01:49It was simply there, complete, from the first second, and it kept arriving. The second thing wrong with

02:03being fired at that range. There was a flat ripping sound in the middle distance. There was something above
02:10all of it that shrieked rather than whistled. He could not separate the layers. He could not count
02:17them. Counting them was the entire job. For two and a half hours he lay in the bottom of that

02:24in the rain and failed to do the one thing he was there to do. And then, at twenty minutes
02:31to eight,
02:32it stopped. Not faded. Stopped. And through the gray light in front of him, a wall of white smoke
02:40began climbing out of the ground along the whole visible front. He knew what that meant. Every man
02:48in that trench knew what that meant. The guns lift and the smoke goes down when the infantry is about
02:56to
02:56walk. So he did the one thing four months of training and four months of fear had prepared
03:03him to do. He passed the word back. These are the stories of the men of First Canadian Army.

03:24end of this. The word he passed went up through Grenadier Regiment 1051, one of the units holding
03:31the forest edge for the German 84th Infantry Division under General Major Heinz Fiebig. That division
03:40had been rebuilt from almost nothing after being destroyed at Falaise the previous summer. It was thin,
03:47it was young, and it had spent the winter listening westward at the largest force a Canadian officer
03:53had ever commanded. General Harry Crerar's first Canadian army, on the ration strength, stood at more
04:00than 470,000 men. Now, here is what makes that morning worth 40 minutes of your time, and it is
04:09not the size of the bombardment. It is that this was not unusual. Go through German reporting from the
04:16sectors opposite the Canadians across the whole campaign in northwest Europe, from the Normandy
04:22Bocage, to the Scheldt, to the Rhineland, and you find the same complaint surfacing again and again
04:29in different words. The noise ahead of a Canadian attack could not be read. Not that it was frightening,
04:35not that it was loud. That it could not be interpreted by men whose profession was interpreting it.
04:41And I want to be careful here, because there is an obvious answer sitting right in front of us,
04:46and the obvious answer is wrong. The obvious answer is volume. More guns, more shells, an army with a
04:54factory behind it simply drowning the other side. But volume is the easiest thing in the world for a
05:00trained ear to read. A big barrage tells you a big attack is coming. A sentry who hears overwhelming fire
05:06has not been confused. He has been informed. Loudness is a message, and it is a message the German army
05:13had
05:13been receiving and correctly decoding since 1916. Something else was happening in front of the
05:19Canadian sector. Something that took a professional listener and made him unreliable, then made him
05:25hesitant, and finally made him worse than useless to the men behind him. Working out what that was is
05:31going to take us back through seven months, three countries, and one very old idea. And it starts a long
05:40way from the Reichswald, in a wheat field south of Kall, in the summer of 1944, at a moment when
05:47this same
05:48contest was running in exactly the opposite direction. The Germans were winning the war of sound. They were
05:56winning it badly, and they were winning it with a weapon that was designed from the first sketch to be
06:02heard. The number that shows how badly they were winning is one of the most disturbing statistics of the
06:09entire campaign in the West, and almost nobody outside the artillery ever quotes it. The 20th of July 1944.
06:18A wheat field on the lower slope of Verrier Ridge, south of Kall, in a rainstorm heavy enough to ground
06:26the aircraft. An infantry platoon commander of the 2nd Canadian Division, 23 years old and four weeks in
06:34France, is lying flat in the wheat doing the only useful thing left to him. He is counting. He is
06:41counting
06:42because he has been taught that if you can hold the interval between the noise and the impact, and if
06:47you
06:48can hold the bearing of the noise, you can send something back that a gunner can work with. A direction,
06:54a rough
06:55range, anything. So he presses his cheek into the mud and he counts. And what he is trying to measure
07:01is a sound that
07:03arrives as six separate howls stacked on top of each other, from a weapon he cannot see, sighted on ground
07:10he cannot observe, fired by men who have already measured the exact patch of wheat he is lying in.
07:16He gets nothing. There is nothing to get. That sound had a name in the Canadian and British armies.
07:23Moaning Minnie. Screaming Mimi. Men who went through Normandy and lived another 60 years would still
07:30describe it before anything else. That was not an accident of engineering. The Nebelwerfer's rockets
07:36were thin walled and spin stabilized, and in flight they shrieked. The Germans knew that. They had known
07:42it since the first firings. That shriek was not a side effect of the design. It was part of the
07:48delivery.
07:49The German army had built a weapon that put explosive on the ground and put terror into the ear at
07:54the same
07:54time, and it worked so well that the men on the receiving end named it before they learned to fight
07:59it. Now the numbers, and stay with these because they are the reason this part of the story exists.
08:06A German infantry division in Normandy fielded 57 81 mm mortars and up to 20 of the heavier 120 mm
08:14type.
