00:05When we last visited the WWF in 2001, it technically did not count, because it was at a UK pay
00:12-per-view.
00:12But we are back in the main canonical timeline here in the good ol' US of A.
00:17We're jumping past doing a Backlash 2001 revisit for now, and this week here on The Review,
00:24I'm going to look back and finally wrap up this rollercoaster of a year that was 2001 by reviewing...
00:32Judgment Day!
00:34From May 20th at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California, as Paul Heyman kept saying on this show,
00:40Joseph Carmine, Taylor Balsam, Justine Charles McBride, and Josh McBride nominated this show over at patreon.com slash wrestlingwithregret.
00:49And as the XFL's inaugural season recently wrapped up, and everyone's watching and waiting for something to happen
00:56in terms of this newly acquired WCW property, the biggest story right now in the WWF,
01:03the only thing that's really worth following at this moment, is the reign of terror that's being held on by
01:09the two-man power trip
01:10and their consolidation of all the gold and whatnot, working with Mr. McMahon.
01:14They're feuding primarily with The Undertaker and Kane, and man, these guys are not fun to watch.
01:20You know, I didn't like it at the time, and re-watching it, I'm reminded of the reasons I didn't
01:26like it then.
01:26And I'll get more into my reasons for not liking the two-man power trip a little later in this
01:31review,
01:31but I mean, the abstract I'll give you right now is that Austin and Triple H, I should say, do
01:37not need each other.
01:37It is a hat on top of a hat situation. It's definitely too much of a, I don't want to
01:43call it a good thing,
01:44it's too much of a thing. But I am still keeping an open mind to an extent,
01:48because I know a lot of my thoughts about 2001 have been altered over the course of several years
01:53reviewing these shows for the channel, so maybe this show is going to age better than I thought after all.
01:5913,623 folks packed the Arco Arena. This show earned 405,000 buys.
02:06It's down only a little bit from 420,000 the previous year, so numbers still doing okay at this point.
02:12The opening hype package has a crazy old man screaming about Judgment Day being upon us.
02:17Lies will become truth. Truth becomes lies. It's all Austin and Triple H, Undertaker and Kane.
02:22Fuck everything else. Ooh, look at that bloody hourglass. That's pretty metal.
02:26But I wonder, is it like liquid blood going through the hourglass, or is it like blood-soaked sand?
02:33Jim Ross and Paul Heyman are on the call for this show. Fix your damn hat, Paul.
02:37Your opening match sees the commissioner, William Regal, taking on the recently returned Rikishi.
02:43Yes, the big man is back, and he's a babyface again.
02:46After briefly teaming with Haku at the beginning of 2001 and getting mowed over by The Undertaker and Kane,
02:52we see him back on TV. He shows up on an episode of Raw, and, you know, the McMahons want
02:57him to stink face Mick Foley in the ring.
03:00But Foley basically talks him out of it and brings him back into the light side.
03:04Rikishi now, once again, a beloved babyface.
03:07All is forgiven. All is forgotten about the whole car thing that happened when Rikishi hit Stone Cold in 1999,
03:15apparently.
03:15So Regal comes out, and he reiterates what happened with Rikishi a couple of weeks ago, and he warns Rikishi,
03:21if you put your bum in my face, the consequences will not only be severe, they will be permanent.
03:26And so the match begins, and of course, this is the story of the whole match.
03:30Rikishi is going for the stink face, Regal doing everything he can to avoid the stink face.
03:35And that is the whole gist of this matchup here.
03:38One of my favorite parts of the match is when Regal starts getting his heat,
03:41and he stops to wave at the audience, and that just lights a fire under Jim Ross.
03:45He's like, what an idiot, stopping to smile and wave at people.
03:48Rikishi fights back, he's got Regal in the position, finally pulls off his signature maneuver,
03:53and oh my god, he is really grinding that one in.
03:57Like, he's got an itch that needs to be scratched right there.
03:59Then Regal does a whole lap around the ring with this look of absolute shock, disgust, horror, you name it.
04:07That is what Regal is expressing here.
04:09It's like he's death slightly warmed over, and then he gets busted open on the stairs.
04:14What a shit one-two combo that is.
04:17So then Rikishi charges into the corner, gets nothing but ring post, Regal with the cutter, and the win.
04:23I give it one and a half stars out of five.
04:25It's pretty low note, and I love the fact that if you're not paying attention,
04:29you would be forgiven in thinking that Regal got busted open as a result of the stink face.
04:35Like, it was such a horrendous thing, it caused him to hemorrhage and just start bleeding from the inside.
04:41We see Edge and Christian backstage talking about the tag team turmoil match
04:45and their chances of becoming eight-time tag team champs.
04:48And Edge goes, what about Chris Jericho?
04:50And Christian with a great line where he says, who cares about that packet of schmuck sauce?
04:54Then their good friend Kurt Angle walks in.
04:56He's got a two out of three falls match to worry about, and he says,
04:59I know it's not going to go to the third fall, but just in case it does, you know,
05:02you guys know a thing or two about this whole ladder thing, so if you have any advice, that'd be
05:07great.
05:07So Edge says, first of all, falling off sucks, so don't do it.
05:11Then Christian says, and if you do, fall off with your medals.
05:13And he should have added, and definitely don't crotch yourself on a ladder.
05:17Take it from me.
05:18We see Triple H and Stephanie McMahon enter the arena.
05:21They're welcomed by Mr. McMahon.
05:23And Vince wants to know, Hunter, what were you and Stone Cold Steve Austin thinking
05:27getting The Undertaker's wife involved in all this stuff?
05:31Why mess with the sanctity of marriage?
05:33And then Triple H rightly points out,
05:35aren't you the guy who put his wife in the sanitarium husband of the year?
05:39Which is an excellent point by Triple H, because yes, even though watching this,
05:43and it feels like May 2001 is light years away for Mania 17,
05:48it's actually not that much of ancient history.
05:51Well, the big feud between Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle that began just before WrestleMania
05:55finally comes to a head.
