00:01:13event person becoming a main event person from there he went on and you know the legend of Stone Cold
00:01:27goes on from there and that's really I think that was his launching pad I don't know I've
00:01:30ever seen an athlete in my whole career as tough as Steve Austin that was absolutely amazing have
00:01:36you ever witnessed anything like that in your life did you expect anything less out of Stone Cold Steve
00:01:41Austin at WrestleMania I think at first when WrestleMania first started the the sport of
00:01:50pro wrestling as an entertainment forum was so considered the redheaded stepchild of the
00:01:54entertainment business and no one really took it seriously it was considered to be just for like
00:01:58trailer park people and and you know rednecks but I think the celebrities kind of brought a lot of
00:02:03mainstream publicity and brought kind of the overall media into realizing that wrestling was the premier
00:02:09form of entertainment there's such a huge crossover between world wrestling entertainment and other fields of
00:02:16entertainment music television movies people want to be a part of WrestleMania I mean I don't know that it's
00:02:22really a situation where we have to seek them out a lot of people I think seek WrestleMania out because
00:02:30they know it's a big event I think their presence meant a lot but I can guarantee you that their
00:02:34agent said
00:02:35to them hey WrestleMania slash how many millions of viewers it's good for you you know it's a good deal
00:02:42I
00:02:42mean I think a lot of people have tied themselves to wrestling because it's a very popular entity and it's
00:02:48a very popular
00:02:48business or sport whatever we are and I think they kind of helped break through the wall where it's like
00:02:53well gee if if Liberace is out there and if Pamela Anderson and you know Jenny McCarthy are out there
00:02:58or
00:02:59Muhammad Ali's involved maybe it's something I should check out and see what we'll see what it's all about I
00:03:04was
00:03:04probably like most of the wrestlers that didn't think it was right to have Liberace, Billy Martin, Muhammad Ali, the
00:03:12Rockettes, all that involved this was wrestling. Mr. T, he's a television guy.
00:03:18He's a bouncer from a bar in Chicago. He's got no cedar hairdo. He wears 50 pounds of fake jewelry.
00:03:24He's got gumball machines. And he's going to be in the main event with Hulk Hogan against Rowdy, Rowdy Pipe,
00:03:30and Orendorff.
00:03:31Never in my wildest imagination did I think a Cyndi Lauper or a Muhammad Ali, a Liberace would outshine the
00:03:38superstars that we had at that time.
00:03:40All that the celebrities did, they did exactly what they were meant to do.
00:03:44They brought in outside people and outside eyeballs to see the talent that the athletes had.
00:03:52Right now it is my very dear pleasure to introduce to you-
00:04:05My favorite celebrity at WrestleMania was Willie Nelson. I got to hang out with him the night before WrestleMania.
00:04:12He sang Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground, just right there. No music, no anything. And it was pretty
00:04:18cool.

00:04:59I do remember trying to get in Reva McIntyre's wrestling room.

00:05:16I have to admit, I enjoy the Pete Rose contributions with Kane.

