00:00Today, in honor of a man who absolutely loved the Calgary Flames and had a passion for them
00:05and would look for the good in so many situations, I thought, let's run down a few Flames that
00:11we're just stoked about for the upcoming season.
00:14It's not, oh, well, they live up to expectations.
00:16It's not, oh, is it this?
00:18Oh, what about fit?
00:18Oh, but draft pick, whatever.
00:20No.
00:20Today, we're just going to go in and we're just going to look at three guys that I'm
00:24just stoked to see where the Flaming see or Blasty, although I don't think they're doing
00:29Blasty.
00:29Either way, you're going to get to see these guys at the Dome this upcoming season.
00:34Let's talk about players we're excited about on the Calgary Flames.
00:43Again, doing this in honor of Peter Marr, who loved his Calgary Flames and was very passionate
00:47about them and saw the bright side in a lot of things.
00:50So this will be the only negative thing I will say in this exercise, because I thought about
00:55this and I wanted to put this together and then actually running through it all.
01:00Well, I could only get to three.
01:02So that's, we'll just ignore that part and just focus on the we're excited about these
01:07guys part.
01:08All right, let's just not think too hard about how there's only three that I could just
01:11unabashedly come up with right away.
01:13Anyway, but number three on the list is, excuse me, I'm choked up about it.
01:18Number three on the list is Simone Nemich.
01:21New guy in town, big trade.
01:23And so it's just fun, especially with where the Flames are at, you know, because like they're
01:28doing it for the right reasons.
01:29They need to be doing it.
01:31There's no question about it that they need to be doing it.
01:34But a lot of the Flames stuff has been people getting sold off, right?
01:38Like it's, Kadri's on his way out the door and Colman's on his way out the door and this
01:42guy and that guy and Weger and Anderson and all of that.
01:45And there are some people coming back at times, but they're not the big parts of the trade or
01:50anything like that.
01:51And so sometimes it's just fun that a good NHL player got traded back to your team.
01:57With all due respect to Ole Mata, it's fun to have a guy just winding up back on your
02:02team and that was the big part of the deal and you got the big guy in the deal.
02:05And then also with it, I'm just excited to see where he fits.
02:08I'm excited to see how Nemich can play with more responsibility and with more zone time
02:15provided to him.
02:16I'm really, really, really excited to see what Nemich can do with this Flames team and
02:22what kind of the ceiling is for him and how it changes the dynamic of things on this Calgary
02:28Flames team.
02:28So I'm excited to see Nemich.
02:30He is my number three.
02:33At number two, I'm going Zayn Parekh.
02:36The dude is just, he is lightning out there.
02:39He is so, like, you watch him at the World Juniors.
02:42If we can just ignore the first part of his time with the Flames.
02:45Watch him at the World Juniors and just see how damn exciting that guy is with the puck
02:50on his stick and then you see it start to get a little bit better and you start to get
02:54a little bit better and then he's putting spin moves on guys and now he's putting pucks
02:58on the net.
02:58Now he's putting pucks in the net.
03:00You're starting to see everything that we wanted this kid to be and now he has a full
03:04offseason, understanding all of that, getting ready for this next upcoming year.
03:09How can you not?
03:10How can you not be excited to watch Zayn Parekh on the Calgary Flames for however many games
03:16we get him this season?
03:17I was going to say 82, which would still mean he missed two because we're now doing 84.
03:21But however many games Zayn Parekh is on the Flames, I'm going to be excited.
03:24This is the most exciting player, I think, just from a he does fun things on the ice standpoint
03:30that we've had in a while with the Flames.
03:32But number one for me is Matt Vagrennen.
03:36I have been gushing about him a lot in these little preview videos that we've done leading
03:42up to the start of the season.
03:43But I just think of how young he was coming into the league.
03:47And you think about it, like when he got called up, it was an injury replacement and
03:51it was just, okay, he's going to be here for a couple of weeks.
03:54And then I think I might have even said this on the radio.
03:57He's going to be here for a couple of weeks and then he's going to get sent down.
04:01And we're going to be upset about it, but it's just a numbers game and you want him
04:04to get that number one line time in the American Hockey League.
04:07So he's going to come up here for a cup of coffee.
04:09We're going to be excited about it.
