00:24:47And finally ask the harder question
00:24:50Buried underneath them all
00:24:53For almost all of its long life
00:24:56The hill was simply a town
00:24:58Not a discovery
00:25:00Not a riddle
00:25:01Not a stack of layers
00:25:02Waiting to be counted
00:25:03But a place where people
00:25:05Woke up in the morning
00:25:08Smoke from the cooking fires
00:25:10The smell of bread
00:25:11The noise of animals in the lanes
00:25:13The harbour below
00:25:15Crowded with small boats
00:25:16And the masts of bigger ships
00:25:19Waiting on the wind
00:25:20For thousands of years
00:25:22That was mostly what it was
00:25:24Ordinary and lived in
00:25:25And loved probably
00:25:26By people who never gave
00:25:28A single thought to the ground
00:25:30Beneath their feet
00:25:31They were not heroes
00:25:33Most of them
00:25:34And they were not in any poem
00:25:36They wove cloth on heavy looms
00:25:38And you can still find
00:25:40The little clay weights
00:25:41That held the threads taut
00:25:43Thousands of them
00:25:44Scattered through every level
00:25:46Of the mound
00:25:47They made pots
00:25:49And broke them
00:25:50And made more
00:25:51They fished the strait
00:25:53And farmed the plain
00:25:54And married
00:25:54And quarrelled
00:25:55And raised children
00:25:56Who would grow up
00:25:57To do the same
00:25:58Whole generations were born
00:26:01Grew old
00:26:02And were buried
00:26:03Just beyond the walls
00:26:04Having lived an entire life
00:26:06Inside one of those
00:26:07Thin dark seams
00:26:08That the diggers
00:26:10Would one day
00:26:10Slice through
00:26:11In a single afternoon
00:26:13Picture one ordinary morning
00:26:16In one of them
00:26:16Somewhere in the long
00:26:18Middle of all that time
00:26:20The sun coming up
00:26:21Over the strait
00:26:22The water beaten
00:26:24Bright with light
00:26:25The gates standing open
00:26:26Traders laying out
00:26:28Cloth and figs
00:26:29And copper in the lanes
00:26:31Children running
00:26:32Where they had been told
00:26:33Not to run
00:26:34Someone singing
00:26:36Without thinking about it
00:26:37The way people do
00:26:39Over their work
00:26:40A wholly good
00:26:42And unremarkable day
00:26:43In a city
00:26:44That was sure of itself
00:26:45On a hill
00:26:47That had already buried
00:26:48Four or five
00:26:49Such cities below it
00:26:50And would bury more
00:26:52No one that morning
00:26:54Felt the weight
00:26:55Of the dead cities
00:26:56Underfoot
00:26:56And why would they
00:26:58On a morning
00:26:59As clear and good
00:27:00As that one
00:27:01And all of it
00:27:02Went on for a length
00:27:03Of time
00:27:04That is genuinely
00:27:05Hard to hold
00:27:06In the mind
00:27:07The town at the very bottom
00:27:09Was already old
00:27:10Beyond memory
00:27:11When the town above it
00:27:12Was new
00:27:13And that one in turn
00:27:15Had crumbled into legend
00:27:16Before the next was raised
00:27:18From the first
00:27:20Of those cities
00:27:20To the last
00:27:21Was the better part
00:27:22Of three thousand years
00:27:24Nine towns
00:27:25Rising and standing
00:27:27And falling
00:27:28One after another
00:27:29On the very same patch
00:27:31Of windy ground
00:27:32Above the sea
00:27:33And here is the thing
00:27:35That is easy to miss
00:27:36Standing above it all
00:27:38And counting
00:27:40Not one of those cities
00:27:41Knew it was a layer
00:27:43Each one
00:27:44While it stood
00:27:45Was simply the world
00:27:47The people in it
00:27:48Walked streets
00:27:49They assumed
00:27:50Their grandchildren
00:27:51Would walk
00:27:52And looked at walls
00:27:53They assumed
00:27:54Would always be standing
00:27:56And carried on
00:27:57As if their own city
00:27:58Out of all the cities
00:28:00That had ever been
00:28:01Was the one
00:28:02That would not end
00:28:04They had no feeling
00:28:05For the ones
00:28:06Buried beneath them
00:28:07And no idea
00:28:08Of the ones
00:28:09That would one day
00:28:10Rise on their bones
00:28:12They were
00:28:13Every one of them
00:28:14Certain of the ground
00:28:16And most of their endings
00:28:17Were not even dramatic
00:28:20A city would slowly
00:28:21Lose its trade
00:28:22Or be shaken apart
00:28:24By an earthquake
00:28:24And patched
00:28:25And lived in anyway
00:28:26Or simply thin out
00:28:28Across the generations
00:28:29Until a new people
00:28:31Drifted in
00:28:32And built over
00:28:33What was left
00:28:34The hill took
00:28:35All of it the same way
00:28:37Gently
00:28:37Without alarm
00:28:38The way it had taken
00:28:40Everything before
00:28:42Ruin
00:28:42Here
00:28:43Was not a catastrophe
00:28:45It was only
00:28:46The slow weather
00:28:47Of the place
00:28:48A thing that came
00:28:49Round every few centuries
00:28:51Like a long
00:28:52And quiet season
00:28:53But one of those cities
00:28:55Did not end
00:28:56Like the others
00:28:58Somewhere in the upper
00:28:59Middle of the mound
00:29:00In the layers
00:29:01The excavator
00:29:02Had torn straight through
00:29:04Without looking
00:29:04There is a city
00:29:06That did not decline
00:29:07And did not fade
00:29:09And was not simply
00:29:10Built over
00:29:11By whoever came next
00:29:12It ended
00:29:14All at once
00:29:15And when patient hands
00:29:17Finally reached it
00:29:18And brushed the earth
00:29:20Back from its streets
00:29:21They found something
00:29:22The gentle layers
00:29:23Above and below it
00:29:25Did not have
00:29:26They found fire
00:29:29The first thing
00:29:30Is the colour
00:29:31Run your eye
00:29:33Down the cut face
00:29:34Of the mound
00:29:34Through the pale browns
00:29:36And greys
00:29:37Of all those patient
00:29:38Ordinary centuries
00:29:39And at one level
00:29:41The earth changes
00:29:43It darkens
00:29:44A thick black band
00:29:46Runs through the hill
00:29:47Like a bruise
00:29:48A stratum of ash
00:29:50And char
00:29:51And burnt debris
00:29:52In places
00:29:53More than a metre deep
00:29:54Three thousand years on
00:29:56You can still
00:29:57Press your hand into it
00:29:59And bring your fingers
00:30:00Back grey
00:30:01Whatever happened
00:30:02To that city
00:30:03It happened in fire
00:30:05And the fire
00:30:06Was not small
00:30:07This was not
00:30:08A hearth left burning
00:30:10Or one house
00:30:11Gone up in the night
00:30:13The black layer
00:30:14Is everywhere
00:30:15Across the level