05:57Lately, Benoit has stolen Kurt's Olympic gold medals
06:00and has hidden them in the front of his pants.
06:02And now the challenge has been made for this match for the custody of Kurt's gold medals.
06:07And it's a good thing the UK shows don't count,
06:10because they're essentially doing it all over again.
06:12It's two out of three falls, but with a twist this time.
06:15The first fall is pinfalls only.
06:17The second fall is submissions only.
06:19And if it comes to a third fall, and I would say it definitely will,
06:23but, you know, insurrection taught us that's not always the case,
06:26the third fall would be a ladder match.
06:29So Kurt's got the mic, and he says,
06:30the medals will go from resting against Chris Benoit's genitals
06:33to going around my neck once again.
06:35And with some local sports heat, he goes,
06:37Chris Webber has a better shot at coming back to the Kings
06:39and winning a championship than Chris Benoit does
06:42at making this go to a third fall.
06:43Benoit comes out next.
06:45He pulls the medals out of his special hiding place.
06:47Kurt jumps him right away, and the match begins.
06:50And, boy, I feel bad for Howard Finkel during this time,
06:53because he just caught strays nonstop for no reason here.
06:57Jim Ross on commentary saying,
06:59Howard Finkel gleefully walking away with those Olympic medals
07:02after they were in Benoit's trunks.
07:04Kurt goes for a diving headbutt of his own early on,
07:07but misses.
07:07Benoit hits the angle slam, and suddenly he gets the first fall.
07:11That seemed really quick.
07:12They do play Benoit's music for a few seconds,
07:15and then they stop, which makes me think,
07:16oh, that was a little mistake.
07:17It happens, you know, oh, the sound guy jumped the gun,
07:20forgot it was two out of three falls.
07:22No, this kind of thing happens a lot throughout the show.
07:25The second fall takes a whole lot more time.
07:27They fight on the outside for a bit.
07:29There's great struggling every time a submission is attempted.
07:32Great physical stuff at this point in the match.
07:35And there's a great line on commentary
07:36kind of planting seeds for what happens in, you know,
07:40years to come, where they say,
07:41these guys are great adversaries.
07:43They might even be great partners one day.
07:45Benoit even puts Angle in a damn lion tamer for a few seconds.
07:49Damn, even Jericho doesn't get to do that.
07:51Angle recovers from a DDT, hits his slam,
07:54puts Benoit on the ankle lock,
07:55and Benoit taps clean as can be.
07:58That means we get the third and deciding fall.
08:00Ladder match time.
08:01A couple extra stompy stomps for good measure.
08:03Now we can begin.
08:05Kurt, for some reason, his first act
08:07is not to get, like, the obviously, like,
08:09well-built gimmicked ladder,
08:11like, built for a ladder match
08:13that's, like, set up in the rampway.
08:14He goes under the ring and grabs, like,
08:16this way smaller, flimsier,
08:19one-sided, like, at-home ladder.
08:21And he's trying to climb it.
08:22Every step he takes up the rung,
08:24I'm terrified for him.
08:26It's not even that scary.
08:27It's just a wobbly ladder.
08:29Then he's climbing up.
08:30Chris Benoit knocks him off.
08:31Like, why'd they think that was a good idea?
08:34Benoit climbs up the much stronger-looking ladder.
08:37Angle just yoinks him straight off a couple of times.
08:39It looks pretty painful.
08:40Angle tries to run up the ladder
08:42on the corner or something,
08:43but Benoit puts a stop to that.
08:45Awkward landing for Kurt.
08:46Angle responds with a suplex into the ladder,
08:49but then he takes a damn ladder uppercut.
08:51At one point, Benoit's starting to put the ladder,
08:53like, on top of Kurt.
08:55And, like, you can hear Kurt going,
08:56other way, other way.
08:58Like, he's got to get him, like, under his arm
08:59so he can do the spot.
09:01Because sure enough,
09:02he's able to pick the ladder up
09:03and dump Benoit off.
09:04There is a lot of audible spot calling.
09:07Not just, like, in this match,
09:08but, like, throughout the whole show,
09:10they just did not mic this ring very well
09:11because everyone can be heard.
09:13The cross face is applied.
09:15Kurt is tapping, but it matters not.
09:16Suddenly, outcome edging Christian
09:18to slow Benoit down.
09:20Still, he's able to fight them off.
09:21Angle has just enough time to climb up
09:23and pull down the medals
09:24before Benoit knocks him off.
09:26Angle has regained his prized, quote,
09:29Olympic gold medals.
09:31I give it five stars out of five.
09:32It was a fantastic match,
09:34and each fall together
09:35telling a really great story.
09:38That first fall coming really quickly
09:39out of nowhere,
09:40and then the much longer second fall,
09:43this great technical bout
09:44between the two of them,
09:45and then the very brutal ladder match,
09:48which, you know,
09:48it wasn't a high-flying,
09:50death-defying spectacle.
09:51It was just using the ladder as a weapon,
09:53as a third thing in the match,
09:56and being done to great effect,
09:58I would say.
09:59And, yeah, the finish is kind of cheap,
10:00and you would like to see
10:01a decisive winner,
10:03but, you know,
10:04it all plays into stuff
10:05later on in the show,
10:06and, yeah, tells, again,
10:07part of that big, great story
10:09this match definitely delivers.
10:13Back in William Regal's office,
10:14he's recovering from his match
10:16with Rikishi
10:17when The Undertaker barges in.
10:19He thinks Regal has something to do
10:20with that little ruse
10:21involving his wife
10:23and the fake car crash last week.
10:25Regal denies it,
10:26so Taker wants him to prove it
10:27by making the title match tonight
10:29No Holds Barred!
10:32Well, folks,
10:33are you ready?
10:34Because this is the moment,
10:35this is the moment
10:35that's lived in my head
10:37for the last 25 years.
