00:00At Newcastle United in late September 1999, the two clubs were at opposite ends of the Premiership table.
00:06Leeds were in second place and in eight Premiership matches had lost just twice.
00:11Newcastle had dispensed with Ruudhullit as manager and although the club was still 19th in the league,
00:16they had improved under Bobby Robson and had thrashed Sheffield Wednesday 8-0 in their last match.
00:22Jonathan Woodgate was one of the many promising youngsters at Leeds who'd impressed observers during the early weeks of the
00:27season.
00:29Manager David O'Leary made two changes from the side that had beaten Middlesbrough 2-0 last time out.
00:34Gary Kelly replaced Danny Mills at right back and Eric Bakker was preferred to David Hopkin in midfield.
00:39Alan Smith was partnered up front by Michael Bridges.
00:46Despite that 8-0 hammering of Sheffield Wednesday, Bobby Robson made two changes to the Magpies starting XI.
00:52Spanish centre-back Marcelino made his third start following a £5m move from Mallorca.
00:58Whilst Jamie McLenn came into midfield for only his fourth start for the club.

01:07Two of the great northern heavyweights of the English Premier League go toe-to-toe.
01:12Second from top plays, second from bottom.
01:16Newcastle rejuvenated under new management, that of Bobby Robson.
01:19To the extent that they thrashed Sheffield Wednesday 8-0 last Sunday.
01:24With five for Alan Shearer.
01:27Their biggest win since beating Newport 13-0 back in 1946.
01:34But the here and now represents quite a challenge for Newcastle today.
01:39Leeds' last three games have produced 13 goals.
01:46Fourth game in charge for the 66-year-old Bobby Robson.
01:51Here's Shearer.
01:53Leaving into Radderby.
02:02Was, needless to say, a personal best by Alan Shearer six days ago.
02:10Now, here's Bridges.
02:12In behind Newcastle.
02:14And Michael Bridges is denied by a good save by Harper.
02:19What's worrying for Newcastle is just how straightforward it was for Leeds to split their defence.
02:26One pass, enough to do it.
02:36Michael Bridges, a former Sunderland striker.
02:45Ian Hart.
02:52Bounce, defeating Kitspire.
02:55Here's Batty.
03:09Solano.
03:12Attempted to find Dier.
03:18And Lucas Radderby limping.
03:22He does have persistent knee trouble.
03:26Has to play through the pain on many occasions.
03:35Kelly.
03:39Back up.
03:41And here's Alan Smith.
03:43Ball down.
03:46By Didier Domi.
03:50No way he was letting him get clear.
03:55And Barry Knight, the referee from Alpington and Kent,
03:58has reached for his pocket.
04:00Has reached for his pocket.
04:07Didier Domi booked.
04:09And Leeds with the free kick.
04:19Smith and Radderby waiting.
04:21Smith and Radderby waiting.
04:21This is Backer.
04:26Tight turn was Kitspire.
04:28And here's Dier.
04:30No, there was a foul.
04:32Whistle a little late in going.
04:40Rude Hullet departed after just five games of the season.
04:44Which yielded merely one point.
04:48Bobby Robson has picked up the baton to some effect so far.
04:53Started with a 1-0 defeat at Chelsea.
04:552-0 win at CSKA Sophia in the UEFA Cup.
04:58And then the eight goals against Sheffield Wednesday last weekend.
05:02And they host CSKA Sophia in the return leg of that UEFA Cup tie.
05:07On Thursday at St. James' Park.
05:13Warren Barton.
05:17Dier.
05:19Kitspire.
05:22Solano.
05:23There's Gary Speed.
05:26Back on the ground where he won a league championship with Leeds back in 1992.
05:34Batty.
05:36Backer.
05:40And again, Eric Backer.
05:42Into lots of space for Boya.
05:55Didn't he take it well?
05:58Barely broke his stride.
06:04And look at that for a chasm at the heart of the Newcastle defence.
06:13Backer on his full debut.
06:16Setting up Lee Boya for the opener.
06:27Comfortably the biggest crowd of the season so far here at Elland Road.
06:31In excess of 40,000 and the majority delighted.
06:37Batty.
06:39Backer.
06:46Bobby Robson acknowledges it's not going to be straightforward with Newcastle.
06:51There are many defects.
06:53Many faults that have been allowed to linger.
06:57And here's Michael Bridges for Leeds.
07:00And that is a very good save by Harper.
07:03Touching it against the frame of the goal.
07:08Rising drive from the one-time Sunderland striker.
07:12And a vital touch by Harper.
07:17Woodgate.
07:20Batty.
07:24Kelly.
07:27Cure.
07:42Cure.
