00:00On July 19th, 2026, Ukraine's Interior Ministry announced something that, on the surface,
00:07looked like nothing really out of the ordinary. What they unveiled on that day appear to be just
00:12another in a long line of naval drones Ukraine has fielded since 2022. This one, an unmanned
00:18surface vessel built by a combat diver unit. But the detail that made this one worth notice
00:24wasn't the boat itself, it was who built it. The unit is Omega, the Ukrainian National Guard's
00:30special purpose center. Its diving detachment is the same team that days earlier had via drone
00:36destroyed a Russian Su-24M bomber at the Saki Air Base in Occupy Crimea, demolishing it before it
00:43could take off on a strike mission. The people who blew up that Russian bomber with weapons that rained
00:48down from the sky were the same people designing the boats that will carry the next generation of
00:53Ukrainian drones out to sea. We want to spend this video on that boat, as well as what it says

00:59how Ukraine fights a naval war with a very limited navy, and on the multi-year arc of naval drone
01:05innovation that made all this happen. The bomber operation is important here, because it's the
01:10reason this particular boat story matters beyond the usual drone of the week coverage. Su-24Ms are
01:16just one of the types of aircraft that have been used to drop glide bombs on Ukrainian cities and
01:21frontline positions. So removing one before it ever gets airborne is much more strategically important
01:27than shooting down a drone or damaging a ship at sea. However, it's also significantly more difficult,
01:33requiring people physically getting close enough to a heavily defended Russian airbase to do the job
01:38pretty much by hand. That's the resume of the unit that then turned around and built its own naval drone.
01:44It isn't a research and development team learning about combat second-hand from someone else's
01:49after-action reports. It's a special operations unit designing hardware based on missions its own
01:55people just ran. Let's start with what the Omega team actually built, because the details matter.
02:01According to Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs, the vessel was developed by the diving
02:05detachment's own engineers working in partnership with the Ukrainian civilian IT company,
02:10not through the country's centralized defense procurement system. Photos released by the
02:16Ministry show the boat powered by a Japanese-made Suzuki outboard engine and fitted with a satellite
02:21communications terminal, which suggests a platform designed to operate and stay in contact with its
02:26controllers well beyond visual range. The boat was bluntly described as a mothership that carries
02:32FPV drones, which then fly on to destroy the enemy. That's the whole concept in one sentence.
02:37So the boat itself isn't a weapon, but just a fancy delivery truck, closing the distance to the target zone.
02:44Then come the actual killing machines, which are the tried and true first-person view drones,
02:49which need to launch from as close to the enemy as possible and arrive with enough battery left to
02:53maneuver and strike. The idea apparently came out of the Zaporizhia sector, where Omega's teams were
02:59already flying FPV drones against Russian logistics and equipment behind the front line. There, they were running
03:05into the same wall every operator in this war eventually hit. Batteries only carry a drone so
03:10far before there's no power left for the strike itself. But with a delivery system, you can
03:15theoretically extend that range much further. A naval platform solves the range problem the same way a
03:21forward operating base solves it for infantry. Get closer before you commit the expensive, fragile part
03:27of the system. The National Guard had suggested it was already having unmanned teams operating in southern Ukraine
03:32with this broader approach. Small boats plus FPV drones plus the diving detachment's own tactical experience
03:39to destroy Russian vehicles, armored equipment, fuel tankers and electrical infrastructure. The goal is for the
03:46so-called technology, which translates to drones and remote operated systems, to save the lives of Ukrainian fighters
03:52while increasing the rate at which Russian forces are eliminated. And the unit isn't stopping at strike
03:58missions. One report indicated that possible iterations of the boat are meant to carry FPV interceptor drones,
04:05turning the same hull into a piece of mobile coastal air defense. The Interior Ministry has not released
04:10the vessel's official name or its technical specifications, so consider the engine and communications
04:16details as based only on what the photographs show rather than a full-spec sheet. But the intent behind the
04:22boat is not ambiguous. But the concept of the naval mothership isn't really new. Ukraine has been
04:27fielding FPV-carrying sea drones for a few years by this point, from the Navy's Barracuda system to
04:33Defense Intelligence's Katran. What is new is who's doing the building. A frontline special operations unit,
04:41the same divers who plan and execute underwater sabotage missions against Russian aircraft, designed and
04:47built a naval drone with a private tech partner, rather than waiting on the normal defense
04:51industry pipeline. That's part of a pattern that increasingly defines how Ukraine fights this war.