04:10It's going to be a nice little boost for a couple of weeks and then he's going to go
04:12back down and we're all going to be really mad about it.
04:14And then he just stayed and he stayed and he stayed and then Huberto's hip fell apart
04:18and then he was here for the rest of the year.
04:20Like he just, he made himself undeniable.
04:22And so you have all of that experience, all that confidence being gained and off season to build
04:27on it and now a full training camp, not to try to make the team,
04:31but to get acclimated with your line mates, to get comfortable back up at game speed and
04:36to be ready to just jump on that treadmill and start running for the NHL season.
04:40So I think, again, he has a skill set that no one else on this forward group has right
04:44now.
04:45He has an electricity to him that only a couple on the entire team have.
04:50And I'm just stoked to see what this guy can do.
04:52So those are my three guys that I'm really excited about for the Flames this upcoming season.
04:58A couple other ones here in the YouTube chat.
05:01We got Mace Taggart saying,
05:03Brustavich, Grinnon, and Carols in April, Pete.
05:06Yeah, like Carols, I'm with you.
05:08Like that whole group coming up at the end of the college season, whenever that happens,
05:13right?
05:13Like, it's funny.
05:15A lot of people, you want your prospects to do well, right?
05:19It'd be fun to watch the Frozen Four and all of that and have Flames representation all
05:25over the place.
05:25It'd also be kind of neat if they just gigantic upset and they're eliminated right away.
05:30Because I want to see these guys in the Flames a little bit earlier.
05:33But whenever they do come, you're right.
05:35Like, Carl's probably the big one, the first round pick from this year, hearing all about
05:40how awesome this dude's going to be.
05:41Let's just get him in the system.
05:43Same thing with Reshni and Wittenbach and all of that.
05:46Like, just all of those guys.
05:47That could probably be just a category unto itself here, Mace.
05:51Just having those guys, like the college kids, as number four on this list.
05:56Because just so excited about where they're going to be.
05:59Yeah, Connor.
05:59Reshni, Potter, Wittenbach in April.
06:02Getting those guys in.
06:03Just seeing what it's like.
06:04Getting that excitement back in with this.
06:07Because that has been missing.
06:08You know?
06:09It's nice that they're doing it the right way.
06:11And none of this is criticizing what they're doing, by the way.
06:14It's just nice that they are back doing this the way that they're supposed to be doing it.
06:18But it leads to some not great stuff, right?
06:21You get upset because people are winning games.
06:23And you're getting upset because, well, this guy's not getting the ice time.
06:26And this guy's not getting the ice.
06:27Hey, what can this guy do?
06:28Well, maybe he's a third liner.
06:30But now you're getting, like, genuine first-round draft picks getting called up.
06:34Guys who are winning trophies and scoring titles at collegiate levels.
06:38And people who we're talking about as future captains of the team.
06:41Now they're coming up.
06:42This is the fun part of the rebuild.
06:44I mean, the most fun part is when it's totally built and you win a Stanley Cup.
06:48But this is the fun part of the rebuild.
06:49It's all these kids coming up and getting to see all that excitement again.
06:53It's just nice to have things to look forward to.
06:56Instead of, boy, hope they get a first-round pick in this trade.
06:59Necessary.
07:00Kind of fun.
07:01Not as fun as when all these guys are going to be coming up.
07:03So that's it.
07:05100%.
07:06BBJ403 saying,
07:07If Karls and Reshny make it far, then they might not make it to the NHL this season.
07:11Yeah, we need a nice balance of the kids do pretty well at the collegiate level.
07:17But maybe not too well because I want to see them this season.
07:20So, you know, very selfish of me.
07:23I understand that.
07:24I like this one from Connor.
07:25Sneaky one to be excited about is Ball.
07:27I think people forget that he took a big step from year one to year two with carrying the puck
07:31and shooting and his skating.
07:32He's always been solid.
07:33But what's next?
07:34I honestly, Connor, I had that exact thought like 45 minutes ago when I was putting all of this together.
07:42And just thinking of like different guys.
07:44Because Ball, when he came in, it was, yeah, solid third pair guy.
07:49Not going to be a whole lot.
07:50Is what he is.
07:52Someone will pass him and he'll get sent down.
07:54Or traded away.
07:55Or he's going to end up in Russia at some point.
07:57And then it's, okay, we got a top four guy here.
