In this interview, the animation team behind Disney and Pixar's 'Elio' talks about the character design choice of giving Elio an eye patch. They discuss how it serves as a character identifier and fits his dreams of being a space captain pirate.
Transcript
00:00I don't know if this is a spoiler, but like Elio's little eye patch.
00:04Can you talk a little bit about that?
00:05Well, you didn't get to see how he got his eye patch, but he gets an eye patch.
00:13That's all we can say.
00:15Yeah, it was a bit of a challenge because we were like, does he have to spend the rest of
00:19the movie with his eye patch on?
00:20It does provide like a very useful way of knowing that's Elio.
00:25So it's really kind of like a handy, you know, identifier for him.
00:29And in the end, it wasn't causing too much trouble.
00:32It's one less eye for us to animate.
00:35Yeah.
00:35And for a film about a kid who has kind of dreams of being a space captain pirate or whatever,
00:43it's kind of really on theme.
00:46So we were surprised at how well it was woven into the movie by the end, I should say.
