Tua Tagovailoa will start Friday night in the Falcons' preseason opener against the Denver Broncos. While Atlanta hasn't declared a Week 1 starter at quarterback yet, The Morning Shift explains why Tua's only preseason reps may be tomorrow if quarterback Michael Penix Jr. gets fully cleared soon.
Transcript
00:00Well, we are a day away from the preseason opener between the Falcons and the Broncos.
00:04Kevin Stefanski has made his plans known for the quarterback position.
00:08The plan for playtime, it's in pencil.
00:11And we need to get through this practice to then get it in the pen.
00:16But feel good about it.
00:17What we'll do is we'll play our starters, a series, maybe 10 plays,
00:24see how that, you know, which comes first type of thing.
00:27And then we'll roll our guys through.
00:29So we'll also vary playtime by player.
00:33So there are some guys that may get more, some guys that may get less.
00:36But really trying to just get our guys ready for the season based on what we think they need in
00:40these games.
00:41Two will start in this game.
00:43And then each player, like I mentioned to you guys, I won't go up and down the roster,
00:48but just understand that we'll vary by player based on what they need.
00:54I think that in a perfect world, it's probably like a 14-play drive.
00:59You know what I mean?
01:00And that way it's just one drive and you're not even taking them off the field.
01:03But you're proud that they're able to grind out 14 plays in one drive, right?
01:06Just gassing the clock, doing things, running it left, running it right.
01:10But this is exactly kind of what you would expect the game plan to be, I guess, in week one?
01:17This is exactly what we talked about.
01:18We talked about this, I think it was last week, where we were talking about how many preseason snaps in
01:23the first one.
01:23And we were like, well, it depends.
01:26If they have a good series, it's it.
01:28They have seven or eight more.
01:30I think if they have seven or eight plays, you won't see them again.
01:32I agree.
01:32And I think if they don't have Oney Onwa, who we've seen take a lot of first-team reps at
01:38right tackle,
01:38if he indeed is where this depth chart that Stefanski may or may not have put together himself,
01:46if he's third in there and Jarrell is truly starting at right tackle with Juwan Taylor out,
01:54I would expect to see Jarrell move to left tackle when the twos come in and get a little work
02:02as a swing tackle there.
02:03And then either Walton or Oney Onwa come in at right tackle.
02:06That's what I think he means by guys are going to be different with workload.
02:10I'd be curious, too.
02:11And I think you're spot on.
02:13I think the understanding we kind of came to talking about this is as long as they don't go three
02:17and out,
02:17you'll see them for one drive.
02:18Right.
02:19And then if they do get a first down and all of a sudden you're running six, seven, eight plays
02:24and you can get a first down or two, then that's probably it.
02:27I am curious to see where that rotation goes.
02:29I'm glad you brought that up because Michael Jarrell is listed as the first-team right tackle.
02:34I wouldn't be shocked if we didn't see Jake, though.
02:37You know what I mean?
02:38Like, I wouldn't be shocked if Ethan Oney Onwa is the first right tackle in
02:42and Jake plays a couple of plays or whatever and it's just Michael Jarrell is this next person in.
02:47And they let Ethan Oney Onwa get, like, the whole first half.
02:50I wouldn't be shocked.
02:51Since we know that starters will be playing tomorrow night, Kevin did get into,
02:55Kevin Stefanski did get into what he wants to see from them.
02:58Yeah, again, just with the same mentality of getting our guys ready to play,
03:04we'll play, like I mentioned, a series, ten plays in this first game.
03:10We'll go to Indianapolis and practice versus the Colts next week.
03:13I'll give you our plan for Miami when we get to it,
03:16but it's all part of the plan in getting guys ready to play.
03:18I don't believe in showing a lot in the preseason
03:21and doing all sorts of exotic things and whatnot,
03:23so what we'll do is we'll have a very simple game plan on offense, defense, and special teams
03:28so that our players can play fast.
03:30It's a great opponent that we're going up against, which we're excited about.
03:34Good players.