08:00Just a solid, solid dude.
08:02But look who he's playing with.
08:03He's going to be, eventually that's going to get passed.
08:06But you're right, he just keeps getting better.
08:08And he keeps elevating.
08:09Like he was a, he was the genuine number one on this team.
08:12I don't know if he's number one on a championship team or anything like that.
08:15But he was a genuine number one on this team.
08:17And he took, you're right, a huge step from year one to year two.
08:22If he takes another big step, like, I mean, there's only so far you can go from jumping up to
08:27top defensemen on this team.
08:31I think that there is a lot there that he can still kind of figure out.
08:36And there can be some growth.
08:37And the thing that you like is he obviously works at his craft, right?
08:40Like you hear guys talking about how they eat, sleep, breathe hockey.
08:44I think this dude actually does.
08:45He is looking for ways to get better and trying to, trying to improve himself.
08:49So if he can take another, even mini step this year, that's 100% right, Connor.
08:54I'm excited about it.
08:55BBJ, this is a good point too.
08:56If ball plays with Nemec, he'll probably just have to sit back and cover for Nemec.
09:00That's fair.
09:01And yeah, like we're not going to see all the rushes that Nemec would do.
09:04I think sometimes we can overstate that as fans.
09:08Just because like, yes, he is going to have to be the steady rock there if Nemec is going to
09:13be flying all over the place.
09:15That doesn't mean he just has to sit back in his own end and wait though, right?
09:17Like he's still going to be able to be involved in things.
09:20They're still going to need him to move the puck.
09:22It's not like he's going to get the puck on his side and well, have to get it to Nemec.
09:26So fire it across.
09:27He's allowed to do those things too.
09:29It's just, yeah, it will be maybe a little bit more of a muted version of it.
09:33But I still think there is going to be room for him to create this season.
09:36And I think that's also going to be one of the things we talked about a few weeks ago.
09:40How Ryan Husker fits into this whole scenario is you need to now let guys maximize what they have offensively.
09:51Like being able to sit back and do the defensive thing, that's neat, that's great.
09:54But there is a little bit more to be had offensively and a little bit more to be had creativity.
09:58I'm not saying that ball is going to look like Parekh, but I would like to see him with the
10:02reins loosened just a little bit to see if there is maybe a little bit more there.
10:06Um, so I think that, yes, like he is going to be, of the guys on his pair, he's going
10:13to be the much more chill one for, and the much more responsible one.
10:18But, I mean, we've all, it's like a night out with your friends.
10:22The responsible one, unless they're driving, but the responsible one, if you guys are planning on ordering an Uber after,
10:27the responsible one is holding your hair and making sure like puke isn't going everywhere.
10:31But they're, they're toasty.
10:33They're involved in the night as well, right?
10:35That's what this, I think, could be.
10:36Where, like, he's not going to be, I'm just drinking waters all night, but he's also not going to be
10:42like,
10:42oh man, this one is called the Death Bomb, better order five shots of that.
10:45Like, he's going to be somewhere in the middle of that, while Nemec can go out and get his party
10:49on.
10:49Really forced analogy, especially from a 36-year-old who hasn't been out in a really long time in that
10:53way.
10:53But I think you kind of get the point that I'm trying to get at there.
10:57So, hey, look at that.
10:58Like, I talked about, oh, there's only three guys to be excited about.
11:01And we stumbled on some other ones.
11:02And also, Conor here, Cooley, was a great one, was that one great year?
11:08Or is he legit like Vladar?
11:09Yeah.
11:10Like, he's also just a weird dude.
11:12So I'm excited to see the different ways that he just perceives the world and everything that goes into that.
11:19But you're right, like, he had a great year one.
11:21Then he goes to the Worlds.
11:23He went to Switzerland for the World Hockey Championship.
11:25Like, that's a really cool life experience that he had.
11:28So now, what does that mean for him?
11:30And then also to it, Dustin Wolf.
11:33I know the goalie kind of gets the bit of the bad rap in the rebuild,
11:36because if he's doing well, then the rebuild stuff doesn't get to progress as quickly,
11:40because you want to lose and get better draft picks.
11:43But as exciting as a goalie can be in net and not be just insane,
11:48like Peter Morazic flopping all over the place,
11:50Dustin Wolf's pretty exciting.
