WHO says attacks on ambulances affecting DRC Ebola response

Hostility from local communities at the heart of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is leading to regular attacks on WHO ambulances, one of the lead doctors involved in the epidemic response says at a briefing.

00:00As the DRC battles one of its fastest-growing Ebola outbreaks,
00:05hostility in local communities is making the response even harder,
00:09say health workers, with WHO ambulances repeatedly coming under attack.
00:16Yesterday, one of our ambulance was attacked here,
00:19you know, one of the ambulance of the response operation was attacked here,
00:23you know, in Punia, and we are really quite extremely,
00:26very regularly challenged by this situation, by this attack on health care services.
00:33The Ebola outbreak has now claimed more than 2,300 lives,
00:38making it the deadliest outbreak of the disease ever recorded in the country.
00:45Almost on a daily basis, you know, we face some kind of reaction, you know, from the communities.
00:50And again, these are a difficult situation.
00:53People are having their relatives who are sick, who are dying.
00:57Health workers say community engagement remains a major challenge,
01:02with residents needing to recognise Ebola symptoms and know what to do if they become sick.
