'Air Bud screening gives dogs front-row seats

Dozens of dogs traded the dog park for movie night on Monday (August 3), joining their owners in Los Angeles for a screening of the 1997 hit "Air Bud" ahead of the franchise's return to theaters next year. The event included a preview of "Air Bud Returns", which is scheduled for theatrical release in January 2027, followed by a screening of the original film about a golden retriever that becomes a basketball star. Guests were invited to bring their four-legged friends to the screening, with organizers providing blankets, water stations and other pet accommodations. The event also included photo opportunities with the new movie's star, Buddy. The new film follows a teenager who moves to Fernfield and forms a bond with a stray golden retriever named Buddy, reviving the franchise's fictional hometown ahead of a new basketball championship run. Air Bud, released in 1997, spawned multiple sequels and spinoffs and remains one of the better-known family film franchises centered on dogs. Air Bud Returns is set to open in U.S. theaters on Jan. 22, 2027.