08:15Nebelwerfer regiments ran to 54 projectors each, and in the Kahn sector they were available on the scale
08:23of roughly one regiment per division. Whatever else the German army west of the Seine was short of that
08:29summer, and it was short of nearly everything, it was not short of mortar bombs. And by the end of
08:37July
08:371944, 70% of every British and Canadian casualty in Normandy was being caused by mortars and rocket
08:46projectors alone. Sit with that figure for a second. Not the 88. Not the Tiger. Not the sniper in the
08:54church tower. Not the machine gun in the hedge. Seven out of every ten men hit in that campaign
09:01were hit by something dropped on them from a weapon nobody in their army could see, from behind a
09:07slope, fired by a crew that would be gone before anyone worked out where they had been. That was the
09:14German method, and it was elegant. Mortars and projectors were dug in on reverse slopes where no
09:21Allied observer could look at them. Observers sat forward on the crests. Before a battle, a few rounds were
09:28spent registering the exact tracks, crossroads, gaps, and hedgerow gates that attacking troops would have
09:36to use. Then, they waited. When the attack came, the crews were firing at numbers written on a card,
09:44not at anything they could see. The whole system was built on knowing the ground and being invisible.
09:52To beat it, you had to find it. And in the summer of 1944, the Canadian and British armies could
09:59not
10:00reliably find it. Counter-battery work against artillery was a mature science with its own staff
10:07and its own machinery. Counter-mortar was the poor relation, run on a skeleton and borrowing whatever
10:14time it could get on the survey units, the flash spotters, and the air photograph interpreters.
10:21Here is how completely the Germans owned the sound of that battlefield. Gunners of the 4th Field
10:27Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, came into possession of a German rocket projector, intact,
10:33along with its rockets. After weeks of being hammered by these things, the temptation was obvious,
10:38and they took it. They got the projector into action and sent a salvo back the way it had come.
10:43The reply arrived almost immediately, and it arrived accurately. Because the Germans had
10:49registered that position before they abandoned it. They had left the weapon behind, and they had left
10:53the map data in place, and they had simply waited to see whether anyone would be tempted. Canadian
10:59gunners were killed standing beside a captured German weapon that was still, in every way that
11:04mattered, working for the other side. Think about what that tells you. The German army in Normandy did not
11:10merely dominate the sound of the battlefield. It dominated the sound of its own losses. It had
11:15reached a level of confidence where a discarded projector was still a trap, because the enemy's
11:20curiosity was itself a predictable noise. So keep the man from the Reichswald in your mind, the sentry in
11:27the outpost trench with his helmet off, straining to classify something he could not classify.
11:32In the summer of 1944, that man was Canadian. He was lying in wheat outside Cannes, counting a sound,
11:39getting nothing, and dying of it in numbers that reached seven out of every ten.
11:44Which brings us to the part of this that genuinely does not make sense. The army being beaten by
11:49sound in Normandy was the same army that had invented the industrial method for beating sound in the
11:54first place. Not adopted it. Not been issued it. Invented the working version of it, in a French field,
12:0227 years before that platoon commander lay down in the wheat. The Canadians already had the answer.
12:08They had been carrying it since 1917. So why, in July of 1944, was it doing them no good whatsoever?
12:17The 9th of April, 1917. A dugout behind the Canadian Corps front at Vimy Ridge,
12:24and a Canadian officer named Andrew McNaughton is looking at a strip of photographic film.
12:31There is a line drawn on that film by an oscillograph, an instrument so delicate that most gunners of
12:38that era considered it useless in the field. Mud, cold, and vibration were supposed to finish it
12:45inside a week. McNaughton had them running anyway, wired to a row of microphones strung out across the
12:53front at surveyed intervals. Here is what happens on that strip. A German gun fires, somewhere behind
13:01the ridge, invisible. The pressure wave reaches the first microphone, then the second, then the third,
13:08each one a fraction of a second later than the last. Six traces, six timings, six small differences.
13:17Men at a plotting table turn those differences into two lines that cross on a map, and that crossing
13:24point is a gun. In good conditions, the whole sequence, from the report to the map reference,
13:31could be done in about 3 minutes, and the position was accurate to somewhere between 25 and 100 yards.