10:39We go now to WWF New York,
10:41where we are joined live
10:42by the light heavyweight champion
10:44Jerry Lynn,
10:45and he's asked,
10:47well, Jerry,
10:47we know you were probably
10:48hoping to wrestle
10:49in Sacramento tonight
10:51to defend your title,
10:52and Jerry cuts this very
10:54kind of grumpy promo,
10:56very bitter promo,
10:57how he should be
10:58wrestling in Sacramento.
10:59He says he's worked
11:01his entire life
11:02to become the WWF
11:04light heavyweight champion,
11:05like, really, dude?
11:06And he goes,
11:07and what do I get
11:07from my efforts?
11:08I get to talk.
11:10Well, big whoopity-doo!
11:12And that is the most excitement
11:13in that man's eyes
11:14I have ever seen.
11:15So then he goes on
11:16about how he should be
11:16defending the title,
11:17and then he goes,
11:18well, I hope I earned
11:19my keep tonight.
11:20Was that good enough
11:20for you, JR?
11:21Was that a good promo, JR?
11:23Am I a good enough champ
11:24for you, JR?
11:25And JR, who at the time
11:26is the head of, you know,
11:28talent relations and everything,
11:29so that's behind-the-scenes talk.
11:31He's like,
11:31what are you talking about me for?
11:33And then Jerry wraps it up
11:34by saying,
11:35I guarantee if I were there,
11:37I'd bring a whole new meaning
11:38to the term
11:40Judgment Day!
11:41When I heard him do
11:42the metal voice
11:43for the first time for me,
11:45like, that broke my brain
11:46because I did not expect that.
11:48I had seen Jerry Lynn
11:50wrestle in ECW.
11:51I'd seen his matches
11:52with Rob Van Dam
11:53and thinking,
11:54holy shit,
11:54this guy's amazing.
11:55He can go toe-to-toe
11:56with one of the best wrestlers
11:58alive in RVD.
11:59Like, when he goes to WWF,
12:01like, wow,
12:01that's going to be awesome for him.
12:03Imagine what he could do there.
12:04And again,
12:05not having ever heard his promos,
12:07hearing him for the first time
12:08in this,
12:09and then,
12:10what?
12:10What is that?
12:11But, you know,
12:12that aside,
12:13I just couldn't believe
12:14they could do nothing
12:15with this guy.
12:17Like,
12:17if I were to do a video
12:18about Jerry Lynn
12:19in the WWF,
12:20that would go maybe five minutes
12:21because there's not much
12:22to talk about.
12:23This is literally,
12:24like,
12:25one of his biggest highlights
12:26in the company.
12:28Second only to winning
12:29the light heavyweight title
12:31in his first match,
12:32I think it was on Heat?
12:33Jerry Lynn has nothing
12:34to say about this promo.
12:35He's just,
12:36well,
12:36Paul Lee told me
12:37to say these words,
12:38and that's that.
12:39That was pretty cool, huh?
12:40Yeah.
12:41Sure was.
12:42Coming up next,
12:43a triple threat
12:44for the hardcore title
12:45as Rhino
12:46defends against
12:46The Big Show
12:47and Test.
12:48I'm not entirely sure
12:50why Rhino
12:51has been added
12:51to this storyline
12:52because for weeks now,
12:54ever since just after Backlash,
12:55the feud has been
12:56big show and test
12:57because of what happened
12:58in the Last Man Standing match.
12:59But now,
13:00and I get them watching
13:01the programming,
13:02Rhino just kind of like
13:03wanders into their orbit
13:04and is now put in this match,
13:06I think is the extent
13:08of the build.
13:09Show and Test begin
13:10to brawl before Rhino
13:11even comes out,
13:12and then the champion
13:13does make his way out
13:14and has a struggle
13:15with the steel steps at first.
13:16Show manages to launch
13:17both Test and Rhino
13:19over the barricade,
13:20out to the crowd they go,
13:21then to the back,
13:22and it's dark.
13:24I think we witnessed
13:25an attempted murder
13:26by Rhino and Test
13:28at one point in this match
13:29because, like,
13:29Test is trying to, like,
13:30garrot the big show
13:31with this velvet rope thing,
13:33and as he's set up there,
13:35Rhino takes, like,
13:36not a single crate,
13:37like, an entire pallet
13:38of crates
13:39and just pushes
13:40the whole thing
13:41into the big show's
13:42exposed head.
13:43You could have crushed
13:43him like a damn grape.
13:45Show tries to pin Rhino
13:46against the wall,
13:47but he has stopped.
13:48Test and Rhino
13:49knock Show off a ledge
13:50onto a conveniently placed
13:51pile of pallets.
13:53Back to the ring we go.
13:54Rhino works over Test
13:55the trash can lid
13:56as Show returns
13:58surprisingly quickly.
13:59Show with a big old
14:00chokeslam to the champion,
14:01Test Boots Show,
14:03Rhino gores Show
14:04during the instant replay.
14:06Then Test brings
14:06a fire extinguisher
14:08into the match.
14:08He stops a goozle
14:09by spraying it
14:10into the big show's face.
14:11That was pretty funny.
14:13Rhino gets Test
14:13out of the ring.
14:14He throws a trash can
14:15at Show,
14:16then runs up the steps
14:17to hit a super gore
14:18on the big man
14:19to win and retain.
14:21I give it
14:21two and a half stars
14:22out of five.
14:23It's an okay
14:23hardcore brawl.
14:25I really like the finish
14:25and how Rhino
14:26uses weapons
14:27to improve the impact
14:28of his gore.
14:30I don't know
14:30why they're so afraid
14:31to put the big show
14:32and Test
14:33in a one-on-one matchup
14:34because now
14:34across two pay-per-views,
14:36one of them UK,
14:38they have like
14:38ixnayed that
14:39or like added
14:40a third person
14:41to make the match
14:42more palatable.
14:43Backstage,
14:44we see Willie Riggs
14:45looking hesitant
14:45about telling Stone Cold
14:47the news
14:47about the main event.
14:48elsewhere,
14:49we see Lita getting ready
14:50for her match
14:51with Chyna
14:51when in walks
14:52Eddie Guerrero
14:53and he says
14:54he knows all about Chyna,
14:55all of her strengths
14:56and weaknesses
14:57and he's willing
14:58to offer some advice.