00:05:22I was a big Pete Rose fan growing up, so it was really cool to meet him.
00:05:26It was cool to see him get Tombstone year after year after year.
00:05:30Lawrence Taylor, without a doubt, was a joy to be with and to be around,
00:05:37because, again, he was someone who respected our business
00:05:39and had a lot of fun doing what he did.
00:05:42I never will forget Pat Patterson training him, and Stanford.
00:05:45Pat coming to me one night and said, this guy's a horse.
00:05:48This guy's a great athlete, and he lived up to the billing.
00:05:53Get in there, D-B-O-C!
00:05:58I cannot believe it!
00:06:02Celebrities, I think it adds to the mystique and magnitude of WrestleMania.
00:06:06But still, it comes down to the performers at WrestleMania,
00:06:10that's the wrestlers, superstars.
00:06:14First WrestleMania suggestion was done in Stanford, Connecticut,
00:06:22and it was in a meeting with George Scott and Vince McMahon when the suggestion came up.
00:06:29I was totally in awe and shock of the suggestion.
00:06:36A year before, another promotion had tried something similar to WrestleMania
00:06:41and really didn't get it off the ground.
00:06:43But with Vince's power team behind him and the New York stroke behind him,
00:06:52I kind of figured that, hey, this man can pull something like this off.
00:06:57I didn't work here when WrestleMania was first created.
00:07:01When I first heard the idea of WrestleMania, I thought it was crazy.
00:07:06And I thought that it was the craziest idea that I'd ever heard.
00:07:12I felt it was horrible for the business.
00:07:16Didn't like any aspect of it.
00:07:18I did not like mixing actors with wrestlers.
00:07:22I felt that there were two different arenas that actors needed to stay out of our arena,
00:07:26and wrestlers needed to stay out of the acting arena.
00:07:28I didn't have any doubts about the principle, WrestleMania principle,
00:07:34how it was going to be done.
00:07:36Of course, you always have doubts.
00:07:37You know, Cold Circuit TV at that time was big in boxing.
00:07:41Nobody had ever tried it in anything else.
00:07:43And, you know, getting all the venues together and getting, you know, the production together.
00:07:49Those things kind of in the back of your mind, wow, is all this going to fall together at one
00:07:56time,
00:07:57one location, and then beam throughout the world?
00:08:02How can this happen like this?
00:08:04I hated the idea.
00:08:06But I paid to see it on closed circuit television for WrestleMania 1.
00:08:11Welcome to the greatest sports entertainment spectacular of all time.
00:08:17Welcome to WrestleMania!
00:08:20I remember I was at a closed circuit venue, promoting the venue in Miami, Florida.
00:08:26And I saw 15,000 people come into a venue to watch WrestleMania 1 on a TV screen.
00:08:33It amazed me.
00:08:35And from that moment on, it was just like a giant snowball coming down a mountainside.
00:08:41It just kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger to what we have now.
00:08:45Welcome, everyone.
00:08:46Gorilla Monsoon here at ringside with my colleague Jesse the Body Ventura
00:08:50as the World Wrestling Federation presents the wrestling extravaganza of all-time WrestleMania.
00:08:57As the weeks came, you could feel the energy all over the world, all over the country.
00:09:01People were talking about it.
00:09:03And this man was right.
00:09:05He produced something no one else had ever thought of.
00:09:08Oh, sure, there's a whole bunch of promoters that will say, hey, I had that idea.
00:09:12Well, then why didn't you do it?
00:09:13And why are you running in some high school barn someplace and people in Mississippi?
00:09:18I mean, he went right to the garden.
00:09:22Boy, when they came out, and Billy Martin and the Rockettes and Liberace and the dancing
00:09:27and the kicking and the introductions.
00:09:30And when Mr. T came out, I said to myself, this is the greatest thing I've ever seen.
00:09:36And I went up to Vince that night.
00:09:38I had a beer and I said, here's to WrestleMania 2.
00:09:40He said, what do you mean WrestleMania 2?
00:09:42Here's to WrestleMania 102.
00:09:45And that's how it started.
00:09:47Ladies and gentlemen, in just a few moments, we will have our main event.
00:09:59WrestleMania 1 was the best highlight for me to knowing that you're among great people in the world.
