00:54Well, this week is the maiden voyage of the classic segment officially happening every other Thursday here on the channel,
01:00so I figured it was appropriate to cover something that was also a first in wrestling.
01:04How about the first ever WCW Super Brawl from the Bayfront Arena in St. Petersburg, Florida on May 19, 1991,
01:12but don't tell that to Kane.
01:14This show was nominated by Todd Harris on Patreon. Todd, thank you so much for nominating this show.
01:19Like I said, this is the inaugural Super Brawl in WCW's history.
01:23They'd keep this show going until the company's demise.
01:26This show featured a lot of good, a fair amount of bad and silly,
01:30and also ended up being Ric Flair's last real moment on top of the company for several years,
01:35but that's a story for a little bit later in this review.
01:37I know we're not doing these classic reviews on Saturdays anymore, but I just had to show this clip.
01:42Super Saturday? What is it? I don't even know what it's called. What is it called?
01:45Super Brawl Saturday.

01:47Quick question as I observe the thumbnail the network uses for this show, as well as the opening graphic package
01:53they have here.
01:54Why do they use the old Imperial Japanese flag that was retired in 1945 after World War II was over?
02:00Seems kind of weird.
02:01I know that, you know, visually, that flag is a lot more interesting than the current Japanese flag,
02:06and I get the idea that in the storyline that they have for the main event,
02:09it's, oh, those evil Japanese guys are going to try and steal our world championships if they're bad,
02:14but it's just weird.
02:16You couldn't use just the actual normal Japanese flag.
02:196,000 people in attendance in St. Petersburg on that night.
02:22The show garnered a 1.04 buy rate.
02:25Jim Ross and Dutthoreau, that day, are on commentary at ringside.
02:29You're opening contests for the vacant U.S. Tag Team Championships,
02:32as the fabulous Freebirds, Michael Hayes and Jimmy Jam Garvin,
02:36who are accompanied by Diamond Dallas Page on a headset mic,
02:39and Big Daddy Dink, a.k.a. Oliver Humperdinck,
02:42take on the Young Pistols, that's Steve Armstrong and Tracy Smothers.
02:46These two teams had been feuding for a while up to this point,
02:48and they would keep fighting as the months went on,
02:51but at this point, they're fighting for those vacant U.S. tag titles.
02:54The Steiner brothers were the U.S. tag champs,
02:56and back in March, they'd won the World Tag Team Championships,
03:00and so they'd vacate the lesser tag belts,
03:02which is why these two top contending teams are fighting for the vacant belts.
03:05Early in the match, the Freebirds get Steve on the outside.
03:08They whip him into the steps, but Steve stops himself,
03:11takes out Dink with a clothesline, then hits Michael and Jimmy Jam.
03:14Big Daddy Dink trips up Steve soon after,
03:16and that brings out Brad Armstrong,
03:18the older brother of Steve, of the Young Pistols,
03:20he's getting ready to fight even the odds.
03:22The referee ejects both Brad and Big Daddy Dink,
03:25and the heels are pissed.
03:26All I was thinking was, where the hell did he go?
03:28He was there at the entrance, I didn't notice he even left,
03:31and what happened?
03:32Anyway, great tag team offense,
03:35and great quickness by the Pistols here.
03:37Hayes leapfrogs over Tracy Smothers,
03:38which causes Tracy to just take his own bump
03:41and fly over the top rope, despite not even being touched.
03:43That is some amazing momentum.
03:44That's straight up Lucha Libre shit right there.
03:46The Freebirds take their liberties with Smothers on the outside.
03:49Hayes and Garvin take their turns getting heat on Tracy
03:52until Smothers hits a superkick onto Garvin.
03:54Hot tag to Steve.
03:56We're about to get a double-missile dropkick from the Pistols here,
03:58but both the Freebirds give them the nope treatment.
04:01Tracy then hits a double crossbite.
04:02The camera almost misses.
04:04Steve with one of his own on the outside.
04:05The Pistols hit their double-team finish onto Michael Hayes,
04:08who is the legal man,
04:10but instead of covering him right away,
04:11they decide to hit Jimmy Jam with the move as well.
04:13And when they hit Jimmy Jam with it,
04:15the referee's caught in the crossfire.
04:17He's taken out.
04:18In the first match of the night, we get a referee bump.
04:20It's crazy.
04:21Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere,
04:22was it some kind of bird?
04:24Species of bird that doesn't exist anymore?
04:26It's Fantasia.
04:27The Freebirds, for weeks,
04:28have been alluding to a third member joining their ranks,
04:31and this is what they're talking about.
04:33Fantasia.
04:33The bird, apparently.
04:34He's the bird man.
04:35He beats up the Young Pistols,
04:37and he helps the Freebirds win the match