14:59But Lita says
15:00she appreciates it
15:01and says she wants
15:02to win the match
15:02all by herself.
15:04Back we go
15:04to Austin's dressing room
15:05where Regal's in there.
15:06Why did they have that?
15:08I don't understand
15:09why they broke up
15:11the scene of Regal
15:12telling Austin
15:12this news
15:13with the scene
15:14of Lita in there.
15:15Why didn't you
15:16just have the scene
15:17where Regal walks it?
15:19So back in Austin's
15:20dressing room,
15:20Regal is breaking
15:21the news to Austin
15:22that the match
15:23is still holds barred
15:24but in somewhat
15:25of a shock,
15:25Austin's very okay
15:27with it.
15:27Wow, he's so cool
15:29and calm about it
15:29you almost want
15:30to call him
15:31Chili McFreeze.
15:33Women's championship
15:34match up next
15:35as Chyna
15:36defends against Lita.
15:37Well, as you know
15:38at WrestleMania 17
15:39Chyna came back
15:40from her neck injury
15:42and she squashed Ivory
15:44to become
15:44women's champion
15:45for the first time
15:47and she's mowing
15:47through her competition
15:48going through ladies
15:49like Trish Stratus
15:51and she says
15:52well, you know
15:53there's no competition
15:54for me here
15:55in the women's division
15:55and so then
15:56Lita actually answers
15:58that.
15:59This is like a promo
15:59off on Raw.
16:01Then on the go home week
16:02Lita and Chyna
16:03are in a tag match
16:03together
16:04but Chyna
16:04never tags in
16:06and with that
16:07kind of persona
16:08of like
16:08oh, I'm just like
16:09squashing all these ladies
16:10I can't help the fact
16:11I have no competition
16:12it feels like
16:13they are setting her up
16:14for like some kind
16:15of heel turn
16:15but right now
16:16the Chyna character
16:17at least from what
16:18I observe
16:19this character on TV
16:20seems really ambivalent
16:22about everything
16:23and I don't know
16:23how much of that
16:24has to do with
16:25like the creative team
16:27putting her in that position
16:28I don't know
16:29how much of it
16:29has to do with
16:30like her
16:31and what she herself
16:32is going through
16:33internally
16:33as you know
16:34her relationship
16:35with the WWF
16:36and with Triple H
16:38in real life
16:39are starting to spiral
16:40I do like Chyna's
16:41entrance attire here
16:42with the peacock feathers
16:43it looks like something
16:44Charlotte Flair
16:45would wear later on
16:46the match starts out
16:47with a sportsman-like hug
16:48Chyna tries to overpower
16:50early on
16:50but Lita counters
16:51the press slam
16:52Chyna takes over
16:53starts to lay into
16:54the challenger
16:55hits about four or five
16:56clotheslines
16:57in succession
16:57before Lita hits
16:58a tornado DDT
17:00she starts to show
17:01big fire in her comeback
17:02a lot of arm wrenches
17:03and oop
17:04we got a bit of
17:04a wardrobe malfunction
17:05they are able to kind of
17:07stall enough
17:08and work through it though
17:09Chyna with an assortment
17:10of power moves
17:11she actually does
17:12the heel thing
17:13where she pulls Lita up
17:14but Lita catches her
17:15with an arm breaker
17:16that was a pretty cool counter
17:17Chyna's back on top
17:18suddenly we see
17:19Eddie Guerrero appear
17:20on stage
17:21and the plot thickens
17:22Lita with a close call
17:24but doesn't get it
17:25she goes with a twist of fate
17:26but Chyna pushes out of it
17:27hits a powerbomb
17:29pins and wins to retain
17:30and hmm
17:31what's that old rascal
17:32Eddie Guerrero thinking
17:34well
17:34we never find out
17:35I give the match
17:36two stars out of five
17:37there were definitely
17:38some awkward moments
17:39in this matchup
17:40wardrobe malfunction
17:41notwithstanding
17:42you do hate to see
17:43a match get derailed
17:45by something like that
17:46but it was clear
17:47that there was
17:47both ladies
17:49were operating
17:50outside of their
17:50comfort zones
17:51is kind of
17:52the vibe I got
17:53from this
17:54it seemed like
17:54Lita wanted to go faster
17:56and Chyna wasn't
17:57really about that
17:58and I think that
17:59there was a bit
17:59of a clash there
18:00but I think that
18:01for the most part
18:02again wardrobe malfunction
18:03aside
18:03they were able
18:04to make it work
18:05and god there's so much
18:06from this one match
18:07that I'm just really upset
18:10that we never get
18:11resolutions to
18:11because we see
18:13Eddie Guerrero
18:13starting to like
18:14buddy up with the Hardys
18:16and Lita around this time
18:17ooh what are his motivations
18:19Chyna says
18:20don't trust him
18:21and Eddie Guerrero says
18:22I can help you beat Chyna
18:23and oh like
18:24you can see that
18:25you know
18:25you should have taken
18:25my advice
18:26or you might have beat her
18:27and like
18:28you don't know
18:29where this is going
18:29sadly
18:30because this is Chyna's
18:31final appearance
18:32in the company
18:33she is going to be gone soon
18:34and the women's title
18:36is going to be
18:36totally just not a factor
18:38until like the end of the year
18:39when they put it on
18:40you know
18:40somebody else
18:41and meanwhile
18:42Eddie Guerrero
18:43soon after this
18:44he gets a DUI
18:45and then he is fired
18:46later in the year
18:48looking back
18:48I think this is
18:49one of the angles
18:50of the whole year
18:51that I was the most
18:51interested in
18:52definitely a big
18:54missed opportunity
