Farmers in Germany feel draught impact

German farmer Michael Pellmeyer began his harvest early this season after two months of almost no rainfall devastated grain crops in his region in Bavaria, leaving some maize plants without ears and contributing to what he described as among the worst grain yields on record. The deteriorating conditions underscore concerns flagged by agricultural analysts at commodity data firm Expana, which on Thursday sharply cut its forecast for the European Union's 2026/27 maize harvest. Expana lowered its estimate by 4.6 million metric tons from last month to 49.1 million tons, down 13.9% from the previous season and 19% below the five-year average, as heat and drought hit France, Germany, Benelux, central Europe and Poland. The worsening crop outlook comes as low water levels on the Rhine hamper inland shipping, raising logistics costs for industry and commodity traders. The water level at Kaub, a key shipping bottleneck, fell to 17 centimetres on Wednesday (August 5), the lowest on record, leaving some vessels able to carry only one-sixth of their usual cargo. Transport costs by tanker and inland vessel from Rotterdam to Karlsruhe have risen to around 150-160 euros per tonne, compared with 45 euros at the end of June, traders said.
