00:00American approval of President Donald Trump's performance in office has fallen to the lowest
00:04of his current term in office. There's a number of factors that weigh on this. The New Reuters
00:08Ipsos poll shows that 33% of American adults, basically one in three, think that Trump is doing
00:14a good job in office. 64%, a little under two in three, don't think he's doing a good job. He
00:20came
00:20in with 47% public approval, so on a fairly low base, but we've seen a fairly steady decline over
00:27the past couple of months, with in particular rising gasoline prices coming up as a topic of
00:33concern and voters saying that they're starting to view Democrats as perhaps better stewards of the
00:39economy. That's particularly unusual. Historically, Republicans have had the advantage with voters
00:45on the economy and is a warning sign for Trump's party heading into the November midterm elections
00:50that will determine control of Congress. Right now, when you look at the generic ballot, which is kind
00:55of a national read of what party Americans want to have in control of Congress, Democrats have about
01:00a five percentage point edge. It's important not to oversell that number. Some of the concerns about
01:06Trump's stewardship seem to be taking a toll on his party, notably with Americans kind of having a less
01:12warm view of Republicans handling of the economy and of national security and war and foreign policy.
01:18So four out of five respondents believe that the war with Iran is going to go on for an extended
01:23period of time. If you look at it, that includes 71% of Republicans. And it stands in sharp contrast
01:29to
01:29the early days of the campaign when Trump was asserting that victory would be very swift. Obviously,
01:36what we've seen is a war that's lingered on for quite some time and given Iran the opportunity to really
01:41flex its power.