00:10:07To have, you know, Mr. T there, and of course, Muhammad Ali was there.
00:10:14And then you got, you know, the rest of us that was all out there, you know, and Hulk Hogan,
00:10:21and Piper, and myself, and Cowboy.
00:10:25And WrestleMania, brother, was the greatest highlight for me knowing that I was involved in it with all these guys
00:10:33there.
00:10:34That feeling will never ever probably be duplicated again.
00:10:40Because that's, that's one, one day that that started it all.
00:10:51He got out!
00:10:52He got out!
00:11:01Unbelievable!
00:11:03What an ending to WrestleMania.
00:11:06The most phenomenal wrestling card ever put together in the history of professional wrestling.
00:11:12Happening has happened, folks.
00:11:14The greatest wrestling extravaganza of the century.
00:11:19WrestleMania.
00:11:22I remember the first time hearing that WrestleMania 3 was going to take place at Pontiac Silverdome,
00:11:27and I thought that Vince McMahon had lost his mind.
00:11:31We're going to hold it where?
00:11:32And we're going to have how many people?
00:11:34You've got to be kidding me.
00:11:36And wow.
00:11:38And just coming up to the Pontiac Silverdome, people had been camped out there for two or three days at
00:11:44a time.
00:11:45And I've been to a couple of Super Bowls.
00:11:48And believe me, I've never seen anything like that in my life.
00:11:50Welcome to WrestleMania 3!
00:11:55We'd had WrestleManias, but this one took it to another level.
00:12:00The significance of Hulk versus Andre, that was Ali versus Frazier.
00:12:06That was the match.
00:12:09They were two larger-than-life characters.
00:12:13It represented the first ever real mega event.
00:12:16And it represented what the caliber of a WrestleMania main event is supposed to be.
00:12:20You had Hulk Hogan versus Andre the Giant, and it was the two biggest forces that there was at the
00:12:25time in sports entertainment.
00:12:26And it's like you can't see either one of them, you know, losing.
00:12:30I think it was a lot of curiosity.
00:12:32Can Hulk Hogan slam this 500-pound monster?
00:12:36Can Hulk Hogan even move this 500-pound monster?
00:12:40And I think the mainstream press caught on to this so, so big time.
00:12:47Here's this blonde-headed sun god that's just built like who knows what.
00:12:53And at that time, there weren't a lot of guys like Hulk Hogan in the business.
00:12:57And there definitely wasn't a lot of guys like Andre the Giant.
00:13:01And for these two colossal men to meet in the center of the ring, in the same match, in the
00:13:07same building, once again, it was Goosebumps City.
00:13:11This is the main event of the evening.
00:13:15It is for the World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Championship.
00:13:21I went through my mind coming out on those carts from 93,000 people.
00:13:26It never hit me there are 93,000 people here.
00:13:31You know what it hit me?
00:13:32There are billions at home watching.
00:13:35That's what really got me.
00:13:37Because I've been to a whole lot of arenas before.
00:13:39Never anything close to 93,000.
00:13:42Never anything close to probably 40,000.
00:13:44But, my God, this was...
00:13:46I was thinking of the television audience.
00:13:49What is happening here today?
00:13:51I'm in the main event.
00:13:52I'm part of history.
00:13:55Wow.
00:13:55It was something.
00:13:57The roof of the Superdome about to explode here.
00:14:01And Hulkamania, look at it just, it's alive and running well.
00:14:06You got 93,173 fans standing on their feet for this one, Gorilla.
00:14:12Took two, and I think probably at that time, the two biggest stars in the industry.
00:14:17Because Andre was worldwide at that time, world known, as was Hulk.
00:14:23And Hulkamania was on fire.
00:14:24And I think that they're beyond a shot without the two biggest personalities in our sport.
00:14:29It's just a huge promotion built around two huge stars.
00:14:33Look at the stare of the champion against the challenger.
00:14:38The irresistible force meeting the immovable object.
00:14:41A moment in that match was when Hulk Hogan first went to slam Andre,
00:14:46and Andre fell on top of Hogan for the one, two, and a half, and three quarters,
00:14:50that you just knew right then and there that Andre had just become champion.
00:14:54Oh!

