16th vs 9th. West Ham need a win to pull them up the table.
Transcript
00:03Good evening once again. Now how badly does a cup defeat affect a football team? Both West Ham United and
00:09Sheffield United have been knocked out of the FA Cup. For Sheffield United, this perhaps not all that serious because
00:15they've done nothing to play for, although they were one of the frontrunners earlier in the season.
00:19But West Ham can't afford to get dispirited. They're still in the Cup Winners' Cup. They play against Magdeburg of
00:24East Germany, hit at West Ham on March the 2nd. A week later, they play in the first leg of
00:29the final of the Football League Cup against West Bromwich Albion.
00:33So, no doubt, they're delighted to find out that today they are feeling what is probably their strongest forward line.
00:40And the strongest forward line, of course, means that Johnny Byrne is at centre-forward, and Hurst, the man who
00:46might play for England on Wednesday, is at inside left.
00:50Defence, of course, the tried and trusted West Ham United defence. Now, I think a great piece of joy for
00:58the West Ham supporters is that Ronnie Boyce, they're inside right.
01:02There he is. He's the engine room of the West Ham team. Happy everyone is that he's now fit and
01:08back in the side.
01:11But perhaps the people not happy that Ron Boyce is back in the West Ham team of the Sheffield United
01:16players, who've got two brothers, Barry Wagstaff, left half, and Tony Wagstaff, at inside right, and, of course, at centre
01:24-half-back.
01:25They've got Joe Shaw, the wonderful veteran. There he is, number five captain of the side. Goodness knows how long
01:30he's been playing for Sheffield United, and perhaps the greatest uncapped centre-half-back in the business.
01:36Kick-off, Sheffield United wearing the dark shorts. Actually, they're a very natty red.
01:44Referee, Mr. NCH Bertenshaw of Great Yarmouth, a man who could well be in the running to referee the cup
01:51final this season.
01:53Fine referee. Now, Jones, the England international centre-forward.
01:56And this is Len Badger, the right-back.
02:00Graebrook.
02:16Graebrook.
02:17Graebrook.
02:18Burn on the right wing. Here's Burn.
02:20Football.
02:21Finding voice.
02:25Well, if only Boyce had had eyes in the back of his head.
02:29This is Shaw. Alan Hodgkinson, a former England player, in goal. Birchenor. Good, young, striking inside forward.
03:05Oh, I wonder what Alan Hodgkinson is thinking and saying.
03:11And that's Reg Mathewson, the softest own goal for a long, long time.
03:23So it's one goal to nil, West Ham in the lead.
03:35There's Boyce clearing six or seven yards from his own goal line.
03:41And Cicely streaking away, Graebrook trying to go down the middle but instead is to burn on the right.
03:45And there's a bit of a one to Graebrook, a glorious bit of football.
03:54Sending the goalkeeper the wrong way, but he still manages to save it with his feet.
04:01It's strange but what a good ball that is to look start to Jones.
04:08The five forwards rather got out of rhythm then.
04:13More to Graebrook, he's got Hirst in the middle.
04:17Hirst being covered by Melander, and Graebrook at the goal!
04:26There's Hirst, number 10, congratulating Graebrook.
04:31The scorer was, the outside right there he is, Graebrook.
04:3722 and a half minutes gone, their attacks.
04:44Burn to Brown.
04:49Miss Creeters, that was a bad girl.
04:51Sissons, and Sissons, Hirst, number three.
05:0233 minutes gone.
05:05Hirst the scorer.
05:08There he is, Jeff Hirst.
05:12I think the West Ham crowd would rather see West Ham coming more onto the attack than they are doing.
05:20This is Jones.
05:21The Sheffield United set forward to Tony Wagstaff.
05:24Woodward.
05:27And...
05:27Is it Jones that can get to go over?
05:30Um, Brown rather?
05:31Yes, Brown.
05:32Corner.
05:37Shaw.
05:38Good ball out to Rhys.
05:43The tennis, Bertrand Hall.
05:47Oh, a beautiful header!
05:48And a fine save.
05:50Woodward, the man who got his head to it.
05:55The first time, Seville United have looked like scoring.
06:05Woodward, the Sensors.
06:07Here comes Peters.
06:09Ring of pitch, still with Sissons though!
06:14Petters.
06:20That's the sort of sucked of the crowd, love, it's almost a goal at the West Ham end, and then
06:24almost a goal at the Sheffield United end.
06:34Barry Wagstaff to
06:35centre forward, Jones
06:37Barry Wagstaff
06:42Mathewson
06:45Jones to Bettenall, a good move
06:54And Cheval United have had a couple of opportunities to score
07:05Now it's Peters for West Ham
07:10Graverick
07:13And the cricket
07:15Will of course there be time to take it
07:19And there goes the whistle for half time
07:22With West Ham United comfortably in the lead
07:25By three goals to nil
07:28They kick off for the second half
07:30All the tea is finished in the flats across the way
07:33And people back at their windows
07:34To see whether the Hammers can
07:36Rattle up more goals in the second half
07:44Burn into the boys
07:46The West Ham manager
07:48Of course not here today
07:52That's the way to spread even the strongest defence
07:54By Braybrook
07:57They've got Mathew in the medals
07:59We've got Sissons and Byrne
08:00And here comes Peters
08:03Byrne
08:07Byrne
08:08Byrne
08:23Byrne
08:24Bertrand Hall
08:29Well Alan Bertrand Hall
08:31Number 10
08:31Must be wondering how he's missed on it
08:33Two he should have had in the second half
08:40Corner two
08:41Sheffield United
08:50Sheffield United
08:51Boyce and Mathewson
08:53Penalised for that high kick
08:57Brown
08:59Brown
09:00Brown to Burkitt
09:02And here comes Moore
09:04Ramping through that sticky mud
09:06A bit over the line
09:07But the linesman says no
09:11Now Hurst
09:12Hurst to Peters
09:16Peters
09:16Peters get the ball
09:30And Peters
09:31There he is number four
09:35Beautiful shot
09:3628 minutes of the second half gone
09:42There he is
09:43Martin Peters
09:44A fine player
09:45Either as a forward
09:46Or a wing halfback
09:52Civil United was not among the big scorers
09:54In the first division
09:57And it's easy to see the reason why they're not
10:00That's a good ball from
10:02Cissons to Peters
10:02Hurst in the middle
10:03Is he onside?
10:04Yes he is
10:09Alan Hodgkins
10:11And the whistle goes
10:12For the end of the match
10:14A comfortable rather easy
10:16Victory for West Ham United
10:19Four goes to Mill
