Arriva North London bus drivers take to the picket line as they go on strike over hot weather working conditions
Transcript
00:00Comfort breaks, that kind of makes me think, oh, TfL, they're not going to get penalised.
00:06They're not going to get penalised if you take a comfort break.
00:08So why does the company care if they're not getting penalised?
00:10They don't care. They can't do it because it's been going for years and years and years.
00:14For 10, 12 years, and it's getting hotter and hotter every year.
00:18We're not being weakly, it's not saying, oh, well, you applied for a job, you should do it.
00:22But things have changed so much, and the aircon's been turned off.
00:26They say it hasn't. It must be, because I got on a bus yesterday,
00:29W3, I'm in the cab, it's absolutely boiling.
00:33I get to Frisbee Park, I get out of the cab, I go to the back of the bus,
00:37and the aircon's working. It's nice and cool in the back.
00:39I'm thinking, well, yeah, I understand when COVID was around,
00:42you separated the pipes, so we were in separate units,
00:46but what about it? I mean, how hard is that?
00:50You've disconnected, so they're two separate units.
00:53We're back into one. I mean, I'm no engineer, but it can't be that hard to do.
00:57But they don't even do that.
00:59More than 1,500 Arriva North London bus drivers from eight garages in North and East London
01:07and Essex started two days of industrial action on Friday,
01:12as the capital has battled record temperatures this summer.
01:16The strikes, planned by Unite Union for 11 different occasions between now and mid-October,
01:22are urging Arriva to replace their air cooling system with air conditioning.
01:27Drivers work shifts of up to 10 hours with a break in the middle,
01:31and have been told by Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan via LBC that they have a right to refuse
01:37to drive a bus if it is too hot.
01:40However, striking drivers said they feared following Sadiq Khan and Transport for London advice
01:46because of potential sanctions from their company.
01:49One driver said Khan's and TfL's comments were irrelevant as they don't work for him.
01:55Well, what I know is, the cab is 14, 36, 35, 44, 46.
02:02A guy the other day, I actually, he had one of these little gadgets he put into the cab.
02:07It actually said 56.
02:09I wish I still have the photo, but I haven't, so I can't prove it, it's just hearsay.
02:13But it was absolutely boiling.
02:16It makes you feel a bit uncomfortable.
02:18You're sweaty, you're sticky, you get the heat banged on to you.
02:23You've been in the greenhouse?
02:24That's my life.
02:25You know, you can't walk out.
02:27It's not like an air-conditioned office.
02:30It's not like our bosses, our directors, who are driving around what we need, a car.
02:35In a car, you can turn the heating on in the winter, set it cool in the summer.
02:39We just want the same thing.
02:41Same as a company car.
02:42It's what we want.
02:43Why can't we have air-conditioned?
02:45Why can't we be comfortable and safe?
02:47But is it dangerous, obviously, not only for yourselves, but you're carrying prostitutes?
02:50Yes, because you're like this.
02:52You're really hot, you get a bit trouser, you start eating mince and things that burn your mouth.
02:59It keeps you awake.