04:39and become the new U.S. tag team champions.
04:42I'm going to give this one two-and-a-half stars.
04:44I think it was a really exciting opening matchup,
04:46great tag team wrestling,
04:48great story being told with a very interesting finish.
04:50Turns out that Fantasia,
04:52first of all,
04:53they changed the name from Fantasia to Bad Street
04:55in order to avoid legal issues with Disney,
04:57but the man under the mask happened to be Brad Armstrong,
05:00the very man we saw earlier in the match
05:02try and stick up for the Young Pistols.
05:04He ran to the back,
05:05got into his gimmick with feathers and all,
05:07and then he helped out the Freebirds win the match.
05:10And they never made any kind of illusion
05:11to the fact that he was Brad under there.
05:13They made him as two separate people,
05:14but very interesting that Brad was there twice
05:16in a single match,
05:17both to help out the Pistols
05:18and help out the Freebirds.
05:20Up next, Ricky Morton taking on dangerous Danny Spivey.
05:23Morton, of course,
05:24won half of the Rock and Roll Express.
05:26However, he's been a singles guy
05:27for the last couple of months
05:28after Robert Gibson hurt his knee.
05:30Meanwhile, Spivey is just a few months back in the company.
05:33He was gone for the bulk of 1990 from WCW.
05:36He left the company over a pay dispute
05:38and also having some heat with the Road Warriors at the time.
05:41But he's back here.
05:42It's a pretty cut and dry squash match.
05:43The match begins with Morton full of vim and vigor,
05:46but Spivey cuts him off with a DDT.
05:48Lots of big power moves by Spivey here,
05:50the future Waylon Mercy.
05:52We get a bit of a hope spot
05:53when Ricky tries to roll up Spivey,
05:55but Danny kicks out.
05:56We get a bit of a botch here
05:57when Ricky comes off the ropes
05:58and there's supposed to be something happening here
06:00where they just kind of bump into each other.
06:01Spivey recovers with a powerbomb,
06:03foot on the chest to pin.
06:05And Morton, of course,
06:06has got to look strong on the feet,
06:07so he kind of gets that shoulder up
06:08just as the referee counts three.
06:10So he looks strong in the feet, I guess.
06:12I'm going to give this one half a star out of four.
06:15You know, like I said,
06:15pretty cut and dry squash match.
06:17You know, executed pretty well until the very end.
06:20Not a whole lot of meat on the bones beyond that.
06:22But things would get interesting for Ricky
06:24the next month
06:25because Ricky Morton would turn his back
06:27on the returning Robert Gibson
06:28to join the York Foundation,
06:30changing his name to Richard Morton.
06:32You can hear about that match
06:34and a lot of other things
06:35that this show is planting seeds for
06:36in my Great American Bash 91 review,
06:39which I'll put right here
06:40in the corner of your screen.
06:41We go to the ramp
06:42where Tony Schiavone is with the Z-Man,
06:44Tom Zink and Missy Hyatt.
06:46The story with Missy is
06:47she's been trying to become
06:48a backstage interviewer,
06:49so she wants to be the first woman
06:50to get an interview in the locker room
06:52with the men and everything.
06:53So they show a clip from Wrestle War
06:55back in February
06:56where she tried it
06:57and she was cut off by Stan Hansen,
06:59could yell that by him.
07:00And so Missy,
07:01apparently there was a fan poll
07:02that asked should Missy go back
07:04to the dressing room
07:05and try to get another interview.
07:06And so it was two to one
07:07in favor of her saying,
07:08yes, she should go back
07:09and interview some wrestlers.
07:11And we'll see where that goes
07:12later in the show.
07:13Our next match is Tommy Rich,
07:14a former NWA World's champion,
07:16taking on Nikita Koloff.
07:18Also, Rich would become
07:19a future York Foundation member,
07:20but he wasn't Thomas Rich just yet.
07:23Koloff is fresh off his stint
07:25in Herb Abrams' UWF.
07:26He returned to WCW in February
07:28at Wrestle War
07:29and began a feud with Lex Luger
07:31over his United States Championship.
07:33It's just a match of size
07:35versus speed here.
07:36Very similar to the last match
07:37in a lot of respect.
07:38Koloff works Rich in the corner,
07:40but Rich fires back.
07:41Hits Nikita with a big elbow,
07:42but he goes for it again
07:43and misses it.
07:44Dusty sounds like an auctioneer
07:45at one point in commentary.
07:47He went to the well one time,
07:48the first time he got away with it.
07:49You know what I mean?
07:50The devil made me do it
07:51the first time,
07:51second time I've done it on my own.
07:52It does not always work.
07:54Rich regains the advantage
07:55with some corner punches,
07:56goes for a crossbody off the ropes,
07:58but Koloff ducks.
07:59Rush and Sickle
08:00and Koloff wins the match.
08:02I'm going to give this one
08:03one star out of four.
