00:00Recently, we lost a legend, a journalist, Barbara Walters,
00:04who was on The Today Show for 15 years.
00:07What did her legacy leave behind?
00:09What did she mean to you guys?
00:10I think she said it best when we, a few years ago,
00:13when she retired from The View,
00:14they invited newswomen past and present,
00:17and everyone walked out and surprised her.
00:19And, I mean, everybody was there.
00:20Oprah was there. Everyone.
00:22And Barbara looked around and she said,
00:23you guys are my legacy.
00:25And I think we know that that is true.
00:27I mean, at The Today Show in particular,
00:29we're not here without Barbara Walters knocking down that door
00:32and doing it when there was no precedent,
00:34there was no example,
00:36there was no representation of that path.
00:39She did it.
00:40She blazed the trail like a pioneer.
00:42We are able to sit and have two women anchoring together,
00:44which is now totally normal because of what Barbara did.
00:48Yeah, you say Barbara Walters.
00:49Yeah, of course, she was a trailblazer.
00:51But think about that.
00:52That's five years of doing this together.
00:54When you first were sat together and you opened The Today Show,
00:57did it feel like a moment to you?
00:59It felt like a moment, but not because it was two women.
01:01It was because it was us.

01:03You know, it was just, it was,
01:04we literally held hands and said, let's do this.
01:08You know, and it was just.
01:09But it was a moment for women, I would think.
01:10I think it was.
01:11We didn't realize it because I remember I went to a SoulCycle spin class
01:15and I walked in shortly after Savannah and I had started
01:17and I sat in the same seat I always sit in,
01:19in Sue's SoulCycle class.
01:21And I sat in my chair and people started clapping.
01:23I was like, oh my God, someone has a birthday.
01:25You know, they always do, you know how they do.
01:27Yeah, you have a bike club.
01:28They root for each other.
01:29You got it.
01:30Yeah.

01:32Anyway, and as I was sitting, I was looking around
01:35and they were looking at me and I said, I go, what's going on?
01:38And they go, what you and Savannah did today.
01:41It was big.
01:42It was big.
01:43And I told Savannah, I said, oh my God, it mattered.
01:46Like, we didn't realize, I think, in the moment that it did.
01:49And now.
01:49Have you seen things change since you've started?
01:52You know, one thing that we notice a lot is in local news,
01:55which we came up in local news.
01:56You know, if somebody was gone and you needed to step up,
01:59it was always a guy and a girl.
02:01It was always a man and a woman.
02:02It was like Dina and Todd or whoever and whoever.
02:04They would never put two women.
02:05They would never say, oh, Todd's off tonight.
02:08Hoda, can you fill in Savannah?
02:09No, we can't have two women.
02:11Now we notice, because we do all these affiliate crosstalks,
02:13and we see it in local news all the time,
02:15there are a lot of female partnerships.
02:17So I don't know if that's probably not because of us,
02:20but now it's just more normal.
02:22And I think that's really cool.
02:23I think it is because of you guys, yeah.
02:25Todd shouldn't have taken all that time off.
02:27No, exactly right, yeah.
