00:09The rocket is already gone by the time you'd think to look up.
00:14A streak, a crack that rattles your chest,
00:17and then nothing but smoke curling off a launch rail.
00:21Three soldiers are moving before the smoke clears,
00:25not toward the impact, away from their own position.
00:29Because somewhere on the other side of the front line,
00:33a radar operator just watched their launch and started a clock.
00:38And if that crew is still standing where they fired from
00:42when the clock runs out,
00:44the $5 million truck under them
00:47and the three lives inside it become a crater.
00:51This is how a HIMARS crew fires a rocket
00:54that costs more than most people's houses
00:57and disappears before the enemy can make them pay for it.
01:02To understand why five minutes is the number that decides
01:07whether these men live, you have to understand
01:09what they're actually doing every time they pull the trigger.
01:13The M142 HIMARS is, underneath the acronym, a truck.
01:20A six-wheeled army cargo frame with a steel box bolted to the back,
01:26built by Lockheed Martin and fielded in 2005.
01:29That box holds six rockets, guided the whole way down by GPS
01:36and an inertial system that keeps working
01:40even if the satellite signal gets jammed.
01:43A crew of three runs the whole thing.
01:46A driver, a gunner and a section chief.
01:49And on a well-drilled crew,
01:52any one of them can step into either of the other two jobs
01:56if someone goes down.
01:58That redundancy exists for the day one of them is wounded
02:02and the mission still has to finish itself.
02:16The launcher itself runs somewhere in the neighbourhood
02:20of five to six million dollars
02:23once you price in the fire control electronics.
02:27And it's light enough to fit whole inside a C130,
02:31which means a launcher can roll off a cargo ramp
02:36on a runway that was a grass strip an hour earlier
02:39and be laying rockets on a target within minutes.
02:43Each rocket riding in the back cost about $150,000,
02:48based on figures a Ukrainian artillery officer
02:52gave on national television,
02:54though estimates elsewhere run from $100,000
02:58up toward $190,000, depending on the variant
03:04and the contract that bought it.
03:07Fire all six in one salvo
03:10and you've just sent roughly a million dollars downrange
03:14in under 60 seconds.
03:17That's not a rounding error.
03:19That's the price of getting to hit something 70 kilometres away,
03:24invisible to the target until the rocket is already screaming down on top of it,
03:31and gone before anyone can shoot back.
03:36Extended range versions push that reach past 150 kilometres,
03:41and the bigger ATAKAMS missile, one to a pod instead of six,
03:47can hit something 300 kilometres off,
03:50roughly the distance from Kyiv to the Russian border and back again.
03:56None of this becomes real capability without the crew behind it, though,
04:02and that's where most of the training hours actually go.
04:06Fire control has automated the math.
04:10It has not automated the nerve required to sit next to a live rocket pod
04:15in the middle of a field you know is being watched,
04:19run a checklist under time pressure,
04:21and trust a truck to get you clear
04:25before someone corrects fire onto your exact coordinates.
04:30Crews drill the sequence hundreds of times in training
04:33before they ever do it for real.
04:36Because the entire doctrine depends on the movements being automatic.
04:42Muscle memory, not decision-making,
04:45is what saves a crew in the 90 seconds that matter.
04:59The mission starts long before the crew sees the target.
05:04A forward observer, sometimes a soldier with binoculars and a radio,
05:09sometimes a drone operator watching a screen miles away,
05:14spot something worth $150,000 a rocket.
05:19An ammunition depot, a command post,
05:23a bridge holding a supply line together.
05:26The coordinates get relayed through a digital fire network
05:30straight into the launcher's onboard computer.
05:34And here's the part that separates HIMARS
05:37from almost anything that came before it.
05:40The crew doesn't do math.
05:42There's no manual plotting.
05:44No radio operator reading grid coordinates off a paper map
05:48while someone cranks the tube by hand.
05:51The truck's own system calculates the firing solution.