07:43And Belgrade in Heronvein.
07:47Solano.
07:56Here's speed for Newcastle.
08:02Domi.
08:13Shearer.
08:14Spending a lot of time on that right-hand side.
08:18Solano.
08:21Just making sure that Nigel Martin's awake.
08:30Batty.
08:32Got it back.
08:33From Bowyer.
08:35Here's Cure.
08:39Shots raining in on Steve Harper's goal.
08:43Shea given a long-term casualty.
08:45Harper getting a run in the side.
08:47They've already tried John Karelsa and Tommy Wright this season.
08:56And Kitspires offside.
09:00Woodgate intervening.
09:01It's not actually going to matter.
09:05Flag was up very quickly against the Georgian.
09:13Given away by Kelly.
09:15Shearer.
09:17Backer cut across him.
09:20But it's play on with Gary Kelly.
09:28Speed.
09:31Bowyer.
09:32Who's been everywhere in this first period.
09:35Bridges.
09:38Smith.
09:40And Bridges.
09:44Glorious chance to make it 2-0.
09:51And some of Leeds football has been a delight to behold.
10:01And the referee is given a corner.
10:09Newcastle not too happy.
10:17The last two seasons.
10:19Leeds have finished 5th.
10:20And then 4th.
10:22They've made a good start this year.
10:242nd place.
10:25And that's an elastic catch.
10:27By Steve Harper.
10:29A man signed from CM Red Star.
10:31On a free transfer.
10:337 seasons ago.
10:34He's had to wait for his opportunities.
10:43Speed.
10:46Domi.
10:49Gets Byrus straight offside.
10:52So Newcastle will gladly accept the throw.
11:04McClain.
11:09He's being hassled.
11:11By Lee Bowyer.
11:12And then he claims he was fouled.
11:13By Lee Bowyer.
11:22Jamie McClain.
11:23Only 20 years of age.
11:24Newcastle Bourne.
11:29First joined the club at the age of 10.
11:36Jonathan Woodgate.
11:39Very poor.
11:40Straight to Dyer.
11:41Here's Shearer.
11:42Either side keeping the ball for very long at the moment.
11:45Bridges.
11:48Kelly.
11:49Just got enough on it.
11:57Backer.
12:01Batty first time.
12:03Harry Kuehl.
12:11Alan Smith leads the celebrations.
12:16Harry Kuehl with an object lesson in how to deal with an awkward bouncing ball.
12:24Popped up perfectly for him to head powerfully using some of the pace on the cross.
12:30Back and across Steve Harper.
12:35And Leeds have a bit of daylight now.
12:38They lead 2-0.
12:43Dyer.
12:50Barton.
12:55Radaby leaving it for Martin.
12:57Now, did Martin handle outside the area?
12:59Well, the linesman on the far side claims that he did.
13:04And Barry Knight is going across for a chat with him.
13:17Radaby was shielding it.
13:19Martin presumably called.
13:22Bundled his way through Ketspire.
13:26And used a hand when the ball was outside his area.
13:33And Nigel Martin is going to be cautioned by Barry Knight for that.
13:43David O'Leary.
13:45Trying to enjoy his 50th game in charge.
13:47Although, enjoyment is difficult, he says, when you're wrapped up in the midst of the heat of a Premier League
13:52battle.
13:54Derek Wright, the physio, escorting Ketspire off.
13:58For further treatment.
14:04So, Newcastle will take this free kick with only 10 men on the pitch.
14:08Three minutes to half-time.
14:17Solano.
14:18Shearer!
14:24That puts a different complexion on matters.
14:32Leeds will be disappointed with the amount of freedom afforded to Alan Shearer.
14:36Radaby was not tight enough to him.
14:45Only Manchester United have scored more goals in the Premier League than Newcastle.
14:49Here's bridges for Leeds, though.
14:52And he should have added one to the home side's tally.
15:01Released by the flick from Smith.
15:11Leeds have played the more incisive football.
15:14But Newcastle do have a hold in this game now, at last.
15:20And Radaby's gone down clutching his face after jumping with Shearer.
15:24And Barry Knight has blown the whistle.
15:27Eric Bakker has also got an injury problem.
15:31But it's Lucas Radaby, the...
15:34Leeds centre-back, who's in the most trouble.
15:38Caught by a swinging arm from Shearer.
15:43David Swift, the Leeds physiotherapist.
15:47Trying to restore Lucas Radaby to full working order.
15:53It takes a lot to get the South African going, but he's clearly angry.
15:57And having seen the replay, you can understand why.
16:07One captain at odds with the other.
16:20Speed.
16:22Dyer.
16:25The presence of Bakker enough to force the mistake.
