00:01Illusion, the art of tricking the brain,
00:05distorting the senses, challenging perception.
00:08You can't trust what you see, even with your own eyes.
00:12Meet the Masters of Illusion.
00:19Hello, everyone. I'm Dean Payne, and welcome to Masters of Illusion.
00:23What's real and what is not?
00:26That's a question you may be asking yourself a lot over the next half hour.
00:29But that's the beauty of magic performed by Masters.
00:33Will you be entertained?
00:35Ladies and gentlemen, Wayne Hoffman.
00:37I was just introducing the whole show.
00:40Sorry, I'm talking backstage.
00:41I'm working on something really quick.
00:43It's a whole thing about recycling.
00:45I got two crushed cans, green or red.
00:47Which one do you want?
00:49Green.
00:51Your call. Watch the dents in the can.
00:53Because if you imagine we can take the dents out,
00:55the dents will start to come out of the can.
00:57Now we still have a hole.
00:58But if you imagine we can grab it and throw it away.
01:01If I just snap, you see the hole reseals itself.
01:04It's actually resealed.
01:05Tap on it.
01:05Re-sealed.
01:06Re-sealed.
01:07Now we can refill it, too.
01:08Listen, there's nothing in there yet.
01:09But imagine we can refill it.
01:13It's starting to refill.
01:14Keep going.
01:14Now make it cold.
01:15Here, feel it.
01:16You'll feel it getting colder.
01:17It's very cold.
01:18It's getting colder.
01:18And colder.
01:19I'm a big fan of recycling.
01:23And this one's for you, bud.
01:24Because you're going to be doing a lot of introing
01:26and a lot of talking for the show.
01:27So here you go.
01:29That's pretty good.
01:35This next act can't just be a lucky yes.
01:38It's beyond prediction.
01:41What's the explanation?
01:43Must be magic.
01:44So let's hear it for Eric Jones.
01:48Good evening, folks.
01:50Thank you so much for having me back.
01:51I want to show you all something interesting.
01:53Here in my pocket, I've got a single envelope.
01:55In that envelope happens to be a playing card with a prediction,
01:59a commitment to your astonishment.
02:01Ma'am, what is your name?
02:03Valeria.
02:03If it's okay, I'd like to try something with you.
02:06You, me, and my pack of playing cards.
02:08Specifically, I've got two black kings here on top of the pack,
02:12which I will leave here for just a few moments, Valeria.
02:15I need you to choose a card.
02:16I'll pass through the cards just like this
02:18whenever you get the notion.
02:19I want you to say the word stop.
02:20Wherever you say stop, that'll be your card.
02:22Does that sound fair?
02:23Yes.
02:24Stop.
02:24Would you like the uppermost card where you said stop,
02:26or the lowermost card?
02:27Completely up to you.
02:28The uppermost card.
02:29Ooh.
02:30That is not a bad card at all.
02:32Now, if it's okay with you, I'd like to mark this card,
02:35because the truth of the matter is I could have another card
02:37just like this in the pack.
02:39So I'm going to ask you a couple of personal questions.
02:41What's your middle name?
02:42Al.
02:43Al.
02:44Al.
02:44Al.
02:47How tall are you?
02:485'4".
02:495'4".
02:49That's admirable.
02:50I like that.
02:505'4".
02:52So we got that there as well.
02:54Last but not least, did you happen to have a pet growing up as a child?
02:57Yes.
02:58You did.
02:58Was it a dog?
02:59A cat?
02:59A gerbil?
02:59A snake?
03:00A dog?
03:00What kind of dog?
03:02What was your Rottweiler's name?
03:03B-E-B-A.
03:06B-E-B-A.
03:08Now, there's no way that I could know any of this information.
03:11Your middle name, your height, or the name of your childhood pet.
03:14That's true, yes?
03:15That all checks out.
03:17Are you a science fan at all?
03:19I am.
03:20You are.
03:20Have you ever heard that matter cannot be created or destroyed?
03:25You have?
03:26You may have also heard that it cannot occupy two places at once.
03:30Now, folks, what you're about to see is going to look like trick photography.
03:35So if you need to blink, do it now.
03:39Watch.
03:46You know, at the very beginning, I was hoping that I could make a connection with one of you,
03:49and I got to learn a little bit about you, as a matter of fact.
03:52But I also said that I was going to make a prediction, a commitment to your astonishment
03:56that I mentioned that I wouldn't touch until the very end.