13:39That is close enough to kill with heavy howitzers. McNaughton did not invent this idea. The British had
13:46sound ranging sections in France before the Canadians touched the problem, and he built his team around
13:52men like William Bragg, Lucien Bull, Harold Hemming, and a young scientist named Charles Darwin,
14:00grandson of the one everybody has heard of. What the Canadian Corps did was different and more
14:07important. It took a laboratory curiosity and made it a reliable industrial process, run to a schedule,
14:15feeding a machine that killed batteries on a timetable. Between the 20th of March and the 9th of April,
14:21that team plotted very nearly every German battery behind Vimy Ridge. When the Canadians attacked,
14:2983% of the German guns on that ridge had already been neutralized. Now understand what had actually
14:36been built there, because it is the hinge of this entire story. It was not a listening device. It was
14:44a
14:44translation machine. It converted noise into numbers. For the entire history of warfare up to that dugout,
14:53sound had been a warning and nothing more. Noise told you that something was happening somewhere over
14:59there. It did not tell you where. McNaughton's people broke that rule permanently, and the Canadian Army
15:07never forgot it, because the man who ran that office went on to command the Canadian Army itself for the
15:14first four years of the next war. So return to the question we left hanging. That apparatus still
15:21existed in 1944. 1st and 2nd Survey Regiments, Royal Canadian Artillery, each carrying flash-spotting
15:30troops, sound-ranging troops, survey troops, and calibration troops. The 2nd Survey Regiment went to
15:37Normandy with 2nd Canadian Corps in June, and stayed to the end of the war. The machine was there.
15:44So why were 7 out of 10 casualties still coming from weapons nobody could find? Two reasons, and both of
15:52them are about the instrument being tuned to the wrong music. The first is physical. Sound-ranging
15:59was designed against guns. A field gun makes a hard, high-pressure report that travels for miles and
16:06produces a clean, sharp wavefront. Exactly the signature the microphones and the film were built to capture.
16:13A mortar does not do that. A mortar makes a dull cough at short range, close to the ground, buried
16:20inside the general racket of a battlefield. The apparatus that could find a German battery at 8 miles
16:26was close to death against a mortar at 1500 yards. The second reason is organizational, and it is the
16:33one that got men killed. Counter-battery work had its own staff, its own office, and its own authority.
16:39Counter-mortar had almost none of that. It was run off the corner of somebody's desk, borrowing time
16:46from the survey units and the photograph interpreters, competing for attention with an established
16:51profession that had been doing the job since the last war. So the Canadians rebuilt it, not with a
16:58wonder weapon, with organization, and with cable. Picture what that actually looked like on the ground in
17:04Normandy. A sound-ranging sergeant, somewhere in his twenties, walking a hedgerow line with a survey
17:09party, setting microphone posts at measured intervals and running the wire back by hand.
17:14He is not shooting at anybody. He is making a battlefield measurable. Every post has to be surveyed
17:21onto the map, or the whole thing produces confident, precise, useless answers. And alongside that
17:27came something newer. In late September 1944, 175 Canadian gunners who had spent the war on
17:36anti-aircraft radar in the south of England were ordered to form a radar battery with a single
17:42mission, to detect enemy mortar fire. They went straight to France to train on the job, and they
17:49worked with the advancing fronts for the rest of the war. An instrument built to find aircraft was turned
17:56around and pointed at the ground. Now, here is the turn, and it is the reason this part matters more
18:03than it looks. Once you have spent 27 years treating sound as data, something occurs to you sooner or later
18:10that would never occur to an army that treats sound as noise. Data can be read. Data can also be
18:18written.
18:19If a microphone can convert a German gun into a map reference, then a German ear is a receiver,
18:25and a receiver can be fed. Not confused. Not deafened. Fed. Deliberately. With material of your
18:34own choosing. Three weeks after that platoon commander lay in the wheat below Verrieres,
18:40the Canadians made a noise south of Caen on a scale the western front had not heard from them before.
18:47They started it at half past eleven at night. And the strangest thing about that noise is not how loud
18:54it
18:54was. It is who it was meant for. The 7th of August, 1944, late evening. A start line in the
19:02open country
19:02south of Caen, astride the road to Falaise, and a Canadian driver is sitting in a vehicle that did
19:07not exist three days earlier. Underneath him is an American self-propelled gun called a Priest. The
19:14gun has been cut out of it. The hole where the gun used to be has been plated over with
19:18whatever
19:18armor the engineers could lay hands on, some of it cut off landing craft that had been wrecked on the
19:23beaches, which the Royal Navy did not find amusing. 76 of these things had been produced in a matter of
19:29days by Canadian and British engineers working around the clock. Behind him, packed in where the
19:35gun crew used to stand, are about a dozen infantrymen. That mattered more than it sounds. Up to that summer,
19:42infantry crossing open ground behind tanks were walking straight into exactly the mortar and rocket
19:47fire that had been producing seven casualties in every ten. Simons had put a roof over them.
19:53Ahead of him is another one. Ahead of that, another. His column is four vehicles wide, and it is one
20:01of
20:01six. And in a few minutes, he is going to drive it, at night, across ground he has never seen,
20:08into a German defensive system, with his head out of the hatch and no lights of any kind.