18:54I was really curious
18:55to see where this angle
18:56was going to go
18:57we see Kurt Angle
18:58walking around
18:58with his medals
18:59around his neck
19:00Michael Cole
19:01catches up to him
19:01and asks if this chapter
19:02is finally over
19:03Kurt says
19:04it's only just begun
19:05and tomorrow night
19:06on Raw
19:07after I get these
19:08babies sterilized
19:09I'm going to recreate
19:10the medal ceremony
19:10from 96
19:11so wait a minute
19:12like they're not
19:13sterilized yet
19:14but you're proudly
19:15wearing them
19:15around your neck
19:16I guess it makes sense
19:17because like the last
19:18time on Smackdown
19:19when he briefly
19:20got the medals back
19:20he did kiss them
19:22he stops and thanks
19:23Edge and Christian
19:23for standing by
19:24and quote
19:25cheering him on
19:26as he won the latter
19:27match all by himself
19:28then after he leaves
19:29Edge says
19:30thank goodness
19:31Operation Get Kirk
19:32to quit bitching
19:32about his medals
19:33is complete
19:34and then Christian
19:35says it's time
19:36for Operation
19:37Win Tag Team
19:38Turmoil
19:38and become
19:38eight-time tag team
19:39champs
19:40oh man
19:41such good stuff
19:42with these three guys
19:43it's just too bad
19:44that man
19:44we didn't know
19:45we didn't know
19:46how close we were
19:47to the end of
19:48Team Ek
19:48at this point
19:49sad
19:50we go to the
19:51heel zone
19:51where Mr. McMahon
19:52is chatting
19:53with the champs
19:54and their wives
19:55and he's like
19:55hey y'all
19:56it's judgment day
19:57but it can't be
19:57our judgment day
19:59it's got to be
19:59everyone else's
20:00so the key
20:01to success here
20:02is we have to
20:03stick together
20:03and do the right thing
20:05which is a weird way
20:06to describe
20:07heelish things
20:08do the right thing
20:09on we go next
20:10to a chain match
20:11for the intercontinental title
20:13as Triple H
20:14defense against Kane
20:15this of course
20:16is a continuation
20:17of the feud
20:18of two-man power trip
20:19versus Brothers of Destruction
20:20at Backlash
20:22Kane has been dealing
20:23with an injured arm
20:24that the two-man power trip
20:26have been brutally assaulting
20:27time and time again
20:28Kane makes a return
20:29soon before judgment day
20:31starts going after Triple H
20:32and Triple H
20:33makes the challenge
20:34for a chain match
20:35Undertaker accepts
20:36on behalf of Kane
20:37and so that's how
20:38we get the match up here
20:39but I don't know
20:40maybe it's just like
20:41the mark in me
20:42but I always felt that
20:43Kane should have been
20:44in the Undertaker's position
20:45at this point in the storyline
20:46he should have been
20:47fighting Austin
20:48for the world title
20:49not having this
20:51consolation prize
20:52for the intercontinental belt
20:53kind of reminds me of something
20:54that Rob Fee said
20:55when we did a live show
20:56together in LA
20:57when Kane came in
20:58I was like
20:59oh cool
20:59he's the Undertaker's brother
21:01here to get vengeance
21:02and then when he stayed around
21:04and just kept wrestling
21:05for belts
21:06I was like
21:06he seems to have
21:08lost his focus
21:12it's weird that he was like
21:13I'm gonna avenge
21:14my parents' death
21:15and also become
21:16an incontinental champion
21:17so it's gonna be
21:18strap match style
21:19where the guys are joined
21:20together by the wrist
21:21with the chain
21:21we see this point
21:22where Tim White
21:23is trying to stop Kane
21:24from attacking Triple H early
21:25then Triple H attacks Kane early
21:27and White starts the match
21:28love that logic
21:29Trips is just
21:30obliterating the injured arm
21:32with a steel chair
21:33then he takes the chain
21:34and straps it
21:35to that same injured arm
21:37Triple H really goes
21:38to town for a while
21:39he throws Kane
21:40into the ring
21:41he grabs a chair
21:42then Kane yoinks
21:43the H-man
21:44right into it
21:45now the H-man's
21:46bleeding profusely
21:47Kane's on a roll
21:48the crowd goes nuts for it
21:49Kane goes up top
21:51but now Triple H is the one
21:52doing the yoinking
21:53fighting on the outside
21:55Triple H gets up
21:56on the barricade
21:56Kane just beals him off
21:58hard bump on the floor
21:59back in the ring
22:00Kane clocks Hunter
22:01with a top rope
22:02clothesline
22:03chain assist
22:04the choke slam
22:05it's all over
22:06but wait
22:07Stone Cold has shown up
22:08to thwart Kane's plans
22:10he's got a chair
22:11he swings at Kane
22:12maybe
22:13but he dinks
22:14the H-man instead
22:15Kane with a cover
22:16and the win
22:17new intercontinental champion
22:19I don't know what it is
22:20about Triple H and Kane
22:21they have wrestled each other
22:23like almost more times
22:24than anyone else
22:25in WWE
22:26but they have had
22:27some of the most
22:28boring and uninteresting matches
22:30we see Chris Jericho
22:31in the promo zone
22:32with Jonathan Coachman
22:33and Chris
22:34you still don't have
22:35a tag partner
22:35for this tag team
22:36turmoil match
22:37and then Jericho jokes
22:39oh it's actually you
22:39Coachman
22:40get ready kid
22:41cause you're my partner
22:41but then he kind of
22:42changes things over
22:43and he says
22:44if Edge and Christian
22:45see having the tag titles
22:47as one big celebration
22:48then it's a good thing
22:49that my tag team partner
22:50is a big party animal
22:54huh?