04:01Now, wouldn't it be interesting, wouldn't it be strange, in fact,
04:05if this single playing card that's been in your view this entire time
04:11would happen to be your three of clubs with your middle name, your height,
04:18and the name of your childhood pet.
04:23Thank you, guys.
04:31What you're about to witness defies the basic laws of matter.
04:36And who better to attempt such a feat than Anna de Guzman.
04:43Thank you all so much.
04:45I'm here with a lovely volunteer from the audience.
04:47Miss, what's your name?
04:48Celine.
04:48Celine, what is your favorite thing to drink?
04:51Water.
04:52Water.
04:53That's super exciting.
04:56But you normally drink water with a straw, right?
05:02That's pretty crazy.
05:04Can you hold out your finger like this?
05:06Right?
05:07Just do this finger.
05:08Yeah.
05:09Can you try to balance it?
05:11So we're going to hold it.
05:12Perfect.
05:13All right.
05:14All right.
05:14Okay.
05:14Let go.
05:21That's crazy.
05:22You know how it works, right?
05:23I just got the static from your hair.
05:25What?
05:25Yeah.
05:26Watch if we just get more.
05:28Watch what happens.
05:30You can make it stick on one finger.
05:32You all see that?
05:34That's insane.
05:36Yeah.
05:38If I could do it right, you should be able to...
05:47Can I see your purse?
05:48Sure.
05:50Hold it out like this.
05:52Yes.
05:52I'm going to put the straw in.
05:55Like I said, you see.
05:59Hold tight.
06:00Don't do that.
06:01Oh, God.
06:02Oh, God.
06:03What do you have in here?
06:07It's still going.
06:08Okay.
06:09Oh.
06:09Okay.
06:10Oh, God.
06:11It's...
06:12How did you...
06:13Where did you...
06:14How...
06:17It's bigger than the bandwagon.
06:22Next, an impossible prediction by Rob Lake.
06:26When we come back...
06:37I know these illusions are beyond belief, but don't worry.
06:40You're wide awake.
06:42This magician, however, would like to take us on a journey
06:45through his dreams.
06:47Here's Rob Lake.
06:53Last night, I had the strangest dream.
06:56It was so strange, it actually woke me up in the middle of the night.
06:58So I wrote every detail of my dream down on a piece of paper,
07:01and I see all that paper inside of this box.
07:03That way, I can show it to you tonight.
07:04But before I can show you my dream, I have to find a dream date.
07:09Who wants to help out and go on a dream date with me?
07:13Excellent.
07:13Right here in the front.
07:15And, uh, excellent, excellent.
07:17Oh, are you guys together?
07:18Yeah.
07:19Well, I'm going to steal your date for a moment.
07:21I'll let you stay back down there.
07:22Have a seat right here to my right.
07:24Have a seat right there.
07:25And what is your name?
07:27Cody.
07:28Excellent.
07:28Cody, I have a key to this box.
07:30I want you to hold on this key.
07:31Keep it very safe and secure.
07:33Thank you, sir.
07:34All right.
07:34Tonight, I had a dream that the audience set me up on a blind date with you after the show.
07:38Really?
07:38We're going to let them decide all of the details of our date.
07:41Like here, um, let's see.
07:43Here in the front, the guy in the vest.
07:45Where do we go on our date?
07:46Anywhere in the entire world, where was our date?
07:48Japan.
07:49Oh, Japan.
07:50I absolutely love Japan.
07:52Excellent.
07:53All right, here and in the middle of the front here, what did we have for dinner?
07:58A poppy seed salad.
07:59My favorite.
08:00Really? Yes.
08:00Excellent.
08:01The gentleman in the glasses on the second row back there.
08:04What did we do on our dream date after we had our poppy seed salad?
08:08Uh, you went to a sauna.
08:10Ah, so soothing.
08:11Perfect.
08:12Now, lady here in the front, do you have any coins in your pocket?
08:15I don't have coins, but, um, let me see.
08:18But I do have cash.
08:19What do you got?
08:2020.
08:21$20.
08:21Oh, big spinner tonight.
08:23Excellent.
08:23All right, Cody, back to you for a moment.
08:25Who did you come here tonight with?
08:26I came here with my boyfriend.
08:27Oh, your boyfriend?
08:28Yes.
08:28The guy who tried to come up on stage and run my date.
08:32And what is your boyfriend's name?
08:35BJ.
08:35Has BJ taken you to Japan yet?
08:37No.
08:37Oh, so Mr. Magic is ahead right now.
08:40Cody, come right over here.
08:41Stand right here.
