The Maze — Armageddon 1969 (USA, Psychedelic Rock)

"Armageddon" is the only album by the American band The Maze, which was originally released in late 1968 (with some editions giving the year of release as 1969) by the small record company MTA Records. The band originated from the San Francisco area and played dark, heavy psychedelic rock (acid rock). Today, this album is considered a rare and sought-after "diamond" (cult classic) for collectors of 60s psychedelia. Who were The Maze? The band began its journey under the name Stonehenge playing folk rock, but soon changed its name, style and members. The members who recorded the album were: William (Wayne) Gardner – Organ Jeff Jensen – Guitar Kit Boyd – Bass Rick Eittreim – Drums The recording took place at the famous Golden State Recorders studios in San Francisco with producer Leo Kulka, between September 1967 and March 1968. The sound of the album Their music is characterized by: Heavy, wet instrumental sound that is strongly reminiscent of Iron Butterfly and the Doors. Distorted guitars with intense fuzz. Dark vocals full of reverb and melancholic lyrics
Armageddon Review by Richie Unterberger
Generic, at times tedious, minor-key psychedelia with strong hints of Iron Butterfly and the Doors. The Iron Butterfly elements gain the much stronger hand, with the occasional strong moment emerging when the vocal harmonies come to the fore. The CD adds six bonus tracks: four alternate takes of songs from the album and two folk-rock flavored tracks (including a female vocalist) cut in 1967, when they were known as Stonehenge.