20:15At eleven o'clock, bomber command opened up on the flanks of the corridor. At half past eleven,
20:22the columns began to move behind a rolling barrage, and within minutes that driver could not see the
20:28vehicle in front of him. Bomb dust, shell dust, and the dust thrown up by his own tracks turned the
20:35night into a brown wall about a foot beyond his face. Which is exactly what Guy Simons had expected,
20:43and planned for. Look at what he had laid on for that man. Searchlights behind the Canadian line,
20:48angled up and bounced off the cloud base, so that the whole battlefield sat under a dim gray ceiling
20:55of reflected light. Bofor's guns firing streams of tracer down the axis of advance, so a driver who
21:03could see nothing else could still see where forward was. Artillery firing target marking shells onto
21:10specific points on the route. Radio direction finding sets in some of the vehicles. Four separate systems,
21:18running at once, all night. Now count how many of those were aimed at the Germans. None of them.
21:25Every one of those signals was addressed to a Canadian driver with his head out of a hatch.
21:31The searchlights were a ceiling for him. The tracer was a compass bearing for him. The marking shells were
21:38milestones for him. The Germans were welcome to see all of it and hear all of it, and it would
21:44tell them
21:44almost nothing they could act on, because it was not a statement about German positions or Canadian
21:50intentions. It was a set of instructions. Hold on to that idea, because in February it comes back in a
21:57form that decides a battle. This is the point where the Canadian army crossed a line that most armies never
22:04got near. Up to that night, noise and light on a battlefield were byproducts. They happened because
22:10weapons were being used. Now they were being generated on purpose, on a schedule, as a communications
22:17network laid down over open ground in the dark. And here is the consequence for the man listening
22:23from the German side. He is not being deafened. He is not even, in the ordinary sense, being deceived.
22:31He is intercepting traffic. Heavy traffic, all night, from multiple sources, in a form he has no key for,
22:38because the message was never addressed to him. Every instinct he has says that noise on a battlefield
22:45is a statement about the enemy's intent. Ask a professional to interpret a signal that is not
22:50about intent at all, and you do not get a wrong answer from him. You get no answer, and then
22:56you get
22:57hesitation. And hesitation is the thing that kills defenders. Now, I am not going to tell you Totalize
23:04Firefighter. The firecrackers went smoothly, because it did not. The dust beat several of the navigation
23:10aids. Vehicles nosed into bomb craters and stuck. Columns drifted apart, and men got lost in ground they
23:18could not recognize. When the second phase went in during daylight on the 8th, two groups of American
23:26heavy bombers dropped short and inflicted more than 300 casualties on the 1st Polish Armored Division alone,
23:33with several hundred more spread across other units. The North Shore Regiment, sitting well behind the line
23:41in the suburbs of Ka, lost close to a hundred men to their own side's aircraft. That is the truth
23:48of it,
23:49and it deserves to be said plainly. But look at what held. Six columns of armor and improvised carriers
23:57moved through a defended zone in darkness, and the German front south of Caen was broken open on a
24:04frontage nobody expected, in hours rather than days. Simons had taken a problem every army in Normandy
24:12shared, which was that infantry could not stay with tanks and live, and he had solved it with cut-up,
24:19self-propelled guns, and a lightning rig. Second Canadian Corps went into that night as a formation
24:25the Germans regarded as capable but conventional. It did not come out that way. And the method survived.
24:34The Kangaroos became a permanent Canadian institution, formalized into the 1st Canadian
24:39Armored Personnel Carrier Regiment, which you will meet again in the Reichswald. So did the habit of
24:46building an artificial sensory environment and running an attack inside it. Eleven weeks later,
24:52on a seawall on the Dutch coast, a Canadian battery fired something that had never been heard on that
24:58shoreline before. It did not destroy what it was shooting at. The target was concrete, and it was
25:04still standing afterwards. The position emptied anyway. The 1st of November 1944. Behind the seawall at Fort
25:13Frederik Hendrik on the Dutch coast, a little west of Breskens, and a Canadian gunner is loading a
25:19rocket almost as long as he is tall into a steel tube on a towed frame. He is not, by
25:25trade, a field
25:26gunner. He belongs to 112 Battery of the 6th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, and until very recently his job
25:33was shooting at aircraft. The frame in front of him carries 30 tubes. The projectors existed because a
25:40Canadian gunner officer named Eric Harris had pushed for rocket fire in the field army, and there were
25:45only a handful of them in the world that morning. Across the water to the north, on the island of
25:50Walchern, are German gun positions in concrete. Somewhere behind him, British and Canadian troops
25:56are about to go at Walchern from two directions, in what is very nearly the last act of a five
26:02-week battle
26:02to open the port of Antwerp. He finishes loading. He gets clear. And then the whole frame empties itself
26:10at a rate of four rockets a second. Think about what that means at the receiving end. Not a gun
26:17firing
26:17thirty times. Thirty tubes going in a handful of seconds, and then a sky full of rocket motors arriving
26:25more or less together, each one carrying a five-inch naval shell out to 8,000 yards. There is no
26:33interval
26:33to count. There is no ranging. There is no rhythm to hold onto. And it comes with no gun flash
26:41to spot,
26:41because a rocket does not leave like a shell. It goes out in a long roar behind a wall of
26:47smoke that shows
26:48anyone watching exactly where the launcher is standing, which is why those crews learn to fire
26:54and move. Now, here is the awkward, honest fact about that shoot, and it is the most important thing
27:01in this part. It did not work. Not as an engineering proposition. The target was hardened concrete,
27:09and hardened concrete does not care about a rocket built from a five-inch shell. Afterwards, the position
27:16was still standing, still armed, still perfectly capable of firing. The German crews left anyway.