22:55that was a really weird way
22:56to get to the hint
22:58that you were trying
23:00to give us there
23:00we get a quick shot
23:01of Triple H backstage
23:02he's selling the beating
23:04from earlier
23:04he's furious
23:05he wants to know
23:06what the hell happened
23:07out there
23:07up next
23:08it's a tag team
23:10turmoil match
23:10where the winners
23:11become the new
23:12number one contenders
23:13for the tag titles
23:14we start out with
23:15the APA
23:16taking on
23:17Perry, Saturn
23:18and Dean Malenko
23:19of the Radicals
23:20early on
23:20Saturn throws Farouk
23:22over in a suplex
23:22Malenko's in the match
23:23for maybe 10 seconds
23:25we go back to
23:26Saturn in the ring
23:26Perry hits a suplex
23:28on Bradshaw
23:29but walks into
23:29a Ron Simmons
23:30spinebuster
23:31and the Radicals
23:32are gone
23:32we get the APA
23:34music playing
23:35for a few seconds
23:36but no it's not
23:37a mistake
23:38it's by design
23:38cause every time
23:39there's a fall
23:40we hear the music
23:41for a bit
23:41which is really weird
23:42up next
23:43it's the Dudley Boys
23:44the APA
23:45don't have time
23:46for Bubba Ray
23:47and Devon's
23:47hot dogging
23:48and get to fighting
23:49lots of back and forth
23:50with Bubba and Bradshaw
23:51we cut to a fan
23:52in the crowd
23:53with a sign reading
23:54get the tabel
23:55Bradshaw catches
23:56Devon in midair
23:57hits him with
23:58the fall away slam
23:59the Dudleys
23:59hit a doomsday device
24:00on Bradshaw
24:01the was up on Farouk
24:03then it's time
24:03to get the tables
24:04but suddenly
24:05out come Crash
24:06and Hardcore Holly
24:08and as the referee
24:08is distracted
24:09Hardcore slams
24:10Devon through a table
24:11on the outside
24:12clothesline from hell
24:13to Bubz
24:14the AP advance
24:15yet again
24:16ooh those feuding families
24:17the Dudleys
24:18and the Hollys
24:19this is another angle
24:20I'm actually kind of
24:21getting interested in
24:22at this point
24:23one is the budding
24:25friendship between
24:26Spike Dudley
24:27and Molly Holly
24:28the star crossed lovers
24:29because you know
24:30the Dudleys
24:31and the Hollys
24:32hate each other so much
24:33you can't trust
24:34a Dudley Molly
24:35don't you know
24:35they put women
24:36through tables
24:37you'll be dealing
24:38with the X-Factor
24:39I'll tell you what
24:40that Molly Holly
24:41friendship
24:42was the Dudley's
24:43the catalyst
24:44of that issue
24:45just incredible
24:46we are
24:48that's right
24:48X-Factor comes out
24:49next
24:50it's X-Pac
24:50and just incredible
24:51and again
24:52JR is just really
24:53on one
24:53for whatever reason
24:54tonight
24:54because you know
24:55Albert's at ringside
24:56lurking
24:56and he goes
24:57I don't trust X-Pac
24:58I don't trust Albert
24:59and I damn sure
25:00don't trust
25:00just incredible
25:01who I'm sure
25:02was ECW champion
25:03at some point
25:04and he's not done
25:04he also buries Albert
25:05out of nowhere
25:06he's got a big damn head
25:08he puts baby oil
25:09all over his arms
25:10Bradshaw comes back
25:11he goes for the slam
25:12on X-Pac
25:13but Albert trips him up
25:14and holds down the foot
25:15for APA to get eliminated
25:17the Hardy Boys
25:18are up next
25:19Jeff takes a big tumble
25:20over the top rope
25:21after X-Pac intervenes
25:22gets beat up
25:23on the outside
25:24thrown back in
25:25by Albert
25:25Matt gets a hot tag
25:27goes on a big run
25:28Jeff says
25:29SWANTON
25:30then he hits
25:31the SWANTON
25:32SWANTON
25:33Albert yoinks Matt
25:34off the cover
25:35what a dick
25:36Jeff with a diving attack
25:38onto him
25:38super kicked by Credible
25:40to Matt X-Pac covers
25:41and beats him
25:42coming up next
25:43it's Chris Jericho
25:45but who is his partner
25:46it's Chris Benoit
25:48the guy who's already
25:49worked a hellacious
25:50two out of three
25:51falls match earlier
25:52not to mention
25:53Jericho's former rival
25:54from the year prior
25:55is back
25:56and Benoit
25:57does not take it easy
25:58in this matchup
25:59that is definitely
26:00not his style
26:01he takes a lot
26:02of the heat early on
26:03from the factor
26:04X-Pac goes for
26:05a Bronco Buster
26:06but misses
26:06hot tag to Jericho
26:08he goes on a run
26:09and then lays out
26:10the referee
26:11it's open season
26:12on the outside
26:12of the ring
26:13a bad double
26:14super kick to Jericho
26:15but the new referee
26:16does not get to three
26:17Benoit stops
26:18a double team
26:19from happening
26:19he suplexes
26:20Credible
26:21onto Albert
26:22stereo submissions
26:23we get a tap out
26:24and the Chris's
26:25win it
26:26says JR
26:26and hmm
26:27I think we need to
26:28work on that team
26:29name a little bit
26:30at last
26:31it's Edge
26:31and Christian
26:32the former champs
26:33who have been terrorizing
26:34Jericho as of late
26:35and the ones who cost
26:37Benoit his match
26:37earlier in the evening
26:38Jericho avoids
26:40an Edge drop kick
26:41but Edge puts the knees
26:42up on a Lion Salt
26:43attempt
26:43a little bit later
26:44we get a new twist
26:45on the Doomsday device
26:46Benoit with a top rope
26:48missile drop kick
26:49onto Christian
26:49off Jericho's shoulders
26:51and they all fall
26:52on top of each other
26:53in a heap
26:53wow that looked fun
26:54I can't imagine
26:55why that version
26:56of the move
26:56didn't pick up
26:57E&C grabs some chairs
26:59but it immediately
27:00backfires on them
27:01now the Chris's
27:02want to do a concerto
27:03why
27:04aren't they the faces
27:05anyway
27:06Edge breaks that up
27:07the heels go for
27:07one of their own
27:08but it's broken up
27:09cross face on Christian
27:10who taps immediately
27:11the Chris's are now
27:13the new number one