08:04This match had a little more fire
08:06than the previous squash match,
08:07which I guess is appropriate
08:08given Tommy Rich's nickname.
08:10But you know,
08:10it was still very similar
08:11that the big heel guy won.
08:13Tony Skiavo is back on the ramp
08:14and he's interviewing a debuting
08:16Johnny B. Badd
08:17who's accompanied by his manager,
08:19Theodore Long.
08:20The two cut a promo on PN News
08:22right off the bat,
08:22so I guess he's the first victim
08:24of Johnny B. Badd here
08:25before they walk up the ramp.
08:26This is actually Mark Merrow's
08:28first appearance
08:28as Johnny B. Badd,
08:29but he had previously shown up
08:31in WCW as a job guy
08:33for Sid Vicious
08:33literally like two weeks or so,
08:36maybe two and a half weeks
08:37before this show.
08:39As Mark Merrow,
08:40then he's gone for a couple weeks,
08:41comes back as Johnny B. Badd.
08:43What a huge turnaround.
08:44Up next,
08:45the natural Dustin Rhodes
08:46takes on Terrence Taylor,
08:47who's accompanied by
08:48Alexandra York,
08:49Mr. Hughes,
08:50and the newly elected
08:51board of directors
08:52for the York Foundation
08:53for the first quarter of 1991.
08:55Just four dudes in suits
08:57on stage with them
08:58as they make their way
08:58into the ring.
08:59I love this gimmick
09:01of Terry Taylor,
09:01the computerized man
09:02of the 1990s,
09:04and I say that
09:04without a shred of irony.
09:06It is like such a great gimmick
09:07for the time.
09:08Yeah, looking back now,
09:09it's cheesy to think
09:10of like someone punching numbers
09:12into a supercomputer
09:12that will, you know,
09:14strategize and map out
09:15how to win a wrestling match,
09:17but back then,
09:18how many average people knew
09:19what computers were capable of?
09:20So it's like,
09:21yeah, maybe it is feasible,
09:22but it's still very,
09:23it's just an out there gimmick,
09:24but it's like,
09:25it's so good with the times
09:26when like computers were,
09:27personal computers
09:28were still kind of
09:29a relatively new thing,
09:30and so I just think
09:31it was great.
09:31Dustin Rhodes is undefeated
09:33in WCW since debuting
09:35earlier in the year.
09:36He has refused an invitation
09:37to join the York Foundation,
09:39which was prompted
09:40this match here tonight.
09:41I do find it kind of ironic
09:42that Rhodes was feuding
09:44with a stable
09:44that was led by a woman
09:45who would eventually become
09:47his wife and the mother
09:48of his child.
09:48Funny how wrestling works
09:49sometimes.
09:50Terry Taylor powders
09:51out of the ring early on
09:52to check what the computer says.
09:53He does this a lot.
09:54The bulk of the first part
09:55of the match
09:56is him just like going outside
09:57and conferring with
09:58Alexandra York,
09:59who's looking at her computer.
10:00I would have killed
10:01to know what kind of banter
10:03those two would have had
10:04about the computer
10:05when they're on the outside
10:06like,
10:06uh, you know,
10:07uh, computations,
10:08uh, algorithms,
10:10vectors.
10:10We get some wrestling
10:11between the two.
10:12Dustin works the arm,
10:13but Taylor gets the ropes,
10:14powders again.
10:15Like I said,
10:16a lot of the match here,
10:17the first part of it at least,
10:18is all Taylor
10:18powdering out of the ring.
10:19Taylor goes for a suplex,
10:21but Rhodes reverses it.
10:22He goes for a crossbody,
10:23but Taylor ducks,
10:24and Rhodes rolls out
10:25to the ring.
10:26Taylor guillotines him
10:27on the top rope
10:28off the ramp,
10:28then suplexes him
10:29back into the ring,
10:30using the bottom rope
10:31as kind of a platform
10:32to bounce off of.
10:34Dusty on commentary
10:35says Taylor's taking
10:35the breather,
10:36which,
10:36according to him,
10:37was designed
10:37by the computer.
10:39Taylor goes for an axe handle,
10:40but Dustin puts up the boot.
10:42Big comeback,
10:42including a clothesline
10:43that sees Taylor
10:44practically land inside out.
10:46Rhodes hits the bulldog.
10:47It's going for the win,
10:48but Alexandra York
10:49gets on the apron
10:49with the distraction.
10:51Taylor and Hughes
10:51now working together
10:52in tandem.
10:53Hughes puts on the black glove
10:55and goes to punch
10:55Dustin's lights out,
10:56but Dustin ducks,
10:57so Hughes hits Taylor instead.
11:00Rhodes goes for the cover,
11:01wins,
11:01and pieces on out of there.
11:02I give this one
11:03two stars out of four.
11:04The match started out
11:05kind of really slow,
11:06but then, you know,
11:07by the end,
11:07it got very interesting,
11:08and the story of Dustin
11:09fighting the odds here,
11:10not just Taylor,
11:10but also Alexandra York
11:12and Mr. Hughes near the end
11:14made for an exciting finish.
11:15In our next match,
11:16Black Bart takes on Big Josh.
11:18He's accompanied by bears.
11:20Bears walking on their hind legs.

