House of the Dragon wrapped Season 3 with plenty of fire, death, and a massive battle, but after all that buildup, it's hard not to wonder why the HBO series still feels like it's searching for itself. Season 1 was a strong return to Westeros, Season 2 dragged, and Season 3 too often felt like it was trying to recreate Game of Thrones rather than carve out its own identity.

The finale finally delivered some of the spectacle fans have been waiting for, but great dragons can only carry a story so far. With the series heading toward its fourth and final season, the Dance of the Dragons is running out of time to turn impressive moments into a truly great story.

House of the Dragon is available to stream on HBO Max.
