00:00Before he was hurtling DBs, trucking linebackers, or launching absolute nukes for the Bills,
00:05Josh Allen lived a shockingly quiet life on a farm.
00:09And despite being a freak athlete with a rocket for an arm,
00:12he was overlooked by every Division I college program in the country.
00:16This is the story of Josh Allen and how he went from zero-star recruit to NFL superstar.
00:21And his story starts on a 3,000-acre cotton farm in the small town of Firebaugh, California.
00:27Josh Allen was born on May 21, 1996, to LeVon and Joel Allen as the second of four children.
00:33And his hometown, Firebaugh, was tiny, with a population of just 8,600 people.
00:38But without that upbringing, Josh wouldn't be the player he is today.
00:41I think that's why Josh developed into the player that he did,
00:45because he didn't have a lot of the distractions that he would have had living in a larger town or
00:50a big city.
00:50In 2017, he told ESPN that his dad worked his tail off to provide for our family.
00:55If I'm half the man he is, I'll be alright in this world.
00:58So, Allen followed his dad's lead.
01:00This included hacking weeds, digging ditches, and moving irrigation pipes.
01:04We didn't grow up where we could just hop on our bikes and go to a buddy's house.
01:09Like, me and my siblings, we had to figure out how to have fun on the farm.
01:13He'd also help his mother at their family restaurant, Farmer's Daughter.
01:16But, as you might have guessed, Josh kept himself busy with other hobbies outside the farm life.
01:21He played every sport in the book. Football, baseball, basketball.
01:25He even swam in the summer.
01:26And he was great at every sport he played.
01:29He led the Fireball High School basketball team in scoring and could throw a 90-mile-per-hour fastball.
01:34But because he played so many sports and was busy with practices and the farm,
01:39he didn't have time to attend high-profile football camps to get more exposure.
01:43And it didn't help that Fireball was far from a football powerhouse.
01:47In fact, their rival school, Mendota, always destroyed them when they played.
01:51But that would all change once Josh Allen arrived, well, and grew.
01:56Because when he started high school, Allen was listed at a skinny 6'2", 180 pounds.
02:01And he didn't even start until his junior year.
02:04However, those final two years, he balled out.
02:07His junior year included 26 touchdowns, leading his team to a 7-3 record.
02:12And they beat their rival, Mendota, for the first time in over 10 years.
02:16Then, his senior year was even more impressive.
02:18Because Allen threw 33 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions, with the best record in school history.
02:24He ended his high school career throwing for 5,200 yards and 59 touchdowns.
02:29In fact, Allen is the only player in Fireball High School history to have his number retired.
02:34And completely turning around the fortunes of a historically terrible high school program,
02:38had to have some weight in college recruiting, right?
02:41Nope, not at all.
02:43His competition was considered weak.
02:44So, Allen received zero Division I offers, despite his stellar high school career.
02:50He did receive a walk-on option from San Diego State, but this came with no guarantee that
02:55he would get playing time.
02:56But even as a zero-star recruit, he still confidently said,
03:00I'm not stopping until I hit the NFL.
03:02Now, Josh Allen could have stopped playing football then and there.
03:05But a man by the name of Ernie Rodriguez kept Allen on the field.
03:09He was the offensive coordinator at Readley College and was the one coach who actually believed
03:14in Allen's ability on the football field.
03:16He saw something in the Fireball High School star, outside of him being ranked top 4 in
03:21the nation in diversified crop production.
03:23So, Josh attended the JUCO Readley College, which was just one hour away from Fireball.
03:28But even junior college started rough.
03:31Allen started his J.C. career as a backup for the first three games.
03:35And after growing two inches, now standing at 6'5", 210 pounds, he got his chance.
03:40And he showed out.
03:42In his very first collegiate game, he ran for four touchdowns.
03:45And in just 10 games, he had 2,055 yards and 26 touchdowns.
03:51This season was one for the record books, because the team averaged 452.2 yards per game
03:57and was the 9th-ranked JUCO offense in all of California.
04:00And Allen was a huge part of that, because Readley put up 285.3 passing yards per game
04:06and 39.4 points per game, which was 10th in the state.
04:10This success led Allen to have even greater motivation to play Division I football.
04:14He was ready, but no one was calling.
04:17So, he had to do it himself.
04:18Allen sent emails to every possible college in the nation.
04:22From Alabama to Washington, he held out hope.
04:24His messages looked like this, even linking his football highlights.
04:28Plus, now he was even bigger.
04:29Still 6'5", but now weighing 238 pounds.
04:33However, just two colleges came back with offers.
04:35Eastern Michigan and Wyoming.
04:37And here's where it got weird.
04:38Because Wyoming had scouted Readley College for one of Allen's teammates.
04:42And they didn't offer Allen a scholarship until they found out they lost another prospect they wanted.