11:52And exciting to see that next level, if he can take another step,
11:55with a defense that isn't the one that he played behind a couple of years ago,
11:59but has improved, I think probably pretty vastly improved,
12:02from the defense that he was playing behind to end the season last year,
12:06where Ole Mott is getting 25 minutes, right?
12:08So, I'm excited to see Wolf, too, and see where he gets to.
12:11Mace Taggart's saying,
12:12Pete, I'm telling you right now,
12:13Mace has been on this for a little bit.
12:15I'm telling you right now, seriously, 90 to 97 points this season.
12:19Guys know they're playing for their jobs,
12:21and in a draft year of centers, they're overachieved.
12:24Shake my head, Pete.
12:26I'm still going to take the under on 97.
12:31I'll take the under on 92.
12:32Like, that's, 90's a bit much.
12:34I do think there is going to be a little bit of that, right?
12:37Because it's what happened a couple of years ago.
12:40The identity of this team is always going to be,
12:42they're going to work hard.
12:44And when it's January,
12:47and the teams are just kind of looking ahead,
12:49and they're making the playoffs,
12:51they're not giving it everything they have,
12:53they're kind of in fuel conservation mode to sprint to the end,
12:56you can steal some wins in there.
12:57And this Flames team is going to be looked past, I think.
13:00Like, they caught teams off guard a couple of years ago,
13:03teams were more ready for them last year,
13:05and now I think there will be some teams that kind of ease up on it.
13:07So, could I see a world where this team gets to 80, 82 points?
13:13Yes, I could.
13:15I don't know if the playoffs are as much of a threat
13:17as Mace maybe necessarily believes,
13:20but I can absolutely,
13:21you can squint and see where that would happen, right?
13:23And I think part of it would come from
13:28progression that is actually good.
13:30You know, like, it's not just,
13:31this guy comes in and,
13:33oh, they're working really hard and they win 2-1.
13:35You're now at the point where you've cleared out,
13:37you've cleared out Kadri,
13:39you've cleared out Coleman,
13:39you've cleared out all of that.
13:41And I think that you could see
13:44where, like, before,
13:46when it was a couple of years ago,
13:48it was Huberdeau had a pretty good year.
13:49And Kadri had a really good year.
13:51And it was Wieger,
13:52and it was Anderson,
13:53and it was those guys,
13:54Coleman and Backlund.
13:54And those guys really kind of helping out
13:57to carry that load.
13:58If they do that again this year,
14:00the only veterans that you're really like,
14:03oh my gosh,
14:04well, this guy's taking a spot,
14:05is, like, Backlund, kind of,
14:07and, like, Whitecloud.
14:08But again, Whitecloud's gonna be around
14:09for a couple more seasons.
14:10And, but aside from that, like,
14:13if Farabee's doing it,
14:14Farabee's here for a bit.
14:16But if it's,
14:17if they're progressing
14:18and actually moving up in the standings
14:20and actually playing like that,
14:22it's the kids now.
14:25Sorry, just got a thing
14:26that something got interrupted.
14:27So I hope everything is all right.
14:29If you guys can let me know
14:30how things are going online,
14:32that would be great.
14:33Hopefully, didn't just lose everyone there.
14:36But either way,
14:37interrupted there for a second.
14:38But for, like, for this team,
14:40if they're, if they're doing that,
14:41if they are getting to Mace's thought,
14:43and they're at one,
14:46at 90 points,
14:48they're getting there
14:49because it's the kids.
14:50Like, there's not,
14:51there's not one way
14:52that Michael Backlund
14:53is carrying this team to 90 points.
14:55There isn't a hope in hell
14:56that Zach Whitecloud
14:58is carrying this team
14:59to 100 points.
15:00Like, none of,
15:01that's not happening.
15:02If they're getting there,
15:03it is because Gritten stepped up.
15:05It's because Coronado is scoring again.
15:06It's because Conor Zeri
15:08figured out how to play hockey again.
15:09It's because Sharon Govich is scoring.
15:11It's because the kids came in from college
15:13and did their thing.
15:14It's because someone from the AHL stepped up.
15:16It's because Parekh, Nemec, Ball,
15:20Bristevich, maybe, Kuznetsov, maybe,
15:21some of those guys took steps forward.
