00:00The Taliban government celebrated five years of ruling Afghanistan on Saturday,
00:05even as critics decried tightening restrictions in all areas of daily life.
00:11The foreign minister, Amer Khan Mutaki, along with others, attended a ceremony and gave speeches in Kabul.
00:18The Taliban regained control of Afghanistan on August 15, 2021,
00:23after it launched an offensive as the U.S. and other NATO troops withdrew from the country
00:28after two decades of war.
00:31The withdrawal led to chaotic scenes at and around Kabul's airport, with thousands wanting to leave.
00:38Before the takeover, the Taliban stated that, upon assuming power,
00:42it would allow women access to education, employment and public participation,
00:47but in accordance with its interpretation of Islamic principles.
00:51Soon after it seized power, the Taliban imposed an indefinite ban on girls' education beyond the sixth grade,
00:58and a few months later also banned high education for women until further notice.