03:35It's finally, you know, it's about time to see a different jersey
03:37and a different helmet, those type of things,
03:39where guys are way past seeing each other right now.
03:41So, excited about that opportunity, but bottom line is we're just getting ready for the season.
03:47I expect Jarrell to start at right tackle with Jake at left,
03:50and then as soon as the ones go out, Jarrell move to left,
03:53and either Walton or Oneonwa come in.
03:56That's kind of what he – that's what I expect.
03:58Nobody's told me that.
04:00Nobody really shows a lot.
04:03I think he just wants to get it out of their system.
04:05Hit a couple – hit somebody else.
04:08And I think he also wants to get, you know, live reps with the quarterback thing
04:12that's going on.
04:14But when you go to this – he seems noncommittal about the third game
04:20against the Dolphins.
04:21I think it depends on where Penix is at.
04:25But one of the things that I have started to gather
04:29and I've come to the conclusion based on how many coaches we seem to have in here
04:35these days and talking to other guys around the league is that scrimmage
04:40is a preseason game.
04:42They get more out of the joint practices with another team than they do
04:46a regular preseason game just because they can control scenarios
04:49and still get live reps and still get somebody else going against you,
04:54somebody that's not caring if they hurt you or hit you
04:56or break up the play or whatever.
04:59And so if that goes well and there is no – and Penix is not cleared,
05:03you might not see two again in the preseason.
05:06I'm curious – and this is not like a pushback.
05:09I am curious, though, why you think Michael Jarrell is going to have the first set
05:12just because of the depth chart they put out?
05:14Because I don't think we've seen anything in the last three days
05:16that would lead me to believe that.
05:20Because the depth chart's there.
05:21I think they want to get Jake in, and I think they maybe want to get Jarrell
05:25as many live snaps as they can too.
05:27And if you only take 10 plays, I think Oney Onwa could probably play
05:32into the fourth quarter.
05:35Because I think they want to get Jarrell as many live reps as they can
05:40and the ultimate test of a swing tackle is playing both spots.
05:47I think that – I feel the same way about what you said about Michael Jarrell
05:51about getting as many snaps as possible.
05:53I feel that way about Ethan Oney Onwa.
05:54I think that if he really is, he's been running ones at first-team right tackle.
05:59Like, okay, let's get him as many live snaps as we can in order to see how he performs
06:04in a game-time situation against a defensive front that is really good.
06:08Wasn't it last year that we saw Wilkinson play both when we knew that he had a chance?
06:15Because McGarry – if I'm mistaken, I don't think McGarry played in any preseason games last year.
06:20Last week it was day one.
06:23No, it wasn't day one, but he signed his deal.
06:26It was like the third day of camp or something he signed his deal, remember?
06:29Day one of pads, maybe?
06:30Because I remember him doing one-on-ones in the joint last year, joint practice that we –
06:34I can't remember who came in, but I remember – maybe it was Tennessee.
06:37But I remember him doing those because his dad was right behind me.
06:40And then he signed his deal.
06:41It was very early, though.
06:43I was going to say that.
06:43But, yeah, it was early.
06:44It was very early.
06:44But we didn't see a pre – he didn't – anyways, regardless of all that,
06:48I remember Wilkinson getting all those reps, and I wonder if they'll just do the same thing.
06:52I know it's a different staff, but you want to get him reps on both sides, right?
06:57As an ultimate swing, if he's going to be that guy.
06:59I was going to say, that's your question, if he's going to be that guy.
07:02I don't – I don't know.
07:05Right now I would like to think he's leading the – he's a clubhouse leader, right?
07:09For the swing tackle, so.
07:11We've got more from Kevin Stefanski on tomorrow night's game.
07:14We'll play that for you at 7.
07:16But we might like what we're seeing out of Bajon Robinson, Drake London,
07:19but there's another guy saying his offense is going to be the highest-scoring offense,
07:23not just this season, but ever.
07:25And it's Thursday, so we've got a life of squid.
07:28You know, they say everybody cheats at golf, but this dude took it to a whole other level.