27:24Somewhere in that position was a man whose job was the traverse hand wheel on an anti-aircraft mounting,
27:31who had sat through months of Allied bombing on that coast without once leaving it. He put his hand on
27:38that wheel, and then he did not turn it. He climbed out of the pit and went. And a gun
27:45position,
27:45with nobody standing in it, is out of the battle whether the concrete is cracked or not.
27:51So ask the obvious question. Those were not raw men. They had been under Allied air attack for months
27:59on that coast. They knew what heavy bombing felt like. They knew naval gunfire. They knew what a medium
28:06regiment sounded like walking rounds towards them. Why did that one, which physically achieved nothing,
28:12take them off their weapons when far heavier things had not? Because a soldier under fire makes the
28:19decision to stay or run in about two seconds, and he makes it on the basis of what the sound
28:26means.
28:27That is the whole calculation. What is it? How big is it? Is it walking towards me? Do I have
28:35time?
28:36Every one of those questions is answered from the catalog in his head. There was no entry for this.
28:42And a man who cannot classify a sound cannot estimate it. And a man who cannot estimate it will assume
28:49the
28:50worst available answer, because assuming the worst is how you stay alive. Now put that beside what we saw
28:57in Normandy, because these two things look similar and they are opposites. The German army had been using
29:03sound as a weapon since 1939. The siren on the Stuka. The shriek of the Nebelwerfer. Serious, deliberate,
29:13effective acoustic warfare. And I do not want to understate it. But notice how it worked. Those
29:20sounds terrified people precisely because everybody knew exactly what they meant. The siren was frightening,
29:27because the catalog entry was correct and complete. German sound was a message, and it relied absolutely
29:35on the enemy receiving it clearly. The Canadian effect on that seawall was the reverse of that in
29:42every respect. It worked because there was no entry at all. It did not communicate. It refused to
29:50communicate. And the refusal was the payload. One method needs the enemy to understand. The other needs
29:57him not to. Hold both of those in your head, because in February they end up in the same fire
30:03plan at the
30:04same time. The Shelt itself was not a clever battle, and I will not pretend otherwise. It was five weeks
30:12of flooded polder, blown dykes, mud and rifle sections waiting, and it cost 1st Canadian Army 6,367 Canadian
30:22casualties out of nearly 21,000 Allied. What came out of it, besides the port of Antwerp finally opening,
30:30was a body of hard, practical knowledge about what an unreadable sound does to a defender, held by men
30:38who were about to spend a winter with nothing else to do but think. Within days, those rocket projectors
30:46were firing more than 1,100 rounds in six hours over the Shelt, and shortly after that, 2,400 rockets
30:55onto seven targets in support of the 1st Polish Armored Division along the Maas. And then the front
31:02stopped moving. The next move in this whole contest involved no new weapon of any kind. It took four
31:10months. It happened almost entirely in the dark, in the rain, in a wet salient south of Nijmegen,
31:17and to an observer it would have looked like the most boring sector on the western front.
31:22The Canadians spent that winter teaching the German sentries in front of them something very specific.
31:28What they taught them is the reason the 8th of February worked, the 21st of January, 1945.
31:36The cupola of a windmill on the high ground at Groesbeek in the eastern Netherlands,
31:43close enough to the German frontier to walk to it. There is a Canadian artillery officer up there
31:49named George Blackburn, a forward observation officer with the 4th Field Regiment Royal Canadian
31:56Artillery. He had been calling fire since Normandy and would finish the war as the longest serving
32:02forward observer in 1st Canadian Army. He had spent most of that winter in that mill,
32:08because the mill was the best observation post for the guns in the whole Nijmegen salient.