11:23with bears at his disposal?
11:25Of course,
11:26Big Josh is also known
11:27as Matt Bourne,
11:28also known as the first
11:30doing the clown
11:30a few years after this.
11:31Matt's been on this
11:33classic review segment
11:34a few different times
11:34in a few different incarnations,
11:36let's just say.
11:37The match is pretty much
11:37a big brawl,
11:38scrappy the entire time.
11:40It's punches,
11:40it's eye rakes,
11:41it's a fight.
11:42Black Bart goes for some
11:43clotheslines near the end,
11:44but Josh keeps taking them down
11:46with like single-arm takedowns.
11:47It's kind of a cool counter.
11:48He hits an axe handle
11:49followed by a big butt drop
11:50to win.
11:51That's Dusty and,
11:52what Dusty and JR call it.
11:54Their words,

11:55I give it one star to four.
11:57It was a big,
11:57ugly brawl,
11:58but the real stars
11:59of this match
11:59were the bears.
12:01And then after the match,
12:02the best part is
12:02there's no music playing.
12:03Josh just wins the match.
12:05He just looks at the camera
12:05and goes,

12:22whose face is about 70% chew.
12:24Hansen calls out Dustin Rhodes.
12:26I guess he just missed the fact

12:29like five minutes earlier.
12:30And so then Hansen leaves.
12:31Heyman yells some more
12:33into the camera.

12:36That was the segment.