27:14contenders
27:15I give it three and a half
27:16stars out of five
27:16I definitely
27:17it's an A for effort
27:18but this did not need
27:19to go as long as it did
27:20I felt some of these
27:21tag match like chapters
27:22within the greater match
27:24went a little longer
27:25than necessary
27:26and you know
27:27it's crazy to see
27:28Benoit go as hard
27:29as he did in this
27:30matchup
27:31especially after having
27:33the match he had
27:33earlier
27:34and sadly this is
27:35the beginning of a
27:36really concerning
27:38trend the WWE has
27:39during this time period
27:40where they just keep
27:41putting Benoit in like
27:43multiple matches a night
27:44like there is a stretch
27:45between now
27:46and like King of the Ring
27:472001 where he is
27:48like regularly working
27:50multiple matches
27:51on a single taping
27:52like no wonder he
27:53breaks his neck
27:54in your main event
27:55it's no holds barred
27:56for the WWF championship
27:58as Stone Cold
27:59defense against
28:00Undertaker
28:01his name is Stone Cold
28:02Steve Austin
28:03he's the World Wrestling
28:04Federation champion
28:05and he does not
28:06deserve this
28:07Austin has begun
28:09to go cuckoo bananas
28:10very unhinged
28:12very sadistic
28:13over the last month
28:14or so
28:14you know
28:15we saw what he
28:16and Triple H did
28:17to the Hardy Boys
28:18and to Lita
28:19we've seen what
28:20they've done
28:20to the Undertaker
28:21and Kane
28:21and to The Rock
28:23and what not
28:23and now
28:24the latest
28:24big offense
28:26that the two-man
28:27power trip has done
28:28was on the go-home week
28:29before this show
28:30the Undertaker
28:31was called away
28:32because he was
28:33informed by the police
28:34that his wife Sarah
28:35had been in a car accident
28:37and so
28:38he runs off
28:39and then we find out
28:40by the end of the week
28:42that everyone is fine
28:43there was no car crash
28:45Undertaker blames
28:46Austin
28:46for what happened
28:47Austin then points
28:48the finger at Triple H
28:49and so then we've got
28:50this matchup
28:51on Smackdown
28:52where it's
28:52Undertaker vs. Triple H
28:54fighting
28:54and Austin reveals
28:55I'm the one who did it
28:56it was me
28:57all along
28:58ah great
28:59just what this company
29:01needs right now
29:02two cerebral assassins
29:03I think I was alluding
29:05to my problems
29:05with the two-man power trip
29:07earlier
29:07and you know
29:08as more time has passed
29:10and I re-watched this stuff
29:11I am able to figure out
29:12why this sucked so bad
29:14it's because we already
29:15have Triple H
29:15doing this
29:16oh evil
29:17maniacal genius
29:19like two steps ahead
29:20to everybody
29:20I'm so evil
29:22and sneaky
29:23and dastardly
29:24Triple H
29:25that's his thing
29:25and now we've got
29:26Austin like doing it too
29:28like he's trying to match
29:29Triple H's energy
29:30and I don't think
29:31that's the right
29:33course of action
29:34for Austin
29:34like heel Austin
29:35it's different
29:36but it's not
29:37very entertaining
29:39yet
29:39like
29:40if you watch my reviews
29:42of like the invasion arc
29:43you will see
29:44Austin gets a lot better
29:45as a heel
29:46but I think this
29:47version of heel Austin
29:49is not quite there yet
29:50he's still trying
29:51to find himself
29:52he's paranoid
29:53but he's not
29:54goofy paranoid
29:55and I think that
29:56is the difference
29:57of what makes
29:58his character
29:59by that part of the year
30:00later on
30:01in the alliance
30:02so compelling
30:03also I love how
30:04out of order
30:04this hype package is
30:05the stuff with Taker
30:06throwing Austin
30:07through the window
30:07happened weeks
30:08before the stuff
30:09with the car crash hoax
30:10but that is the magic
30:11of editing for you
30:12Mr. McMahon shows up
30:14and decides to join
30:15commentary
30:15and Jim Ross goes
30:16oh it'll be the highlight
30:17of my week
30:18Mr. McMahon
30:18then we see
30:19The Undertaker
30:20come out sans bike
30:21JR brings up
30:22that The Undertaker
30:23has beaten Austin
30:25for the WWF
30:26championship before
30:27we just can't tell you
30:28what show that was
30:29the brawl begins
30:30in the aisle way
30:31and the match is on
30:32Vince is staying
30:33surprisingly quiet
30:34for a lot of this match
30:35when he's on the headsets
30:37which kind of disappoints me
30:38I actually liked
30:39this like era of Vince
30:40where anytime
30:41he went back
30:42to do commentary
30:42for like a one-off
30:43every once in a while
30:44he like slipped back
30:45into his like
30:46oh you got him
30:47man no kind of voice
30:48like that's always fun
30:48to hear
30:49we get old school
30:50off the barricade
30:51that's new
30:51then they mosey on over
30:53to the entrance area
30:54I love this one sign
30:55here that says
30:55I shoot a pound
30:56of Harron in the eye
30:58they finally get in the ring
30:59Austin throwing
31:00some weird looking kicks
31:02then does a neck breaker
31:03but lands on the chair himself
31:04what kind of video game
31:06glitches are we working
31:06with here
31:07some fast paced fighting
31:09after that
31:09Austin avoids a tombstone
31:11Taker blocks the stunner
31:12he hits a big boot
31:13back to the outside
31:14Taker is distracted
31:15by McMahon
31:16that allows Austin
31:17to strike
31:18and get some offense in
31:19he starts working
31:20the dead man's leg
31:21he keeps pouring
31:22on the pressure
31:23then we get some mud holes
31:24in dick kick city
31:25god the poor guy
31:26Taker fights back
31:28we're back to the outside
31:29then he chokeslams Austin
31:30through the announce table
31:32but once again
31:33Taker gets his eye
31:34off the ball
31:34with Vince for too long
31:35that allows Austin