32:15Two men come up the ladder behind him, Lieutenant General Guy Simons, commanding 2nd Canadian Corps,
32:22and Lieutenant General Brian Horrocks, commanding the British 30th Corps, which had been placed under
32:28Canadian command. They stand in the cupola of a Dutch flour mill and match the ground in front of them
32:35to the maps in their hands, and they allot the objectives for the offensive that will open the Rhineland.
32:41Over the following days, officers come up that same ladder in a steady procession.
32:47Divisional commanders, brigadiers, battalion commanders, company commanders, platoon commanders, 22 years old,
32:57climbing a mill ladder to look at the forest they are going to walk into. Now, that is what the
33:03winter
33:03looked like from the Canadian side. Here is what it looked like from the German side, which is the entire
33:10point of this part. Nothing. The Canadians had held that bridgehead more or less alone through the whole
33:17of that bitter winter, patrolling constantly, dominating no man's land, and doing one thing
33:23above all others, denying the Germans information. Right up to the eve of the battle, no German patrol
33:31brought back the identification of any unit except Canadian. The two divisions in front of them in
33:37November were the two divisions in front of them in February, as far as the enemy could establish.
33:43And there is a detail from that winter that is almost too neat to be true. The first Canadian unit
33:50to put
33:50men on German soil in that sector, on the 8th of November 1944, claimed to be a troop of the
33:582nd Survey
33:58Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery. Not infantry. Not armor. Sound rangers and surveyors walking over the
34:08frontier to measure it. And behind that thin, unchanging Canadian screen, this is what was
34:15arriving. Between the 25th of January and the night of the 1st of February, 500,000 rounds of ammunition
34:23of 350 different types, weighing 11,000 tons, were moved forward to the gun positions and camouflaged.
34:321st Canadian Army had 250,000 tons in its stockpiles, 35,000 vehicles, 1,300,000 gallons of fuel. Engineers
34:44built or repaired 100 miles of road using 20,000 tons of stone and 30,000 pickets, and put 95
34:52bridges
34:53across flooded craters blown in the few roads that existed. Expecting the Germans to open the dikes,
34:59they stockpiled more than half a million gallons of fog oil in case the whole left flank had to be
35:05blinded with smoke. The ration strength of that army passed 470,000 men. Try to hold the physical
35:13reality of that. An army the size of a large city was assembling in a wet triangle of ground roughly
35:19six miles wide, within earshot of German outposts, and the men in those outposts could not tell it was
35:26happening. Some of that was ordinary good staff work. Movement went by night, especially to the gun
35:32sites. Ammunition was hidden in farmyards, in barns, under haystacks, behind artificial hedgerows.
35:39Assembly areas were put inside dugouts, schoolhouses, halls, and factories.
35:44A cover story was pushed, suggesting the coming attack would go north into Holland, rather than east
35:51into Germany. British officers of 30th Corps coming forward to reconnoiter were ordered to travel in
35:58Canadian vehicles and wear Canadian battle dress, because British khaki was lighter and a German
36:04observer might notice. And there were dummy gun positions, deliberately sighted where German patrols
36:11would find them, holding wooden and rubber guns that were swapped for real ones at the last possible
36:17moment. But none of that hides sound. You cannot camouflage a truck engine. You cannot put a haystack
36:25over the noise of 35,000 vehicles. So look again at what was actually being done to that century,
36:33night after night, for four months. Every night, engines. Every night, tracked vehicles somewhere in the
36:41middle distance. Every night, digging, wiring parties, patrol activity, and harassing fire at no particular hour.
36:51Every single night, for the whole of the worst winter anyone in that country could remember.
36:58Everything we have looked at so far in this story was about making a sound the Germans could not read.
37:04This was the opposite. This was making a sound they could read perfectly. Because a man on watch does not
37:13stay alert for four months. Nobody does. He builds a baseline. He learns what a normal night on this front
37:23sounds like. And normal on this front meant constant vehicle noise that never came to anything. And it meant
37:31Canadians opposite who were always active and never attacked in strength. He was not being confused.
37:39He was being taught. He was handed a correct, reliable answer to the question of whether this was normal.
37:47Every night. Until it became automatic. And the whole purpose of teaching a man an answer
37:54is so that you can change the question without telling him.
37:58At 5 o'clock in the morning, on the 8th of February, 1st Canadian Army opened fire with 1,034
38:06guns.
38:06And then, alongside them, it opened fire with 850 barrels that were not guns at all. Not one of
38:15those 850 weapons had been designed for the job it was doing that morning. And between them,
38:20they produced the sound our sentry could not name. Here is what those 850 barrels actually were.
38:28188 Vickers medium machine guns. 84.2-inch mortars. 114 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft guns firing flat.