00:14:54He come out!
00:14:55One, two!

00:14:59Was that two or was that three?

00:15:02And it was just such a huge, like, how can Hulk beat Andre the Giant?
00:15:05You know, you kind of knew that he was going to win, but you didn't really know for sure.
00:15:08He's a tremendous champion, but he's facing a man who has never been beaten in 15 years.
00:15:15Hulk fighting with every ounce of courage in him.
00:15:17And the champion unloading with everything he's got.
00:15:21Oh!
00:15:22He broke it!
00:15:22He dropped the big eye!
00:15:24That's the first time I think that the Giant's ever been knocked off his feet like that.
00:15:28Look at the look on the face of the champion!
00:15:31He's hooking up, Jess!
00:15:32I don't know if he's got enough left in him!
00:15:35That adrenaline can do wonders!

00:15:39He's landed!
00:15:41He's got it!

00:15:53At WrestleMania III, Hulk Hogan and Hulkamania,
00:15:57that was the stamp.
00:15:59That was the day that Hulkamania became immortal in my eyes.
00:16:04I've never thought it could be done, Dorella!
00:16:07Neither did he's 93,000 plus!
00:16:11I've always believed that the business was much bigger than people ever gave it credit for.
00:16:15And it was a very, very proud day for anyone associated with the business,
00:16:20in any way, shape, or form, whether you worked here or not.
00:16:23You had to be proud of that day for the business.
00:16:26If you got a competitive bone in your body and you didn't get goosebumps,
00:16:29you had no blood in you, because it was just bone chilling.
00:16:33I think that made WrestleMania, from that point on, have to be just,
00:16:39not just bigger than the other pay-per-views, but just a lot bigger.
00:16:44I don't know any way to describe it.
00:16:55We're all mortals.
00:16:58Our bodies, though strong, can't defy time.
00:17:04One day, we will die.
00:17:08What matters most is the legacy we leave behind.
00:17:13Did we become all that we are capable of becoming?
00:17:18Did we make the difference we came here to make?
00:17:22Did we pursue our dreams when all around us thought we were chasing illusions?
00:17:30Only those who dare to rise are able to lift themselves above horizons.
00:17:37Only those bold enough to chase dreams are the ones who catch them.
00:17:45WrestleMania, the showcase of the immortals, live March 30th on pay-per-view.
00:17:53Wow, you mentioned three guys, The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Hulk Hogan.
00:18:00You define WrestleMania by those guys.
00:18:04But there's one guy that lurks in the background all the time at WWE, and that's The Undertaker.
00:18:13Undertaker, I believe, is the only WWE superstar that has an undefeated record at WrestleMania.
00:18:22And Undertaker's always had a prominent role in WrestleMania's.
00:18:25So the fact that at WrestleMania he has been so dominant, I think without a doubt,
00:18:32makes Undertaker one of the special superstars that you have to put in that same class.
00:18:41Undertaker causing a lot of sleepless nights for a whole lot of folks here in the World Wrestling Federation.
00:18:47WrestleMania 7 wrestling, you know, The Undertaker was such a big man, you know, and impressive looking guy.
00:18:56You know, he was meant to be in the wrestling circle.
00:19:00Services for Mr. Snooker.
00:19:05How on earth are you gonna stop this guy?
00:19:10The fact that, A, he's been in 10 WrestleManias, which probably has to be some kind of a record.
00:19:15I don't know if anybody else has been in that many.
00:19:16And B, the fact he's never lost.
00:19:18I mean, that pretty much shows he's one of the most dominant and popular and most intriguing superstars in the
00:19:25history of this company.
00:19:29It's been a long, hard road to get this opportunity to be the champion.
00:19:34He did it!
00:19:41He's been just a huge, huge player.
00:19:43And his win record there is phenomenal.