04:48Eric Dungy, who went to Syracuse.
04:50Then, Eastern Michigan rescinded their offer after Allen visited Wyoming.
04:54But that's okay, because Wyoming coach Craig Bull was the only FBS coach in the entire nation
05:00that came to directly visit Josh Allen in California.
05:03Simply telling his dad,
05:04We went all around the country, and there's only one quarterback we want.
05:08And that's your son.
05:09He's going to be the face of our program.
05:11Still, Allen held out hope for his favorite team growing up.
05:14Fresno State, the team he'd dreamed of playing for since he was 8 years old.
05:18But Fresno State went with another option.
05:20So, after they got commitment from the smaller, 175-pound Chase and Virgil,
05:25Allen emailed them, saying,
05:266'1"?
05:27170?
05:28To which they responded,
05:29Yeah, we got our guy.
05:31Good luck.
05:31So, off to Wyoming, Allen went.
05:33With an even bigger chip on his shoulder.
05:35But this marked the beginning of an even more challenging chapter of his football career.
05:40In 2015, Josh started his career at Wyoming as the backup behind Cameron Kaufman,
05:45an Indiana graduate transfer.
05:47But it didn't take long for Allen to get his chance.
05:49Because in the 2015 opener, Kaufman injured his knee.
05:52So, Josh started the second game of the season.
05:55Ironically, against the team that passed on him, Eastern Michigan.
05:58But in just the first quarter, a 24-yard run turned into a disaster.
06:03Allen's collarbone shattered into seven different pieces.
06:06Quickly ending his 2015 season as a medical redshirt after just 13 plays.
06:12However, this extra time actually helped.
06:14Because he took that time to not only study the playbook, but to get faster and stronger.
06:19But the mental part of the game is always the most important factor.
06:22Which is also why this video is brought to you by BetterHelp.
06:26And during football season, it's easy to lose track of what matters most.
06:30Yourself.
06:30We're also concerned with whether or not our team will get a win this week.
06:34Or what player to start in fantasy football.
06:37Or maybe you're just a Jets fan.
06:39And for that, I'm sorry.
06:40But there's really no better way to treat yourself than therapy.
06:43Therapy can have so many positive impacts on your life.

07:32In 2016, Allen was the Cowboys' day one starter.
07:35And this is the season he put college football on notice.
07:39This included one of the biggest wins in Wyoming history.
07:42Beating the 13th ranked Boise State 30-28 early in the season.
07:46And with two big wins against top 25 teams, the Cowboys put up 35.9 points per game.
07:52Good for second in the Mountain West and 25th in the entire nation.
07:56Allen threw for 3,203 yards and 36 total touchdowns.
08:0128 passing, 7 rushing, and 1 receiving touchdown.
08:05However, it wasn't all great.
08:07He also threw 15 interceptions and completed just 56% of his passes that year.
08:12But it didn't matter.
08:13Because Wyoming took home the Mountain West Conference regular season title and played San
08:18Diego State for the conference championship, falling 27-24.
08:22This season was a major stepping stone for Josh.
08:25So big that he even considered taking the next big leap to the NFL.
08:28He talked with multiple people to make a decision.
08:31This included his dad, head coach Craig Boll, and even Carson Wentz.
08:35But Boll ultimately convinced him by saying,
08:37Do you want to get drafted or do you want a career?
08:40So Josh remained with the Cowboys with a new purpose.
08:43That purpose was solely to prepare for a future in the NFL.
08:47And in 2017, many people, including Adam Schefter, said Josh Allen will be the number one pick in the NFL
08:54draft next year.
08:55But it didn't start the way you would expect.
08:57With a young roster that lost four all-conference players to the NFL, the Cowboys lost two out of their
09:03first three games.
09:04Keep in mind, those losses were to FBS powerhouses Iowa and Oregon.
09:09And Allen wasn't looking great.
09:11He started the season with just seven touchdowns to six picks.
09:15He was also held to under 100 passing yards in back-to-back games against Oregon and Hawaii.
09:20But the season did improve.
09:22He finished the season throwing ten more touchdowns and zero interceptions.
09:26Wyoming finished 8-5, and Allen was invited to the Manning Passing Academy that June.
09:31But still, there were tons of questions surrounding Josh as he was set to enter the NFL.
09:36Many thought Allen was too raw and too inaccurate to last in the league.
09:40He drew comparisons to everyone from John Elway to Jamarcus Russell.
09:44The arguments piled up.
09:46Inaccurate.
09:47All I care about is his inaccuracy.
09:49He completed 56% of his passes, which is not very good.
09:53Didn't step up against good teams.
09:55Throwing the ball 70 miles per hour isn't important.
09:58How often is he going to need a set to throw the ball 90 yards?
10:01He might throw, what, one Hail Mary per year?
10:03This is unimportant to me.