00:30:16In every quarter
00:30:18That has been dug
00:30:19Which means
00:30:20The whole city burned
00:30:21All of it
00:30:22More or less at once
00:30:24Walls that had stood
00:30:25For generations
00:30:26Came down into the streets
00:30:28Roofs fell onto floors
00:30:30And sealed
00:30:31Whatever lay beneath them
00:30:32Under heat and rubble
00:30:34When a place burns like that
00:30:36Completely
00:30:37In a single event
00:30:39It is almost never an accident
00:30:42Cities do not all catch fire
00:30:44In the same hour by chance
00:30:47And the strangest part
00:30:49Is what the diggers found
00:30:50Beneath the ash
00:30:51In the streets
00:30:52As they had been
00:30:53Just before the end
00:30:55This had not been a comfortable
00:30:57Confident city
00:30:58In its last years
00:31:00The fine old houses
00:31:02Of an earlier
00:31:03And grander town
00:31:04On the same spot
00:31:05Had been carved up
00:31:07Subdivided
00:31:07Crowded with smaller dwellings
00:31:09Packed in wall to wall
00:31:11As though far too many people
00:31:13Were trying to live
00:31:14Inside the walls at once
00:31:15And sunk into the floors
00:31:18Of those crowded houses
00:31:19Were storage jars
00:31:21Big ones
00:31:22Buried up to their necks
00:31:23In the ground
00:31:24The kind you feel
00:31:26When you are laying in food
00:31:27And water
00:31:28And do not know
00:31:29How long you will need it
00:31:30To last
00:31:32It is what a city looks like
00:31:34When it is bracing for something
00:31:36And pulling everyone
00:31:37Inside the walls
00:31:38To wait it out
00:31:40There are other signs
00:31:41Scattered and argued over
00:31:43But hard to look away from
00:31:46There were the points of weapons
00:31:47In the ruin layer
00:31:49Bronze arrowheads
00:31:50Lying in the streets
00:31:51And lodged against the walls
00:31:54In a few places
00:31:55There were human remains
00:31:56Left where they had fallen
00:31:58And never properly buried
00:32:00Which is its own kind of evidence
00:32:02Because people bury their dead
00:32:05Unless something stops them
00:32:06None of it
00:32:08On its own
00:32:09Proves a war
00:32:10But all of it together
00:32:12Describes a city that was crowded
00:32:14And frightened
00:32:15And stopped for a siege
00:32:17And then destroyed by fire
00:32:19With people still inside it
00:32:21And here is the part that makes the hair stand up
00:32:24This burnt city
00:32:26This crowded
00:32:27Besieged
00:32:28Fire-ended city
00:32:30Sits in the mound
00:32:31At very nearly the depth
00:32:33And very nearly the age
00:32:35Where the city of the poem
00:32:36Ought to be
00:32:38Not the deep old town
00:32:40The excavator ran down to
00:32:42With its gold
00:32:43A thousand years too early
00:32:45This one
00:32:46A great walled city
00:32:48Above the plain and the strait
00:32:50Prosperous once
00:32:51Then crowded and afraid
00:32:53Then burned to the ground
00:32:55In a single catastrophe
00:32:57In just about the years
00:32:59When the song says
00:33:00A famous city fell
00:33:02If Troy was ever real
00:33:04If any of it was ever real
00:33:06This band of black ash
00:33:08Is the best candidate
00:33:10The earth has ever offered
00:33:12If you are still here
00:33:13Walking down through these layers with me
00:33:16Let me say something to you directly
00:33:19We are halfway into this now
00:33:21And most people never come this far
00:33:24So I'll ask you plainly

00:33:47To keep this work alive
00:33:48It is the difference between
00:33:50This archive growing quietly
00:33:53And this archive going silent
00:33:55And now
00:33:56Back down into the ash
00:33:58Where the burned city
00:34:00Is still waiting to be read
00:34:01And yet
00:34:03For everything that Black Leia tells us
00:34:06There is one thing it does not say
00:34:08And it is the one thing
00:34:10The poem most cares about
00:34:12The ash proves that the city burned
00:34:15It does not say who set it alight
00:34:18Fire does not keep the face
00:34:20Of the hand that started it
00:34:23Ruin looks much the same
00:34:25Whether it comes from an army
00:34:27Mast at the gates
00:34:28Or the ground heaving in an earthquake
00:34:30Or a single quarrel inside the walls
00:34:33That got out of hand
00:34:34On a dry and windy night
00:34:36So the earth had given up
00:34:38An enormous thing
00:34:39And withheld the very heart of it
00:34:41In the same breath
00:34:43It could show
00:34:44Beyond any real doubt
00:34:46That a great city on this hill
00:34:48Had once braced itself
00:34:50And crowded its people
00:34:52Behind its walls and burned
00:34:54It could not show why
00:34:56Or by whose hand
00:34:57Or whether a thousand ships
00:34:59Had ever had anything to do with it at all
00:35:01The ground remembers the fire
00:35:04It does not remember who lit it
00:35:07And so the oldest question came back
00:35:10Sharper now than it had ever been
00:35:12Standing in the ash of a city
00:35:14That had really, truly burned
00:35:18A ruin is not silent
00:35:21If you know how to read it
00:35:23The way a city falls
00:35:25Leaves a kind of handwriting
00:35:27In the wreckage
00:35:28And a careful eye
00:35:29Can often tell
00:35:30One cause of death
00:35:31From another
00:35:33Fire set by men
00:35:35Does not look quite like fire
00:35:37From a lightning strike
00:35:38A wall pushed over by an enemy
00:35:40Does not fall the same way
00:35:42As a wall shaken down from below
00:35:45So when the diggers stood
00:35:46In the ash of the burned city
00:35:48They were not only asking
00:35:50Whether it had died
00:35:52They were trying to read how
00:35:54And at whose hand
00:35:56One reading is the one
00:35:58Everybody wants
00:35:59It is the reading the poem
00:36:01Hands you for free
00:36:03A city crowded with frightened people
00:36:06Its great houses cut up to shelter
00:36:09A swollen population
00:36:10Food and water buried in the floors
00:36:13Against a long wait
00:36:14Weapons scattered through the ruin
00:36:16The dead left unburied in the streets
00:36:19And then fire
00:36:20Put those things in a row
00:36:22And they tell a story almost on their own
00:36:25An enemy came
00:36:27The city pulled everyone inside the walls
00:36:30And held out as long as it could
00:36:32And in the end
00:36:33The walls were not enough
00:36:35And the place was stormed and burned
00:36:37With its people still inside it
