Fotheringay — Fotheringay 2 (1970) (UK, Folk Rock)
In the fall of 1970, Fotheringay began working on songs for their new, second album. They had the material. "Sandy had a collection of songs we could record," recalls Gerry Conway in the film "Sandy Denny — Under Review" (2006). Clearly, Fotheringay could have achieved much greater success, as it featured experienced musicians who created a high-quality sound, as well as a powerful female vocalist of the time with a talent for songwriting. Denny's voice was still in full force in 1970-71, and, as some have written, "... was perhaps in better shape than ever. And Fotheringay itself was a harmonious, tasteful, high-class group." It might therefore have been hoped that their 1970 album would be the first in a long series. However, good things never last: in December 1970, after touring and recording more tracks for a new album, Sandy decided to disband his band and pursue a solo career. The band's second album was never released, and the tapes containing the songs disappeared into the record company's archives. However, in 2007, 30 years after Sandy Denny's death and almost 20 years after the passing of Trevor Lucas, the BBC announced that Fotheringay guitarist Jerry Donahue would attempt to complete this once-abandoned project. Finally, Donahue received permission to access the original archive tapes, and after reaching an agreement with Joe Black, a representative of Universal, it became clear that the material from the forgotten album could be found. The main problem was that none of the songs on the album were fully completed when the band broke up. However, all of Sandy and Trevor Lucas's vocal tracks, as well as the rhythm section's tracks, had been recorded. It was clear that more work would be needed to assemble the album's mosaic. To do this, Donahue invited his old friends Pat Donaldson and Gerry Conway to his studio in Clitheroe. Incredibly, all the tapes survived in the record company's archives. 01. John The Gun - 0:00