04:57The operators who use the weapons are becoming the people who make them, cutting out layers of
05:02procurement and iterating at the speed of the frontline, rather than the speed of a ministry.
05:06To understand why that pattern matters so much for the naval war specifically, we need to back up to
05:12where Ukraine's sea drone program started. Because this is a story about a country that began the full-scale
05:17invasion with essentially no navy, and ended up four years later running one of the most closely watched
05:23experiments in unmanned naval warfare anywhere in the world. When Russia invaded in February 2022,
05:30Ukraine's conventional navy was not a serious factor in the Black Sea. Its most capable surface
05:35combatants had already been lost or scuttled in the opening days of the war to keep them out of Russian
05:40hands, and Russia's Black Sea Fleet, based at Sevastopol in occupied Crimea, had effective control
05:46of the water. That fleet blockaded Ukrainian ports, threatened amphibious landings near Odessa,
05:52and served as a floating missile platform, launching missiles at targets across the country.
05:57Ukraine's first real answer was the sinking of the cruiser Moskva, the fleet's flagship in April 2022,
06:04using Neptune anti-ship missiles. That was a shock to Russian naval planning, and the first sinking of an
06:09enemy flagship since the Russo-Japanese war in the early 20th century. But this was a one-off missile
06:15strike, not a repeatable system. Ukraine needed something it could build at scale, cheaply, without
06:21a shipyard. That something turned out to be a small, low-profile, explosive-laden boat that barely rises
06:27above the waterline, hard to see on radar, and even harder to hit. Ukrainian developers began designing
06:32what would become the Magura series in the spring of 2022, and by October, early prototype boats that
06:39preceded the operational Magura V-5 took part in a raid on Sevastopol harbour itself, the Russian
06:44Black Sea fleet's home base. The initial raid damaged the fleet's newest flagship at the time,
06:49the frigate Admiral Makarov, along with the minesweeper. The drones didn't sink anything that
06:54night, but the raid proved the concept worked. A handful of cheap, uncrewed boats had gotten deep
06:59inside Russia's most heavily defended naval base in the Black Sea. From there, the programme moved fast.
07:05Ukraine's Military Intelligence Directorate, or the GUR, became the lead operator of the Magura
07:11family, and by 2023, the boats were already ranging far from Ukrainian shores. In May 2023,
07:18three Magura drones struck and damaged the Ivankurs, a large Russian intelligence collection
07:23ship hundreds of miles from Ukraine. The Security Service of Ukraine, the SBU, fielded a parallel naval
07:29drone family called Seababy, and in July 2023, Seababy drones loaded with close to a ton of
07:35explosives struck the Kerch Strait Bridge, the physical and symbolic link between occupied Crimea
07:40and mainland Russia. Seababy drones were later adapted to lay naval mines, to carry rocket launchers,
07:46and to strike additional Russian vessels near Novorossis once the fleet relocated there.
07:51The turning point that really cemented naval drones as a strategic weapon,
07:55rather than a nuisance, came at the start of 2024. In late January, Magura V-5 drone sank
08:02the Tarantul-class missile corvette Ivanovet, and in mid-February, they sank the Rapucha-class
08:07landing ship Cesar Kunikov. Those were the first confirmed sinkings of enemy warships by naval drones
08:13in the history of naval warfare, not just in this war, but full stop. Within roughly a year of that
08:19first Sevastopol raid, according to reporting from outlets that have tracked the campaign closely,
08:24Ukrainian sea drone and missile strikes combined had sunk or damaged around two dozen Russian vessels.
08:30And by 2023 and into 2024, the bulk of the Black Sea Fleet had relocated from Sevastopol,
08:36several hundred kilometres to the east, to a more distant and initially safer base at Novorossiysk,
08:42although that protection proved temporary. That relocation is one of the starker outcomes of
08:47the entire war. A country without a meaningful navy helped force the large portion of a nuclear-powered
08:53Black Sea fleet away from its traditional base at Sevastopol, using boats that, individually,
08:58cost a few hundred thousand dollars each. Even the retreat to Novorossiysk didn't fully
09:03solve Russia's problem. Ukrainian sea drones kept extending their range, eventually striking targets
09:08close to 500 miles from the Ukrainian-controlled coastline, and the Magura family kept adding capability.