05:56The launcher pivots and elevates itself
05:58and the crew's job shrinks down to arming the system
06:02and confirming the shot.
06:04From a cold stop to rounds in the air
06:07can take as little as a few minutes.
06:09Some crews have done it faster.
06:12Then the rocket leaves the rail
06:14and that's when the real countdown starts.
06:18Modern battlefields are covered by counter-battery radar,
06:22systems built for exactly one purpose.
06:25The instant a shell or rocket leaves a barrel,
06:28the radar tracks its arc backward
06:31and calculates, almost in real time,
06:34the exact patch of ground it launched from.
06:37Against old-style toad artillery,
06:40a gun that has to sit still
06:42and keep firing to be worth the trouble of setting up,
06:46that's a death sentence.
06:48The enemy gets a location,
06:50cross-references it with their own rocket artillery
06:53and sends counter-battery fire back at that spot.
06:57Analysts studying HIMARS in combat
07:00have put the window between launch detection
07:03and retaliatory fire landing at as little as 90 seconds
07:08on a pier battlefield.
07:10Ninety seconds.
07:12Not enough time to argue about it.
07:15Not enough time to double-check the map.
07:18Enough time to drive.
07:31Think about what that window actually demands.
07:34In 90 seconds, a section chief has to confirm
07:39the last rocket cleared the rail,
07:41call the crew off the position and commit to a route.
07:45All while the truck is still rocking from its own recoil.
07:50There's no pause to admire the launch.
07:53No slow-motion moment for the crew to watch their own work land.
07:59The gunner is already dropping the launcher back to travel position
08:03before the smoke has finished drifting off the rail.
08:07Because a raised launcher tube is a silhouette.
08:11And silhouettes get noticed.
08:13Every second spent looking at the sky instead of the road
08:17is a second borrowed from the margin that keeps the crew alive.
08:22This is the doctrine soldiers call shoot and scoot.
08:26And it isn't a nickname.
08:28It's the entire reason this weapon survives.
08:32The launcher fires its full six-rocket salvo in under a minute.
08:37And the crew is already moving
08:39before the last rocket has hit its target.
08:42They're not driving in a panic.
08:45They rehearse this.
08:47The route out is picked before the mission starts.
08:50Usually more than one,
08:52in case the first is blocked or already spotted.
08:56Within a couple of minutes,
08:58they've put real distance between themselves and the launch point.
09:02Off the open road where possible,
09:05using tree lines and terrain to break the radar's line of sight.
09:09By the time enemy artillery is actually laid on that grid square and firing,
09:16the truck that launched from it is gone.
09:19And what lands is a very expensive hole in an empty field.
09:35Crews rarely do this alone either.
09:39A HIMARS battery typically operates several launchers spread miles apart,
09:43sometimes firing in a staggered sequence rather than all at once,
09:49so that a radar operator on the receiving end sees launches coming from multiple directions within minutes of each other.
09:57That spread does two things at once.
10:00It forces the enemy to divide their counter battery response instead of concentrating it on one crew.
10:08And it makes the whole battery harder to wipe out in a single unlucky strike.
10:13Some units go further and park decoy vehicles,
10:19sometimes nothing more than a truck shaped heat source or an old launcher hull near real firing positions,
10:27specifically to draw a radar's attention and burn the enemy's limited stock of counter battery rounds on an empty target.
10:36None of it is glamorous.
10:39It's logistics dressed up as survival.
10:42And it works because it's boring and repeatable, not because it's clever once.
10:49Reloading is its own quiet piece of the puzzle.
10:53A spent launcher doesn't limp back to a rear depot to sit idle for a day.
10:59Resupply trucks carrying fresh six rocket pods meet crews at rally points well behind the risk zone.
11:09And a fresh pod can be swapped onto the launcher in a matter of minutes, not hours.
11:17That means the same three-man crew and the same truck can be back on a firing line,
11:24hitting a completely different target inside the same hour they fired their last salvo.
11:33The tempo is the point.