08:42I'll be right back.
08:43This box has been hanging up in the air, out of my reach the entire time you could all
08:46see it.
08:47No one could have possibly touched it.
08:49Cody, you still have your key?
08:51Yes.
08:51Bring your key over here.
08:53I'd like you to please remove the lock from the box.
09:00Yep.
09:00Carry the lock to the center of the stage.
09:01I will meet you there.
09:03This box was out of my reach, in the air, above your heads this entire time.
09:06You saw it.
09:07No one could have possibly touched it.
09:08Inside, I have a jar.
09:10This jar is sealed airtight.
09:11Yes?
09:12Yeah.
09:12Inside is a piece of paper.
09:13Please remove the paper.
09:16Excellent.
09:18And I want you, Cody, to hold this corner right here, please.
09:21Check this out.
09:22Last night, I had a dream that I was on a blind date with Cody.
09:27We went to Japan, where we had the most amazing gourmet Japanese version of a poppy seed salad
09:34you could ever imagine.
09:36After that, well, we hit off great in the sauna.
09:40The total cost of our date was only $20.
09:43But the best part of all was, BJ had to pay.
09:50Cody!
09:53And BJ!
09:57Watch the astounding skill of Robert Ramirez when we come back.
10:12This illusionist would like to pay some respect to the magicians who came before him with
10:17an act that stands up to the test of time.
10:20Let's hear it for Robert Ramirez.
10:26Ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to show you one of my favorite magic tricks.
10:29This is what we call magic apparatus, a word that's not used very often.
10:32It used to be really popular in the 60s and the 70s.
10:35It kind of started dying in the 80s and 90s, and now nobody really does this kind of magic.
10:38But it was shown to me, and I just thought it was so incredible that I had to show you.
10:42So what an opportunity we have that you get to see this.
10:44A little history.
10:45It's called Cube Unrelease.
10:46It was invented by a man named Jack Hughes in 1956.
10:49It's three pieces, but we're only going to talk about two of the pieces at the moment.
10:52So it's got this wood frame, which we'll get to afterwards.
10:55Mainly, it's this two ropes with a red block in the center.
11:00Perfect.
11:01Two ropes.
11:02We'll do this one at a time so you can see.
11:03Stay.
11:04Stay.
11:05Solid piece of rope all the way through.
11:07There's no magnets or it doesn't come undone or anything like that.
11:10That's rope number one.
11:11Rope number two looks exactly the same.
11:13Smells exactly the same as well.
11:15Don't ask me what it smelled like.
11:17It just smells exactly the same.
11:18We have the red block here.
11:20It's solid on all sides.
11:24Yes, it hurts my knuckles.
11:25Yes, it hurts my knuckles.
11:26There's two holes on the inside and that's so you can see right through.
11:30But really, it's for the two ropes.
11:32So we're going to place the two ropes through the cube.
11:35The goal is, the magic trick here is, I'm going to get the ropes to melt right through
11:40that solid cube without touching the cube.
11:43So we're going to place it right there.
11:44I'm going to take one side of the ropes on each side and cross them.
11:47That way it gives me a little heftier grab there.
11:49Okay, perfect.
11:49On the count of three, I'm going to pull the two ropes without letting go.
11:52The ropes will magically and swiftly pass through the red cube.
11:55On the count of three.
11:56Here we go.
11:56One, two, three.
11:57You'll see that the two ropes go straight through.
11:59It's pretty impressive.
12:00I know.
12:01I know.
12:021956 was pretty crazy.
12:03But whenever I do this trick, people always immediately assume they say,
12:05Oh, I bet you that's just slight of rope.
12:08I have no idea what that means, but it must be some type of magic that happens.
12:12So again, solid cube all the way through.
12:16Great.
12:17So we're going to put the rope back through, back through the cube like this.
12:20The frame is so that it lets me not do what we call slight of rope.
12:24It's a solid wood frame here.
12:27The cube goes right there.
12:29Da da da da.
12:33Ropes locked into place.
12:35And just like we had it at the very start, we have this beautiful piece of apparatus.
12:40Now, the goal is to do the exact same trick, to do the exact same trick,
12:44where the cube is going to go through the rope.
12:46But this time, I will not touch the ropes in any way, shape, or form.
12:49I'm solely only going to touch the cube, and the cube will still melt right through the ropes.
12:53Here we go.
12:54Close up on this.
12:56Not this.
12:57This.
12:58This is hurting my thighs.
13:00All right, here we go.
13:00I should have...