15:24So, would it be beneficial
15:28for this team to suck this year?
15:30Ab-so-frickin-lutely it would.
15:32It's a draft stacked with centers
15:34and even toward the top of it,
15:36some guys who are the exact game changer
15:37that this team is looking for.
15:39So, in the long-term build of this team
15:41and trying to progress through
15:43to where they want to get to,
15:44it is so beneficial
15:47for these guys to just be cheeks this year
15:49and for that to be the way the season goes,
15:52ping-pong balls go their way,
15:53ba-boom, number one center
15:55and then you can hit the ground running,
15:57I think, with this team.
15:59But, there are enough young pieces here
16:01that if that scenario plays out
16:03and if they're getting there,
16:04again, maybe you're not going to be able
16:07to draft that center,
16:07but I think overall,
16:09it will still be a positive thing for this team
16:11and if this young group is able to,
16:14if it looks sustainable, right?
16:16Like, if it's the Finaway Flames
16:17and they're coming back from a bunch
16:18and they're getting outshot 43-15
16:20but Dustin Wolf makes 41 saves
16:22and the puck happened to bounce in
16:23off of Klapka a couple of times,
16:26then no, don't do this.
16:28But, if this team is legitimately improving
16:31and battling their way to,
16:34okay, of course these guys
16:36are going to play like this again,
16:37then maybe you do have to look at
16:39external options by way of like trade
16:41to bring in that number one center.
16:43So, I can see where you're at on this mace
16:48and I would be lying
16:50if I said the thought
16:50hadn't really popped in my way,
16:52but I do think that that is going to be
16:55what that is.
16:56Yeah, 100%.
16:57I just, I think it's going to be okay.
16:59I think it's going to be all right.
17:00Connor saying,
17:01it's not just a couple of years,
17:03it's not just a couple of years ago,
17:05the Flames do the opposite
17:06of their expectation in the preseason
17:07going back to Hartley.
17:09That's fair.
17:10That was always the thing
17:11with the Johnny era, right?
17:12Because they would have,
17:15they would have this rough stretch.
17:16It wouldn't go very well.
17:18And then no one had any expectations for them.
17:21We would look at,
17:22oh, maybe you just got to,
17:24maybe the core's not great.
17:25You got to trade Johnny.
17:26And then there'd be the other side saying,
17:28well, you can't trade him.
17:29His value's at his lowest.
17:30And then expectations would be low.
17:32This team would come in.
17:33All of a sudden,
17:33Elias Lindholm is the greatest goal scorer ever.
17:36Or even going back a little bit further.
17:37All of a sudden,
17:38Uri Hoodler is the best third guy
17:41on a first line that this team has had
17:43in the history of its existence.
17:45And they're off and they're making the playoffs.
17:47But then they're the number one seed.
17:48And then they get shit whipped.
17:50But then expectations are high.
17:51And you're looking at it like,
17:53okay, expectations are high,
17:54but maybe you trade Johnny
17:57because it's not going to work.
17:58And the other side would be like,
17:59are you crazy?
18:00The guy just got heart votes.
18:01Like he's,
18:02he's performing out of his mind.
18:03You couldn't possibly.
18:04And then the season would come.
18:05There'd be expectations.
18:06They would absolutely shit the bed.
18:08And we'd have this whole conversation over again.
18:10It was always,
18:11I think it's part of how this team
18:12got stuck in the middle
18:13is that there was never
18:14a direction that was obvious.
18:17And you never wanted to sell
18:19on some of your big pieces
18:21at their absolute lowest value.
18:23But once they got up to their biggest value,
18:25they're tantalizing enough
18:26that you don't want to get rid of them
18:27because look how good they're playing.
18:29And so they got caught in that cycle
18:30constantly for the entire time
18:33Johnny was here, basically.
18:34And the other,
18:35obviously Johnny's the focus of it,
18:36but Monaghan and Kachuk
18:37and all those guys too.
18:38That just became such a thing with them.
18:41May saying,
18:42they're going to score
18:44Gridden 87 points,
18:46Frost 75,
18:47Coronado 74.
18:48The chemistry is so much better
18:49since Kadri left.
18:50I,
18:51man,
18:52if Gridden,
18:52first of all,
18:5487 and 74
18:55are incredibly specific numbers.