13:04on his shoulder.
13:05He just keeps saying,

13:08The fans are booing
13:09the shit out of this
13:09and it's just wonderful.
13:11Oz finally appears on stage.
13:13It's Kevin Nash
13:14in a big robe and mask.
13:15He was the master blaster
13:17literally a week before this
13:18and now he is Oz
13:20and you hear his voice
13:21on the loudspeaker say,

13:23who I truly am.
13:25Like,
13:25Kevin Nash's voice
13:26is just not intimidating.
13:28It's a cool voice,
13:29I like his voice,
13:30but it's not fear-inducing.
13:32Whatever vibe

13:58I give this one

14:02This was incredible
14:03and don't bother

14:05Picking up where we left off
14:06with Missy Hyatt,
14:07we see her backstage
14:08in the dressing room
14:09trying to interview somebody.
14:10She gets a word
14:10with Terry Taylor
14:11and then wants to go
14:12into the shower
14:12to see if the Z-Man's
14:13in there,
14:14but instead it's
14:15ol' Stan Hansen
14:16in his underwear.
14:16He still has a bunch
14:17of chew in his mouth
14:18and he yells at Missy again.
14:19Oh, poor Missy.
14:21Not again.
14:21Womp womp.
14:22Up next is the taped fist match
14:24as Flyin' Brian Pillman
14:25takes on Barry Windham.
14:27It's a grudge match
14:28between these two.
14:29These guys have been feuding
14:29for a while to this point.
14:31The whole gimmick is
14:31their fists are heavily taped,
14:33which allows them to hit harder
14:35without hurting their hands.
14:36Pillman gets a hot start.
14:38Windham cuts him off.
14:39Barry goes to the top rope,
14:40but Pillman hits him
14:41with a drop kick.
14:41Windham falls to the outside.
14:43Pillman dives to the outside
14:44with a fist.
14:45Great opening salvo
14:46for Pillman here.
14:47Windham's bleeding.
14:48He pulls Pillman
14:49into the ring post, though.
14:50Back at the ramp area,
14:52Windham drops Pillman
14:53face first onto the guardrail.
14:55Both men are now
14:56just bleeding profusely
14:57as the match goes on.
14:58We're just getting
14:58a back-and-forth war
14:59between these two.
15:00It's really captivating stuff here.
15:02Pillman with some loud chops
15:04to Barry's chest.
15:05Barry hits the ropes,

15:06knock noggins on the rebound.
15:08Pillman goes to the top rope.
15:10Windham shoves the ref
15:11out of the way
15:11so he can hit a huge low blow
15:13into Pillman.

15:14the best superplex

15:17wins the match dirty.
15:19I'm going to give it
15:19two and a half stars.
15:20Very fast-paced match
15:21with a lot of action
15:22crammed in.
15:23These two would keep
15:24on fighting,
15:25leading to a loser-leaves
15:26WCW match later,
15:28which Pillman would lose,
15:29but he would come back
15:30literally weeks later
15:32as the yellow dog
15:33under a mask,
15:34and the whole thing was,
15:35oh, no one can prove
15:36it's Brian Pillman.
15:37We get a lot of live mic issues
15:39with DDP
15:39as he's on stage
15:40getting ready for his
15:41talk show segment,
15:42The Diamond Mine.

16:35all these guys
16:36you're seeing
16:37for the first time
16:38with these incarnations,
16:39and it's crazy to think
16:40how much they would
16:41go on to just
16:42shape the business
16:43in the mid to late
16:4490s and beyond.
16:46Sid Vicious takes on

16:50billed as a stretcher match.
16:52It's important to know

17:28at Sid because this was
17:29Sid's final match
17:31in WCW for a while.
17:32We wouldn't be seeing him
17:33in the company
17:33for several years
17:34after this point.
17:35But yeah, so Gang
17:37and Sullivan beat up
17:38Elie Gante for a bit
17:39until he finally wakes up
17:41and chases them off.
17:42We'll see Elie Gante
17:44and one-man gang
17:45fight Great American Bash
17:46and you just gotta watch
17:47my review to see
17:48what I thought about that match.
17:49But this one
17:49I'm gonna give zero stars
17:51because it was short,
17:52it was bad,
17:53and the finish went against
17:54what they were advertising
17:55with this stretcher match.
17:56So, what happened?
17:57Time for the Thunder Doom Cage match
17:59as Ron Simmons