11:36A single launcher that can shoot, vanish, reload and shoot again,
11:42effectively behaves like several launchers to an enemy trying to track it.
11:55A single launcher that can shoot.
11:59Compare that to what Russian forces were doing for the first months of the war in Ukraine,
12:06before HIMARS arrived.
12:09Massed, towed artillery dug in and firing thousands of rounds a day from fixed positions.
12:17Because volume of fire was the whole strategy.
12:21One US artillery officer put it bluntly.
12:26Before HIMARS showed up, Russian batteries were firing on the order of 50,000 rounds a day.
12:34That kind of static barrage works right up until the other side has a weapon that can find you,
12:41hit you precisely and be gone before you can hit back.
12:47HIMARS didn't just add range to the battlefield.
12:50It punished the old way of doing artillery for standing still.
12:56But speed alone doesn't win a war.
12:59It buys survival for one launcher on one mission.
13:03What actually changes a battlefield is doing this over and over at scale,
13:10against targets that matter more than a single gun position.
13:14Take the Antonivsky Bridge, the crossing Russian forces depended on to resupply troops on the west bank of the Dnipro
13:24River near Kherson.
13:27Ukrainian HIMARS crews didn't hit it once.
13:30They hit it repeatedly through the summer of 2022, coming back to punch new holes almost as fast as Russian
13:41engineers could patch the old ones.
13:43When the bridge deck itself got too damaged to drive trucks across, the crews shifted targets to the ferries Russia
13:52started running instead, then to the pontoon bridge built as a backup.
13:58Every fix became a new target the moment it was finished.
14:03Visual evidence from the strikes showed the roadway pockmarked with more than a dozen distinct impact craters in a single
14:11stretch.
14:11The unmistakable signature of guided rockets landing exactly where they were aimed, rather than scattered across the surrounding fields.
14:31Each of those strikes was the same five-minute cycle, repeated by a rotating handful of launchers hundreds of times
14:40over.
14:41Locate.
14:42Locate.
14:43Calculate.
14:44Fire.
14:45Scoot.
14:46No single rocket broke the bridge.
14:49No single crew won that fight.
14:52What broke it was the same three-man drill running again and again, without a launcher ever staying in one
15:00place long enough to get killed for it.
15:03By September, the West Bank garrison was effectively cut off from reliable resupply.
15:10And Ukrainian forces retook Kherson two months later.
15:15That's a supply line strangled one $150,000 rocket at a time by crews whose entire job was to be
15:25somewhere else before the war could hit back.
15:29None of this happens without risk the crews carry personally.
15:33Every launch is a bet that the route out is clear, that the terrain breaks the radar's line of sight
15:40in time, that nothing goes wrong with the truck at the exact moment it needs to move.
15:47As of late 2022, US officials said no HIMARS launcher had been lost in five months of combat use, a
15:58run that owes less to luck and more to a crew that trusts the drill enough to execute it under
16:05real fire every single time.
16:09Ukraine has been supplied more than 40 of these launchers by the United States and its allies since the summer
16:16of 2022.
16:18And Russian military bloggers of all people have called it one of the most dangerous weapons on the field.
16:25That's not marketing. That's the enemy admitting the thing they can't reliably shoot back at.
16:35So here's the actual trade this weapon makes, and it's worth sitting with.
16:41A rocket that costs $150,000 hits a target that might be worth ten times that in destroyed ammunition or
16:52a wrecked command post.
16:53And the crew that fired it lives to do it again tomorrow.
16:58Because they spent more time practicing how to leave than how to stay.
17:04Every other era of artillery asked crews to hold ground and absorb the response.
17:12This one asks them to trust a truck, a clock and each other, and to be somewhere else entirely before
17:22the bill comes due.
17:24Was it worth building an entire doctrine around three people and a 90-second head start?
17:31Ask the launcher crews still doing this drill tonight, on a front line that hasn't gotten any quieter.
17:41And the answer is the same one it's always been in this job.
17:46It has to be. Because the alternative is standing still.