38:3960 Sherman tanks sitting still using their 75mm guns as artillery. 24 17-pounder anti-tank guns. 12 32-barrel
38:50rocket projectors. 4 divisional groups of them, sweeping the front continuously at short range,
38:56and the gunners called the whole arrangement a pepper pot. Now stop and listen to that the way
39:01the man in the outpost trench had to listen to it. A Bofors is an anti-aircraft gun. To a
39:07German soldier,
39:08the sound of a Bofors means aircraft overhead, and there were no aircraft overhead. A 17-pounder is an
39:14anti-tank gun. Its sound means enemy armor is in the open within range, and no armor was moving.
39:20Vickers guns at that intensity mean an infantry assault has closed to within a thousand yards,
39:27and no infantry had left the start line. A tank gun firing means a tank, and tanks move, and these
39:35did
39:35not. Every one of those weapons was a sentence in a language that sentry had spent years learning.
39:43Every sentence was grammatically perfect, and they all contradicted each other.
39:48He was not listening to noise. He was listening to six mutually exclusive tactical situations
39:56happening simultaneously, none of which was true, all of which were being stated by weapons that never lie.
40:04Over that entire day, the fire fell in five separate bombardments onto 268 targets,
40:11an average of more than 9 tons of shells on each. The rocket battery's 12 projectors saturated 13
40:19targets on their own. The concentration that came down on the German 84th Division that day
40:25was probably not equaled on a comparable frontage anywhere in the west during the entire war.
40:30And then, at 20 minutes to 8, the Canadians did the single most important thing in this whole story.
40:39They stopped. Smoke went down across the entire front, and the guns went quiet.
40:45And I want to be exact about what that silence was, because it was not a pause, and it was
40:51not mercy.
40:53Somewhere behind the Canadian line, sound rangers of the survey regiments had been sitting since 5
40:59o'clock with their microphones live and their recording gear running, getting nothing usable.
41:05You cannot pick a German battery out of the loudest barrage the British army had fired in the war.
41:11Their instruments had been drowned by their own side since before dawn. The silence switched them on.
41:1910 minutes. That was the window. And into that window walked exactly what the plan had assumed would
41:26walk into it. German gun crews and mortar crews, seeing smoke and hearing the guns lift, came out and
41:33fired their defensive tasks against an attack that did not exist. Every one of them was recorded.
41:40Traces arrived clean on the film. Timings were read off, lines were drawn, and crossings appeared on a map.
41:49In 10 minutes of quiet, the sound rangers located one hostile battery and 19 mortar areas.
41:5719 mortar areas. Go back to that wheat field below Verrier, and the man counting in the mud,
42:04and the 7 casualties in every 10 that came from weapons nobody could find. That is what those 10
42:11minutes of silence were for. Then the bombardment came back, and it came back onto the positions that had
42:17just identified themselves. And now think about our sentry with his helmet off, doing his duty exactly as
42:25trained. Passing the word back that the attack was coming. He was not a fool. He was correct about the
42:32evidence. He had simply been made into the trigger of the mechanism that killed his own supporting arms.
42:39Two and a half hours later, the Canadians laid smoke across the front for a second time. And this time,
42:46the Germans did not react. You cannot blame them. They had been taught, that morning, at enormous cost.
42:54That smoke plus a lull was bait. So the smoke came down, and the German guns stayed silent. And behind
43:04that screen, the assault battalions of four divisions walked out of the woods behind Grosbeek and down the
43:11forward slopes to their start lines. That smoke was real. This time, it was real. At 1029, a line of
43:21yellow
43:22smoke shells went up, marking the final minute before the barrage lifted. And that signal was for
43:28Canadian infantry, exactly like the tracer and the searchlights south of Caen six months earlier.
43:35It told them when to walk. It told the Germans nothing. On 5th Brigade's front, the counter-battery and
43:42counter-mortar preparation had been so thorough that there was virtually no reply at all. The Calgary
43:49Highlanders and Le Régiment de Maisonneuve formed up for the assault without a single casualty.
43:55So here, finally, is the answer to the question we started with.
44:00The noise ahead of Canadian attacks could not be read because it had stopped being addressed to the
44:05man listening. A sentry is trained to extract intent from sound. Canadian sound was doing four other
44:12jobs. It carried instructions to Canadian troops. It was a measuring instrument, with silence as part of
44:20the measurement. It was assembled from weapons deliberately used outside their own signatures,
44:25so it had no grammar. And its baseline had been quietly rewritten over four months of ordinary
44:32winter nights. He was not being lied to. That is the part that matters. A lie can be caught.
