"This was to prove a dress-rehearsal for the World Cup Final just five months later. Nobby Stiles, wearing the number-nine jersey but playing in midfield, scored the only goal of the match and of his international career. Some of the less-educated football reporters wrote that Stiles had played at centre-forward and that 'Ramsey's gamble of playing him as a spearhead' paid off with a goal. They were yet to understand that jersey numbers were becoming meaningless. Little had been learned since back in the 1950s when Nandor Hidgekuti completely baffled England's defence by playing a withdrawn role in the number nine jersey. Geoff Hurst made an impressive England debut, and Keith Newton's first England game ended just before half-time when he limped off to be replaced by substitute Ray Wilson. The Germans claimed an equaliser when Heiss turned in a cross from Held, but the referee disallowed it after consulting a flag-waving linesman. The shape of things to come! The appearance together of Stiles and Hunter meant the game became a bruise on the memory of several of the Germans."

00:00In World Cup year, England organised a friendly that surely would have helped their preparation.
00:04Germany at Wembley.
00:06This was unwittingly a dress rehearsal for what was to occur in June.
00:11But to cap it all, Jeff Hurst made his international debut.
00:18As England kicked off against West Germany at Wembley,
00:20it was a foretaste of the World Cup competition in which both countries have high hopes.
00:25England, White Shirts, tried out Alf Ramsey's new tactics,
00:28and the Germans were reported to have some novel ideas, too.
00:33Banks was coolly in command here.
00:38Reign and the very heavy pitch were all against brilliant ballplay or displays of speed,
00:43but a good try by Hunt encouraged England.
00:47German centre-forward Siegfried Heltz was cleverly foiled by goalkeeper Gordon Banks.
01:03Near half-time, full-back George Cohen put the ball in the goal-mouse.
01:07Hunt's header didn't quite make it, but Stiles scored.
01:17England led 1-0 at the interval,
01:19and again it was Cohen working the ball into German territory.
01:22No reward for England this time.
01:33Heltz was in good form for the Germans,
01:34and it was lucky for England that the defence, especially the goalkeeper, proved steady under pressure.
01:43For England, a lead by the only goal scored so far was not a strong position,
01:48but the German defenders repeatedly got out of trouble.
01:50A corner against them here.
01:54Danger averted.
01:55At the other end, England were once more saved by Banks.
02:00With only 15 minutes to go,
02:02substitute forward Alfred Heiss appeared to score.
02:09Congratulations were premature.
02:11The linesman had flagged the ball over the byline,
02:13and the Dutch referee disallowed the goal.
02:24Not an inspiring night for either side,
02:27but England won 1-0.
