Thieves bypass security to steal four Renaissance artworks from Sicily museum

The thieves stole three of the five surviving panels of the San Gregorio Polyptych, dated to 1473, as well as the double-sided panel depicting the Virgin Mary and the dead Christ in Pietà.

00:00Thieves stole four works attributed to Renaissance painter Antonello de Messina
00:04from a museum in Messina, Sicily, while crowds gathered for Assumption holiday celebrations.
00:11Making their move on Saturday evening, the thieves removed all five panels of the 1473
00:16San Gregorio Politic from its frame, taking three and abandoning two behind a wall.
00:22They also stole a double-sided panel depicting the Virgin Mary and the
00:26dead Christ in Pieta from an armored display case.
00:30Art experts estimate the value of the stolen works at between 70 and 80 million euro.
00:37Museum director Marisa Mercurio said the alarms were working and guards were on
00:41site when the theft occurred shortly before 10 pm.
00:44The museum was closed on Sunday while investigators gathered evidence.
00:49The theft came days after police in Parma announced the recovery of three stolen works by Renoir,
00:55Cézanne and Matisse worth around 10 million euros.