18:04of the tag team
18:05known as Doom.
18:06They lost the tag titles
18:07in February
18:07and they broke up
18:09with Teddy Long,
18:10their manager,
18:11siding with Butch Reed.
18:12Ron Simmons
18:13becoming a face
18:14in the process.
18:15And throughout the weeks
18:16and months,
18:17you know,
18:17Reed and Long
18:18were working together.
18:19They were cheating
18:20to win their matches.
18:21So this one here
18:22is in a cage
18:22and Theodore Long
18:23is in his own
18:24little shark cage
18:25suspended above the ring
18:26and we all know
18:27that's a surefire way
18:28to keep any interference
18:29from happening
18:30from the guy
18:31in the shark cage.
18:32Simmons starts out strong
18:33but he eats the steel cage
18:34when Reed ducks
18:35the shoulder tackle.
18:36Reed uses the cage
18:37as a weapon.
18:38Ron begins to fire back
18:39but Reed pulls him
18:40into the cage again
18:40cutting him off.
18:41It's all Reed
18:42for the bulk of this match.
18:44Every time Simmons
18:44tries to mount a comeback,
18:46Reed cuts him off.
18:46We get a big shoulder tackle
18:48off the top rope
18:48by Butch Reed.
18:50Simmons is saved
18:50by a foot on the ropes
18:51which I thought
18:52wouldn't count
18:53in a cage match
18:54but okay.
18:55We get a double down.
18:56At that point,
18:57Long throws a chain
18:58into the ring
18:58from his miniature cage
18:59proving once again
19:00the stipulation
19:01has never worked
19:02in doing what
19:03it's entirely designed
19:04to do.
19:05Anyway,
19:06Simmons and Reed
19:07fight for the chain.
19:08Reed gets it first.
19:09He goes for a chain attack
19:10but Simmons ducks,
19:11hits him with the
19:12spine buster
19:13to win the match
19:14so Simmons wins
19:15the day here
19:16and now it's kind of
19:17the maiden voyage
19:18on his big,
19:18you know,
19:19burgeoning singles career
19:20where he would eventually,
19:21much later,
19:22become the world champion
19:23but this is kind of
19:24the beginning of that.
19:25I'm going to give this one
19:25three stars out of four.
19:26I really enjoyed this match.
19:28It was hard hitting.
19:29It was physical.
19:30I've said it before
19:31in this review
19:31and I'll say it again.
19:32I love the story here
19:33in this matchup
19:34the way that Simmons
19:35just keeps trying
19:35to fight back
19:36and Reed keeps
19:36cutting them off
19:37and he eventually
19:38gets the breaks
19:39needed to eventually
19:40defeat his former
19:41tag team partner.
19:42This is good stuff.