00:19:46I mean, you know, he's been a huge part of the success of this company.
00:19:50And I guess that's just due to the fact that the character has been so strong and so impressive and
00:19:55so awesome all these years.
00:20:02It's hard to go 10-0 on any kind of event.
00:20:04Considering you're going 10-0 at WrestleMania, the showcase of the Immortals, you know, every year the biggest event, it's
00:20:11impressive.
00:20:11And it just goes to show you how big of a Star Trekker is and how much influence and how
00:20:16much importance he has with the WWE.
00:20:20I'm very fortunate to be undefeated at WrestleMania, but to be undefeated is not the most important thing.
00:20:27Because as soon as you start making that the focus, you're going to get off your game, and sure enough,
00:20:32you'll get beat.
00:20:32So, let's just go out there and work hard and perform for the people and give them the best that
00:20:39I got.
00:20:39That's what's important.
00:20:48I was all the time stuck and Vince was going to fail.
00:20:52But I looked at the curtain that night, and I saw Dick Clark, Cindy Lauper.
00:20:57I said, this thing is going to work. Vince knows what he's doing.
00:21:01They have so much history together.
00:21:03People used to ask, would Hulk have been Hulk without McMahon?
00:21:06Would McMahon have been McMahon without Hulk?
00:21:08I don't really know.
00:21:10Hogan is driven by money and fame.
00:21:14So is Vince.
00:21:16And they're going to butt heads.
00:21:17With Vince McMahon's mind and Hogan's mind at WrestleMania, anything could happen.
00:21:24It's going to be great.
00:21:29We've been living this Hulkamania thing one day at a time.
00:21:32Now that we've got so many believers, so many new generations to follow, it's going to live forever.
00:21:37I think that Hulk is synonymous with WrestleMania.
00:21:39I mean, I'd be remiss if I had told it any other way.
00:21:42Hulk and WrestleMania are sort of hand in glove.
00:21:46You know, you can't really have one without the other.
00:21:50WrestleMania II, Hulkamania running wild around the world.
00:21:54Hulk's demeanor and Hulk's way to explain himself and express himself was right there at what this country and what
00:22:04the world needed at that time.
00:22:06And I think it was a breath of fresh air.
00:22:08And I think Hulk Hogan was the right selection to carry the banner.
00:22:15It's mayhem here in the city of angels.
00:22:19I've never heard an ovation like this for anything in my life.
00:22:24Hulkster looking to be in the best condition of his entire life.
00:22:28Our national hero, the nation, looking to him.
00:22:32He's the greatest, isn't he? Nobody likes him.
00:22:35He has more or less been the one who has set the standard for what a main event of WrestleMania
00:22:40is supposed to be.
00:22:40You look at the first seven, eight WrestleManias, and they were mainly built around Hulk Hogan.
00:22:45And when an event like WrestleMania is built around someone like you, you know, which is a Hulk Hogan,
00:22:50then that definitely means you're special and you're the pioneering force of that event.
00:22:54He is the immortal Hulk Hogan.
00:22:55And he has got him pumped up here.
00:22:58These fans sing yellow and red.
00:23:00Indeed, I've never, ever experienced anything in my life as we are experiencing right here.
00:23:10Hulk Hogan has been the flagship guy, you know, for WrestleMania for a long time.
00:23:16I think Hulk will always be, you know, part of the atmosphere.
00:23:19He'll be recognized.
00:23:21And if you think of a WrestleMania, you'll think about Hulk Hogan, Hulkamania.
00:23:24I mean, he was that big a player.
00:23:26You can never take that away from him.
00:23:27I mean, to this day, the arenas are just, they blow the doors off.
00:23:31Because the guy was a huge, and still is a huge, huge star.
00:23:34And come on.