00:36:39It is a powerful reading
00:36:42And it may very well be the right one
00:36:45But notice what it quietly does
00:36:48It takes a layer of ash
00:36:50That proves only
00:36:52That a city burned with people inside
00:36:54And it fills in all the rest
00:36:56From the song
00:36:57The enemy
00:36:58The siege
00:36:59The reason
00:37:00The ground gave us the destruction
00:37:03The story gave us the army
00:37:05And the two have been braided together
00:37:07So tightly
00:37:08That it is hard
00:37:10Now
00:37:10To remember which thread came from the earth
00:37:13And which came from the poem
00:37:15Because there is another reading
00:37:17And the hill supports it just as well
00:37:20Just below the burned city
00:37:23An earlier and far grander town had stood
00:37:26With walls so massive
00:37:28That they still impress the people who measure them today
00:37:32And that city
00:37:33The magnificent one
00:37:34Seems to have come to its own violent end
00:37:38Not long before
00:37:39In a way that does not look like an army at all
00:37:42Its great walls were thrown down
00:37:44In a pattern that looks less like men
00:37:46With rams and torches
00:37:48And more like the ground itself convulsing
00:37:51One terrible shrug of the earth
00:37:53That brought the towers down
00:37:54The Greeks had a god for that
00:37:57The earth shaker
00:37:58Poseidon
00:37:59Who in the very same poem
00:38:01Is said to have built Troy's walls
00:38:03And to have carried the city
00:38:05An old and bitter grudge
00:38:07It is at least possible
00:38:09That the song remembers a real earthquake
00:38:12Dressed up across the centuries
00:38:14As the anger of a god
00:38:17And this is where the ground
00:38:18Stops being a friend to the story
00:38:21Because the hill does not hand us
00:38:23One clean catastrophe
00:38:24To hang the legend on
00:38:27It offers at least two great cities
00:38:29Close together in time
00:38:31Each destroyed in its turn
00:38:33One that looks like the earth
00:38:35And one that looks like an enemy
00:38:37And scholars have argued
00:38:39For more than a hundred years
00:38:41And are arguing still
00:38:43Over which of them
00:38:44If either
00:38:45Is the city the poem is singing about
00:38:48The men and women
00:38:50Who have given their whole lives
00:38:52To that hill
00:38:52Cannot agree on which fire
00:38:55Is the famous one
00:38:56And there is a wider doubt still
00:38:58Waiting underneath even that
00:39:01The years around the burning
00:39:03Of that city
00:39:04Were not quiet years anywhere
00:39:06In that part of the world
00:39:08Across the whole region
00:39:09In roughly the same span
00:39:11Great cities were falling and burning
00:39:14One after another
00:39:15For reasons that are still
00:39:17Not fully understood
00:39:18So even if the city
00:39:20Was stormed by an enemy
00:39:21That enemy need not have been
00:39:24The one from the song
00:39:25And the war
00:39:26Need not have been the war
00:39:29A burned city
00:39:30In that age
00:39:31Was not a rare and singular thing
00:39:34For a while
00:39:35It was almost the shape
00:39:37Of the times
00:39:38So here is what the earth
00:39:40Will actually swear to
00:39:41And here is where it goes silent
00:39:44It will swear that on this hill
00:39:46More than once
00:39:48A great city was destroyed
00:39:50Suddenly and completely
00:39:52With terror in its final days
00:39:55That much is beyond any doubt
00:39:57What it will not do
00:39:59Is name the enemy
00:40:00Or choose between the earthquake
00:40:02And the army
00:40:03Or tell you whether any of it
00:40:05Has the faintest thing to do
00:40:07With a stolen queen
00:40:08And a thousand ships
00:40:10The catastrophe is certain
00:40:12The cause is kept back
00:40:15And so you find yourself
00:40:17Doing the very thing
00:40:18The careful diggers
00:40:19Tried so hard not to do
00:40:21Turning away from the ground
00:40:22And back toward the words
00:40:24To see whether anyone
00:40:26Anywhere
00:40:27Ever wrote the city's name down
00:40:29While it was still standing
00:40:33Hundreds of miles inland
00:40:35Far from the windy hill
00:40:36And the sea
00:40:37In the heart of an empire
00:40:39Most people today
00:40:40Have never heard of
00:40:41There were rooms full of clay
00:40:44Not pots
00:40:45But tablets
00:40:46Thousands upon thousands
00:40:48Of flat clay tablets
00:40:50Pressed all over
00:40:52With the small wedge-shaped marks
00:40:54Of a writing older than the alphabet
00:40:56And then baked hard
00:40:58By accident
00:40:59In the very fire
00:41:00That destroyed the palace
00:41:01That held them
00:41:02The fire that ended that empire
00:41:05Is the only reason
00:41:06Its records survived at all
00:41:08And in those records
00:41:10Set down
00:41:11While the hill on the coast
00:41:12Was still a living city
00:41:14Something was waiting
00:41:16That no one had thought
00:41:17To look for
00:41:19The empire
00:41:20Was the Hittite empire
00:41:21And in its day
00:41:23It was one of the great powers
00:41:25Of the world
00:41:25The equal of Egypt
00:41:27Ruling much of what is now Turkey
00:41:29From a capital up in the mountains
00:41:32And like all great powers
00:41:34It ran on paperwork
00:41:36Its kings kept treaties
00:41:38And letters between rulers
00:41:40And complaints
00:41:41And reports from the edges of the realm
00:41:44All of it filed away in clay
00:41:46It is the cold, careful record
00:41:49Of a working state
00:41:50The most unromantic writing imaginable
00:41:53Which is exactly what makes
00:41:56What it contains
00:41:57So hard to wave away
00:41:58Because scattered through
00:42:01That dry diplomatic clay
00:42:02Is the name of a place
00:42:04A small kingdom
00:42:06Out on the northwest coast
00:42:08In precisely the corner of the map
00:42:10Where the hill stands
00:42:11That the Hittites
00:42:13Called Wee Lusa
00:42:15And here is the thing
00:42:17That makes scholars lean in
00:42:18In the oldest form of the Greek name for Troy
00:42:21The name in the poem itself
00:42:23There was a sound that later fell away
00:42:26A soft W at the front
00:42:28So that the city
00:42:30The Greeks called Ilios
00:42:32Had once been something more like Willios
00:42:36Willios and Wee Lusa
00:42:38Across two languages and two scripts
00:42:40And several hundred miles of mountain
