00:24and it shows a man using his AirPods to scan a book in front of him.
00:28The devices could be announced as soon as next month.
00:30It's a risky moment for Apple's AirPods line, with $12 billion in potential annual revenue on the line.
00:37And camera-enabled wearables are already infamous thanks to Meta's smart glasses.
00:42Between men harassing women on the street and uploading that footage to social media,
00:46and also bigger concerns over the use of facial recognition in the future,
00:51the glasses have gained a creepy reputation very quickly.
00:55Now, some public places are banning their use.
00:58If Apple's new AirPods with cameras got anything like that reputation,
01:02then it would be a disaster for the product line.
01:04People today wear AirPods in places like gyms, where cameras just aren't expected to be.
01:09But Apple's device does have a key difference with its camera
01:13that could stop the device from being labeled pervert pods.
01:17The camera is anticipated to work the same way that visual intelligence does on the iPhone already.
01:23With that, the camera only takes a brief capture to understand what it's looking at,
01:28but you don't get to save the video or the image.
01:30So that would mean you wouldn't be able to use these AirPods to, say, record somebody in the street.
01:36And I think that's an important distinction,
01:37and a key principle that I think Apple should keep to when it's considering AI devices in future.
01:43Next year, Apple is expected to launch its own smart glasses to compete with Meta's Ray-Bans.
01:48And according to Bloomberg's reporting, the company is still deliberating
01:52whether or not to make it possible for those glasses to film people.
01:56I think Apple should err on the side of caution and not being creepy.
