00:00Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is pushing for a temporary moratorium on data centers and signed
00:05an executive order on Tuesday to create new rules for any future developments. For more on this
00:10Bloomberg's Miranda Davis joins us now live from Chicago. So Miranda just I mean honestly when I
00:17think of Chicago I don't really think of a place that has a ton of data centers but talk to
00:21us
00:21about why this is something that we saw happen. Yeah I think it's really easy to kind of think
00:27this isn't a huge problem for cities. This is a more suburban or rural issue where we're seeing a
00:33lot of pushback. But Chicago is geographically a pretty large place and the city already has 39
00:38data centers according to the mayor's office. So this is something that that they want to tackle
00:43and and kind of make sense if you think about the broader Chicago area. And how is it emblematic of
00:52just a broader trend because we haven't only seen pushback in Chicago. This is somewhat becoming
00:57more of a countrywide issue. Of course we saw the news a little bit earlier with Governor Hochul in New
01:05York. What are you kind of seeing at least happen in the Midwest? Yeah I mean Governor Hochul's efforts
01:11in New York I think have been the most successful so far in that it's a full moratorium on all
01:20hyperscaler
01:20data centers. But this is not new to the Midwest. There's been a lot of outcry from communities. In Ohio
01:28Republican Governor Mike DeWine did a it's a moratorium on tax credits that the state is giving out.
01:37Brandon Johnson's own governor here in Illinois. Governor Pritzker also is doing a similar measure
01:43trying to freeze the state's tax credits that they give out to these data centers. But we're still kind
01:49of in this space where we're seeing a lot of moratoriums. We're seeing a lot of states and
01:55municipalities that are trying to just say okay let's hold on on all of these developments that
02:00have been picking up so quickly and let's get a sense of of how this is going to impact energy
02:06usage
02:06and water usage in these places.