10:05And a stacked quarterback class in 2018 made it difficult to place Allen.
10:09But if we look at his 2018 draft profile, many could argue it was right on the money.
10:14A round one pick, a 6.4 prospect grade, and said to become a good starter within two years.
10:20So, how did those first two years go?
10:22The Buffalo Bills took Allen with the seventh overall pick.
10:25They traded up from 12th to get him, as they had an up-and-down experience with Tyrod Taylor
10:30from 2015 to 2017.
10:32However, Allen was not named a starter at the beginning of his rookie season.
10:35But it wouldn't take long.
10:37During the season opener against Baltimore, then-starter Nathan Peterman posted a 0.0 passer
10:43rating with five picks in the first half.
10:46So, Allen was asked to step up.
10:48In his first NFL action ever, on September 9th, 2018, Allen had 74 passing yards, but
10:53they lost, 47-3.
10:55Then, the next week, he was asked to start.
10:58In Allen's 2018 rookie season, he was 5-6 as a starter.
11:02And just like the record, Allen showed flashes of great play, but also some horrible decision-making.
11:08He ended 2018 with more interceptions than passing touchdowns, but also had eight rushing
11:13TDs.
11:14For analysts, this was almost spot-on with their predictions.
11:18Flashes of greatness, but overall inconsistent and a project quarterback.
11:22The Bills didn't make the playoffs, and they ended Allen's rookie year with a 6-10 record,
11:27which was worse than their record in 2017.
11:30So, there was nowhere to go but up.
11:32The next season, not only did the Bills flip their record to 10-6, Allen made massive strides,
11:38and the numbers prove it.
11:393,089 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns, 9 rushing TDs, and just 9 interceptions, as
11:46he improved his completion percentage by 6%.
11:49But, the most important part, the Bills made the playoffs.
11:52They took on the Texans in the wildcard round.
11:55But, a back-and-forth battle would end in an epic overtime loss, despite starting the game
12:00up 16-0, and Allen throwing for 264 yards.
12:04Remember that 2018 draft profile?
12:06Well, he did become a good starter within two years, and this was just the beginning.
12:10Because, not only did Josh Allen start to understand the NFL game within two years, he was about
12:15to take the biggest leap of his young career.
12:182020 brought tons of expectations.
12:20Not only did the playoff performance against Houston bring hope, the Bills also acquired
12:25Stefan Diggs from the Vikings as a playmaker to help Allen.
12:28When I anticipated coming here, I knew Josh Allen was a good quarterback.
12:32And 2020 started hot.
12:34The very first game of the year, against the Jets, Allen had his first 300-yard passing
12:39game.
12:39He went for 312 yards, two passing touchdowns, a rushing TD, and a 72% completion percentage.
12:46Oh, and the Bills won, 27-17.
12:49Then, it only got better.
12:51The very next week, Allen threw for 417 yards and four touchdowns against Miami.
12:56And the way he did it was even more impressive, as he had this 46-yard pass to win the
13:01game
13:01in the fourth quarter.
13:02The next week, he had his third straight 300-plus-yard passing game against the Rams, to go with another
13:08four touchdowns.
13:09He actually became the first player in NFL history to have more than one 400-yard, three-touchdown
13:14game without a pick in a season.
13:16And this was just halfway through the year.
13:18The Bills were also becoming one of the best teams in the NFL, finishing the regular season
13:23with a 13-3 record and an AFC East title, their first since 1995.
13:28And Allen was a huge part of that.
13:30He finished the regular season with 4,544 passing yards, a Bills single-season record, and 37
13:37passing touchdowns to just 10 picks.
13:39He also had eight rushing touchdowns.
13:41And because of his stellar play, he became a household name.
13:45Not only did he become a pro bowler, he also placed second in MVP voting and was second-team
13:50All-Pro.
13:512020 brought more success than the Bills had seen in decades.
13:55Because for the first time since 1993, they went all the way to the AFC Championship game
14:00after beating Indianapolis and Baltimore in the playoffs.
14:03The 2020 AFC Championship was rough.
14:06Playing the Chiefs, Kansas City's defense was smothering, including this late-game interception
14:11on Allen to seal it.
14:12It was the first red zone pick of Allen's career.
14:14Despite this disappointing loss to win the season, this was Allen's one and only interception
14:19of the playoffs, and he increased his completion percentage by 12% from the previous postseason.
14:24He also became the first Bills player to win AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors at least
14:29three times in one season, doing so four times.
14:32It was now abundantly clear that the Bills found the face of their franchise, so they had to make
14:37sure he was there for the long haul.
14:40On August 6, 2021, Allen signed a six-year, $258 million contract extension with the Bills,
14:46then making him the second highest-paid NFL player in the league at $43 million a year,
14:51and it included a then-record $150 million guaranteed.
14:56This money's been awarded, but I gotta go out there and continue to earn it.