16:46Shearer.
16:49Barton.
16:52There's the whistle.
16:55And it's tighter at half-time than it looked like it might be.
17:00Leeds leading by two goals to one.
17:02Lee Bowyer set them on their way.
17:05Harry Kewl added a second with an excellent header from an awkward bouncing cross by Batty.
17:10And then Shearer, three minutes before the break, with the header from Solano's free kick.
17:14Leeds lead by two goals to one.
17:17But this game is far from one at this stage.
17:20And the boos are for Shearer, for the swinging arm that caught the local hero, Radaby.
17:32Marcelino.
17:35Newcastle paid £5 million to bring him from Mallorca.
17:39It's hardly been a raging success so far.
17:46McClendon.
17:46Now of Kidderminster Harriers.
17:51Domi.
17:54Dyer.
17:57Now, Shearer.
17:582-2.
18:08A man who feeds on chances, who feasts on them.
18:12And all of a sudden, Newcastle have started to create some for him.
18:17Bobby Robson has worked tirelessly with him in training since taking over.
18:22Just tweaking his technique, altering his approach.
18:26Getting him to play, facing the opposition goal, rather than with his back to it.
18:32And how it's paying off.
18:33Five goals last weekend, and now two this.
18:46Leeds have lost a two-goal lead.
18:56Leary will doubtless put it down to inexperience.
19:05Down goes Shearer.
19:08Batty emerges with the ball.
19:12Eric Backer.
19:19Once again, any friends and a new vector, please contact the nearest children.
19:23Hart.
19:29Speed.
19:41Robinson.
19:43Now Barton.
19:52It was met by Radovy.
19:56Not quite the flow of the first half.
20:09David Batty.
20:14Bowyer.
20:17Here's Bridges!
20:24Leeds have got their lead back.
20:28Especially sweet for a former Sunderland player.
20:40Thirteen minutes remaining.
20:43There's never a bad time to score, but this is a particularly good one.
20:48And it was neatly taken by Michael Bridges.
20:53Scoring for the third consecutive Premier League match.
21:14Free kick.
21:17The outcome of the wrestling match involving Shearer.
21:26There's also going to be a yellow card for Gary Kelly.
21:38There's also going to be a yellow card for Gary Kelly.
21:45In by Solano for Goma.
21:49And what was Nigel Martin up to?
21:55The goalkeeper of his experience, going walkabout like that.
22:05This time it goes against Shearer.
22:12Ian Hart.
22:14Be a big win this for Leeds.
22:16Bearing in mind the loss of the two-goal lead.
22:18Here's Huckabee.
22:19Flags up.
22:24Darren Huckabee denied.
22:32Played in by fellow substitute Alfie Haaland.
22:37Paul Robinson.
22:39Across comes Woodgate.
22:44The ball deep in the west end.
22:48And hopes it'll take a while to retrieve, but it's come back pretty quickly.
22:54For Warren Barton to launch the long throw.
22:57And there's Robinson.
23:01Newcastle would have wished that to fall to Shearer.
23:18Next for Leeds is the return of their UEFA Cup tie against Partizan Belgrade here on Thursday.
23:26At this stage of the season, league points, very important, setting the tone for the campaign ahead.
23:32Trying to build on last season's fourth place.
23:38Batty.
23:42Barton.
23:45Charvet.
23:53Kewl.
23:56Barton's got back to face him.
23:59Here's Bridges.
24:02Charvet in the way for Newcastle.
24:05Maybe time for one last foray forward.
24:09Laurent Charvet.
24:11Robinson.
24:14Batty and Boyer swarming around in the midfield as they've done to such effect all afternoon long.
24:24Leeds emerge as winners.
24:27By the odd goal in five.
24:30Plenty of entertainment.
24:32Leeds establishing a two-goal lead through Boyer and Kewl.
24:35Shearer with a double made it 2-2.
24:37And the game was won 13 minutes from the end by a sweetly taken goal by Michael Bridges.
24:44Newcastle supporters travel home in defeat, but not in despair.
24:49It's finished.
24:50Leeds three.
24:51Newcastle two.
24:53Leeds finished the season in third place and qualified for the lucrative Champions League.
24:58David O'Leary's young team did top the table for a large part of the season,
25:02and the performances of Woodgate, Smith and Bridges were particularly impressive.
25:06The team ended up with 69 points, just four behind second-placed Arsenal.
25:12Newcastle managed to survive in the Premiership, and much of the credit must go to Bobby Robson,
25:16whose appointments seemed to galvanise the club as a whole.
25:19They pulled well clear of the drop zone and eventually finished...
25:22Thank you, Edith.
