00:00When global businesses talk about expanding into the American market,
00:03a common misconception is that the United States operates traditional,
00:08fenced-off, free trade zones, like those found in other parts of the world.
00:12If you go looking for a single, massive, tax-exempt district at the border, you won't find it.
00:18Instead, the United States relies on a sophisticated,
00:22nationwide network known as Foreign Trade Zones, or FTZs,
00:25authorized by federal law and overseen by the Foreign Trade Zones Board
00:30and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
00:32These zones are strategically scattered across every single U.S. state in Puerto Rico.
00:38Rather than being isolated territories,
00:40they are designated sites located in or adjacent to official U.S. ports of entry.
00:46This includes major international airports, maritime seaports,
00:50and industrial parks and commercial hubs from Los Angeles and Houston to Chicago,
00:54Atlanta, and New York.
00:56These zones are split into two primary categories.
01:00General-purpose zones, which usually consist of public industrial parks
01:04or port warehouses meant to serve multiple companies,
01:07and special-purpose subzones, which are tailored private facilities
01:11dedicated to specific corporate manufacturing or assembly operations,
01:15like automotive plants or massive oil refineries.
01:18Why does this infrastructure matter?
01:20Because merchandise inside an FTZ is legally considered outside U.S. customs territory.
01:26This allows businesses to store, assemble, manufacture, or re-export foreign goods
01:32without paying upfront federal tariffs or duties
01:34until those products officially enter the domestic stream of commerce.
01:38By deferring, reducing, or entirely eliminating these customs costs,
01:44FTZs keep domestic manufacturing competitive and supply chains fluid.
01:48So, where are they?
01:49They aren't hidden away in a remote corner of the country.
01:52They are operating quietly inside almost every major logistics hub,
01:57powering international trade right beneath our noses.
02:00Finally, remember that everything we discussed today
02:03is for educational purposes only and does not constitute financial advice.
02:08Good luck to everyone, and see you in the next video.