44:40He was overhearing a conversation between Canadians, conducted for Canadian purposes,
44:46in which every statement was true and none of it was about him. There is one more thing about that
44:53morning, and it is the detail that has stayed with me longest. Somewhere behind the German front that day
44:59sat a battalion the German army refused to put into the line, and the reason they refused is the hardest
45:07irony in this entire story. The German 84th Infantry Division had been rebuilt out of whatever the Reich
45:14still had, and accounts of its order of battle that winter list two units that were never meant to
45:21fight. One was a stomach battalion, made up of men with chronic digestive illness who needed special
45:28rations. The other was a battalion of deaf men. It was kept in the rear, and the reason it was
45:35kept in
45:36the rear, was that the German command did not believe those men would hear an incoming bombardment
45:41in time to react to it. Sit with that for a moment. In an army whose night-fighting instructions
45:49told a sentry to take off his helmet so he could hear better, in a division holding the line against
45:55the largest artillery concentration the British and Canadians assembled in the entire war, there was an
46:01entire battalion that could not be used because it could not listen. By the end of the 8th of February,
46:08six battalions of that division had effectively ceased to exist, and more than 1,200 prisoners had been
46:15taken. What those prisoners told their interrogators was consistent and bleak. Their telephone lines were
46:22gone. Their crews could not get to their guns until the firing stopped. Cut off, without communications,
46:29facing what felt to them like limitless force, they had concluded that resistance was pointless.
46:35But I am not going to end this by pretending the Rhineland was won by cleverness. The opening
46:41morning was won by cleverness. What followed was a month of the worst fighting many of those men
46:47ever saw, in mud, flood water, and pine forest, against paratroopers who gave nothing away.
46:54Moiland Wood took six days and cost one brigade nearly 500 men. On the Gauk-Kalkar Road, the Essex
47:02Scottish lost 51 killed, 99 wounded, and 54 taken prisoner in two days. From the 8th of February to the
47:1110th
47:11of March, 1st Canadian Army took 15,634 casualties, of which 5,414 were Canadian.
47:23Horrocks called it the grimmest battle he took part in during the entire war.
47:28Eisenhower wrote to Krirar afterwards that he doubted any assault in that war had been made in
47:34worse conditions. So think about who paid for the 10 quiet minutes. At a hamlet called Mushoff on the 26th
47:42February, Sergeant Aubrey Cozens of the Queen's Own Rifles, 23 years old, a quiet man out of the
47:50northern Ontario bush, took over what was left of his platoon after four counter-attacks. He directed a
47:58Sherman onto a farmhouse, and when the tank had rammed it, he went inside alone with a Sten gun. He
48:05cleared three buildings. Walking back to report to his company commander, he was shot in the head by a
48:11sniper. His Victoria Cross was posthumous. He is buried at Groesbeek. On the 1st of March, at the
48:19edge of the Hochwald, Acting Major Frederick Tilston of the Essex Scottish, a pharmacy graduate from
48:25Ontario, took his company across 500 yards of open ground and through 10 feet of wire. Wounded in the head,
48:32he kept going. He crossed fire-swept ground six times, carrying ammunition to a flanking company
48:38that was running out. He also received the Victoria Cross. He lost both legs, and he lived another 47
48:46years. George Blackburn came down from the mill at Groesbeek and survived the war, won the military
48:53cross in Holland, and in his late 70s sat down and wrote three volumes about it so that the rest
48:59of us
48:59would know what it had been like. There is a plaque on that mill with his name on it. And
49:04Andrew McNaughton,
49:06who had sat in a dugout below Vimy Ridge in 1917 watching a line crawl across a strip of film,
49:12lived
49:12until 1966. He never commanded in the Rhineland. He did not need to. The thing he built in that dugout
49:20was still standing in a Dutch field 28 years later, doing exactly what he had built it to do. More
49:29than
49:292,300 Canadians lie in the cemetery at Groesbeek, most of them killed in the battles we have just
49:37walked through. A memorial at the entrance carries another hundred and three names of men with no known
49:44grave. And the sentry. We do not know his name, and we never will. He may have been one of
49:52the 1,200
49:53taken that first day, or one of the 3,000 who were not. What we do know is that he
50:00did everything
50:00correctly. He kept his watch the way his army told him to keep it. He built his catalog honestly over
50:08four months in the wet. He heard something he could not classify, and when the guns lifted and the smoke
50:15rose, he reported the attack, because that is exactly what a good soldier does. His helmet was lying on
50:22the parapet beside him, where he had put it so he could hear. For five years the German army had
50:28used
50:29sound to say things to its enemies. The siren, the shriek, the noise designed to be understood and feared.
50:37The Canadians did something no other army on that front did so completely. They stopped speaking
50:42through sound altogether. They used it to measure, to instruct their own men, and to say nothing at
50:49all. That is the whole answer. He could not read the noise ahead of a Canadian attack because it was
50:55never written to him. Thank you for giving this the better part of an hour. The Rhineland is the least
51:01remembered of all the Canadian battles, and these men deserve better than that. If you think this story