09:14By early 2025, Magura V-5 drones, fitted with what Ukraine has called the Sea Dragon infrared homing
09:21missile, adapted from the old Soviet R-73 air-to-air missile, shot down Russian Mi-8 helicopters
09:28operating near Crimea, the first confirmed case of a naval surface drone killing an aircraft. A larger
09:34variant, the Magura V-7, has since been fitted with air defense missiles of its own. What started as an
09:40improvised speedboat with an explosive charge in the bow, had within about three years become a
09:46multi-role naval platform capable of striking ships, hitting land targets, and shooting down aircraft.
09:52That capability curve is the direct ancestor of the mothership concept behind the Omega boat.
09:58Once Ukraine had reliable radar-evading surface drones that could survive a transit across open water,
10:04the logical next step was to stop treating them purely as one-way explosive craft and start using
10:09them as delivery platforms for other systems. The Navy leaned into this publicly in mid-July,
10:142026, demonstrating a multi-layered naval drone operation in which its Barracuda drone boat system
10:20attacked an observation post, while a separate drone-carrying surface vessel launched reconnaissance
10:25and FPV strike drones. The boat's onboard drones can loiter, confirm a target, and hand off a strike
10:32faster than a single-purpose kamikaze craft ever could, which directly increases precision and effectiveness.
10:38The other branch of this mothership trend has been air defense, and it may end up being the more
10:43consequential one for the war's next phase. But before we get there, make sure you're subscribed
10:48to the military show for daily news. In April 2026, an uncrewed Ukrainian sea drone shot down a Russian
10:55Shahid drone using an interceptor launch from its own deck, an event Ukraine described as a world
11:00first for naval platforms. This comes from the fact that sea drones are a practical launch platform for
11:06interceptor systems like Sting, precisely because they can sit offshore along the Black Sea coastline
11:11and defend cities from directions and distances that ground-based air defense can't easily cover.
11:17Ukraine's Military Intelligence Directorate has also described an incident in which Russian
11:22Coast Guard personnel tried to stop a group of Ukrainian naval drones with small arms fire,
11:27only for the platform to launch FPV drones that surrounded and destroyed several of the Russian
11:32personnel involved. But this doesn't only affect sea combat. Ukraine's mothership logic has been
11:38showing up across every domain where it operates uncrewed systems, so this is just one branch of a
11:43much wider structural shift.
11:44On land, in mid-July 2026, Ukraine's 123rd Separate Territorial Defense Brigade used an improvised landing
11:53craft, ferrying a machine-gun-equipped ground robot onto the Russian-occupied shoreline at the Kimburn
11:58Spit in Mykoliv Oblast and deploying it directly into a combat role. This was reportedly the first time a
12:05maritime platform has delivered, landed and enabled a ground robot to carry out a mission on an occupied
12:10coastline. In the air, Ukrainian forces are using heavy bomber-type UAVs to transport one-way attack
12:16ground robots for follow-on strikes on Russian positions. This extends the operational range of
12:22those ground robots, while keeping the larger, more expensive bomber drones farther from Russian air
12:27defenses during the actual attack run. Put all of that together, boats launching FPV drones and
12:33interceptors, boats delivering ground robots ashore, bombers delivering ground robots inland, and a clear
12:39doctrine emerges. Ukraine has built an entire logistics layer out of uncrewed platforms whose
12:44only job is to get a smaller, cheaper, more expendable weapon close enough to matter without
12:49risking a person or an expensive asset to do it. This is also where the who-built-it detail comes
12:55in.
12:56Ukraine's drone industry has never been a single top-down program the way a traditional defense
13:01procurement system usually works. It's a decentralized ecosystem of private manufacturers,
13:06volunteer-funded workshops, and now, increasingly, frontline units themselves designing hardware based
13:13on what they've learned from months of actual combat use. For example, Ukrainian manufacturers
13:17like Frontline Robotics report making minor design changes to their drones as often as 20 times a month,
13:24with major updates roughly every six months. This is an iteration speed that would be almost
13:28unimaginable inside a conventional defense acquisition process in most western militaries. Omega's
13:35diving detachment building its own boat with a private IT partner fits squarely inside that same
13:40culture. These are the operators who know exactly where their FPV drones will run out of battery,
13:46exactly how Russian coastal defenses respond to a low, fast-moving hull, and exactly what a diving
13:51team needs from a support platform during a special operations mission. And instead of writing up
13:57requirements and waiting for someone else to build it, they built it themselves. Ukraine's naval drone
14:02program has also started shaping how other militaries think about this kind of warfare,
14:07which is its own signal of how far the technology has come from those first shaky prototype runs into
14:13Sevastopol Harbor. The United States military used armed uncrewed surface vessels in combat for the first
14:19time during operations in Iran. And before that, US Special Operations Forces had tested Ukrainian
14:25Magura maritime drones during exercises in the Philippines, a region with its own obvious interest in cheap,
14:31fast, hard-to-detect naval strike craft, given the tensions in the South China Sea.