00:23:39This crowd's showing respect to Hogan.
00:23:45The Hulkster has just taken one giant step towards immortality.
00:23:52I do believe Hulkamania will live forever.
00:23:55It absolutely will.
00:24:04Vince McMahon took professional wrestling from the dark ages into a modern era and now a new millennium.
00:24:11Vince McMahon, he makes things work.
00:24:14Hulk Hogan has put wrestling on the map like up to that point in time it had never been.
00:24:20Vince McMahon.
00:24:21Vince McMahon certainly is a pretty good physical specimen.
00:24:24He does not have the wrestling credentials that Hulk Hogan has.
00:24:27Nor do I think he has the support of the fans that a star like Hulk Hogan has.
00:24:33So if I were to give anybody the upper hand, I would say that Hogan has got to be a
00:24:38slight favorite in this confrontation at WrestleMania 19.
00:24:55WrestleMania means to meet the biggest show of the year.
00:24:58I mean all year round you're working for one goal and that's to get to WrestleMania and have the biggest
00:25:02match you can possibly have on that show at the biggest stage in our business.
00:25:09Welcome to the greatest sports entertainment spectacular of all time.
00:25:14Welcome to WrestleMania.
00:25:17The very first WrestleMania I saw was WrestleMania 1.
00:25:20It was before pay-per-view.
00:25:21It was on closed circuit TV and I couldn't get a ticket to go.
00:25:25There wasn't anywhere close to where I was living.
00:25:26So what I did was I put a hold on it at the video store.
00:25:29So the day that it came out on video, I rented it.
00:25:31I had a little party at my house.
00:25:33I had all my friends in the basement.
00:25:34We sat around and watched WrestleMania.
00:25:36Then after that we had a battle royal in the living room.
00:25:38So that's what we did.
00:25:42My favorite WrestleMania moment I'd say probably when Edge and I won the tag team titles for the first time.
00:25:46Because it was the first time we had to wrestle at WrestleMania and to be able to win the tag
00:25:51team titles in a triple threat ladder match.
00:25:54Edge and Christian, Edge and Christian have won it.
00:25:57It was awesome.
00:25:58That's probably my favorite moment.
00:26:14WrestleMania is what you work hard for all year long.
00:26:17It's where you carve your name in this company.
00:26:20If you don't do it at WrestleMania, it doesn't get done.
00:26:24Anyone that's ever made it, The Undertaker, Rock, Stone Cold, Hulk Hogan, all had important moments at WrestleMania.
00:26:38First WrestleMania I saw was Hogan versus Andre.
00:26:43The irresistible force meeting the invisible object.
00:26:46Of course, me being the bigger kid, I was a giant fan.
00:26:49I was a fan of Andre.
00:26:51Little I know how the progression of time and where it would lead me.
00:26:58Standing in the ring at my first main event at WrestleMania,
00:27:01just the adrenaline, the excitement at the beginning of that match for me,
00:27:05knowing it's the main event at WrestleMania.
00:27:07It was like nothing I can describe.
00:27:11That moment I'll never forget.
00:27:24Going an hour was at WrestleMania main event.
00:27:27It was a little nerve-wracking in and of itself.
00:27:29And then to do this entrance was just on top of that.
00:27:35So it was a little distracting, to say the least.
00:27:39But once I got up there, I guess the idea that I had to wrestle an hour
00:27:45took my mind off of the fact that I was standing who knows how high.
00:27:50And I did it once that day.
00:27:52And of course, Vince came to me and said, I've done it.
00:27:56And that's what I love about him.
00:27:58He's never asked me to do anything that he himself would not do or endure.
00:28:02And he wrote it and then I did it.
00:28:05And they asked if I wanted to do it again.
00:28:06I said, no, one's enough.
00:28:09It happened fairly quickly and it was, you know, enjoyable.
00:28:13There's only one!

00:30:49My first WrestleMania, I didn't get to see the first one because I didn't have access to
00:30:53cable television or anything, was WrestleMania 2.
00:30:56And it was Hulk Hogan versus King Kong Bundy.
00:30:59It was Andre the Giant in the Battle Royal match.
00:31:02Roddy Piper versus Mr. T.
00:31:04It's not my idea to be talking right before a big fight.

00:31:10It was everything that I had hoped it would be.

00:31:15And it was a wrestling fan's dream come true.
00:31:18And when it was over, you said, I can't wait for WrestleMania 2 or 3 or 4, whatever.
00:31:24You're just looking forward to the next one.
00:31:36It's a great honor to be involved with WrestleMania.
00:31:38It's something that every wrestler looks forward to.
00:31:42It's a chance to be able to go out there and say, I am one of the best at what

00:31:50I remember my first WrestleMania, obviously, growing up as a kid,
00:31:53watching Hulk Hogan, Mr. T, Piper, Orndorff in the main event,
00:31:58and all the other great matches that went on that night.
