00:39the food price from starting from banana to a box of matches they're quite extremely expensive
00:47especially outside so this is not the kind of life that we actually ask you as human beings
00:54supposed to be living kenisa trust a community kitchen in johannesburg says rising unemployment
01:00over the last six years has brought many more people through its doors there's no jobs for people
01:05most of these people stay on the court on the streets they don't have a place to sleep
01:11and some of them go hungry so we come they come to kenisa and we feed them the trust operates

01:19the wing of food forward sa a non-governmental organization that collects and redistributes
01:25food that would otherwise end up in landfill this is where south africa surplus food meets its hunger
01:31crisis recovering tons of edible food from the supply chain to feed hundreds of thousands in need every
01:38day kenisa as you've seen is one of our beneficiaries they come to this warehouse on a monthly basis
01:44uh to get their food uh donations so the the food varies it depends on the day you come because
01:52you
01:52see most of the food is donated stuff so it will depend on the day what expect for them but
01:58then they
01:58come here and get that food donation and then they go feed the people the squeeze on household budgets
02:05has been years in the making the cover 19 pandemic the russia ukraine war and conflict in the middle east
02:11have all driven up prices and energy costs at home climate related disasters and animal disease outbreaks
02:18including bird flu and foot and mouth disease have disrupted food production and pushed prices even higher
02:24for people to survive they've had to they've had to buy cheaper foods um they rely more on staple foods
02:32which are not
02:33necessarily the healthiest um and we also see coping strategies coming in like um where parents
02:40are saying to their children there's less to eat tonight um where they where they have to where parents are
02:46either not eating so that the children can eat or so that the breadwinner can eat while hunger levels are
02:54improving africa has now surpassed asia to become the world's hungriest continent for the first time at least two
03:01two-thirds of africans cannot afford a healthy diet with far-reaching consequences for the continent's
03:07health productivity and economic growth
