00:00The fall. The bar blurs. String lights become stars. Niall's special bottles become blackboard chalk. And I see her, not
00:10as she is, but as she was. Before Kampala learned her name. Kiboga Primary School. P.5, she raises her
00:20hand. The teacher smiles.
00:23Namatta will be a leader, they said. Discipline. Respect. Hard work. Everyone respected the child version of this woman. Golden
00:34hour. Elders greet her. Our daughter. Head up. Books tight. She doesn't know that respect is rented, not owned. That
00:46it expires when you make a mistake the community cannot digest. Mother, my daughter will work in an office.
00:53In Kampala. Her mother believed. That belief was heavy. Heavier than the bag she would later carry to Kampala. Global
01:03coaches. 6 a.m. Small bag. Big dream. She leaves Kiboga for Kampala. She thinks she is going to become
01:14a secretary. She doesn't know that the secrets in every secretary are better understood by their employers.
01:21That line she will later say. She hasn't lived it yet. Kampala doesn't welcome. It swallows. Tall buildings. Bota bodas
01:31that don't stop. Landlords who want three months up front. She stands with her bag, overwhelmed. The city is already
01:40changing her perspective. She gets a job. Reception.
01:44Just file papers. Just file papers, they said. But filing papers means the boss's eyes never leave. It means late
01:53nights to finish work. It means understanding that some offices manufacture environments that intoxicated your own adorations.
02:01She leaves before they fire her. But the rent doesn't leave. Day one on the street with a box. Termination
02:09letter inside. No salary. No home. She calls home. Her mother says, come back. Her village says, we heard.
02:21And just like that, disowned. Disorganized. Disoriented. Demotivated. The four Ds they never teach in P.5.
02:30She sits in a single room in Katanga, trying to sew. Yarn tangled.
02:37Kitenge tangled. Life tangled.
02:40Yarn and combat to be noticed by the many who wonder for crisp, rip, clean, neat precision beyond competition and
02:46reasoning with what resonates with their visions.
02:48She is trying to make something neat. She is trying to make something neat in a world that calls her
02:51dirty. She is trying to be noticed not as a body, but as a brain.
02:56Second night. I return. Not with a notebook this time. Not with one million. With empty hands. Bar Kalolo, dusk.
03:08String lights again.
03:09The Rolex sign says 5k.
03:13Nyama Choma.
03:15Cold Nile special.
03:17She will be inside.
03:19And this time, I will not ask her to leave the roads.
03:23I will ask her how the road feels under her feet.
03:32I will ask her to leave the roads.
03:32I will ask her to leave the roads.
03:32I will ask her to leave the roads.
03:32I will ask her to leave the roads.