18:56But I,
18:58like if Gridden gets 87 points,
19:00I don't care what happens
19:02record-wise
19:02for the Flames.
19:03If they finish
19:05tied for the last playoff spot again
19:06and don't make it in the playoffs,
19:08if Matt Bay Gridden
19:09is at 87 points
19:10and Matt Coronado
19:12is at 74 points,
19:13then next season
19:14is a gigantic success.
19:17I am not like,
19:18we make fun of,
19:19oh,
19:19you put up a banner
19:20for the NBA
19:21in-season tournament
19:23and all that stuff.
19:23That is the closest I would come
19:25to throwing a parade
19:26for a non-championship team.
19:28I would,
19:28I would honestly consider
19:30the Matt Bay Gridden
19:31has 87 points
19:32and Matt Coronado
19:34had 74 points parade
19:35if that happened.
19:36Because then it's like,
19:37okay,
19:37we got,
19:38we got something here.
19:40And with Reshney
19:41and the rest of them coming up,
19:42that,
19:43that would be gigantic.
19:44So,
19:44I,
19:45I hear you.
19:45Like,
19:46the chemistry,
19:46I think,
19:47could take a step.
19:47And I think Frost,
19:48we talked about how important
19:49he is this season.
19:51If he is playing awesome
19:52with those guys,
19:53then you just sign him
19:53to whatever contract
19:54and you roll with it.
19:55Because he's established
19:56that he can be
19:57someone who can get
19:58the most out of those players.
19:59So,
20:00yes,
20:00that would,
20:01from a draft standpoint,
20:04that,
20:05that,
20:06would be catastrophic.
20:07But,
20:08from a
20:09development of the team standpoint,
20:11I would have a tough time
20:12thinking that's a bad thing.
20:13So,
20:13there's that.
20:14So,
20:14anyway,
20:14keep the Flames talk coming.
20:15This is way more Flames
20:16than I thought
20:17I would talk about today.
20:18There were some people
20:18tuning in
20:19thinking they were getting NFL
20:20and we've gone 40 minutes
20:21talking about the Calgary Flames
20:23in August.
20:24So,
20:24absolutely love it.
20:25Keep them coming.
20:26I'm going to pivot
20:27to something else here
20:27in a sec.
20:28But,
20:29whatever you guys want to talk about,
20:30throw them in the chat.
20:31Also,
20:31if you missed it before,
20:33we've made partner here
20:34with Couch Potato Diary
20:35on the YouTube channel now.
20:37So,
20:38accepting Super Chats,
20:39accepting the Super Thanks
20:41and all of that.
20:41There's membership stuff there.
20:43I am admittedly still figuring out
20:44all of those things,
20:46but we are going to be doing
20:47some members-only videos
20:49and streams and chats
20:51and some of that
20:52when it gets going.
20:53Not going to interrupt
20:54the regular stuff.
20:55He says the regular stuff
20:56after taking two weeks off.
20:57But,
20:58not going to interrupt
20:59the regular stuff.
21:00Everything that has been free
21:01will likely stay free.
21:03We're not going to do
21:04anything that way.
21:05I'm just coming up with
21:06different bonus-y ideas
21:07for some of that other stuff.
21:09But yes,
21:09memberships and Super Chats
21:10now available here
21:11with Couch Potato Diary
21:13and I cannot thank you all enough
21:14for the support
21:15to get us to that.
21:17I was joking with my wife
21:18before,
21:19like,
21:19the channel,
21:21there's always been
21:22a little bit of growth
21:22and it's been enough
21:23to kind of keep you
21:24tantalized by it.
21:25But now that,
21:26like,
21:26things have really taken off
21:27over the last little bit,
21:29you kind of start to see,
21:30like,
21:30oh,
21:31I actually wasn't close before.
21:32But now,
21:33with the support of you guys,
21:34it's been unbelievable.
21:35So I cannot thank you enough
21:36for how much you have
21:37supported this channel
21:38and done everything here
21:40with us here
21:40on Couch Potato Diary.
21:42So,
21:42thank you guys so much
21:43for all of that.

21:47again,
21:47we got the Super Chats

21:56whether it's something you like
21:57from the video,
21:58something you'd like to see
21:59from the channel,
21:59something you don't like
22:00from the channel.
22:01I can take all of it.