14:37None of that means the Magura family or its offshoots are about to become standard-issue equipment for
14:42the US Navy. But it does mean the operational lessons Ukraine has generated fighting a much larger
14:47navy, with almost no fleet of its own, are being studied, and in at least one case directly
14:52borrowed by the country's largest military backer. That's a fairly unusual position for Ukraine to be in.
14:57In most areas of this war, Ukraine has been on the receiving end of Western technology and doctrine.
15:03In naval drones, the flow is partly reversed. It's also worth being precise about what Katran
15:08and Barracuda actually are, since both names get used loosely in coverage of this story,
15:13and they aren't the same thing. Katran is operated by Ukraine's Defense Intelligence
15:17Directorate, and like the Magura family, has largely functioned as a strike and reconnaissance
15:21platform in its own right. Barracuda belongs to the Navy, and per the Navy's own July 14th
15:27demonstration, it's built specifically around the mothership role, attacking a target directly
15:32with its own onboard systems, and then launching subordinate FPV drones to extend the engagement.
15:38The Omega boat sits closer to the Barracuda concept than to a single-purpose strike drone,
15:43like the early Magura variants. A carrier first, a weapon second. What distinguishes it from either
15:48government programme is simply its origin, a combat unit's own engineers working with a private
15:53partner outside the formal procurement channel. It's also worth putting a number on how fast this
15:58ecosystem is scaling more broadly. Ukraine produced roughly 10,000 ground robotic systems in 2025,
16:05and is aiming for around 50,000 in 2026, a five-fold jump in a single year. The European Union,
16:11for its part, has been moving to formalise its support for exactly this kind of production base.
16:16In mid-July 2026, the EU and Ukraine signed a drone deal intended to strip away bureaucratic barriers
16:23so that Ukrainian and European companies can more easily form joint ventures, and the European
16:28Commission launched a parallel EU-Ukraine drone alliance bringing together companies, researchers,
16:33and armed forces from both sides, with its first meeting of 18 founding members expected in Brussels
16:39in September. None of that money or policy framework built the Omega boat directly. That vessel came out of a
16:45diving unit, and a private Ukrainian IT company working on their own initiative. But it's the
16:50broader current the story is swimming in. A wartime economy that has learned to treat frontline
16:54improvisation as a legitimate source of new weapons, rather than something to be centralised and slowed
17:00down. So where does this actually leave Russia's position in the Black Sea by the summer of 2026?
17:06The core picture hasn't changed much since the fleet retreated to Novodzysk, but the pressure keeps
17:11compounding. Russia's Black Sea fleet has been forced to keep adapting its operations and has seen
17:16its opportunities for major Black Sea actions drastically cut down compared to earlier in the war.
17:21What's also changed is the shape of the threat facing Russian forces along that coastline. It used to be
17:27enough to keep large warships away from a handful of known drone launch points. Now Russian planners have to
17:32account for small boats that might be carrying an explosive payload, an FPV swarm, an interceptor drone,
17:39a ground robot, or some mix of all of the above, launched by anyone from navy crews to intelligence
17:44operators to a special operations diving unit working independently. That unpredictability is the actual
17:51strategic asset Ukraine has built here. A conventional navy is expensive, slow to expand and easy to track. A
17:58distributed ecosystem of small, cheap, purpose-built platforms designed by the people who actually use
18:04them is none of those things. And Omega's new mothership is one more data point in a trend that
18:09shows no sign of slowing down. But the actual goal of all of these tactics isn't even perhaps the Russian
18:15navy, but the occupied Crimea. And there, Ukraine is making bolder moves to the point where some analysts