00:42:43Are very nearly the same word
00:42:45So the city was real
00:42:48Not as a memory in a song
00:42:50But as an address in the files of an empire
00:42:53A small kingdom that existed
00:42:56That was paid attention to
00:42:58That was written about
00:42:59By the bureaucrats of a superpower
00:43:02It had kings
00:43:04It swore oaths
00:43:06And signed treaties
00:43:07And sat
00:43:08A little nervously
00:43:09On the frontier
00:43:10Between the great powers of its age
00:43:13The way small countries always have
00:43:15The legend it turned out
00:43:18Had a real and findable place on the map
00:43:21Doing real and unglamorous political business
00:43:24And then it gets stranger
00:43:26And a little uncanny
00:43:28One of those Hittite treaties
00:43:30Is made with a particular king
00:43:32Of that coastal city
00:43:34And the treaty gives his name
00:43:36He was called
00:43:38Arlak Sandu
00:43:39Say it slowly
00:43:41And listen to it
00:43:43Because the prince in the poem
00:43:45The one who steals the queen
00:43:47And brings the whole war down on the city
00:43:49Has two names
00:43:51We usually call him Paris
00:43:53But the poem also calls him Alexander
00:43:57And Arlak Sandu
00:44:00A real king of the real city
00:44:02Written into a real treaty in wet clay
00:44:05Is, to the ear
00:44:06Almost exactly that name
00:44:09There was an Alexander of Willusa
00:44:12Set down in clay 3,000 years ago
00:44:15While the city he ruled
00:44:17Was still standing
00:44:18And he is not the only echo
00:44:21The same archive speaks
00:44:23Again and again
00:44:25Of a restless power
00:44:26Across the water to the west
00:44:28A sea people the Hittites watched
00:44:31With wary respect
00:44:32And sometimes open anger
00:44:34The name the clay gives them
00:44:37Is, to the ear
00:44:38Almost the same as the name
00:44:40The poem gives the Greeks
00:44:42Who sailed against Troy
00:44:43The Achaeans
00:44:44And in among the treaties
00:44:46There are letters
00:44:48That complain of trouble
00:44:49Over that very coastal city
00:44:51Friction
00:44:52Raids
00:44:53A tug of war
00:44:54Between the empire
00:44:55And the sea power
00:44:56For the control of the place
00:44:58The bare bones of the legend are there
00:45:01A real Troy
00:45:03A ruler whose name is Alexander
00:45:05A Greek-like power
00:45:07Reaching across the sea
00:45:09And conflict
00:45:10Real conflict
00:45:11Over the city itself
00:45:13And that should be
00:45:15The happy ending
00:45:16The moment the song
00:45:17And the ground
00:45:18Finally meet
00:45:19But read the clay again
00:45:21Slowly
00:45:22And feel what is missing from it
00:45:24There is no queen
00:45:26In those tablets
00:45:27There is no stolen wife
00:45:29No face that launched the ships
00:45:32No ten year siege
00:45:34No grief of a great warrior
00:45:36No horse
00:45:37The clay speaks of borders
00:45:40And oaths
00:45:41And obligations
00:45:42And the management
00:45:44Of a difficult frontier
00:45:46It gives us a war
00:45:47The way a ledger
00:45:49Gives us a war
00:45:50In the language of treaties
00:45:51And trouble
00:45:52And never once
00:45:54In the language of the song
00:45:55So the records gave
00:45:57And the records withheld
00:45:59In the very same breath
00:46:00Exactly as the ground had
00:46:03They proved that there was a real city
00:46:06With very nearly the right name
00:46:07A real king
00:46:09With uncannily the right name
00:46:11And a real quarrel
00:46:12With a sea power
00:46:13That looked a great deal
00:46:14Like the Greeks
00:46:16What they did not prove
00:46:18What they did not so much as mention
00:46:20Was the one thing
00:46:22The whole song is built around
00:46:24The name written in the clay
00:46:26Is not Helen's name
00:46:28It is a treaty
00:46:30And so the question
00:46:31Turned once more
00:46:32And went looking out
00:46:34Across the water
00:46:35Toward the people
00:46:37Who might have sailed
00:46:38Against that city
00:46:39To ask the simplest thing of all
00:46:41Not why they came
00:46:43But whether they could have come at all
00:46:47On the far side of that water
00:46:49The people who might have come
00:46:51Were no fantasy at all
00:46:53They were one of the hardest
00:46:55Most warlike civilisations
00:46:58The Bronze Age ever produced
00:46:59And they had left their mark
00:47:01On the land of Greece in stone
00:47:03You can still walk up to
00:47:05And lay your hand against enough
00:47:08Great citadels on high ground
00:47:10Crowned with walls built from blocks
00:47:12So enormous
00:47:13That no machine they owned
00:47:15Could have lifted them
00:47:16And no one today is entirely sure
00:47:18How they did
00:47:19These were not gentle traders
00:47:22They were a people organised
00:47:24From the top down
00:47:25Around war
00:47:26The walls are the first thing
00:47:29That tells you who they were
00:47:30Their greatest stronghold
00:47:33A citadel called Mycenae
00:47:36Gave its name to the whole civilisation
00:47:39And later Greeks
00:47:40Standing beneath its stone
00:47:42Centuries afterward
00:47:43Could not believe that human hands
00:47:46Had ever raised them
00:47:47The blocks were too big
00:47:49Too heavy
00:47:50The work too far beyond anything
00:47:53Those later people could do themselves
00:47:55So they decided
00:47:57The walls must have been built
00:47:58By giants
00:47:59By the Cyclopeps
00:48:00The one-eyed monsters
00:48:02Of their own legends
00:48:04It is worth holding on to that
00:48:06For a moment
00:48:07Faced with a real thing
00:48:09They could not explain
00:48:10Real stone they could see and touch
00:48:13They reached automatically
00:48:14For a myth
00:48:15The habit is very old
00:48:19Inside those walls
00:48:20And in the graves beneath them
00:48:22Lay the proof of what these people valued
00:48:25Long swords
00:48:27Made for killing
00:48:28Laid carefully beside their dead
00:48:31Armour of beaten bronze
00:48:33And helmets
00:48:34Sewn from the tusks of wild boar
00:48:36Exactly the kind of helmet
00:48:38The poem describes its heroes wearing
00:48:40A detail so precise
00:48:42And so accurate
00:48:44That the song must have carried it down
00:48:46Across the centuries
00:48:47From somewhere real
00:48:49And gold
00:48:51Masks of gold
00:48:52Laid over the faces of dead kings
00:48:55A great wealth of it
00:48:56Buried with men