20:25the way they list this
20:26is that the
20:27tag team reign
20:29for the Freebirds
20:29there is technically
20:30negative six days long
20:32which is just
20:33absolutely insane
20:34but that's what happens
20:36when you run
20:36live events
20:37parallel to
20:38taped events
20:39and title changes
20:40like that happen
20:41before the thing
20:42my mind was blown
20:43when I read that.
20:44The match begins
20:45with Rick and Lex
20:46in the ring.
20:46Rick's able to
20:47outwrestle Luger
20:48early on
20:48and bring the power
20:49with a German suplex
20:50and a Steiner line.
20:51Luger comes right back
20:52with a huge close on
20:53that turns Rick
20:54inside out
20:55followed by
20:55a military press.
20:56Sting comes into
20:57the rings
20:58at House of Fire
20:58he misses the splash
21:00in the corner
21:00Scott's tagged in
21:01he's got his time to shine
21:03Luger and Scott
21:04are working together now
21:05Luger with a power slam
21:06goes for the torture rack
21:07but Scott counters
21:08with a Russian leg sweep.
21:10There's a lot of
21:10these big impact
21:11high impact moves
21:12from all four guys
21:13here in this matchup
21:14and I'm giving you
21:15the very very abridged
21:17Cliff Notes version here.
21:18Rick with a blind tag
21:20he hits Luger
21:20with the bulldog
21:21he's totally unaware
21:22that Rick got tagged in
21:23Sting hits Rick
21:24with a missile dropkick
21:25from behind
21:26a huge move by Sting
21:27and then there's
21:28this kind of like
21:29brief moment
21:29where everything
21:29kind of comes to a halt
21:30because Sting's like
21:31oh wait
21:32I don't know
21:32if he was saying
21:33that there was a tag
21:34like JR was trying
21:35to say Sting
21:36tried to tag in
21:37but that's not true
21:38at all because
21:38he was nowhere near
21:40Lex Luger
21:41during any of this exchange
21:43so I think he was
21:43I think he might have
21:44been confused
21:45in storyline
21:46over the blind tag
21:47that the Steiners had
21:48I don't know
21:49but it did kind of
21:50bring things to a halt
21:51for a split second
21:51anyway we get back
21:52on track
21:53we get a double down
21:54between Rick and Lex
21:55Sting and Scott tag in
21:57and they're throwing punches
21:58no more of this
21:59friendly rivalry crap
22:00it's all just
22:00they're throwing hands
22:01at this point
22:01Sting reverses a tombstone
22:02with one of his own
22:03Luger and Rick
22:04are fighting on the outside
22:05the referees out with them
22:07out comes Nikita Koloff
22:08lurking in the shadows
22:09with the chain
22:10wrapped around his arm
22:11he's gonna deck Luger
22:12with the chain
22:13but Sting pushes Lex
22:14out of the way
22:15takes the bullet
22:16and so then Scott
22:17Pinsting to retain
22:19the championships
22:20I'm gonna give this one
22:22four stars out of four
22:23even though there was
22:23at one point near the end
22:25where things kind of
22:25there's confusion
22:26I don't think it took away
22:27too much from the match
22:28I think it was a great match
22:30great story of the face
22:31versus face
22:31how are they gonna
22:32overcome this issue
22:33the finish I think
22:35was a very smart way
22:36of going about it
22:36because not only did it
22:38help protect all four guys
22:41the Steiners don't get
22:42any heel heat for retaining
22:43and the Lex and Sting
22:45look good in defeat
22:46like they didn't get
22:47beat legitimately
22:48and not only that
22:49but it also helps
22:50transition
22:51like it blends
22:52a couple of feuds
22:53together between
22:53Volkov
22:54I'm sorry
22:54Koloff
22:55and Luger
22:56and then it turns
22:58into Koloff
22:58and Sting
22:59as we see
23:00in the post match
23:01fracas between
23:02Sting and Koloff
23:04on the outside
23:04but yeah
23:05I think it was a very
23:06good match
23:06one of the better
23:07matches of the show
23:08and yeah
23:09so they have this
23:09big fight in the
23:10backstage area
23:11between Sting and Koloff
23:12and then that's gonna
23:13lead to a Russian
23:14chain match
23:14between the two
23:16at the Great American Bash
23:17TV Championship match
23:19in your semi-main
23:20as Arn Anderson
23:21defends against
23:22beautiful Bobby Eaton
23:24back in 1990
23:25for the first time
23:26since 1979
23:27Bobby Eaton
23:28became a singles
23:28competitor
23:29after Jim Cornette
23:30and Stan Lane
23:31left WCW
23:32the Midnight Express
23:33was no more
23:34after a few months
23:36Eaton turned babyface
23:37and challenged
23:38Anderson for the
23:39championship
23:39which brings us
23:40to this match
23:41Anderson by the way
23:42is on his third reign
23:43with the TV championship
23:44the one he had
23:45previously was
23:46well over a year long
23:47this reign here
23:48he's about five months
23:49into it
23:50Eaton has Anderson
23:51selling early on
23:52with some big punches
23:53and knees
23:53they fight in the corner
23:55Eaton makes his way
23:56up top
23:56and Arn throws him
23:57face first
23:58onto the ramp
23:58Eaton recovers though
24:00with a backdrop
24:00onto Arn
24:01on the ramp
24:01another one
24:02into the ring
24:03follows it up
24:03with an axe handle
24:04Arn with a cheap
24:05shot on Bobby
24:06wraps his leg
24:07around the ring post
24:08Arn working the leg
24:09pretty aggressively
24:09for the remainder
24:10of this match
24:11but Eaton is able
24:12to fight back
24:12driving Anderson
24:13face first
24:14into each turnbuckle
24:15pad in one corner
24:16I think Matt Hardy
24:17would make that spot