13:01All right.
13:02All right.
13:02This is exactly how it would have looked in 1956.
13:05Full squat and everything.
13:07All right, here we go.
13:13Ladies and gentlemen, this is Cube Unrelease from 1956.
13:18Thank you so much.
13:20Thank you, thank you, thank you.
13:25Let's give a round of applause and a warm welcome to our very own May Wynn.
13:31Hits.
13:32There was a fire to make.
13:35To make a part of the sea.
13:40It was a beautiful thing.
13:47Oh, hard.
13:48All these memories, that County only чиних to be in serious terms.
13:55I was born to be free
14:00The walking field
14:02The skin beneath the dirt
14:04And the six-inch years
14:06The edge of the earth
14:08Wants to make a deal
14:10Cropedians pulling me down the hill
14:14And I'm fighting, I'm fighting
14:35I'm fighting, I'm fighting
14:39Oh, oh, oh
14:59I don't quite understand
15:01How this next one is done
15:02But maybe you do
15:04Dan Sperry is up next
15:14This performer has been described
15:16As eccentric, mysterious
15:18And now
15:20Pyrokinetic
15:21Here's Dan Sperry
15:25Yeah, magic show
15:27Now usually magic, right
15:29Deals with the supernatural
15:30Sometimes it even delves into the super
15:33Unnatural
15:34I know, I know, I know
15:35That's what we're going to do right now
15:36You and me
15:37Who are you, by the way?
15:38Gabby
15:38Gabby, face me like that
15:39Stick your hands out like Frankenstein
15:41Right
15:41Step up a little bit
15:42And yeah, pinch your fingers together
15:44And make like two fists
15:45Like you're riding an invisible bike
15:46In a moment
15:47You're going to make a choice
15:49I'm going to demonstrate
15:50But the choice is going to be yours
15:52So you don't have to copy me
15:54So when I say go
15:55You're just going to lower one of those fists
15:57Just like I did
15:58Ready?
15:59Go
16:00Perfect
16:00So that's the one
16:01That we're going to get rid of
16:02You kept that one
16:03Keep that fist
16:03And hold it against your heart
16:05Perfect
16:06Gabby
16:06I have a little friend with me
16:08In my pocket
16:09Again, getting to the supernatural
16:11Super unnatural aspect of magic
16:12This is little Gabby
16:14You can see the resemblance
16:16Gabby, did you have like a nickname in school
16:18Or anything like that?
16:19Gabs
16:20Gabs
16:20All right
16:21So this is going to be little Gabs, right?
16:23In order to invoke that power
16:25I'm just going to pass it around you
16:26Don't move
16:27You won't feel anything
16:28And I'm not going to touch you
16:30Just like that
16:31Gabby
16:32Do you feel any different?
16:34Yes
16:34Yes
16:35Okay, good
16:35Because so does little Gabs
16:37Now we need to add an element
16:39That element is fire
16:41If I take a little bit of that fire
16:42From this lighter
16:43You'll see that little bit of the element
16:44Causes little Gabby
16:46That means we've made a connection
16:47Starts to stand up
16:49If I take
16:50So that's your left hand
16:50So if I actually singe
16:51And burn a little bit of the left hand
16:53Right there
16:54Watch
16:55Just like that
16:56If I snap
16:56Boom
16:56That's not a good sign
16:57But
16:58If I singe a little bit
17:00Of little Gabby's hand
17:04Gabby
17:05Did you feel anything now?
17:07So yes
17:08What I want you to do
17:09Go ahead
17:10Extend that fist
17:11Spread your fingers
17:12Peek
17:14And show them
17:17Magic show
17:20You're done
17:21Thanks Gabby
17:22The rest of you go to church
17:27We never know what to expect
17:29With this magician
17:30He constantly challenges
17:32What we thought
17:33Was possible
17:34Here's the one and only
17:35Ed Alonzo
17:41Okay
17:42Watch closely
17:44And at home
17:45Get up nice and cozy
17:47To your flat screens
17:48Because I'm about to show you
17:50My magic box
17:52It's right back here
17:54But let's take a look inside
17:56Ah, what do we have?
17:59Feather
18:04Check this out
18:07Empty
18:08Go
18:18Let's do it again
18:34One more
18:36That's impossible
18:38Take a look
18:40Oh yes
18:45Woo
19:07Well that's it for this edition of Masters of Illusion
19:10We hope you'll join us next time for more amazing magic
19:13Until then
19:14I'm Dean Cain
19:14Thank you for watching