00:48:58Who had plainly spent their lives
00:48:59Taking what they wanted
00:49:01With bronze and fire
00:49:03And they did not stay home
00:49:05Their pottery
00:49:07Turns up all around the eastern sea
00:49:09In Egypt
00:49:10Along the coasts of the Levant
00:49:12On the shores of Anatolia itself
00:49:15Carried there in their own ships
00:49:18They were sailors
00:49:19And raiders
00:49:20And traders
00:49:21With a reach that ran
00:49:23Right across the water
00:49:24To the very coast
00:49:25Where the hill stands
00:49:26The sea that lay between them and Troy
00:49:29Was not a barrier to them
00:49:31It was a road they already knew
00:49:34How to travel
00:49:35And they could organise
00:49:38The clay tablets from their own palaces
00:49:40When they were finely deciphered
00:49:43Turned out to be inventories
00:49:44Careful counts of what a kingdom owned
00:49:47Down to its fighting strength
00:49:49Its chariots
00:49:51Its bronze
00:49:51Its rowers
00:49:53These were states that could number their men
00:49:56And equip them
00:49:57And put them to sea in an ordered fleet
00:49:59Everything the poem claims the Greeks did
00:50:02Gather a great coalition
00:50:04Cross the water
00:50:06And lay siege to a coastal city
00:50:08Was well within the power of the people
00:50:11Who actually lived on that mainland
00:50:13The expedition in the song is not impossible
00:50:17It is, if anything
00:50:18Exactly the kind of thing
00:50:20These people were built to do
00:50:22And remember the cold clay of the Hittites
00:50:25And the restless sea power it kept complaining about
00:50:28The one whose name was almost the word
00:50:31The poem uses for the Greeks
00:50:34That was these people
00:50:36The Greeks of the mainland
00:50:38And the Hittites' troublesome sea power
00:50:40Are very probably one and the same
00:50:43Which means we are not merely guessing
00:50:45That they reached this coast
00:50:47Their enemies wrote it down
00:50:49They were there
00:50:51In those waters
00:50:52Meddling in the affairs of that very city
00:50:55In just the right centuries
00:50:58It will not surprise you to learn who dug them up
00:51:01The same restless man who had crowned the wrong city at Troy
00:51:05Went to the mainland
00:51:06And opened the great graves there as well
00:51:09And when he lifted a mask of gold
00:51:11From the face of a long dead king
00:51:13He could not stop himself
00:51:16He announced that he had gazed upon the face of the warlord
00:51:19Who leads the fleet in the poem
00:51:21The king of kings himself
00:51:23He had not of course
00:51:25The mask was centuries too old
00:51:28The wrong man again
00:51:30Named for the song again
00:51:31But you can understand the pull
00:51:34When the real thing is this close to the legend
00:51:37The legend keeps reaching down to claim it
00:51:40So here is where the Greeks leave us
00:51:44Having handed over everything
00:51:46Except the one thing we wanted
00:51:49They were real
00:51:50They were warlike and rich and organized
00:51:53And they sailed these waters
00:51:56And reached this coast
00:51:57And quarreled over this city
00:51:59They had, beyond any doubt
00:52:02The means to fight the war in the poem
00:52:04What no spade has ever turned up
00:52:07On either shore
00:52:08Is the war itself
00:52:10The proof that this fleet
00:52:12In this one generation
00:52:13Crossed for this reason
00:52:15And burned that city for a stolen queen
00:52:18We can show you the sword
00:52:20We cannot show you the blow
00:52:22And with the ground exhausted
00:52:24And the clay exhausted
00:52:26There is only one place left to go
00:52:29Back into the song itself
00:52:31To hear, one more time
00:52:33The story that all of this real and stubborn evidence
00:52:37Still cannot quite confirm
00:52:39And still cannot quite kill
00:52:43In the song
00:52:44The war is already old
00:52:46By the time the poem opens
00:52:47Ten years the Greeks have been camped
00:52:50On the plain below the city
00:52:52Ten years of fighting and dying
00:52:54Within sight of those walls
00:52:56And nothing decided
00:52:59And the great poem does not even tell the whole of it
00:53:02It does not begin with the stolen queen
00:53:05And it does not end with the city's fall
00:53:08It chooses instead
00:53:10A few weeks near the end
00:53:12And one man's anger
00:53:14And through that narrow opening
00:53:16It shows you everything
00:53:18The man is Achilles
00:53:20The greatest fighter the Greeks have
00:53:23Half a god
00:53:24And entirely impossible
00:53:26And the poem is not really about the war at all
00:53:30It is about his rage
00:53:32He quarrels with his own commander
00:53:34Over a woman taken from him as a prize
00:53:37And in his fury
00:53:39He pulls back to his ships
00:53:41And refuses to fight
00:53:42And lets his own side be slaughtered
00:53:45To punish the men who slighted him
00:53:47It is a small and petty
00:53:50And entirely human reason
00:53:52And out of it
00:53:54Everything that matters flows
00:53:57While Achilles sulks
00:53:58The city's champion takes the field
00:54:01His name is Hector
00:54:03The eldest son of the old king
00:54:05The best of the Trojans
00:54:07The man the whole city leans on
00:54:09The poem loves him in a way
00:54:12It does not quite love anyone else
00:54:14It shows him not only as a warrior
00:54:17But as a husband and a father
00:54:19Saying goodbye to his wife on the walls
00:54:22Reaching out for his baby son
00:54:24Who screams at the sight
00:54:26Of the great horsehair crest on his helmet
00:54:29So that Hector laughs
00:54:31And lifts the helmet off
00:54:32And is a man again for a moment
00:54:35And all the while the poem knows
00:54:38The way our observer knows
00:54:40That this man is going to die
00:54:42What finally breaks Achilles
00:54:44Is not the war
00:54:46It is grief
00:54:48The man he loves best in all the world
00:54:51His dearest companion
00:54:52Puts on Achilles' own armour
00:54:55And goes out to fight in his place
00:54:57To save the Greeks from the ruin
00:54:59That Achilles has let fall on them
00:55:01And Hector kills him
00:55:03And when the news reaches Achilles
00:55:06The rage that he had turned against his own side
00:55:10Turns outward
00:55:11All of it at once
00:55:12Toward the man who killed his friend
00:55:15What comes next
00:55:17Is one of the most terrible things
