U.S. President Donald Trump criticized South Korea after Seoul reportedly declined a request to assist Washington in its military operation against Iran. Trump said the decision contributed to his choice to scale back military exercises with the longtime ally. Speaking to reporters, he also questioned why the United States should continue spending billions of dollars defending South Korea against North Korea. Trump said he had personally contacted South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to ask whether Seoul would support the Iran conflict. His remarks highlight growing tensions over defense spending, alliance commitments, and Washington’s expectations of its partners.

00:00But I called him I said would you like to give us a little hand we don't need
00:03help with Iran but if you'd like give us a hand with Iran he said no thanks and
00:09I said wait a minute we have 39,000 soldiers over there guarding you from
00:14Kim Jong-un your next-door neighbor. Why hasn't Kim Jong-un responded to your
00:19request to have a conversation? How do you know he hasn't responded? Has he?
00:25Yeah yes. Where are you in conversation? I'm very positive. Well just so you understand what South Korea look
00:34South Korea has been protected by us for many many years and during my first term
00:39they agreed to pay close to three billion dollars a year for protection because
00:44we don't you know they essentially weren't back and I asked them to do that at my
00:48request I said not right they weren't happy about it but they agreed I asked
00:53for ten billion dollars and they were very unhappy but we agreed for a short
01:00term there would be three billion dollars the next year would go up and the next
01:03year would go up so they start paying for their protection when the election was
01:07rigged and I ended up watching for four years and then coming back I watched
01:12Biden rescind that three billion dollars here for whatever reason when I called
01:18recently the president of South Korea who I like I think he's very nice actually
01:22but I called him I said would you like to give us a little hand we don't need help
01:26with Iran but if you'd like give us a hand with Iran he said no thanks and I said
01:33wait a minute we have 39,000 soldiers over there guarding you from Kim Jong-un your
01:39next-door neighbor and you're not going to help us on a very easy military
01:44operation in Iran that's strange no no we'd rather not get involved I see well
01:50why are we involved in helping you so and I want to help them but you know when
01:57you ask somebody would you like to give us a hand and they say no thanks and then
02:01we're guarding them from a country and paying ourselves billions of us costing us
02:06billions and billions of dollars to protect not only them but other countries look at
02:12NATO we spend hundreds of billions of dollars protecting Europe from Russia
02:20hundreds of billions mostly from Russia but from other things too and then they
02:25say well they don't want to get involved with getting you know guarding the
02:30strait where they get most of their oil they get 50% of their oil and they don't
02:35want to get involved why are we doing it so all I want is fairness and South Korea
02:39I get along with them very well but they were paying three billion dollars a year
02:43and then they convinced Biden that I was probably a bad person and they shouldn't
02:48and he immediately rescinded that order so we were getting paid we would have
02:52been getting paid a lot more but we can't go around and protect all of these
02:58countries especially when they're not there to help us
03:05on expiration of the memorandum of understanding are you any closer today to
03:09reaching a final deal to end Iran's nuclear program
03:11they're not going to make the kind of a deal that I feel is necessary look we're in
03:17there for one reason Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon you understand that Iran
03:22cannot have a nuclear weapon and they won't have a nuclear weapon and right now
03:27them building one after what we did previously with the B2 bombers going to
03:32be going to be a long time behalf but Iran cannot have it's very simple they
03:37can't have a nuclear weapon how do you respond to folks who say that you are
03:43prioritizing the interest of adversaries in North Korea over our longtime
03:46partners by scaling back these military exercises I'm making it much safer you see
03:51I'm actually making it much safer Kim Jong-un has always treated me with
03:56great respect and we met on numerous occasions actually two primary occasions
04:04spoken and spent time I understand him he understands me you're doing war games I get
04:14along with him you know he didn't like Biden he didn't like Obama he didn't like
04:18anybody but I get along with him very well no what I'm doing is making things safer