15:00Now the money was there, and it was time for Josh to prove the Bills made the right decision
15:05by taking them to the next level.
15:07And in 2021, he played like a superstar.
15:10In Week 2 against Miami, he passed 10,000 passing yards in his career.
15:15In Week 5 against Kansas City, he passed Jim Kelly for the most touchdown passes in Bills'
15:20history through his first four seasons, 82 to Kelly's 81, and there were still 11 weeks
15:25left in his fourth season.
15:27Despite finishing the regular season 11-6, the Bills took home their second straight AFC
15:32East title.
15:33Allen had 4,407 passing yards, 36 passing touchdowns, and a career-high 409 completions,
15:40and they would run into a familiar opponent.
15:42But first, the Bills played the first perfect offensive game against the Patriots, beating New
15:48England in the wildcard round, 47-17, with a touchdown on every single offensive possession.
15:54And Allen had five touchdown passes, which led them to another meeting with Kansas City
15:59in the divisional round.
16:00And this game was an instant classic.
16:03The back-and-forth battle ended regulation with a 13-second field goal drive by the Chiefs,
16:08sending it to overtime.
16:09But this is where it got controversial, because Kansas City won the coin toss, immediately scored,
16:14winning 42-36, and Josh Allen never got to touch the ball.
16:21Josh Allen was incredible.
16:23They lost, but they didn't deserve to lose.
16:25This gave way to a new rule that was introduced in the 2023 postseason, appropriately nicknamed
16:31the Josh Allen Rule, giving the second team the opportunity to match if the first team scores.
16:36Despite this controversial end to a season, Allen set the highest passer rating in a single
16:41postseason in 2021 with 149.0.
16:45So, now the question became, could Josh Allen keep getting better?
16:49The answer is yes, because in 2022, he just kept breaking records.
16:54Allen led the league in total air yards with 2,607, and in week five, had the longest pass
17:00play in Bills franchise history, with a 98-yard touchdown pass to Gabe Davis, which was part
17:10of a 424-yard, four-touchdown performance against the Steelers.
17:14The Bills finished that season 13-3, winning their third straight division title.
17:19Allen finished the season with 4,283 passing yards, 35 passing touchdowns, and seven rushing
17:25TDs, and after the emotional recovery of DeMar Hamlin following his medical emergency in
17:30week 17, Buffalo had all the motivation they needed leading into the playoffs, and Josh
17:35Allen continued to roll.
17:37The Bills beat Miami in the wildcard game, 34-31, with 352 yards and three touchdowns from
17:44Allen.
17:44But then, a snowy divisional round matchup with Cincinnati ended their Super Bowl dreams.
17:49Now, the narrative around Josh Allen was whether or not he could ever get over the hump in
17:53the playoffs, and unfortunately, the negative vibes carried over into the start of the 2023
18:02season.
18:03Not only did they fall week one to the Jets, who had Zach Wilson take over after Aaron
18:08Rodgers tore his Achilles, but Allen also threw three picks.
18:11But Allen was able to steady the ship, finishing strong, with 4,306 passing yards, 29 passing
18:18touchdowns, and the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback ever, with 15.
18:22He broke Kyler Murray's record with the most games in a season with both a passing and rushing
18:27touchdown with 11.
18:28In addition, Allen became the only player in NFL history to have four straight seasons
18:33with over 40 total touchdowns, and helped Buffalo tie a franchise record for most consecutive
18:38AFC titles with four, something they hadn't done since 1991.
18:42But all of this didn't matter without playoff success, and the Bills fans were starting to
18:47become restless.
18:48So, Allen started the playoff campaign with a stellar performance against the Steelers
18:53in the wildcard round, including this 52-yard house call.
18:56But all roads in the AFC lead to one team, the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes, who
19:02the Bills would face in the divisional round, this time at home for the first time in Allen's
19:06career.
19:07But despite Josh accounting for all three of Buffalo's touchdowns, they lost in the divisional
19:12round for the third straight season.
19:15Sucks.
19:16Losing sucks.
19:18And after this, many were convinced the Bills' championship window was officially closed.
19:23And the 2024 offseason only made that noise louder.
19:26The departure of many of the Bills' key pieces over the years, most notably Stefan Diggs, marked
19:31a new era in Buffalo.
19:33But one thing remains the same, and that's Josh Allen leading the charge.
19:37He started the first month of 2024 with seven touchdowns and no interceptions, continuing
19:42to show that with him at the helm, anything is possible.
19:45And while people continue to doubt his greatness, even being named the most overrated player
19:50in the league in an anonymous poll by his peers, he continues to silence the haters with elite
19:58quarterback play, as the Bills are well on their way to another division title, and Allen
20:02is once again an MVP candidate, and at the end of the day, he's doing pretty damn well
20:07for a farmer from Fireball.