00:55:19In all of literature
00:55:21Achilles goes back to the war
00:55:23Like something elemental
00:55:24And he hunts Hector down beneath the walls
00:55:27In full view of the man's own family
00:55:30Watching from above
00:55:31And he kills him
00:55:33And then he does not stop
00:55:36Mad with grief
00:55:37He ties the body to his chariot
00:55:40And drags it round and round the city
00:55:42Day after day
00:55:43Through the dust
00:55:44Where the dead man's father and mother and wife
00:55:48Are forced to watch
00:55:49It is the cruelty of a man
00:55:51Who has lost the one thing that kept him human
00:55:54Taking it out on the body
00:55:56Of the one who took it
00:55:58And then comes the scene
00:56:00The whole poem has been moving toward
00:56:02And it is not a battle
00:56:05It is two men in a tent
00:56:07At night
00:56:08The old king
00:56:10Priam
00:56:10Hector's father
00:56:12Comes alone and unarmed
00:56:13Through the enemy camp
00:56:15Into the tent of the man
00:56:17Who has killed and dishonoured his son
00:56:18And he kneels
00:56:20And he kisses the hands of Achilles
00:56:22The very hands that did it
00:56:24And he begs for his boy's body back
00:56:26So that he can bury him
00:56:28And Achilles
00:56:29The half-god
00:56:30The killing machine
00:56:31Looks at this broken old man
00:56:34And thinks of his own father far away
00:56:37And weeps
00:56:38And the two of them
00:56:40The murderer
00:56:41And the grieving father
00:56:42Sit and cry together in the dark for a while
00:56:45As enemies
00:56:46And as men
00:56:47The poem ends there
00:56:50More or less
00:56:51With the burial of Hector
00:56:52But everyone listening
00:56:55Already knows what the song
00:56:57Does not stay to show
00:56:59Achilles himself
00:57:00Will be dead
00:57:01Before the year is out
00:57:02Killed near these same walls
00:57:04The city
00:57:06Stripped of its great defender
00:57:08Will not hold for very much longer
00:57:11And in the end
00:57:12It will fall and burn
00:57:13And its men will be killed
00:57:15And its women
00:57:16Carried off across the sea
00:57:18And the windy hill
00:57:19Will go silent
00:57:20For the first time in an age
00:57:23The song carries its own ending
00:57:25Folded up inside it
00:57:26Unspoken
00:57:27The way grief
00:57:29Carries the death
00:57:30That caused it
00:57:31And here is the unbearable thing
00:57:33About all of it
00:57:35Not one moment of it
00:57:37Is in the ground
00:57:38No spade
00:57:39Will ever turn up
00:57:40Achilles grief
00:57:41Or Priam
00:57:42Kissing those terrible hands
00:57:44Or a baby
00:57:45Frightened by a helmet
00:57:47On the wall of a city
00:57:48That was already doomed
00:57:49None of it
00:57:50Left a layer
00:57:52And yet anyone
00:57:53Who has ever heard it
00:57:54Knows that it is true
00:57:56True in the way
00:57:57That matters most
00:57:58True about war
00:58:00And rage
00:58:01And love
00:58:02And loss in a way
00:58:03That no treaty
00:58:04And no band of ash
00:58:06Could ever be
00:58:07It is the realest
00:58:09Unreal thing we have
00:58:10And there is one last piece of it
00:58:13One image more famous
00:58:15Than all the rest
00:58:16That sits exactly
00:58:17On the crossing point
00:58:19Between the story
00:58:20And the dirt
00:58:21And refuses
00:58:22Absolutely to be settled
00:58:23Either way
00:58:26Close your eyes
00:58:27And you can see it
00:58:28Even if you have never read
00:58:30A single word of the poem
00:58:32A huge wooden horse
00:58:34Standing alone
00:58:35On the empty plain at dawn
00:58:37Taller than the gates
00:58:38Its great flanks smooth and silent
00:58:41The Greek camp gone
00:58:43The beach bare
00:58:44The sea empty
00:58:46All the way to the horizon
00:58:47It is one of the most familiar images
00:58:50The human imagination owns
00:58:52Almost everyone
00:58:54In almost every country on earth
00:58:57Can picture that horse
00:58:58And almost no one stops
00:59:01To notice the strangest thing about it
00:59:03The story is simple and perfect
00:59:06And that is part of its power
00:59:09After ten years
00:59:11The Greeks cannot take the city by force
00:59:14So they take it by a trick
00:59:16They build the great hollow horse
00:59:19Hide their best men inside it
00:59:21And sail away
00:59:22Pretending at last to give up and go home
00:59:25The Trojans
00:59:27Exhausted and overjoyed
00:59:29Haul the thing in through their own gates
00:59:31As a trophy
00:59:32A gift to the gods
00:59:33A monument to a war survived
00:59:37And in the night
00:59:38The men climb down out of its belly
00:59:40And open the gates from the inside
00:59:42And let the army back in
00:59:44And the city that ten years of war
00:59:47Could not break
00:59:48Is destroyed in a single dark hour
00:59:50By its own joy
00:59:52And here is the first quiet surprise
00:59:56The horse is not in the great poem at all
00:59:59The oldest song
01:00:01The one about the rage of Achilles
01:00:03Ends before the city falls
01:00:05And never mentions it
01:00:07The horse comes later
01:00:09From other poets
01:00:10In other centuries
01:00:12The most vivid of them
01:00:13A Roman writing
01:00:15The better part of a thousand years
01:00:17After the war was supposed to have happened
01:00:19The single most famous image
01:00:22Of the whole legend
01:00:23Is also one of its youngest pieces
01:00:26Grown into the story
01:00:28Long after the rest
01:00:29The way a pearl grows
01:00:31In layers around a grain of sand
01:00:33But the truly strange thing
01:00:36Is what the horse does
01:00:37To anyone trying to dig for the truth
01:00:39Of every single element
01:00:42In the entire legend
01:00:43It is the one
01:00:44The ground can never touch
01:00:46Think about what it actually was
01:00:49A thing of wood
01:00:51Built once
01:00:52Used once and then
01:00:54In the story
01:00:55Broken up
01:00:56Or burned in the sack that followed
01:00:59Wood rots
01:01:00A single wooden object
01:01:03Three thousand years gone
01:01:05Leaves nothing behind
01:01:06No foundation
01:01:08No ash signature
01:01:09No layer
01:01:10No trace at all
01:01:13Even if it had been entirely real
01:01:15There would be precisely
01:01:17Nothing left of it to find
01:01:18The horse is unprovable
01:01:20By its very nature
01:01:22And just as perfectly
01:01:23It is impossible to disprove
01:01:26That has never stopped people