31:36to dink him with a monitor
31:37which causes him
31:39to get busted open
31:40Austin with a fez press
31:41then he looks up
31:42and smiles at the fans
31:43who are booing him
31:44and once again
31:44JR is so funny
31:45the way he comes unglued
31:47for Austin's actions
31:48look at him smiling
31:49who is this man
31:51Austin taking the dead man
31:52to dick kick city
31:53again
31:54commentary starts to get
31:55meta at this point
31:56JR is like
31:57well you didn't know him
31:58Paul
31:58you didn't know him
31:59like I do
31:59and Paul's like
32:00yes I do
32:01I've known him for years
32:02I managed the two of them
32:03early in their careers
32:05Austin dinks Taker
32:06with a big old nasty
32:07chair shot
32:08then JR says
32:09Taker's brains
32:10are scrambled
32:11smothered
32:11covered
32:12and chunked
32:13like ugh
32:14that's kind of gross
32:14like I know a while ago
32:16I said something about
32:17Kane's delicious
32:18scrambled brains
32:19but that's
32:19the Waffle House order
32:20is taking it too far
32:21Taker takes the stunner
32:23but somehow
32:23he kicks out
32:24he low blows
32:25Austin to come back
32:27he hits a choke slam
32:28now it's his turn
32:29to whip Austin
32:30with the chair
32:30but now in comes
32:31Triple H
32:32he also gets dinked
32:33and pummeled
32:34another one for Austin
32:35but dammit
32:36Vince breaks up
32:37the pinfall
32:37Undertaker beats up
32:38Vince in the corner
32:39barely even tries
32:41to move out of the way
32:41of Austin's chair shot
32:43so he can accidentally
32:44hit Vince with it
32:45we get a last right attempt
32:46but Tripp's blasts him
32:47with a sledgey
32:48but wait
32:49out comes Kane
32:50to save the day
32:51oh never mind
32:52he didn't even hit the ring
32:53before Austin got the three count
32:54and he retains the belt
32:55whoopsie
32:56I give it one and a half stars
32:58at a five
32:58that was brutal
33:00okay
33:00first of all
33:01I challenge you to find
33:02a good Steve Austin
33:04Undertaker match
33:05much less a great one
33:06in their rich history
33:08second of all
33:08this match
33:09was already pretty bad
33:10to begin with
33:11and then
33:11the hilarious ending
33:13making Kane
33:14look like an all time
33:16dumbass
33:17I couldn't believe that
33:18don't even bother
33:19with him coming out
33:20at all
33:20if you're gonna do that
33:21like don't
33:22get the fans hopes up
33:23and then just like
33:24take the wind
33:25out of their sails
33:26with that three count
33:27as Kane's music
33:28is playing
33:29it's like
33:29ding ding ding
33:31then there's like
33:32a few beats of silence
33:33and
33:34Austin's theme plays
33:35what a fucking
33:36dick kick that was
33:37who wants to wait
33:38for The Rock to come back
33:39from Hollywood
33:40to save the day
33:41who wants to keep watching
33:42when the show
33:43is like this
33:45all the time
33:45I mean things do get
33:46marginally more interesting
33:48as soon as
33:49the next night
33:50because that's when
33:50Chris Jericho
33:51and Chris Benoit
33:52the two Chris's
33:53they beat Austin
33:54and Triple H
33:55for the tag belt
33:56that's a night
33:56where Triple H
33:57famously tears
33:58his quad muscle
33:59and is out
34:00for the rest of the year
34:01it really felt
34:02like they're teasing
34:03that Austin
34:04Triple H breakup
34:05like there is no
34:06hero that they're
34:07building
34:07to come topple
34:08Austin it feels like
34:09it's like oh
34:10they're setting up
34:10for like one of them
34:11to turn face
34:11after this inevitable
34:13breakup
34:13because they're costing
34:14each other matches
34:15which is what we kept
34:17seeing there
34:18so we don't get
34:19a resolution
34:19to the two man
34:20power trip
34:21and you know
34:22we do get
34:23an interesting
34:23little boost
34:24with the invasion
34:25and the alliance
34:26and we obviously
34:27know how that
34:27turns out
34:28but yeah
34:29this is a real
34:30dark time
34:31in the company
34:32it's not fun
34:33to watch
34:34Heal Austin
34:34and Heal Triple H
34:35working together
34:36and it's less fun
34:37to see The Undertaker
34:38and Kane
34:39like continually
34:40being just
34:41beat down
34:42and humiliated
34:43like this
34:44that said
34:44my grade
34:45for WWF
34:46Judgement Day
34:472001
34:48is a C plus
34:50you know
34:50it is crazy
34:52to rewatch
34:53this stuff
34:54like relive it
34:55and remind myself
34:56just how
34:58different things
34:59felt six months
35:00prior to this
35:01in the months
35:02leading up
35:02to Wrestlemania
35:03how like
35:03the WWF
35:04could do no wrong
35:05and like
35:06everything seemed
35:07to click
35:07and now
35:08this company
35:09has never felt
35:10more dead in the water
35:11and more directionless
35:13as they wait
35:14for the next
35:14big thing
35:15to come along
35:15that's not a reference
35:16to Brock Lesnar
35:17I'm just saying
35:18you could tell
35:18everyone's like
35:19please
35:20can we have
35:20an invasion
35:21can we have
35:21WCW
35:22come up
35:23and do something
35:23anything
35:24give us something
35:25to do here
35:26but what did you
35:27think about
35:27Judgment Day
35:2801
35:28and how about
35:29this review
35:30let me know
35:31in the comment
35:31section below
35:32with that
35:33I am finally done
35:34covering the year
35:35that was
35:36for the WWF
35:37don't worry
35:38one day
35:38we'll get back
35:39to Backlash 01
35:40but that time
35:41is not now
35:42but again
35:43this has been great
35:43to revisit
35:44this little chunk
35:45of time
35:45and fill in
35:46that last little
35:47gap for 01
35:48coming up next
35:49here on the
35:50Classic Review
35:51I go back
35:51to TNA
35:52covering my
35:53journey of 2006
35:54with Sacrifice