24:57even though it's
24:58a relatively short reign
24:59in the grand scheme
25:00of things
25:00still a landmark victory
25:01for Eaton
25:02really helps legitimize
25:03him as a singles guy
25:04after years of being
25:05stigmatized as a tag
25:06team wrestler
25:07I'm going to give
25:08this match three stars
25:09out of four
25:09I think it was
25:10great technical
25:11wrestling on display
25:12and just tremendous
25:13selling like I said
25:14by Arn
25:15especially Arn
25:16but also Bobby as well
25:17Bobby made like the
25:18pain look so real
25:19legitimate
25:19but Arn's selling
25:21over the right hands
25:21was just great
25:22that was a big story
25:23they told
25:23not just the work
25:24with the leg
25:24but also Arn's left
25:26versus Bobby's right
25:27as something JR
25:28explained
25:28and kind of
25:29did some exposition
25:30in the beginning
25:31of the match
25:32and they played that
25:33really well
25:33yeah very entertaining
25:34match with a very
25:35satisfying finish
25:36of Eaton going over
25:37clean to become
25:37the champion
25:39main event time
25:40for the WCW
25:41world championship
25:42that's a very
25:42important distinction
25:43by the way
25:43as Ric Flair defends
25:45against Tatsumi
25:46Fujinami
25:47back in March
25:48at the WCW
25:49New Japan Super
25:50Show in Tokyo
25:51at the Egg Dome
25:51the IWGP champion
25:53Fujinami beat the
25:54NWA champion
25:55Ric Flair for the
25:57NWA championship
25:58so Tatsumi became
25:59a dual champion
26:00however in America
26:02they were still
26:02treating the NWA
26:04and WCW titles
26:05like two separate
26:06championships
26:07so their whole
26:08line of reasoning
26:09was oh Flair
26:10lost the match
26:11by disqualification
26:12or he won the match
26:13by disqualification
26:14something where
26:15basically he didn't
26:15lose any championships
26:17they kind of negated
26:18the whole NWA
26:19stuff
26:19and they said
26:20Flair was still
26:21the WCW champion
26:22and now in this
26:23rematch
26:23Flair is looking
26:24for revenge
26:25and for American
26:27pride or whatever
26:28they're trying to
26:28paint like the
26:29Japanese wrestler
26:30as you know
26:31evil foreigner
26:32trying to take
26:32the world championship
26:33back to Japan
26:34and it's weird
26:36because Flair is
26:37still predominantly
26:38a heel at this
26:39point in his career
26:39and they're painting
26:40him as a baby face
26:42so in Japan
26:43their perspective
26:44was it was
26:45title for title
26:46NWA championship
26:47versus WCW
26:47championship
26:48where WCW
26:49just said
26:50that's for the
26:50WCW title
26:51so the NWA
26:51that's kind of like
26:52they're not
26:52really acknowledging
26:53it at that point
26:54Fujinami comes out
26:55with an entourage
26:56of geishas
26:57Flair comes out
26:58flanked by his
26:59butler and his
27:00cook
27:00totally the same
27:01thing
27:01in fact I'm
27:02willing to bet
27:02that some of
27:02the extras
27:03on stage with
27:03Flair were also
27:05like some of
27:05the board members
27:06from the York
27:06Foundation
27:07earlier in the
27:07show
27:08we have two
27:08referees in
27:09this matchup
27:10Tiger Hattori
27:10is the primary
27:12official in this
27:12matchup
27:13whereas Bill
27:14Alfonso
27:14representing the
27:15good old US of

27:17secondary official
27:18in case anything
27:18goes awry