01:01:28From trying to find
01:01:29The real thing behind it
01:01:32Some have guessed
01:01:33The horse was never a horse at all
01:01:35But a way of remembering
01:01:36A siege engine
01:01:37A great wheeled tower
01:01:39Or a ram rolled up
01:01:40Against the walls
01:01:41The kind of machine
01:01:43That might
01:01:44To later memory come
01:01:45To look like a wooden beast
01:01:47Brought up to the city
01:01:49Others reach back to the god
01:01:51To Poseidon
01:01:52Who was the lord of horses
01:01:54As well as the shaker of the earth
01:01:56And they wonder
01:01:57Whether the horse
01:01:58That brought the walls down
01:02:00Was all along a memory
01:02:01Of the earthquake
01:02:02We met before
01:02:03The god's own animal
01:02:04In another shape
01:02:06Each idea is clever
01:02:08Each one is possible
01:02:10And not a single one of them
01:02:12Can ever be shown to be true
01:02:14Because there is nothing
01:02:16In the ground
01:02:16To test it against
01:02:18And maybe that is exactly
01:02:20Why the image refuses to die
01:02:23A wooden horse
01:02:24On an empty plain
01:02:25Is too good a thing
01:02:27To give up
01:02:28Whether it ever happened
01:02:29Or not
01:02:30It holds in one picture
01:02:32Everything the legend is about
01:02:34The gift that is really a trap
01:02:37The victory that is really a doom
01:02:39The moment a proud city is undone
01:02:42Not by its enemies
01:02:44But by its own longing
01:02:45To believe the war was finally over
01:02:48The horse is not famous
01:02:50Because it is proven
01:02:52It is famous because it is true about us
01:02:55And the ground was never going to be able
01:02:57To say a single word about that
01:02:59So there it stands
01:03:01At the very centre
01:03:03Of the most famous story in the world
01:03:05The one thing everyone can see
01:03:08And no one can find
01:03:10The walls
01:03:11The dirt can argue about
01:03:13And the fire it can prove
01:03:15And the names in the clay
01:03:17It can almost confirm
01:03:19But the horse
01:03:21The heart of it
01:03:22The image that ended the war
01:03:24A wooden horse leaves no layer
01:03:26And never will
01:03:27And standing there
01:03:29At the edge of everything
01:03:30The ground can and cannot say
01:03:32You begin to wonder
01:03:34Whether you have been asking the hill
01:03:36The wrong question this whole time
01:03:40There were eight other cities in that hill
01:03:43We have spent all this time on one of them
01:03:45The burned one
01:03:47The crowded and frightened one
01:03:49That ended in fire
01:03:50Because that is the one
01:03:52The poem might be about
01:03:54But it was one layer out of nine
01:03:57Above it and below it
01:03:59Lay eight other worlds
01:04:00Eight other cities
01:04:02Full of people who lived and worked
01:04:04And died on that windy hill
01:04:06And not one of them
01:04:08Had a poem
01:04:09Or a hero
01:04:10Or a war that anyone would ever remember
01:04:13And here is the question
01:04:15That should have been troubling us all along
01:04:18Why does only one of those nine cities
01:04:21Feel real to us
01:04:22And the other eight
01:04:23Feel like nothing but dirt
01:04:26The answer is uncomfortable
01:04:27Once you see it
01:04:29The whole time we have been asking
01:04:31Is the legend true?
01:04:33Did the war happen?
01:04:35Can we prove the song?
01:04:37We have quietly been making the song
01:04:39The measure of the place
01:04:41As though the hill
01:04:42Only mattered if it could be shown
01:04:44To match a poem
01:04:45As though a city were real
01:04:47Only once a story finally arrived
01:04:51To point at it
01:04:52But that has it exactly backwards
01:04:56The people in that burned city
01:04:58Did not live their lives
01:04:59In order to be true to a song
01:05:01That would not even be composed
01:05:03Until centuries after they were ash
01:05:05They lived because they were alive
01:05:08They wove their cloth
01:05:10And sank their storage jars
01:05:12And crowded behind their walls
01:05:14And died in their fire
01:05:16For reasons entirely their own
01:05:18Reasons that had nothing to do
01:05:20With Helen or Achilles or a horse
01:05:23And the eight cities around them
01:05:25Were no less real for being unsung
01:05:28Every one of those layers
01:05:30Held the same weight of lived life
01:05:32The same births and weddings
01:05:34And quarrels and deaths
01:05:35The same certainty
01:05:38While it stood
01:05:39Of being the whole world
01:05:41The poem did not make any of them real
01:05:44It only reached down much later
01:05:47And made one fragment of one of them famous
01:05:51And the hill itself
01:05:52Never knew the difference
01:05:54It rebuilt nine times
01:05:56Indifferent
01:05:57Patient
01:05:58Taking in each ending
01:06:00And offering its old bones up
01:06:02As the foundation for whatever came next
01:06:06It did not know it was holding
01:06:08The most famous city in the world
01:06:10It did not know that one of its burned layers
01:06:13Would set scholars arguing for a hundred years
01:06:16Or that a man with a spade
01:06:18Would one day tear through it
01:06:20Chasing a song
01:06:22It was a real place
01:06:23Doing the real and ancient work
01:06:25Of being a place
01:06:27For three thousand years
01:06:28Before the poem ever came looking for it
01:06:31The ground was true first
01:06:33The story arrived late
01:06:36And fastened itself the way stories do
01:06:38To something that was already there
01:06:40Turn it around
01:06:42And it changes everything
01:06:45We have been afraid that the place
01:06:47Might not live up to the poem
01:06:48But it is the poem that leans on the place
01:06:52And never the place on the poem
01:06:53The song borrowed its power
01:06:56From a real coast
01:06:57A real strait
01:06:58A real walled city that really burned
01:07:01And wove all of that hard true geography
01:07:04Into a story about grief
01:07:06And pride and loss
01:07:08Troy did not need Homer
01:07:11In order to have existed
01:07:12It existed
01:07:14And then
01:07:15A very long time afterward
01:07:17Homer needed Troy
01:07:19And once you stop demanding
01:07:21That the two collapse into each other
01:07:24The pressure goes out of the question
01:07:27The place is real
01:07:28And provable
01:07:30And patient
01:07:31And silent
01:07:32The story is unprovable
01:07:34And immortal
01:07:35And true in a way
