Total darkness, then sunset as full eclipse wows spectators in Spain

On Wednesday evening, August 12, 2026, a rare total solar eclipse transformed parts of northern Spain into an unforgettable twilight scene. In Buitrago de Lozoya, north of Madrid, spectators watched the sky suddenly darken shortly after 8:30 p.m. local time (18:30 GMT), with the total phase lasting barely a minute.

Cheers and applause erupted as the Moon completely covered the Sun, while bright Baily’s beads appeared along the horizon. The dramatic return of reds and blues made the scene resemble an extraordinary sunset.

Thousands gathered across Spain to experience the celestial event, with authorities deploying 25,000 police officers and nearly 100 aircraft and helicopters for security and emergency response.

The eclipse was also visible in Iceland, where totality brought darkness for more than two minutes in the west.
