🚨 America’s water crisis is reaching a dangerous new level, with two of the country’s most important reservoirs approaching critical levels. 💧
Lake Powell and Lake Mead are now holding less water than at any point since 1957, putting major hydroelectric power systems and millions of people across the American Southwest under growing pressure.
Lake Powell is dangerously close to the level where Glen Canyon Dam can no longer generate electricity efficiently. Meanwhile, Lake Mead is approaching a critical elevation that could drastically reduce Hoover Dam’s power generation.
So how did America get here?
More than two decades of drought, record low snowpack, rising water demand, and an overallocated Colorado River have all contributed to the crisis. Agriculture accounts for the majority of the river’s direct human water use, with crops such as alfalfa requiring enormous amounts of water.
Now, the seven states that depend on the Colorado River are facing difficult decisions as existing water sharing agreements approach their expiration.
Federal officials are already moving water between reservoirs to buy time, but protecting one reservoir can accelerate the decline of another.
This is more than a water shortage. It could affect electricity production, agriculture, water supplies, and the cost of living across the American Southwest.