01:07:37The ground will never once
01:07:39Be asked to confirm
01:07:40They do not need to be
01:07:42The same kind of true
01:07:44A real city burned on that hill
01:07:46And a deathless song
01:07:48Was sung about a city like it
01:07:50And the fact that we cannot
01:07:52Stitch the two together
01:07:53Whether with any certainty
01:07:54Is not a failure
01:07:57It may be the most honest thing
01:07:59About the whole story
01:08:00So perhaps the question was wrong
01:08:03From the very beginning
01:08:05Not was the legend real
01:08:06But why did we ever decide
01:08:09That the hill's reality
01:08:11Depended on the legend at all
01:08:14The city was true before the song
01:08:16And it would go on being true
01:08:18Long after the song is forgotten
01:08:20If the song is ever forgotten
01:08:22It never needed Homer
01:08:24It only needed to have been lived in
01:08:27And it was
01:08:28By people who are gone now
01:08:30Past all finding
01:08:31And whose silence is the last
01:08:34And the deepest thing
01:08:35The hill has left to give us
01:08:37And it is to that silence
01:08:39In the end
01:08:40That everything here
01:08:42Has quietly been returning
01:08:45Today the hill is quiet again
01:08:48The great trench still scars its side
01:08:51Healed over with grass
01:08:53And the careful diggers
01:08:55Who came after
01:08:55Have long since covered
01:08:57Their work and gone
01:08:58The visitors come and look
01:09:00And read the signs and leave
01:09:02And in the evening
01:09:03When they have gone
01:09:04The wind comes up off the straight
01:09:07The way it always has
01:09:08And moves through the grass
01:09:10On the empty mound
01:09:11And there is nothing there at all
01:09:13But a low brown rise
01:09:15Above a wide flat plain
01:09:17It is exactly where we began
01:09:20And it is keeping its silence
01:09:23The way it always was
01:09:25Everything we have talked about
01:09:27Is still under there
01:09:29Nine cities
01:09:30Stacked in the dark
01:09:32And somewhere in the upper middle of them
01:09:34The thin black band of a city
01:09:36That crowded its people
01:09:38Behind its walls and burned
01:09:39And around that one famous fire
01:09:43Eight are the worlds of people
01:09:45Who are gone now so completely
01:09:47That not even their names survive
01:09:49People who wove and traded
01:09:51And quarreled and loved
01:09:53And were certain
01:09:54Every one of them
01:09:55Of the ground beneath their feet
01:09:57The dust has settled back over all of it
01:10:00The hill holds them the way
01:10:03It has always held everything
01:10:05Without preference
01:10:06Without memory
01:10:07Without telling
01:10:09And the question we carried all this way
01:10:11The one that drove a man
01:10:13To take a poem for a map
01:10:15And tear a hill apart
01:10:17The hill simply will not answer
01:10:20It will tell you
01:10:21That a city stood here
01:10:22And that more than once
01:10:24A city died here
01:10:25Suddenly in fire
01:10:27It will tell you a real name
01:10:29Written in clay
01:10:30By a real empire
01:10:32That is almost the name in the song
01:10:35It will go that far
01:10:36And then it will hand you the rest of the way back
01:10:39And say nothing more
01:10:41Whether a queen was ever stolen
01:10:43Whether a thousand ships ever came
01:10:46Whether Achilles ever wept in a tent
01:10:48With the father of the man he had killed
01:10:50The hill does not know
01:10:52And it will not pretend to
01:10:55That part was never the grounds to keep
01:10:58It belongs to the song
01:10:59And the song will never tell either
01:11:02And perhaps
01:11:03That is how it should end
01:11:05Not with an answer
01:11:07Which would only have made the whole thing smaller
01:11:09But with a real hill
01:11:11And a real fire
01:11:12And a deathless song
01:11:14All of them true
01:11:16None of them quite reaching the others
01:11:18Held apart by three thousand years of silence
01:11:22That no spade is ever going to break
01:11:24The city is real
01:11:26And we cannot prove the war
01:11:28The song is immortal
01:11:30And we cannot find the horse
01:11:32And the people who could have settled it for us
01:11:36With a single sentence
01:11:37Are the one thing the hill will never give back
01:11:41They are gone
01:11:42Down into the layers
01:11:44Into the silence
01:11:45And the silence is not empty
01:11:48It is full of everything
01:11:50We are not allowed to know
01:11:52And that is where we will leave it
01:11:54You and I
01:11:56Standing on the quiet hill as the light goes
01:11:59Thank you for coming all this way down
01:12:01Through the layers with me
01:12:02All the way to the bottom
01:12:04Where the answers run out
01:12:06And the silence begins
01:12:09If the story stayed with you
01:12:11There is one quiet thing you can do
01:12:13To help make sure there is another one

01:12:24Or on whatever has been carrying my voice to you tonight
01:12:27It costs you nothing at all
01:12:29And it is the one small thing
01:12:32That keeps these stories being made
01:12:34And keeps them finding the next person
01:12:36Who needs a few hours alone with the past
01:12:39It matters more than you know
01:12:42Because there are other hills
01:12:44Other buried cities
01:12:46Other vanished names
01:12:48Other songs the ground can only ever half confirm
01:12:52There is always another silence somewhere
01:12:55Waiting to be sat with
01:12:57And another story the earth remembers in pieces
01:13:00And refuses to finish
01:13:02We will go and stand at the edge of the next one together
01:13:06Before long
01:13:07But for tonight
01:13:08The hill has said all that it is going to say
01:13:12The trench is grassed over
01:13:14The diggers are gone
01:13:16The visitors have left
01:13:17And the wind is moving through the empty grass
01:13:20Above nine buried cities
01:13:22And one famous unprovable fire
01:13:25The question stays
01:13:27Where it has always belonged
01:13:29Down there in the dark
01:13:31With the ground
01:13:32And not with us
01:13:33And the hill keeps it
01:13:35Patiently
01:13:36The way it has kept everything
01:13:38For as long as there has been a hill at all
01:13:42History
01:13:43Told with space to breathe
01:13:46Take care of yourself
01:13:47Wherever you are
01:13:49And we will stand at the edge
01:13:51Of the next quiet thing together
01:13:53Before very long
