The pilum was a distinctive Roman legionary weapon. Surviving 1st-century examples from Roman Britain show a pyramidal iron head connected to a long slender iron shank and wooden shaft.

According to the British Museum, the slender shank was designed to buckle on impact, making the weapon difficult for an enemy to reuse. Roman legionaries could throw the pila before advancing into close combat with sword and shield.
